View Full Version : When is a Newbie no longer a Newbie

Okay, as of late we have been discussing being nice to the newbies, to give them a chance to settle in. This has created confusion for some (when I say some, I mean just me), in that it is now unclear exactly when we can begin to pick on a newbie.
We used to pounce on them immediately, if they survived they were considered initiated. With no immediate attack, how will we know when a newbie has been sufficiently acclimated to the environment of the board? Is it a certain number of posts? Is it when they pounce one of us that they become fair game? (If so, I object. If I show restraint, I would like fair warning before the attacks can begin)
Anyway, this is my question - When is a newbie no longer a newbie? Any thoughts?

Well, it depends.
I'd let their post count get up there as the main criterion. 25 or 50 posts should be considered experienced enough.
If responses are reasoned, well meaning and considerate, responses can be made (even disagreements or questions) if the thread deserves some response and no one is giving it any.
All bets are off however if they're a putz in reply. Boone beatings can then commence at that point.

But see, it's not so black and white Chance. If a newbie gets grace as a newbie, what is the criteria for "putz"? If your rule applies, then all newbies are in jeopardy immediately upon entering the threads, with no safety net. So, see, it's complicated.

I think a newbie will remain a newbie until they have proven themselves worthy. Some might accomplish that in a day while others a year and some, well some just won't ever make it. Plus I think there is a difference between a newbie on the boards and a newbie in the chat room.
The chat room is enter at your own risk and if you can handle the initiation then you can stay.

So, GS, what is the standard we judge by, and who are the judges?

Well, I think we can all pretty much recognize when someone is being snarky unreasonably or a putz. Basically, newbieness is a privilege and to go risking it by calling responders ass or you've no business in my thread or how dare you pretty much washes off any newbieness in my opinion.
Newbie is as newbie does in other words.
Oh, and before anyone else:
Newbie newbie new....
Exchanging theories
Newbie newbie new....
Raising their post count
Take it away boys!!!

we are always nice aren't we? And along w/ the newbie thing. Should there be an age limit for the chat room?

Good point GS - I guess we should define "Newbie" before we can say when someone is passed that stage.

we should come up with a newbie checklist for posting in the basement and entering the chat room.
Chat Room:
1) Never enter if you are weak or easily offended
2) Do not enter if you get frequent dizzy spells
3) Do not enter if you are going to ask silly questions and not offer any substance to the conversation (we like substance)
4) Do not come into the room and pick on people with out knowing who it is you are picking on
5) Upon entering the room please acknowledge everyone and let us know where you are from etc. Do not just come in and be quiet and sit in the corner.
Remember it's enter at your own risk!!
6) Oh and don't come in asking us questions about some show called LOST - we don't watch it.

How about a "You know you're a Newbie if...." thread?

Well, considering I chat mostly and hardly post, I don't mind newbies that much. They just have to be able to take sarcasm. We're trying to be better, some of us anyway, but our personalities will always come through.
Late night chat should have an age limit. Unfortunatley, late night for us in the east of the country begins only about 8:00 - 9:00 on the west coast. You have now been forewarned.
Always enter the chat room at your own risk.
I welcome newbies. And Wednesday is "Lost night". Occassionally we'll talk Lost other nights, but most of the time, be prepaired to enter a conversation that's not about Lost.

well, the most obvious way for a female newbie to gain acceptance is to post pics of herself scantily clad. i mean, it worked for futureidol--one panty pic and eveyone is dying for her to post...

perhaps when they dont feel the need to post panty pics to make friends

well then, maybe that is yet another definition for when they're not a newbie: they can find this thread and post about newbies.
Hmm... here I am. A newbie posting posting on a thread about newbies. Do I win a prize Chance?
eMz- if you're a girl, chance would be happy to give you a spanking as your prize.
and if you're a guy, i'm sure i'll be able to come up with something...rewarding.
Well, since I'm a girl, I guess I have a rousing spanking to look forward to.
