Monster and smoke two different things?

Okay, we have seen the "monster" or "security system" rip out trees and rip the pilot out of the plane. But the smoke has approached Locke and Eko and has not bothered them or has been violent. When watching Eko's episode, it almost seems like the trees rip out, and then the camera angle comes from in the trees and out towards Eko, from behind whatever was ripping out the trees. Does anyone else think that the security system is security for the smoke, and they are two different things? May be far fetched...

What I think is that there are at least 2 smoke creatures.

The big worm like thing and the little mosquito like thing.
I didn't hear the loud syren though.
