An ethernet card is used to connect a computer to a network. Most newer computers have the network connection built into the mother board and would not need an ethernet card in one of the expansion slots in the back of the computer
Since you have DSL you either have the built in network connection or an ethernet card in one of the expansion slots. I have heard of networking using USB ports (just ask tiki about these).

At the risk of becoming the BBR's own "Debbie Downer," I had a few comments to make on the smoking discussion. I am not a smoker, but I was born and raised in KY, a tobacco growin' state that for many years has held the title of the state with the highest percent of adults smoking. (I suspect that the title would also hold true for kids, but that wouldn't be legal so I guess we'll never know.)

Anyway, I think some of the "defensiveness" that I've seen on the part of smokers is because they have been at the receiving end of too many condencending remarks from non-smokers. They have people come across to them like, "Don't you know the risks? You must be an idiot or weak-willed."

Know that much of at least some of the negativity you get is really concern for your well-being that isn't always expressed in the most tactful ways.

Also, please know that not all non-smokers are looking down on you. I have witnessed enough people attempting to stop smoking to know that it is not stupidity or weakness that keeps many smokers smoking.

My uncle became addicted to both cigarettes and alcohol when he was 9 years old. I believe he was about 50 before he stopped drinking. Somewhere around that time he got a mouth cancer and had half of his tongue removed. And still, he was not able to quit. It took him another 20 years (and a voice box cancer and a really bad case of pneumonia) before he was able to quit. And more recently, I watched several smokers in my husband's family struggle with it after his oldest sister lost her husband at age 41 after a difficult battle with cancer.

So I understand (to the extent that I can) that it is a very difficult addiction to break. I hope and I pray that those of you who smoke and do want to quit will find both the motivation and the program that works for you.

Okay, I have just made an observation that I am sure has been made before (it has already been noted that I am very slow!) I noticed the wide range of occupations we had here. We have computer people, lawyers, accountants, managers, non managers, etc. As well as students, and people of all ages. Honestly, there I lots of people here I wouldn't have picked to be here, including myself. Let's be honest, the stereo typical person, in my world anyway, who would be here would be a "computer geek" or a "high school kid", but that is just not the case with us. We are all over the map. I think that is sooooooo cool. I mean, I know some of us are trying to hide this from our boses, but some of us are the bosses. It is just wild when you think about it. It is amazing what a shared love for something will do:)

Next week! Thursday at 1:30. When I worked, I had a high speed connection, so I know what I'm missing. My brother just got DSL, which made my Mom say, "Well, I wonder what the difference in cost would be" to which I replied - "I will pay the difference." And I will; so it's a win-win situation. And she will so enjoy the difference! She spends a couple of hours on line every day, and is always emailing pictures, so this will be a joy for her. I can't wait!!!!!!
