View Full Version : Bernard Rose = candyman?

I did a boolean search but couldn't turn up that anyone has associated Bernard and Rose with Bernard Rose who wrote the screenplay Candyman, based on Clive Barker's classic horror story.

In Everyone Hates Hugo, Rose saved her candy bar for Bernard, said he had a mouthful of sweet teeth, so I think it's a solid connection. If so, it foreshadows a sinister aspect for one or both characters. The character Candyman was all nice and genteel on the surface but full of rage underneath...

Here's a synopsis (from dvdmaniacs.net) for those who don't know the story.
There's no way to this day I'd EVER say candyman 5 times in a row, even when not looking into a mirror. Scared the bejesus out of me.
Structured around the idea of urban legends and ghost stories, the film gets tremendous mileage out of its setting of urban blight and decay and also manages to work on a the level of socio-political commentary. The ghoulish but seductive figure of Candyman - a variation of sorts on the legend of "Bloody Mary," who can be summoned by calling his name five times while looking into a mirror - arises out of the context of racial discrimination and bigotry in the United States. A well educated descendant of his slave ancestors, "Candyman" was tortured to death by irrational zealots for daring to fall in love with a white woman during the time of the Civil War. With such a backstory, it is possible to see Candyman in a more sympathetic light than, say, Freddy Kruger or Michael Myers, though he remains a formidably frightening presence.

I was not aware of the correlation, nice piece of information.

This is one of the first correlations I've seen that allows a window of opportunity for Rose and Bernard to be a bit more sinister then they appear. We could be grasping at straws since we have no real back story for them, other then they're married and he has a sweet tooth. I'd like to see more hints thrown at us, though. I'm still grappling with Libby and her not-so-good-attitude.

To this day I absolutely will NOT say the word Candyman more than twice in a row..... Mirror or not.:scared:

That is a very interesting correlation you've got there.

However, I find it highly unlikely that it is anything more than a similie. Yes, perhaps Rose and Bernard were persecuted for their love, but I find it extremely hard to believe that either of them would turn out evil.

The Candyman mythology centers around a slave that fell in love with his master's daughter. He was found out, and dragged into the fields of the plantation. His arm was cut off, and replaced with a jagged hook, thrust into his stump. Finally, he was covered in honey, which attracted a swarm of bees that engulfed him and killed him. He then came from beyond death to take vengeance.

To me, Bernard and Rose seem to be one of the truly pure things on the island. However, Candyman's love was pure, and this show DOES love to mess with us. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Lostmio, great post !!!
I love reading and noticing all of these different connections in Lost
Hopefully they do go deeper into the lives of both Bernard & Rose now that they found each other.

I'm with MLHTY: the writers toss its lots of references to other films and books and I'm betting that not all of them have any real relevance, it's just a fun factoid.

After all, sometimes a cigar is just cigar.

I have never read this book or seen the movie, but, if you are in the process of killing someone - why would you waste time replacing a cut-off arm ?

IMHO - Clive Barker stories tend to stink when turned into movies. I can't imagine this film being any different.

To be honest now that you brought it up, he may have replaced it himself after death. I haven't seen the movie since October, and then I only saw bits and pieces. It's been over a year since I saw that scene.

However, the movie is quite beautifully done cinematically. The story lacks somewhat in places, but it is well done in many others.

Hmmmm. Another missing limb. Sooner or later someone is going to find a big pile of appendages on the island! I've said before that I think B&R are somehow connected to the DeGroots. They are the right age. I'm not saying that they are somehow 'in the know' about the island goings on, but maybe they were involved at some point in the past and their backstories will help illuminate the whoe DeGroot/Hanso thing.

EW's Kristen speaks with a crooked and confused tongue but she was dead on when she said Lost is like "crack dipped in chocolate"...

mmmhuh, yep.
Missing limbs = some kind of connection to craphole, aka misfit, island.

Interesting theory too: a connection between Rose & Bernard & the DeGroot's uptopian vision. Now that you've mentioned it, it makes sense. Some of us on this forum who came of age in the late 60's - early 70's can testify that bi-racial couples were more than a small part of the whole consciousness-raising thing.
So maybe.
One thing that works against it, imo, is that the writing team overall is too young to truly appreciate the impact.
I'm keeping an open mind. Thanks for this think...
