I think the “others” are abducting people to fill up the roster of their 43 man squamish (http://www.collectmad.com/madcoversite/index-quiz_olympics.html)team. The castaways, when joined by the tailenders, already have enough for a team. It’s just the "Others'"over-exuberant way of choosing sides, and they intend to play the castaways for the coveted CHICO (Crap Hole Island Copa d’Oro) trophy.

The DHARMA octagon symbol is obviously just a myopic fan’s incorrect rendition of the pentagonal Flutney. There’s already a Head Coxswain available on this board, over on the Anne Bonny (not sure if drabauer’s spelling is creative or Freudian), so they’ll still need to find a Probate Judge, a Field Representative and a Baggage Smasher before play can begin.
