I want to remind everybody we have guidelines (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1613) regarding signatures. You have read the welcome forum, right? At first a couple people stretched it a little, but now a number of people are stretching it a lot. Nobody wants to bug people about signatures, but that means you need to take responsibility and keep them reasonable. Please check the guidelines and make sure your sig is under control.
Please keep this thread bumped by posting after you read it and check your sig. If I sticky it it will become invisible.
Thanks.

LIW, I want to comply, however, I'm not sure how 150h x 600w convert into actual inches shown on the board. I thought mine might have been too big height wise but I saw others that were comparable so I didn't change it. Could you help with a visual. Thank you.

Mel, right click on your pic and click properties. That will show you the size of it.
LostInWilderness

You can right click on the image and select properties, and it will tell you the size of the image. Yours is 464x213. You can get the size from photobucket and from windows explorer too.

Lol!
There is another forum I sometimes frequent (a Poker forum) and the signatures and avatars considerably slow down the time it takes to load a page. So what I would just do is block all images from that site, which thankfully meant it would only take 1/10th of the time to load a page.
But sadly I can't bring myself around to blocking images from this site, because I love the signatures and avatars that people come up with! :)

Hey otherdruid, it probably looks smaller because your monitor is set at a higher resolution. You might check and see if this is the case.

The 150x600 thing is for the image right? Or is it for the whole sig?
cinderellabop
01-06-06, 08:27 PM
150 x 600 for the image, LIHE. But if you have an image, we'd prefer you to keep the text small. Yours isn't too bad--if you reduce some of the extra space and make the font size be 1 (like in my sig), it would be fine.
LostInWilderness
01-06-06, 08:37 PM
Yeah, if you read the guidelines, it's an either/or with image/text. If you have an image, keep your text to a minimum. With no image, you can have more text.

Since this is a request from the Mods... should it stickied in all the forums? Lostaways isn't the only place people have big sigs. Is my sig too big?
clayseason1
01-09-06, 02:07 PM
I'm confused. It's my understanding that the sig should be no larger than 600 x 600 pixels.
So if the sig graphic is 500 x 200 pixels - that should be fine, right?
If we are counting text - how do we determine the pixel range for that?
ILikeLostBrunettes

I'm a misunderstood individual. But I'm not counting sig sizes.
The old board was no bigger than 600 wide, and 150 long. But I've seen so many massive signatures since the move, I haven't even bothered to crack down on signature sizes...I'd feel bad asking "X" amount of people to change when I know I've missed an unknown amount of other posters. Ugh.

I'm confused. It's my understanding that the sig should be no larger than 600 x 600 pixels.
The 600 x 600 limit was actually for posting images within the actual message. But signature images, because they appear every time you post, should be no bigger than 600 wide by 150 high.
We kinda let this one slide for quite a while, but it's getting out of hand, and LIW is right... it's time to crack down. When the new episodes start on Wednesday, we're going to be straining the server as it is. We don't need to have excessively large graphics to add to the problem.

Much better, 2Naive. If you're on a Mac, you can usually tell the image size by opening it up in a new window. Depending on where you're hosting it, it will usually display the image size at the top of the browser window. This is how I check it when I'm at home on my eMac.

Glad there's a thread like this, is mine too big? It's not one thing, it's two pictures and text, so I'm not sure how large it is pixel wise.
As far as pictures go, the guidelines state a maximum of 150 pixels high by 600 pixels wide. Where the confusion occurs is that all pictures in your signature count against that defined size. Not everyone can get it perfect, but close would be nice.
Blackhawk
06-13-06, 02:46 AM
Sweet Doo,
If you right click on the pictures in you sig, and select properties, it will tell you the dimensions of the pic in pixels.
For example, your top pic is 165 pixels high X 591 pixels wide; while your bottom pick is 120 X 600.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Blackhawk. I guess I missed that part of his post.

I just wanted to give you all a heads up on sig sizes since S3 is about 21 days away. Yay, about time!!!! Make sure you read the guidlines on just how big your sigs can be, and please don't abuse the guidelines (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1613):
AVATARS & SIGNATURES:
Avatars are limited in size to 100 x 100 pixels. Maximum signatures size is 150h x 600w. Please also keep any text in your signature to a minimum (which means an additional line or two if you have an image, or a maximum of six lines is normal size if it's a purely text signature). Failure to comply with this rule will result in being unable to have an avatar and/or signature.
So far, mostly everyone is alright, but I wanted to make sure that the newer people of the community understood too. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or leave a note in this thread. That's why it's here. Thanks everyone!
I think my sig is okay, but it's the first one I've ever had, so as long as there appears to be a forum where we can receive verification, can you tell me it, it does indeed, conform to the established guidelines?

kd8ch, I'm not a mod, obviously, but your image is 150X300--well within guidelines size, plus you only have two lines of text--again, well within guidelines.

Yep. Your Hiatus Award pic is 150x150 pixels alone. It looks like you could put them all on the same line, though and then you'd be fine.

While this is bumped, I'll take this opportunity to remind everybody that the extra allowance for hiatus awards ends next Wednesday. Those of you out of compliance because of your award, plan to make adjustments by then.
I know it seems like I'm being a hardass, but the sig guidelines are for our low-bandwidth members, and everybody needs to respect that. Also, from your perspective, it may seem like a small matter to get a sig warning, but to the mod staff, it's a seriously irritating issue that takes up way too much of our time. You guys know the guidelines, please keep your sigs in check. There's no reason for us to have to warn any veteran.

Sucks you have to take control of this situation LIW.
Explaining pixel widths to most people is a bit futile. Just hope you understand most people don't understand the rules (as a web designer, I know that the word "pixels" reminds most people of fairy dust rather than computers).
It's "technical".
You do a great job, despite the obstacles. :)
Good point, H4P. However, some just don't give a damn and that's where we run into problems. I've contacted several members, when I see their sigs, letting them know that next Wed (Oct 4) is the cutoff date and so far, all have been more than understanding.
We relaxed the rules a bit during the hiatus...but we're coming up to the S3 premiere when we'll have a ton of new posters ala - (Hey! Did you see the DHARMA symbol on the shark? Just asking cause I don't feel like reading the forum guidelines and I know I was the only one who saw it! K THX BAI!)
Y'all know the guidelines and if/when (trust me, it'll happen) someone does show up with something out of line, don't flame them to death. Just post a note and, if need be, drop us mods a line and we'll take it from there.
Thanks y'all!
Bumping.
Come on folks, work with us. Some of you need to get your sig pics down to size. You know who you are. ;)

It looks like it's time to bump this up again to remind everyone of our rule about signature sizes. We've all been a bit lax during the hiatus, but the show is back now, so let's all work on reducing our signature sizes, OK?
Bumping again. There are lots of signatures that are very over-size. Also, let's keep the size of animated signatures down. File sizes need to stay within spec.
We are currently updating to include a max file size for signatures. There are far too many animated sigs that are in excess of 1MB. We'd like to keep them down to 600Kb or less, because the large files are hell on dial-up.

Thanks for responding, I will take care of that. :)
Please also keep in mind that the 150h x 600w restriction is not per image. That is a total signature image size.
Also, as I posted in the Help Desk forum (at least I think I did), we are adding a restriction to the bit size of signatures. There are a lot of animated signatures that are reaching well into 2MB and that is just too much. The new limit will be 600Kb, which still allows for good animation if it's done correctly. I know that this is not in the posted guildelines yet, but it will be soon enough. I'm just posting it here as a heads up.

Thanks, TPTP. I've created a few animated sigs that I personally felt were too big Kb-wise. No one ever called me on them, but I worried that I was killing people that have dial-up. Now I have a barometer to use. That really does clear up a lot of things.

I know this sounds like I am droning out everyone, but please make sure you follow the signature sizes guidelines, available here (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31509) for your convenience.
Signature Sizes
Avatars and Sigs. Avatars are limited in size to 100 x 100 pixels. Maximum signatures size is 150h x 600w @ 600KB. Please also keep any text in your signature to a minimum (which means an additional line or two if you have an image, or a maximum of six lines in normal size if it's a purely text signature). Failure to comply with this rule will result in being unable to have an avatar and/or signature. We have a section in our Help Desk forum that will help you with uploading avatars and sigs.
Thank you for your time and patience. Let us know if you need any help or have any questions.
