Would love to see Terrence Howard win for Hustle & Flow. Kind of disappointed Charlize Theron wasn't nominated for North Country which IMO was much better than Reese's performance in Walk The Line (for which she'll probably win)...
Hope Michelle Williams wins for Brokeback Mountain.

Paul Giamatti - CINDERELLA MAN
Y'all have no idea how happy that made me when I read that this morning. After giving two Oscar-worthy Leading performances in as many years, that little bald bastard is finally getting the credit he so richly deserves. I love this guy.
If someone ever made a movie out of my life, I'd want either Paul Giamatti or Miguel Ferrer to play the role.
I also don't get all the love that's going on for Crash. Matt Dillon's performance was the best thing about that contrived pile of Altman cutting room scraps. But Best Screenplay? Best Picture? I beg to differ. Hostel was more believable. Oh, wait, that missed the December 31 deadline. Well, there's always 2007!
I think it's kind of odd that you have to go all the way down to #42 on the list of Top Movies of 2005 (http://www.leesmovieinfo.net/WBOYearly.php?y=2005) before you get to the first of the Motion Picture of the Year nominees. That said, and before anyone says it, yes I realize some of these movies came out late in the year, however, at least 1 came out in May, I believe.
This was just a random thought as the Oscars aren't really all that important to me personally.

kiwipat, I notice you didn't post the exhaustive list of nominees, which is fine by me. But you failed to include one of the 'Big' ones:
Best Achievement in Directing
Brokeback Mountain - ANG LEE
Capote - BENNET MILLER
Crash - PAUL HAGGIS
Good Night, and Good Luck - GEORGE CLOONEY
Munich - STEVEN SPIELBERG

Leuthen, too often, the Oscars are synonymous with the big moneymakers. A semi-serious bloated production could almost predictably get a nomination judging from its box office. I like when the merits of a film stand on its own, not the Box Office.
Batman Begins got a couple of technical nominations, Best Editing & Best Sound Design.
I'm so happy "A History of Violence" got a couple of nominations.

I was actually disappointed Syriana wasn't nominated in the Best Motion Picture category. In my opinion, it was the best movie of 2005.
I'm with you KF2! Glad Terrence Howard got a nod for that unbelievable performance in Hustle & Flow.
Also, glad Crash wasn't forgotten. I was surprised Sandra Bullock has something other than a comedic flair.

Watched hustle and flow last night solely to see Howard's performance and I was not disappointed. A richly detailed film w/ authentic sincere acting by howard. I was pleasantly surprised. The ending was really good too, just when you think he is all set, they turn the tables on him. Good dialogue also.
But she has!
Doh! I'm such an idiot - how did I miss it? Ok, hope Charlize wins then! I love her.

I thought Crash was too heavy handed - it was unique but also very grating. Often times people can be blunt in their racism but i feel that the movie only acted as a mirror of our society without any offering of resolution. In this way the movie is not very redeeming and appears lazy in its story-telling.
