I'm probably gonna get tomatoes hurled at me for this one :jester: but I gotta say I find Michael's flashbacks some of the best in the show.
The main reason I started watching LOST was for the drama aspect of it. I think Michael's flashbacks convey true to life events that can touch people and I think Harold Perrineau plays the part wonderfully, he's a great actor!
:soapbox:
Was just wondering if anyone else actually like Michael's story 'cause I can't seem to find many people that do - most think it's boring!

The season 1 Michael flashback was very well done and it also fit well into the fabric of the whole year. Particularly the wheelchair, car, father/parent & child, motifs. The Adrift flashback, however, was dismal. Mainly because it unnecessarily reexplored issues that we already knew and not in a compelling way. Eventhough Michael et al were adrift on a raft as it turns out rather close to shore, an artistic opportunity was lost in not showing Michael adrift in his years of being separated from Walt. I didnt need further details of the lawyer conference, although the juxtaposition with Claire's similar moment was in itself interesting. You are brave in exploring this idea for many people hated or disliked the Adrift episode in its entirety. Pursue your position, and you are an easy nominee for MoreLikeHurleyThanYou's winter hiatus award for something to the effect of This Needed to be Said... or Bravest Post/Thread in general. I wish I could remember the This Needed to be Said... one fully because sadly I had proposed it as a category:hammersel . Beyond this, I am open to a pro-Michael flashback discussion as I like the character of Michael a lot.

boonianandrophile thanks for your input! :)
Yeah I realised a lot of people hated Adrift for it's repetitive edge, and I agree it did kinda play on the same storyline, although I'm still a big Michael fan!
Let's hope TPTB can produce a different yet interesting and dramatic story for Michael next time that most viewers can enjoy.

YouFirst, I personally enjoyed Special. I thought it showed the male side when it comes to divorce and children. Now, I understand Michael and Susan weren't married, and that showed Michael's predicament. He really loved Walt, but let Susan have full custody because he thought it was best.

Now, when it comes to Adrift, I thought it was the worst flashback of any episode. And that's saying a lot. Can you say Homecoming? I thought you could!

Adrift didn't add anything to the Michael, Susan, Walt dynamic. We already knew Michael gave up custody. We knew Susan moved around a lot. Different countries for her law firm.

If I'm not mistaken, Adrift was scheduled to be someone elses flashback. TPTB changed things at the last minute. Now, maybe that had a lot to do with it. And I'm willing to put it off to that unexpected change.

Yeah Hodge it was originally supposed to be Sawyer's flashback, but I heard they changed it because Michael's story was better suited to the predicament, i.e sadness, Walt being taken etc. Thinking of it like that I can see that they possibly had limited time to give Michael a good flashback with. Like I said fingers crossed for his next backstory!

P.S. I can say Homecoming alright! Lol Painful...

You know what I'd like to see in a Michael flashback? I'm really interested in the relationship between him and Susan. The beginning! I think there's something there. There's been a rumor, that Susan may've been "special" like Walt. Or, maybe Michael is just as "special", but unaware.

Maybe Susan was introduced to Michael by Dharma. Maybe the Institute saw the potential between them and put them together. Knowing the results beforehand. JMO!

Hodge I was thinking along the same lines! The way Susan gave Michael the speech about being steadily employed and Walt's mother it sounded kinda like she had it all planned out...
Also the way Michael looked at the burning comic book made me think he was special just like Walt supposedly is. I'm thinking whatever gift Walt has, it was passed down from either Susan, Michael or the late grandpa Walter Dawson!
JMO but the way Michael reacted when Brian told him Walt was "different" seemed like he'd heard it before.

And I'd also like to see the beginning of Susan and Michael's relationship, and the problems they talked about having prior to Walt being taken by Susan... Might add that onto the "Dear Lost Santa" thread!

Yeah, kind of like someone told her that Michael couldn't be involved in raising Walt... much like Claire was told about any other person being involved in her kid's upbringing... that always struck me as very odd, the similarity between Susan and Claire...

That's a good point! I never thought of Claire when I posted, glad you pointed it out!

I didn't like the most recent flashback of Micheal. It was too boring! BLAH!

I'll agree with you that Harold Perrineau plays his part very well, but personally I find his flashbacks to be the least interesting.

Yeah his latest flashback in Adrift was VERY poor IMO. Mainly because it just rehashed everything we knew about Michael's past.

Let's hope TPTB can give us something good in the next Michael-centric episode! Whenever that will be... probably not 'til next season though.
