Everyone here ok? Family safe?

I can't stop watching/reading about it. It's so amazing and I'm just in awe of nature and it's power, but the destruction it's caused is so devastating.

I totally forgot that my friend was in Indonesia for the holidays...

...until I read her post on LJ that she's ok. Whew.

My boyfriend is from Sri Lanka, but as far as we know his family is OK. There's no way to contact those in the Jaffna region as the phone lines aren't working, but they don't live near the coast so they should be all right.

It's incredible. The death toll on Sri Lanka alone is almost as high as the number of inhabitants in my town... and I have no doubt it will be higher before long.

They were just saying on the radio that one Swiss charity which coordinates the donations here has got such a reponse that the website is almost overlaoded, which is a good sign that a lot of people are donating.

It seems that every nation in the industrialized world is donating big bucks except France.

It's just awful :(

1500 swedes are missing, that they know of. Appearntly another 1500 have traveled on their own, not registered on planes and such.

death count is up to 120,000.

I can't for my life imagine how it is in those places. Homes and families are destroyed :(

All you can do is pray and donate money.

Donate to your local Red Cross and specify where you want it to go.

Doctors without Borders

Unicef.

Amazon.com has started a charity as well.

Many many charities. Doesn't matter which one.

Anything. Any amount will do, even loose change in a jar. It doesn't matter how little.

Wow.

Someone even mentioned that with the risk and spreading of infection, as well as the fact that most people are without basic supplies, many more will die because of it and the number could eventually be near 1 million.

sunflower: thank you so much for sharing your family's photos with us. I have been just heartbroken over the damage and devistation that has happened for all those people. My heart just cries for all the lost lives and broken families. News has died down about the situation but we all know that it still has to be incredibly awful to be there. I mourn for all the missing and dead. *prayer said*

The only thing I thought I could do was give money, and I did. 3c's list of reputable charities is a good place to start. Any amount is still needed. For once, the whole world has come together in the face of such tragedy. And it wasn't created by "man". Seems like a heavy message to take in. Certainly a strange time to be alive and witness the overwhelming power of nature. It truly shows me that we are all fragile and that everyday is a gift to share with friends. I am glad to be here with my friends.
