View Full Version : What will Sun do?

Poor Sun gets hardly any comments in her section.
Sun is Kate's best buddy on the island. They showed a lot of scenes of her in the first season watching Kate and Jack interact. When Kate pawed through the messages in the bottle and then said she hadn't said goodbye to Sawyer, Sun seemed surprised by Kate's reaction.
Be forewarned, I believe Sun is much more of a scheming character than she is given credit for. I've alwaya thought her plan to ditch Jin, after not telling him what working for her father was likely to entail, was extremely cold-blooded. I think Jin would have ended up on the bottom of Seoul Hatbor wearing concrete boots had she gone through with it. I also think it was pretty sleezey of her to fake she didn't know English and eavesdrop on conversations for so long. In fact, I suspect her of providing Shannon with the keys to the gun case because she had listened in on Kate telling Jack what was in the case. Then there is the little matter of her poisoning Jin.
That said... how is Sun going to react to Jack giving Kate the cold-shoulder and upsetting her? How is she going to react to Ana if Jack appears to be turning to her as he treats Sun's best friend Kate poorly?
We all expect a ruckus between Kate and Ana when the long delayed meeting occurs. I think Sun is also going to be heavily involved as she schemes in the background. I think we may see a darker side of her emerge. Since Jin seems to like Jack, this may be a new story line for the Korean couple.

You know Homer, I thought it was an omen when Jin told Sun to let Jack look after her. This is when the rafters set sail. I thought it told of a conflict between Kate and nurse Sun. Remember, they really worked well together when trying to save Boone. But bringing the rafters home, rather killed that idea. She was so delighted to find Jin safe.
I don't see Sun as a sinister character. Although, your point of her and Kate forming a bond is definitely true. And there's no doubt, whose side she's going to be on when Kate decides she not ready to give up Jack when Ana-Lucia comes-a-calling. But I don't see anything further. And that maybe my problem.

Actually, I hop that Sun will not take sides in any possible Ana/Kate conflict. Yes, she has already formed a bond with Kate, but she and Jin (from what we've seen in "The 23rd Psalms") have also initiated first signs of friendship toward Ana-Lucia.
If Ana-Lucia and Kate do clash, Sun would be wise to stay out of it. And she does not strike me as a stupid woman.

This may turn out to be an even more interesting side story now that Sawyer was involved in the kidnap scheme.
I've mentioned before that, while rewatching Season One, I was struck by how much they showed Sun observing Kate and Jack. In fact, I believe her flashback to Jin courting her at the party came after she watched Jack and Kate flirting. Also, in the messages in the bottle scene Sun seemed genuinely surprised and shocked when she realized how upset Kate was over not saying goodbye to Sawyer.
I also believe, even though it seems counter-intuitive at first, that one of Kate's most important roles in the narrative is to hold the group together as it tends towards fragmentation. Just as she worked dilegently to integrate Sawyer into the group in the beginning, I think she will try to shield Sawyer from being ostricized over his hair-brained power play.
I think Sun is still a Jater at heart, and Sawyer's latest stunt isn't going to raise his stock in her eyes. There might be some friction between her and Kate as she tries to push Kate towards Jack, but Kate refuses to abandon Sawyer.
I'll be curious to see how this little side thread plays.

Wonderful thread, Homer. I agree with the above statements. I believe Sun had to have picked up a few tricks from her dear Father. She's one smart cookie and the other Losties may be in for a shock or two. I can't wait to learn more about her.

Sun's intentions were never to poison Michael, just to keep her husband from going on the raft. That doesn't make her a sinister lady. Yes, the plan was sneaky - that just shows she's got brains and that she was forced to take drastic measures to keep her husband alive.
Wouldn't you do the same if Mrs. Noodleman was going to go off on a raft with a bunch of lunatics leaving you stranded alone on an island with people like Jack and Locke being the leaders?
So she let Kate take the heat. That's alright. Girlfriends stick up for each other. She'll make up for it later, when Kate gives birth to demon spawn.

Nanny Sun takes the triplets out for a jaunt in the Locke-made stroller for three. As they enter the Dark Territory, Nanny Sun says:
Ethan 1! Stop biting Ethan 2's tail! Ethan 2! Dont think that I didnt see you throw Charlie at Ethan 1 first! And Ethan 3! How many times have I told you not to do that in public!
A typical day involving Kate's best buddy helping out while Kate joins the next adventure or runs away from love. An adventure probably caused the pregnancy. :baby: :baby: :baby:

Good thing you didn't word that, "stranded alone on an island with people like Kate." I might be dodging well aimed frying pans and dishes if you had. http://jazzopolis.com/pix/crazy.gif

However she's going to react, we probably won't see it. Sun is undoubtedly the most wasted character of the season. It's nice to see her again in House of the Rising Sun.
I think Sun is one of the characters sent or called to the island, not Jin, and I think she matters to the real story, but not this dharma distraction. Another reason to hope the series gets back to the main storyline is getting to see Sun again.
I agree that Sun is not supposed to be so passive. Normally I would expect her to manipulate things behind the scenes with Jack and Kate, but she's completely forgotten this season so what makes sense based on the character we know isn't going to happen because of negligence by TPTB.

I think you should be patient and wait and see how Sun's storyline will be revealed over the next several years. We're only in Season 2.

I'll be around, but there's no excuse for neglecting her so badly this season, imo.

this dharma distraction
Can we just refer to it like this from now on?

I don't think Sun's father has anything to do with dharma, and if he suddenly does, it's an after-thought. I think daddy issues is the common theme among the lostaways, and those with daddy issues are involved in the core mystery, not the dharma distraction (sure we can SHBL).
