I know i'm going to get canned for saying this as Mr Eko is a very popular character, but does anyone else think the actor playing him is very wooden? Reminds me a lot of Schwarzenegger.
Don't get me wrong, i love the character and i think the actor suits the part very well, but when he opens his mouth i just believe what he's saying.
Anyone else feel the same?

This should probabl go in the character discussion forum but..
I think Eko is an excellent addition to the cast. He and Locke will get very close because they both believe in fate and want to find out what is going on on the island. He is a religious man and only speaks when he feels it is necessary, you wont hea any crap coming out of his mouth.

I agree with you that Eko is a great character, make no mistake about it i think he is an excellent addition as well.
But i have my reservations about the actor playing him - do you really think Adewale is very realistic?
And i did think about putting it in Eko's section, but i went in there first and there weren't very many posts - so i doubt many people go there except Eko lovers. Who probably wouldn't be enjoy the post too much...

I think he's a WONDERFUL actor - very dimensional. I think the pauses and low-key delivery are a conscious decision on the part of Adewale to add mystery and depth to his portrayal. If you listen to interviews, he sounds NOTHING like his character and, in fact, has a cockney accent like Naveens, and speaks with a lighter timbre, all of which bespeak his training in several languages and education (a masters in Law before he entered the acting field).

Anyone who doubts Agbaje's acting range should seriously watch the HBO series Oz.

I'd like to watch that - i'm not sure it's out in the UK though. Naveen's cockney accent is hilarious - i'd like to hear agbaje's real accent too tho - anyone got any sound bites?

I couldn't agree more Dr.A! Just hearing him speak, you know he's keeping something to himself. Something you want to know. I'm dying for his back-story. His presence asks so many questions.
And Chronic, I'm one of the many who loved Adebisi, AAA's character on Oz. Totally different from Eko. But just as believable!

Yeah...I agree, but I feel that they have that similiarity with a significant difference in worldviews. I feel Eko and Locke are both men that believe in higher purpose/fate, etc. However, Eko's belief is rooted in God. He HOLDS TO FAITH IN GOD. At least, so far as we have been shown by TPTB in the recent episodes. Locke however, has not displayed this same faith in a Higher God....but seems to have FAITH IN THE ISLAND OR A NATURALISTIC FORCE. At least so far as we know....Locke has never shown faith in an actual, personal God (God of the Bible for instance).
When Eko quotes the Bible story of King Josiah (from the Bible) to Locke...Locke didn't know that story. If he were rooted in Judeo/Christian belief or in the monotheistic system he would probably have known it since Josiah is a prominent figure in the Scriptures. This shows the difference. Eko...faith in God. Locke...faith in a higher power/force/island/fate, but not necessarily the same GOD as Eko.
Similar in their spiritual outlooks...but grounded in different sources/foundations I believe. So yeah, they are similar, but very different at the same time. I think they will be naturally drawn to each other....but there is enough of a difference here to cause misunderstanding and conflict as well.
BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BOTH CHARACTERS!
As far as Adewale's acting...so far...so good. Maybe we will get a better feel for him in his flashback episode?
My two cents....

Oz used to be on at stupid times like 3 'o' clock in the mornin' in England meaning not many people got to see it, it's a great show!
As for AAA's acting I think a lot of it comes in the expressions he gives, like looks in his eyes etc. IMO this makes him seem a deeper character because he doesn't say what he's thinking which leads to wondering. An example of this is when he looked at the guns in the hatch. Some people interpreted it differently than others.
Also on the subject of Naveen's real accent too, I've seen him put on a well spoken London-ish voice in an interview, but I also saw an advert on Channel 4 where he spoke broad cockney!
Eko should get his own spinoff.

They have got to be kidding!! Adewale is miles ahead of Arh-nold in regard to acting skills.
By the way, here is an amusing article about him:
This is 'Mr Eko'
PASADENA, Calif. - When it comes to addressing Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, the latest star to emerge from ABC's "Lost," you might be tempted to stick to his character's name, "Mr. Eko."
A reporter's effort to do better than that brought a rueful laugh from the actor at a recent ABC party.
"What a muff-up," said the Cockney-accented Akinnuoye-Agbaje before offering this pronunciation guide:
"This is how it is: ADD-ay WAHL-ay ACK-id NOY-ay AG-bajay."
Right.
Mr. Eko.
Sir.

That's funny Fish! We've started using just the initials when referring to the actor. AAA!
:) Agreed Hodge! I'm sticking with AAA or "Triple-A" as I've seen it a couple of times. Poor guy, I love his character so much I just can't bring myself to attempt to pronounce his name although Fish1941's post does help. Perhaps now I won't butcher it so much. ;)

Leuthen, you've got to read the media (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=351941&postcount=7)post by Juanbong. I didn't know AAA was a Buddhist!

Thank you for that article about AAA. I was so incredibly embarrassed that I didn't know how to pronounce his name! Now I see I'm not alone in that. And at least I'm not a show business reporter. Only a "hillbilly" but at least not one of those sea-faring ones that took Walt. But AAA is sublime.....sigh...
And what a nice link from juanbong(I think) about AAA. Such a sweet article and I don't recall seeing the "entertainment" media saying a thing about that (although they could have). All I ever hear when I watch any of those shows is Paris and Lindsey Lohen and Tom and Katie.......The Lost crew are much more private it appears. But I like that.

No embarrassment in that LIA and as you said, you're not alone. Now you know why we refer to him as AAA. :) (I for one use that so I won't butcher either the pronunciation nor the spelling of his name.)
.......The Lost crew are much more private it appears. But I like that.
Yeah, me too. Sometimes it makes us have to look deeper to find relevant information but it's well worth the time we put into it IMHO! You're among about the most dedicated fans located in one place for any show that I've ever seen before. Welcome to our world! :)

Fish1941 posted this article portion earlier in this thread:
"This is how it is: ADD-ay WAHL-ay ACK-id NOY-ay AG-bajay."
And even with that phonetic spelling, it is still difficult to put alltogether. I think I'll just stick with AAA, much easier. ;)
(Thanks for that posting Fish1941.)

obviously there's no nigerians near you folks then *lol* - his is rather a short name.
i'm pretty sure he'd mostly be referred to as ade or wale (a-day or wah-lay) - must easier on the tongue

.....as is normal for most nigerian names
