Hey, ILE! My trip was great, my mom hooked me up with a ton of food and also some gas money. The museum gala was great, they had a mashed potato bar. Four kinds of mashed potatoes, how can you beat that? I know it's very un-supermodel-ish, but I tried all four. YUM!

The only tough part was the weather. Saturday night was brutally cold in Philly and I was wearing a strapless dress, with strappy sandals (which means bare legs). My coat was not that much help. Wheh, that was some draft up my skirt!

Also attended a fab Daytona 500 party on Sunday. Glad racing season has started up again, I have an excuse to drink on Sunday afternoon for the next 36 weeks.

Some of our favorite, older members have begun avoiding this thread because it is "becoming full of pictures and wasted posts" to paraphrase. I couldn't agree more. And while we have some great photos here, and it is fine to post some here and there, lets work on cutting down on the clutter and post whoring a little. I don't neccesarily think a rule or anything like that is necessary, just a little self control and self-policing. Lets make this thread enjoyable to read again, and not just a tedious race for posts. Anyone, feel free to throw in your 2 cents if you choose. Either here or by PM.

Again, not trying to completely eliminate photos, or even races to posting milestones, but lets not post just to post,and lets not have 10 pages in a row of photos. Keep in mind that lots and lots of photos make viewing for our members who may be on dial-up service a real pain to load and view.

So, that being said, lets make it like it used to be, less clutter, more chat!

Please don't anyone take this as a "smack-down" or anything, just a simple, reasonable request.

I'm on dial-up, too. :( (That's part of why I don't Bork as much as the rest of you. It just lags so bad!) We're a multi-computer household, so I'm often fighting others for bandwidth.

I'm out in the sticks and the only fast internet service available is to pay an arm and a leg to the cable company. (We had to wait for awhile after moving in before the cable company even installed any wires out our way.) I see all of those Verizon $14.95 a month ads on tv and drool.

And Rose, I remember when our high school got its first computers -- TRS-80's. We used black and white TVs for the monitors and cassette tape recorders for data storage. Those of us who were really geeky read ahead in the manuals that came with the computers (our textbooks never came in that year) and made Basic program animations. I had a little stick person that would run to the middle of the screen and ask "Who does Virginia love?" The user would type in a guy's name. If they got it right, another stick figure would run out from the other side and kiss the first stick figure. If they named someone I didn't like, the two stick figures would run past each other without meeting.

I had to use a software program a few minutes ago that I don't use very often. When I opened it, a screen appeared informing me that it was updating since my last use and that the update would be complete in...

108 Minutes!!!!!!!*

I had this mad urge to start entering the numbers, but as hard as I have looked, I do not have an "execute" button on my keyboard.

*Weirdly, it said 108 minutes, but actually completed the update in less than 3.

Oh and we didn't have computers in my high school while I was there. If you had permission from the guidance counselor, you could sign up to take a programming class in your senior year that met at our local university. Those who took the class walked around carrying those big old boxes of punch cards that most of you are too young to remember. We did have electric typewriters though.

I remember punch cards even though I never actually had to use them. My grandmother was the secretary for the local ambulance auxillary and had a dumb terminal in the house. My dad used to bring home manhole-cover-sized "disks" when he was doing data storage work. I remember learning basic in jr. high, and using my Texas Instruments (TI!!) to make simple programs to impress my little brother. Ahh, isn't being a semi-old fart fun. :D

The best thing about punch cards (when you weren't the one using them) was that you could drive someone insane by knocking their box over and messing up the order of their cards. Ooh, did I just admit I did that? It was my older brother that I would do that to though, so I really don't feel bad about it.

Rose, it's amazing how a little thing like a number can become so consuming, isn't it? Good thing I don't share an office, because I probably would have made a fool of myself if someone had been in here when that came up!

VA - I remember when our high school got our first electric typewriters. There were two - and you had to be in the special advanced secretarial course to use one of them.
My husband was three years ahead of me and the set-up was similar to what you described. By the time I got to typing, they had all electric typewriters. But the teacher kept a few manual ones behind and if you got into trouble, she would punish you by making you type on them.

Also, I think he did use punch cards, at least at the beginning of his college work.

My husband is a computer engineer, so my kids have always grown up with lots of tech around the house. When my oldest was about 4 years old he was already a pro -- one day we were at a bank and they were using an electric typewriter to type out a signature card. He turned to me puzzled and asked, "Mom, what is that thing? Is it something like a printer?"

Seriously though physics I give you much credit. I withdrew from that course after the first quiz!!! I got a big fat F. LOL!!

Not me. I hated physics, and it hated me. only thing that went worse was pre-calc... hence the reason I was a liberal arts major!!! (music no less, we only count to four...)

Although now I work in information systems, so I'm not as dumb as I imply. ;)
