News and reviews; quite possibly the most self explanatory thread ever, but this is a place, were you can share a news article you found interesting, or an event of some importence to you (like remembrance day), Or just tabloid gossip (if you must). Also DVDs, Cd's, Movie release dates, and TV show start dates go here. It is also a place were you can post your reviews of movies you watched (particularly new ones - good or bad), Cd's that just came out, Concert's you just saw ETC.
Sticky-ing for now, it may change later, but great idea mj.

Thank's
Pride and Prejudice;
I am not generally a chick flick girl, and definitely not a period piece chick flick girl, but this is truly excellent. The scenery is beautiful, Mr. Darcy is perfectly cast, and surprisingly so is Kira Knightly as Elizabeth Bennett. The story line is great, the dialogue elegant, and for some inexplicable reason your heart is racing, after the credit's roll, as if you had just watched an action movie.

mystjade, here's a link to something that might help you with that whole "spellcheck" thing.
ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com/)
It is an IE (Internet Explorer) add-on that's designed for things just like this (message boards, etc.)
I don't use IE anymore so I haven't been able to use it myself. Just a thought.

I'm looking forward to Harry Potter and Narnia. I'm really hoping that I won't be disappointed by them. GOF better not be messed up like POA. My favorite in the series - and they screwed it up. The Narnia series were my favorite books as a kid. I'm hoping that it is good. The scenery looks incredible.

It was mine as well. The Magician's Nephew is and alway's has been my favorite book, and I doubt that they will ever make that, into a movie, because it does not fit into the Narnia myth-arc in till The Last Battle.
My favorite charichter's are Lucy, and Peter and Aslan. From what I have seen so far, they did not cast Lucy properly but I hope I will be proven incorrect. Mary have you seen the new longer trailer? It is splendid, much better then the first.

ooo thanks Cait!
I got Susan, which made me happy as she's my favorite character in the books.
The movies you listed that I'm really looking forward to are GOF(duh, sig), Narnia(duh), and Geisha. I read the book in 11th grade and loved it. From the previews I've seen, the movie looks VERY promising. Also I'm a fan of Zhang Ziyi, and this is her first English speaking role, no dubs.

OK, I'm so looking forward to this one. How did I miss this last night? Hot chicks in black leather? :faintthud
I hope it lives up to it's origins! (ETA - Yeah, OK, I know there's only so much that can be CGI'd etc but it's the story lines I was referencing! :) )

I've seen all of the trailers.....and I'm hooked. I'm really looking forward to it more than GOF. (I can only see GOF being screwed up like POA....already from the trailers)
I'm Prince Caspian....probably my least favorite character. My favorite character is Lucy...innocence and the ability to know the right path, even from one so young. I also like the way that the white witch is written. She isn't a good person...but such a deep character.

Leuthen,
I am looking forward to Aeon Flux as well. I enjoyed it on Liquid Television, and it does look intriguing. Also, Danica is sooooo hot. Everytime I see those eyes, I get all flustered and blush. Any driver that hot, gee-man-ninny crickets.

Yeah, she's pretty hot that's for sure juan. That's why I've broken my almost year old policy of having an av related to LOST while it's airing. I just can't let those eyes go. You mean she drives cars as well? That just takes her to an all new level of hot doesn't it? ;) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/Leuthen2/Danica2.jpg)

She's the only reason I even follow the IRL any more. Yes, that's the male piggish side in me coming out. I think she's a very talented driver and I was so pulling for her during the Indy 500! They played a trailer for Geisha the other night during Medium...it looks absolutely amazing! I cant wait for it.
About GOF, it is my favorite book out of the series, but from the previews I've seen I'm not really that worried, they looked amazing. I try and separate the books from the movies most times. That said, I might flip out about the amount they have cut out. Every part of that book is gold, and I couldn't imagine taking anything out... So yeah I'm hopeful about it still, but I might find myself pissed off all the same. I guess I'll let you all know how that turns out after this weekend.

I watched the Devil's Rejects last night. This is Rob Zombie's sequel to House of 1000 Corpses. It takes place where the first one leaves off. Although they are very different, House is more of a campy horror movie and Devil's is more of a violent (very violent) crime suspense drama. If you have a weak stomach, this is not a movie you should watch. You get a better understanding of the characters in this one and at the end I started rooting for the bad guys. The 70's southern rock soundtrack and cinematography in this movie really helps you get into this flick. I'm just disappointed this movie didn't do good at the box office because I think Rob Zombie can only get better at directing.

Nic: GOF is also my favorite book so far. I wish I could separate, the book's from the movie, but really if a movie doesn't do a book justice, I get mad. Except if the movie differs enough from the book for me to deal with them as if they are completely diff rent, things entirely
MJB; I love Wicked, the musical (although the ending is fairly weak and some of the song's sub par), and the book. When you do read it, please review it. I would love to hear your opinion. Although now I know of it existence, I may not be able to wait that long (If only the wizard was around to give me Patience). I love the Oz book's, particularly Ozma of Oz, much more then Wizard of OZ the movie. Although the movie version of Ozma was pretty good.
Gambit: Munich Opens in wide release on January 6, 2006 ( I really want to see this), and the other movie you mentioned is called The Good German, and it is still in production, no release date yet. However it is about An Amer can journalist in post-war Berlin is lured into a murder mystery while trying to find his former mistress Cate Blanchette and Toby Mcguire also star.

Thanks Rosalind. Leuthen, I am glad you re-posted the comic.
I actually have A CD review, this time. I don't generally listen to music that could be considered Pop in any sense of the word, but I just discovered Jack Johnson. I will admit that it took me a while to fully appreciate, his music. I had heard, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing countless times, but always while in the gym, when the song was to slow, for my inner momentum. But then I heard it in a different context, and I must now admit to be a convert.
On his self titled debut, I love Bubble Toes (weird tittle I know), Mudfootbal, and F-step Blues.
The Newest album in between dream's has the beautiful, Banana Pancakes, Good People, Breakdown, Do You Remember, and Constellations.
The best thing about Jack Johnson is that his music creates it's own space, and time, leaving room to breath and relax. Also the lyrics are genuinely good.

Thanks Scotty Boy, I am actually a Cash fan, so I know that I have to see the movie I just don't know when. I just saw Syrniana, although my viewing was disturbed, by someone snoring in the seat behind me, I have come to the conclusion that it is a fairly boring movie. Not just because of the snoring man, but because it was one of those educational message film's that relied too much on the message (which was one I already knew of and agreed with). It was not boring to be because it was a political drama because generally I like those: All The Presidents men, had me glued to the seat.
That said it did have some very powerful moment's, and some beautiful speeches. It was filmed in a traffic-esque style, and if felt very real (partially because it moved so slow). I must say Matt Demon, did an excellent Job in his role, and Jeffery Wright, Kayvan Novak, were also remarkble.

I just watched "The Motorcycle Diaries" I highly recommend this movie. It is in subtitles but I'm sure if that bothers you, you can probably find a dubbed version. This movie follows two young men on a motorcycle trip through South America. From Argentina to the tip of Venezuela. And shows the two men growing socially, bacoming aware of the class seperation in South America in the 50's. This movie made me want to start a revolution, it made me want to just pack up and take off on the road some where just anywhere. I wanted to go and make love to beautiful women in all the parts of the world. It is such an inspiring movie. It also has a great little twist, at the end you realize you've been watching the story of a fairly famous person.

I just watched "Alexander" by Oliver Stone. I was mostly dissapointed. I expected a little more from Oliver Stone. I thought the last fight scene in India was a little more his style. With the painted colors in the background. I really like his personal style and wished there would have been more of a personal hand in it for O.S. I am also not a big fan of Angelina Jolie. Nothing personal, I just don't like her acting style.

Sage Elf, Thanks for your reviews. I really want to see motorcycle diaries, Alexander not so much. He is one of my favorite historical figures, and I don't want to see his life wrongly portrayed by Colin Ferrel.
I just saw Rent, and I must say I really loved it. Now I have never seen the musical, but I own the soundtrack, and have for year's. Some of the song's IE Le ve Bohemia, and Candle, I really liked, but they never made sense to me, because I didn't know the story line. It was great to put them in context. The movie's bargaining is a little bumpy, they sing even when it would be better to have dialogue in a couple of places, and some of the relationship's lacked chemistry. Also the story rap's up a little to ideologically. However, the song's are great, most of the acting is terrific Roserio Dawson is perfect, Anthony Rapp is better, and Jesse L. Martin (from Law and Order) can sing, but doesn't seem to comfortable acting in his role.
The song's are slightly different, in the soundtrack and the movie so I gathered that Anthony Rapp - Mark (my favorite character), had a bigger part in the musical. In deed they did not spend enough time on him in the movie, choosing to focus on the 'couples' instead.
Bottom Line, there is a spirit, energy, and creativity, in this show that should not be missed.

The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
First off I must give a disclaimer, I love the book's, in fact I love all of C.S. Lewis's books - If you haven't read the rest definitely look into them. However the lion The witch and the Wardrobe, is no were near my favorite in the series. So that should make me a little more impartial. Now that we have got that bit of legality out of the war
CoN was a terrific movie, the script was tight without feeling like it had left too much of the original story behind (Unlike GoF). The acting was great, I originally (because of the previews) had fear's regarding the girl they cast as Lucy, but those were all appeased the minute she walked on screen. She was perfect, curios, kind, and brave in spite of everything. I could not imagine a better Lucy. The same goes for Edmund, he is delightfully hate-able, then completely forgivable. Mr Tummnis (sp?) was perfect, in fact aside from Lucy he was by far the best character/actor match up in the movie. Tilda Swinton, did a good job as the Wicked witch, aside from a few occasion's were she was clearly enjoying herself by hamming it up. She was much better in Constantine (a far worse movie). I was disappointed in Peter. He just did not look or act the part, he needed more of a backbone, and a slightly more jaded air about him. Susan too was a little too self consensus, but only in a few places. Aslan (-voiced by Liam Nessen), was terrific, and the beaver's were also perfect, not too cutesy at all. The Professor was perfect, and if you have read the Magicians nephew you would no why that is so important.
As for the plot it remains true to the original (expat no substitutes). I thought the use of World War Two, was great and highly appropriate. Even if the bargaining is different it work's much better that way. I actually love the new beginning and Edmund's attempt to "save' there father.
I loved so many scenes, although to be the beginning feels stronger then the end, perhaps that's only since I know the end so well. Although the very end was handled perfectly, the older version's of the four children, matched up well. I have to say the battle sense did not impress me as much as the one's in the Lord of the Ring's. This was only because of relative lack of gore. They were still very well done, and as a whole I thought that it was much better then both Gof and LotR's.
Thanks for the review mystjade! I plan to go see the movie next Friday. Now I really can't wait! :)

The Chronicles Of Narnia
OK, so true to my word, I went and saw this last night with my wife and daughter. I don't honestly remember how much of this story I read growing up so if my review is a little hazy, you now understand why.
First of all, C.S. Lewis and books aside, y'all need to see this movie. Yes you can follow it even if you've never read a word from the books.
This is possibly the best movie I've seen this year, in several years for that matter. Those of you who know me, know I'm not exactly theater person but I am so glad I saw Narnia on the big screen.
I'm going to steal some quotes from mystjade here since she and I think alike on this.
The acting was great, I originally (because of the previews) had fear's regarding the girl they cast as Lucy, but those were all appeased the minute she walked on screen.
Absolutely. At first I was apprehensive about Lucy but, damn, did she pull through as the movie progressed. Wow.
The same goes for Edmund, he is delightfully hate-able, then completely forgivable.
Again, I completely agree. I so disliked Edmund at the beginning but by the end of the movie, if you aren't completely in love with him, there's something wrong with you. :)
Tilda Swinton, did a good job as the Wicked witch, aside from a few occasion's were she was clearly enjoying herself by hamming it up.
Oh, man does she do a great job or what? In her own way, she kinda steals the show from time to time. Yeah, she does ham it up from time to time but unless you're looking for it, you may not notice it. Awesome job on Tilda's part!
I was disappointed in Peter.
I agree and disagree with mystjade here. I think that Peter was done rather well. Yeah, he does have his "Are you kidding me?" moments but overall, I liked Peter. Personally, I really enjoyed watching him progress as the movie and story line went along. He starts out as kind of a hard-ass but he does eventually come around. For those who have seen it, that scene between Peter and Edmund, at Aslan's tent, I thought that scene could have been done better. "Get some rest" just didn't quite do it for me.
Aslan (-voiced by Liam Nessen), was terrific, and the beaver's were also perfect, not too cutesy at all.
I couldn't agree more. I so loved Aslan and the way he's portrayed. The beaver's were hilarious and perfect as mystjade says. Not cutesy at all, just right IMHO.
The Professor was perfect, and if you have read the Magicians nephew you would no why that is so important.
I haven't read the Magician's Nephew but I absolutely agree that the Professor was perfect! If I recall correctly, he has the last line in the movie and it's perfectly done! It even made me smile. Great job there!
I have to say the battle sense did not impress me as much as the one's in the Lord of the Ring's. This was only because of relative lack of gore. They were still very well done, and as a whole I thought that it was much better then both Gof and LotR's.
Yeah, when you compare the battle scene's to LoTR, it's a bit lacking, but OMG how cool were the (and mystjade will know the correct terminology) phoenix's that created the line of fire? Very nice scene. I was kind of glad for the lack of gore considering I was watching this movie with a 6 year old.
Overall rating.......I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Even if you've never read anything by C.S. Lewis, you'll enjoy this movie! If you're gonna go see a movie with the family this holiday season, I recommend Narnia. Really. Overall it's very well done, the CGI is great, the story is great and just when you think it's about to get boring, you're blown away.
For those who have seen it, did any of y'all think that next to final scene, the crowning scene, looked a little Star Wars-ish? You'd have to have seen both movies to know what I'm talking about. It was kinda funny because that was the first thing that entered my mind while watching.
OK, if you haven't already, go see it! You'll enjoy it.
Oh, man. Liam Neeson does Aslan's voice?
After seeing Kinsey recently, I don't know know hackable that's gonna be. lol

Oh, Leuthen I thought the exact same thing. Regarding the final crowning scene. Star war's redux - but with prettier award's and this time they didn't forget Chewie.
And the great thing about Narnia, is it actully get's better on second viewing, - there is more time to take everthing in.
Oh and for anyone who hasn't read magician's nephew, and doesn't have the time. The significanse of the professer is that as a kid, he and his friend polly were forced into narnia - by his uncle and the which Jadis who came from a dieing world. They get there by magic ring's and a forest between the world. They (and a cabbie, his wife and there horse,) see Aslan sing Narnia into being. Jadis throw's part of a lamp post at aslan, which fall's into the furtle earth and grew into a whole lamp post (because there is so much residule life magic). The Proffeser (then none as diggory), is sent by aslan to get a fruit from a tree on the other end of Narnia for his mother (who is dieing). Jadis tries to tempt Diggory into eating it himself, as Jadis herself did. He refuses, and when they return to earth, diggory's mother get's better, and he plant's the seed of the truth. Which grows into an apple tree. one day when diggory is old the tree fall's, and diggory has it made into a wardrobe - or rather the wardrobe. Diggory and Polly both return to Narnia in the Last battle.

Second Sight
Second Sight, is not the first British TV show I have watched, and it is defiantly not the first one I have liked (Black Adder, Trading spaces - not the American one, the original, Swallows and the Amazon, the list goes on. . .). However it is a brilliant, and thoroughly enjoyable TV movie Series. Staring Non other then Clive Owen who is superb, as a detective loosing his site, yet refusing to quite his job, or even tell his co worker's about his disease. Instead he goes through life with the help of the few who find out, the first being the intriguing D.I. Tully who also becomes his lover. Along with the lose of eye sight, Clive's character is also starting to get vision's/hallucination's as part of the disease, The actor who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series had a Major role in the second one, entitled Hide & Seek. I have only seen the first two so far, as I have had issue's finding the rest (there are five in all). They are great mystery stories without having to rely on the bang and flash, of American shows. They are the best mystery shows I have seen in a long time.

This was on EW this afternoon...
'Lost' cast named entertainer of the year
December 22, 2005 15:46:04
(Reuters) - The cast of "Lost," ABC's hit drama of air crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island, have won one battle -- they beat a 40-year-old virgin and King Kong's girlfriend for the title of 'Entertainer of the Year."
Entertainment Weekly named what it called a group of "treasured islanders," the cast of "Lost," as its Entertainer of the Year, calling the show one of the "biggest cult breakouts since The X-Files."
In second place was Steve Carell, the star of the hit film "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and the magazine cited him for his ability to play an implausible boob.
"You're telling me I have a gift for the pathetic. I have no idea where my pathetic nature comes from. If I thought about it too long, it would depress me," Carell told the magazine.
Third was Naomi Watts, who plays the blond actress befriended by Kong in the new film reviving the classic tale of ape meets girl, ape loves girl, ape loses girl.
Kayne West, the producer-turned-rapper, was fourth and actress Felicity Huffman was fifth, praised both for her performance in "Desperate Housewives" and as a man on the verge of completing a sex-change operation in "TransAmerica."
Actor/director George Clooney placed sixth on the list with Entertainment Weekly saying that his direction of the McCarthy-era drama "Good Night, and Good Luck" helped transform him into "a man of both passion and principle."
"The one thing you get to do when you're famous is shine a light on something. But if you want to shine a light on something that isn't so palatable, you should expect to catch ... (criticism) for it and take it," Clooney told the magazine.
Completing the top 10 were in order: actor Vince Vaughn, pop star Gwen Stefani, children's book hero Harry Potter and rising Hollywood star Terrence Howard, who the magazine said "stunned audiences with Oscar-caliber performances in not one but two of the year's best independent films, "Crash" and "Hustle and Flow."

New Reviews: As always I will keep my reviews as spoiler free as possible
Memoir's of A Geisha
I loved the book, but I would not recommend the movie, to anyone. Well it had some breath taking beautiful scenes, and some interesting element's involving, the main character's childhood, and the wars effect on japan. The main character's primary purpose in life, is sad and a huge step back for female equality (never mind feminism), when put into perspective, which the movie does and the book did not. Also many of the character's are reduced to one dimensional figure's and characters appear and reappear, because the script for it not out of any larger plot or character development.
Also the movie, is long, and the time passes slowly. Besides the movie is entirely too unrealistic. For one the three primary geisha's are played by Chinese actresses. Also many if not all of the tradition's are / misinterpreted. In Japan they are advertising the movie, as showing the west's cheesy interpretation/misconception of the east, Japan, and Geisha's.
King Kong
I would love to give this film an unabashedly good review, because there are so many great thing's about it. The casting, and the acting is spot on. Even those in lesser roles like the captain, are perfect. There are great action scenes, and beautiful small intimate, romantic scenes. there are scary scenes, and even one or two funny ones. Also the whole film glow's with beauty, from new York's fuzzy light's to the last climb
However the movie is simply too long, Most of the is added by several unnecessary action scenes on skull Island, which actually serve to diminish the power of the really great action sequences that exist there - The dinosaur scenes are amazing. The first native is so powerfully scary, but when they all get together they seem to morph into golum like figures, and there scenes go on for far too long, and are far to overblown, actually negating the Erie impact the first few natives made. Also there are a few melodramatic scenes I could do without. Still it is a Good movie, better then most (not that that's saying much), a good watch, and more then worth the price of admission.
O.k. that's all I have any me for right now. Any suggestion's for what i should review next? I have recently seen Miami Vice (season two), Veronica Mar's (season one), Party of 5 (season One and Two) Serenity (the DVD Extra's are amazing), Into the blue, Fun with Dick and Jane, The Good the Bad and the Ugly (director's Cut) . . .

I just watched War of the Worlds and coming into it I had no idea what to expect and after watching it I still don't have much of an opinion either way.
Good - I like the action a lot, it was very well done and from a directing stand point, the way the movie follows the Cruise character around works well to play on the isolation/individual survival theme of a Doomsday scenario.
Bad - The plot and the aliens, though very well designed seemed very flawed for an 'advanced species,' along with the Tripods buried underground in NYC seemed completely impossible. Of course the story was written many decades ago, so I will give it some leeway.
Final conclusion - I would recommend the movie for its action and story of 'individual survival' in a time of destruction. The action scenes were the best I've ever scene.

Il liked it. THough as you said the plot is flawed as it was written a long time ago. Tom Cruise was good in it and the whole film was done well as they didnt go too far from the book.

Another movie that was very average was Cinderella Man. I think that if it didn't come so soon after Million Dollar Baby it would have been done better box office, but I just think being set in the Depression, being kinda long, and Russell Crowe's assault antics really makes the movie a downer. I just fast forwarded to the last half of the movie - which was actually quite good - very inspirational!!!
Has anyone seen Raging Bull - I haven't but is it similar to Cinderalla man?

Raging Bull is one of the best films of all time. Better than Cinderella Man. One of Robert De Niro's best performances. A must see, 10 out of 10, in my book.

The plot is the mess, my friend Dan didn't even relize that one of the main charichter's died. No real emotion is shown through out. The premise is nice enough, and the beggaining actully makes it seem like it may end up being a good movie. Don't be fooled. If there ever was a good tresure hunting movie in there, it's long gone now.
Veronica Mars Seson One -
I know, I know I am an undeniable fan, but this show had an undenibley great first seson. Honestly if your going to by (or at least rent) one thing this seson. Let this be it. It is funny, witty, and intresting. I don't like the edited version of the pilot as much. But the rest of it is great! some of the deleated scenes are increadble, and I missed a few episodes the first time around.

I watched Mindhunters yesterday - very cool suspense movie with cool ways of killing people. A light weekend flick.

I saw Underworld Evolution
Honestly The Toronto Star got it right, when they reviewed the entire movie on the basis that you where there to see Kate Bekinsdale kick a$$ in Leather. On that basis the reviewer gave it three (out of 4) stars.
Contrarey to populer belief that is not why I went. I went because a male friend convinced me to go, and because i was suffering from Whedon withdrawl.
I must say well the movie had some decent fight scenes, it was sometimes senslessly gory, and the plot was a mess. Scott Speedman, who played Micheal - Kates lover, was quite good in the beggining. But then the writers mess that up to, by pulling a totaly unorignal ploy. However the overall spirit of the movie was fun, if they took out a few of the unnessery over the top, add on's off it would have been a good movie
Thanks for the review mystjade! I actually enjoyed the first movie in this series but then again, I'm a sci-fi fan so that's to be expected. I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie as well. There was an interview in Maxim magazine with Kate's husband (aka: director or producer) where he said she would be more violent this time around. I think that's what you were alluding to with your "sometimes senselessly gory" comment.
Thanks again and I really need to go see this movie just because. :)

Thank You
Leuthen - You are indeed correct, her husband is the director, and the movie is more gory then the first, sometimes in a good way. Sometimes not so much. But far from the most violent movie I have ever seen (Saving Privte Ryan - BTW).
Also I should add that the end alludes to a third movie, so there should be plenty more leather clad Kate to come (If that is your thing ;) )
.., so there should be plenty more leather clad Kate to come (If that is your thing ;) )
*ahem* Well, that's a thread all unto itself I believe. ;)

UCI professor is 'Lost' in cyberspace
Amy Bauer teaches music theory at UCI by day, but at night, she loses herself in the complex world of "Lost" fans. After spending months on the main "Lost" discussion board, Bauer decided to launch her own Web site, www.loststudies.com, an online scholarly journal dedicated to the show.
By PETER LARSEN
The Orange County Register
IRVINE - Professor Amy Bauer is explaining how she fell in obsessive love with the ABC-TV series "Lost" when you notice a book askew on a shelf in her barely unpacked office in the music department.
"The Wedding of the Dead." Hmm. Wonder what that's about ...
Bauer found kindred spirits - "a virtual pub for intellectuals" - in the message boards of Lost-tv.com, but says she eventually spun off her own Web site, as her more erudite posts drew fire for being too smart for the chat room.
"It began when posts like my 'Wedding of the Dead' -
Freeze that. Zoom in. Marvel at the coincidence.
"- I'd put that up and people would say, 'That isn't relevant!'" she says.
But of course it's relevant.
Because in the world of "Lost" - where a character might think about a polar bear, and a few scenes later a polar bear appears - everything is relevant to the armchair code-crackers parsing every clue on fan Web sites.
So if you notice an obscure book on Romanian folklore while learning how Bauer came to create an online scholarly journal about "Lost," and then that same book is part of the explanation, well, that couldn't be a coincidence.
Could it?
CHEESEHEADS AND X-FILES
"The first show I really became obsessed with was 'The X-Files' in its glory days," says Bauer, who came to the University of California, Irvine, in the fall as an assistant professor of music theory.
"That would also be the first time I got involved with a Web site."
When you learn that the professor was born in Green Bay, Wis., you think: Is there anyone more obsessive than a Green Bay Packer fan?
You ask the obvious question, and yes, she owns a foam rubber cheesehead. So maybe the fanatical gene was always there in her DNA.
After "The X-Files" went downhill, she switched to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," getting into it deep enough that she eventually wrote a chapter for an academic book titled "Sounds of the Slayer: Music and Silence in 'Buffy' and 'Angel.'"
"I'm an appointment TV person," Bauer says, explaining that she follows a few shows after reading reviews and looking for her favorite writers and producers - such as J.J. Abrams, creator of "Alias" and now "Lost."
In the summer of 2004, weeks before "Lost" debuted, she found Lost-tv.com where people already were talking about the yet-to-be-seen show.
"They were discussing possible mythological bases for the island," she says. "They were saying things like, 'Gee, it sounds like "The Tempest"' - I'm a big Shakespeare buff."
Their theories fascinated her: "I saw people doing what we academics do, from all kinds of life - bringing what we know to try to explain the mysteries of 'Lost.'"
When the show aired, it lived up to the hype, Bauer says.
The opening premise was simple: An airliner crashes on a tropical island and all sorts of unexplainable events soon occur, making the characters - and viewers - wonder whether they can trust anything they see, think or feel.
During the first year, Bauer spent more of her free time on the computer, and less on her piano, indexing the chat room's myriad theories: literary influences, the purgatory theory and so forth.
Eventually, she and a few of her friends started posting more academic-leaning ideas.
"I'd find myself wanting to put in footnotes," she says.
Last fall, she launched her own site, Loststudies.com, an online peer-reviewed journal.
"One of my best friends, when I started this said, 'This is so pretentious - do you mind me saying that?'" Bauer says, laughing. "I said, no, not at all. We're close.
"Internet close."
LOST IN ACADEMIA
On Bauer's Web site, you'll find her article - with footnotes! - titled "Lost De La Lettre: Messages, Mistaken Identities and the Other Who Really Believes," which looks at the letters sent or received by "Lost" characters and how they mirror the role of letters in classic literature.
You'll find sonnets on four characters and an essay on the role the show's music might play in its mysteries.
You will not, however, find this: "Cute 'Lost' Cast Pics!! HERE!!" That's a post over at the official ABC message site.
And that's part of the point, Bauer and other "Lost" fans say: The show has so many layers, there's a place for everyone to share their interests.
"The thing about Amy that's great is that she brings all this academic knowledge and this different take on things, other than, 'Why don't Jack and Kate kiss?'" says Angela Martin, or Spooky, as she's known on Lost-tv.com.
"I'm more into the analytical - understanding the symbology more than, 'What is the monster?'" says Martin, who lives near San Jose.
Bauer hopes the Web site might result in a book she'll publish, even though such studies stray from the Yale University doctorate in music on which her career is based.
Rhonda Wilcox, an English professor at Gordon College in Georgia, five years ago blazed a bit of the trail Bauer travels today, having helped create www.slaygate.tv, an online journal, now defunct, on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
"It is still fairly unusual," Wilcox says of serious study of TV shows. "But it is being done by people who take television seriously as art - which is new, because in the past, (academics) mostly wanted to analyze it as sociology."
Both Wilcox and Bauer say their shows merit serious study because when you take away the beautiful actors and dramatic camera work, what you're left with is akin to the literature of our times.
"It seems to me Dickensian," Bauer says of the way shows such as "Lost" are created and shared. "(The creators) have to come up with 22 to 24 episodes a year.
"And the rest of us are like those people waiting on the dock for the next chapter of 'Little Dorrit' to come in."

Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Desmond, appeared as German undercover agent Theo Stoller on last nights episode of 24. The scene on the rooftop where Stoller holds the black CTU agent at gunpoint (can't think of his name) and Jack tries to talk to Stoller, Theo says "put the gun down or he dies", reminded me of the scene at the begining of Season 2 of Lost with Jack, Desmond and Locke. The similarities were uncanny. It was good to see Desmond again, even if it wasn't really him.

"Paris Hilton short-listed for nun role"
LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Indian director T. Rajeevnath is to fly half way around the world to convince Paris Hilton to play Mother Theresa.
The Asian moviemaker plans to make a film about the life of the late humanitarian. He will travel to the US from Asia armed with photos of the American socialite that have been altered to make her look like the saintly nun, who died in 1997.
He said: "The pictures will be my strength when I speak to Paris. She has expressed delight that I have short-listed her to play the role. This will make our meeting easier."
Rajeevnath's agents have reportedly got in touch with Hilton's people, and a time and venue for the Stateside meeting will soon be arranged.
Hilton has appeared in a number of movies, including a big screen adaptation of the classic children's book 'The Cat in the Hat' and horror flick 'House of Wax'. But so far she is best known for a notorious homemade sex tape of her romping with ex-lover Rick Salomon.
The Albanian-born Mother Theresa will be Hilton's first lead role. The $11 million film is slated to begin shooting early next year.

Brick
So I saw it and therefore can definitively declare that it was brilliant! An all around great movie. If you can't see it in theaters definitely rent it.
Brick is a beautiful blend of the Outsiders, and The Big Sleep/LA Confidential. The beginning is a little too self aware. Too deliberately artsy. However that soon fades, and by the end every thing is this breathless gush of tension.
Brendon (Gorden Levitt), is perfect. He is a great runner (you will know what I mean once you see the movie). However the Pin, brain, and Tug are also terrific. Emile, is great, but not to the same level. She has to work on her accent. Although having dialogue that was almost entirely 'coded', didn't help her. But the script was fabulous. Unfortunately the budget (or lack thereof) showed, but only slightly. This was most obvious in the fight scenes. Although one in particular, struck me immensely. The soundtrack is really used and Incorporated, to considerable effect.
The end had me, all on edge, But the build up alone was pay off. Please someone else see it, so I can talk to you in white font.
