I'm a big sci-fi and fantasy geek. So I watch all the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and would recommend them. Also:

Anything Jerry Bruckheimer makes: With only a FEW exceptions (Kangaroo Jack and King Arthur) everything he touches turns to Box Office Gold. Especially when Michael Bay directs (Bad Boys, Armageddon)

And anything Pixar puts out:
Finding Nemo
Incredibles
Those movies all have heart and are so fun to watch. :lol

I also watch all of Hugh Jackman's films. Love him!

god, there are faaaaaaar too many to count.

Casablanca (greatest movie ever, greatest dialogue ever, coolest character ever - rick blaine/humphrey bogart)
The Shawshank Redemption (Freeman's best performance, best use of narration ever)
The Usual Suspects (come on. it's just cool. Keyser Soze, anyone?)
Swingers (i don't need to say anything about this. this movie is my inspiration)
LOTR Trilogy (insert drooling fanboy line here)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (one of the greatest love stories i've ever seen)
Field of Dreams (good tip for the guys: if you meet a girl who doesnt like field of dreams, drop her like a bad habit...unless she has an oral fixation, then you can work around it)
Godfather 2 (over the first one simply because of bobby deniro)
Saving Private Ryan (and for taht matter, can i lump Band of Brothers in here too?)
The Great Escape (Steve McQueen: the king of cool)

yeah, there are TONS more...but i don't wanna drag this shizzy out.

I still like "Die Hard"--it's the best of [many] bad rip-offs and copycats and the movie that started the entire "one man against unkown odds genre...

"North By Northwest"--As good as it gets!

"Dawn Of The Dead"--I normally don't like remakes but this one--to me at least--is superior to the original...

"Step Into Liquid"--As perfect a surfer movie as "Endless Summer"...

"Real Genius"--Smart dialogue, infinitely quotable and Val Kilmer's best performance...

"Psycho"--Hitchcock's superlative mad man movie. Great in every respect...

Everyone needs to see Team America World Police. The only movie I have ever seen that is funnier than this is Monty Python and the Holy Grail which is the funniest movie of all time!

Anyways, go see it. If you get offended easily, then you will when you see this movie...but you should see it anyways because it is so Fooking hilarious! Plus it was created by Trey Parker who is my hero so that should be a reason to see it right there! Go see it. Now. No seriously...why the hell are you still reading this. Go f**king see Team America!!

Oh, and go see The Nightmare Before Christmas too because it is also one of the best movies ever created.

Last night I saw Renee Zellweger's new movie, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" and it was great!!! This movie is the sequel to Bridget Jones' Diary. I was laughing so hard my sides were aching. It was absolutely hilarious...:rollin

Taken from the novel written by Helen Fielding, the screenplay was done by Andrew Davies. Davies also wrote the screenplay for the original movie, BRD.

The story starts about 4 weeks into Bridget's new relationship with Mark Darcy, brilliantly played by Colin Firth.:b Bridget starts to have her doubts about the viability of her relationship with Mark though, by all accounts, she should be perfectly happy having the "perfect" boyfriend in her life. However, her petty jealousies creep in when Mark's new intern turns out to be a very long-legged beautiful "younger woman" which leads to hilarious results. To top it off her old boyfriend and former boss, Daniel Cleaver, wonderfully played by Hugh Grant, pops back into her life. To make matters worse her trusted old friends are full of advice and feed her petty jealousies with extremely laughable results. Without giving too much away, Bridget ends up in prison in Thailand on a mistaken drug charge and is looking at 15-20 years as a sentence.

This movie had me ROFL so hard I had tears streaming down my face. The cinematography and director were excellent. The punch lines wonderfully executed.

If you want to see a movie to perk up your spirits and have an enjoyable day/evening at the movies, this is the one to go to...8)

My fave movies would be (besides Lord of the Rings of course)

Kill Bill I and II
Rudy!
Die Hard
The Sandlot
The Village (i was probably the only one who liked this one)
Space Balls (best parody ever)

By the way, saw Alexander. It probably could've been good, but it was really long and mostly every actor suffers from overacting. Good battle scenes tho!

What movies do you all despise? (Gigli is not an option here:p )

This past weekend I rented The Chronicles of Riddick and Stepford Wives. COR is a wonderful movie with Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Thandi Newton and Judi Dench in the lead roles. Though I don't think Diesel is the greatest of actors, he played the role of Riddick extremely well. Urban was wonderful as Lord Vaako :b as was Thandie Newton as Lady Vaako. Dench is always excellent and was wonderful in the role of an ambassador. The cinematography and CGI effects were incredible. I enjoyed the special features on the DVD because they explained the world of the necromongers and the back story which increased the enjoyment and understanding of Riddick's character and world. This movie is well worth watching. In fact, I am going to buy it. 8)

Stepford Wives features Nicole Kidman in the lead role. Though Kidman is a great actress, this version of Wives did not have the suspense of the original movie with Katherine Ross in the lead role. It certainly does not have anything to do with the ability of the actors but more to do with the script and the director. About one third of the way through the movie I started gardening I was so bored. Not recommended.

Van Helsing I saw in the movies and despite, the fact it did not get rave reviews, I enjoyed the DVD thoroughly. Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale and David Wenham are wonderful. So is the actor who plays Dracula, Richard Roxburgh. The DVD has some great additional features including bloops and interviews of some of the actors. The special effects were awesome and the cinematography was great. Highly recommended! :)

Oh, let's see what hasn't been mentioned yet. How about some foreign fillums.

Housekeeping by Bill Forsyth. (He's Scottish.)
The Funeral by Juzo Itami.
Baraka by... I have no idea.
The Mahabharata by Peter Brook.
Enlightenment Guaranteed (Erleuchtnung Garantiert) by Doris Dörrie.
Father Ted: The Holy Trilogy. (If you watch all three series as a single oeuvre, it's just amazing.)

And I know it's "only" a British children's TV series, but... The Clangers by Oliver Postgate. Sheer bloody genius.

Awww, that's a good (but sad) story. Jake isn't yet looking at me that way, but he's spoiled. He'll only look at me that way if I've got a treat (especially a slice of cheese). But then again, he treats me differently than he does the rest of the family, since I'm the one who feeds him, walks him, grooms him (though he does't particularily like that), plays with him, trains him, etc. Unfortunately, I didn't get him from a shelter; I got him from a backyard breeder (I was only 11 at the time, and without the internet, I didn't have a clue about the overpopulation problem). But I will always get future animals from shelters or rescues.

That breed you're thinking of, could it have been a Belgian Shepherd your friend was thinking of? They kind of look like German Shepherds, but bigger and "fluffier" (in other words, thicker, longer hair).

One of the best movies I've seen is Life as a House, beautiful movie and just amazing.

well, here's a list, off the top of my head, for movies from 2004:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...flat out one of the best love stories i've ever had the pleasure of viewing.

Kill Bill: Volume 2...for some reason a lot of people found it slow and a bit dull...personally, i just thought it was QT being QT, letting character and dialogue drive the film. carradine was oscar caliber, i thought.

Incredibles...the name says it all. i rank it among my top 5 superhero movies of all time.

Spider-Man 2...and my #1 superhero movie of all time...

Shaun of the Dead...four words: best. zombie. movie. ever. one of the funniest movies of 2004...yet the 3rd act was also really, really creepy and featured some of the best zombie action in awhile.

Sideways...some of the younger crowd might not appreciate this one, as it's kind of a slowly paced film...but man, what great performances all around, and just hilarious moments scattered throughout alongside heartbreaking moments. the scene on the porch between giamatti and madsen is sublime.

unfortunately i never got to see some of the movies i was really looking forward to..."ray," "friday night lights," "the motorcycle diaries" among them. saturday is "the life aquatic"...wes anderson, owen wilson, bill murray? i'm going to go out on a limb here and say "i love this movie" even without seeing it. you just can't go wrong with those three in the mix.

Great list, Jek. I loved all 6 of those. Here's what I would add:

A Very Long Engagement - This is the new movie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amelie and Delicatessan, and, like the former, it stars Audrey Tautou. It's about a girl in world war I whose boyfriend/true love is one of five soldiers who are sentenced to death for self-mutilation (to get out of the war). Like usual, Jeunet's love for creative storytelling shines through and, even with the beautifully filmed and highly disturbing war scenes scattered throughout, the movie has a whimsical quality. The only problem is it's a little hard to connect with emotionally, since I think it was designed to confuse and disorient the viewer with a huge amount of information to take in, almost until you feel detached from what you're experiencing (like the characters in the film feel). That would be neat, but it's even more confusing because the film is in french, so on top of all that, you also have to follow it in subtitles.

The Ladykillers - This isn't the Coen Brothers' best film by any means, but it's definitely worth seeing and has some hilarious performances, especially from Tom Hanks and Irma P. Hall.

Garden State - Zach Braff's (Scrubs) writing/directorial debut probably surprised everyone. This movie is very clever, has some great performances and there's a real connection made with the audience. There's a scene where Zach Braff's character promises to talk to his Dad at some point and, when that hadn't happened for a while, I found myself thinking about how disappointed I'd be if it didn't happen. It did, and it was great. The only problem with this movie is that it's a little awkward structurally, and has what I would call a wandering third act. But, it's an impressive debut.

Mean Girls - Best high-school movie since Clueless. This movie has a lot more to say than one might expect.

I'm Not Scared - Find this movie and see it. It's sort of a suspense movie about a boy in the Italian countryside who discovers another boy being kept in a hole in the ground. I don't want to give too much detail about the story, but... I loved it. Also, some of the best performance by child actors I've ever seen.

Movies I'm still planning on seeing: Finding Neverland, Bad Education, Life Aquatic, Kinsey

They are coming out with a remake of "Flight of the Phoenix" I saw the original years ago, and I remember that dispite it being a monument to British cheese in cinema at some points, it stood well regarding the human will.

Another older movie in the same vein is "The Sands of the Kalahari" Any "Lost" fans would do well to check out these two "plane crash survivors" oldies.

i can't really recommend any recent movies i've seen, haven't been impressed with anything lately, but i've not seen garden state or life aquatic. wes anderson never fails!

i will say that i nominate napoleon dynamite for worst film of the year. i can't begin to tell you how excited i was for this piece of crap. looked right up my alley but it turned out to have the WORST plotline and had a wanna-be wes anderson/welcome to the dollhouse feel.

My favorite movies, organized by genre, and association. Ie: If you like LA confidential you will like The Usual Suspects, but you wont necessarily like my comedic choices.

The coming of age tales: Stand By Me, War of the Buttons, Good Will Hunting.

Drama: All the presidents men, Red.

Action: Frequency (An overlooked but excellent move), The Good the Bad And The Ugly (so Much more then a Western), LA Confidential, The Usual Suspects, Blade Runner, Vertigo, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dead Man, Run Lola Run, Witness, The Fugitive.

Comedy: Black Adder(not technically a movie.. but), Love Actually, High Fidelity (John Cusack, Music, and Nick Hornby - need I say More?)
