View Full Version : Sun as Persephone, if only briefly

This may actually belong in theories, if I had a theory about this, but the visual of Sun's abduction brings to the mind the abduction of Persephone but that bad deity Hades. With that abduction Autumn begins and Spring returns for all eternity. With this abduction Charlie becomes the little Hades that could, and Sun's little corner of paradise is forever tarnished. But she is right back in the mix with all the other LOST humans, and not off with the evil Others, in their fire pit. That's good at least.
Homer has a quote somewhere that Sun gets precious little in her character thread, so the idea of adding something motivated me to post here as well.

Tangent:
I like the pomegranite seed idea. And Demeter searching. That may be in the guise of Sun's family.
No, you didnt drown. Just be careful as to which boat you enter to row from shore to shore. If a particularly boney fellow requests a coin, select another ferrying company.
I think that this mythology moment is but a cameo allusion. Sadly I think that Sawyer (and Charlie) chose her because she presents as innocent (according to Homer, she's not so...am I right Homer?). I think if Sun were a more featured character (like Jack or Kate) the a full-blown theory would have made sense. I guess a case could be made for Jin as Hades???

Tangent, don't be shy! Come out and play!
Personally, and cynically, I think that it had to be Sun simply due to logistics: a) it had to be someone away enough from the rest of the group to be at least partially isolated, and b) it had to be someone Charlie could overpower physically, which limits the field considerably.
I love mythology but I honestly can't connect LOST to it except in the most superficial of ways... my loss, I know! :(

Thank you very much for the welcome! Although now boonian androphile has me very confused about ferry companies. I have done searches and I guess you mean I should avoid Styx and stones?
azteclady, I don't have a feel for mythology because I do not know the original stories, I just do searches, which is why I hesitate to join in.
Sun is my favourite character. I am very happy to see an Asian lady in the show and the suggestions of what she must do to maintain dignity and honour and her own courage. Jin forces her into many kinds of balancing acts. Is that Hades?
If she was picked as the weakest and most vulnerable makes me sad. I would like to see more of her in the stories and hope she won't always be a victim.:)
:rotfl: re Styx and Stones.
I love mythology. But I dont know everything about it. Many folks here know stories/facts that I dont and I learn from those cyber exchanges/readings.
I have always liked Sun. As for Jin as Hades, I meant that humorously. Although Jin's deteriorating position soul-wise left him a little like an underworld resident.
Sun can give Sawyer and Charlie that icy truthful stare that she gave Jack when he was preparing to amputate Boone's sorry leg. Also Sun should be able to figure out that her abduction was part of the con. Charlie may look at her a little too guiltily too often and spill it that way. Sawyer himself is not entirely invulnerable to scrutiny.
Besides her being slight let's say, and tending to be alone, her abduction would also engender a lot of understandable ire. She was the perfect choice.
Now Sawyer and Charlie can dance together in hell. Evil is so much fun.

Boonian,
It's so nice you started a thread, I wish you would do it more often.
Once again, I'm enjoying your humor and the imagery. Nice to see you made a new friend in here. Perhaps you can him/her out of the woodwork.
Thanks for the laughs.

I think that a case could be made for Sun as a Demeter/Persephone duality but I have spent all my major theory energy until Persephone herself walks in Haight-Ashbury with flowers in her hair. I like the character discussion areas. Can raise points and be flippant all in an instant.

Roh-oh, Tangent isan't going to be happy with me. Yes, I am one of the few Lost fans to consider Sun an evil character that TPTB are flying under the radar.
For example, Sawyer and Charley quite rightly are going to end up in hot water over Sun's injury in their scheme. Yet Sun gets no criticism for her scheme which resulted in the poisoning of Michael. A fact made worse by her leaving Kate take all of the heat for it. I've also mentioned on many occasions that her plan to ditch Jin at the airport would have resulted in Jin getting killed by her father.
They set her up as a sympathetic figure by making Jin appear to be such a bully, and she has gotten away with a lot of questionable behavior ever since.
Plus, I still say she was the one that got the key to give the gun to Shannon. She knew the key was to the gun case because they made a point of showing her lurking in the background eavesdropping when Kate was telling Jack what was in the case.
Since we need mythology in this thread, I vote she's Eris, the sneeky Goddess who set the events in motion that led to the beauty contest that resulted in the Trojan War.
She's Eeeeevil I tells ya, Eeeeeeevil.

Why not? If she's going to symbolize divinity at all, why not aim for the top?
Minimally let's have Sun figure out the conspiracy, and make demands at least on the lesser of the two fellows. Kate could collude with her though and kick in a vulnerable Sawyer moment as well. Now that Walt's away, Sun and Kate could actually poison the right person, whoever that might be. There are so many candidates.

Oh... I doubt it will go that route, but a mysterious poisoning of Sawyer would be a hoot. Everybody, except Jack and Sun, would have reason to suspect Kate since she is mad at Sawyer and they all think she poisoned Michael already. Jack might have to grudgingly take her side since he probably thinks he falsely accused her of Michael's murder. Sawyer would be pissed at Kate, Kate would end up suspicious of Sun...
Hehehe, much island zaniness could be drawn out of that scenario.

Time for vengence, sportsfans. As only the Gods can deliver. Jin may have given Sawyer that shunning glare, but Sun's response, I hope, will be more exacting in nature. Some little flavoring from the herb garden. Sprinkled in some soup. There is precedence. And Im sure that help is available from Athena herself (or which ever name fits her best).

So what do you think of Sun's baby sitting skills? She seemed freaked. Might play into your theory, here.

Sun was very freaked. Abandoned children of mythology end up rising to the top of human achievement and dare to defy the gods. The proper raising of children means that they will turn out normal and hopelessly unhappy.
At least Sun listened to Claire's argument as though she, Sun, didnt know everything---unlike another island resident.

If Sun ends up pregnant, she might be dragged to the drugged underworld. Is Ethan Hades?
boonian androphile

Ethan certainly dragged Claire to the underworld and filled her full of drugs and lies. If Sun is in fact pregnant then it is just a matter of time that she will become a target for mythologically based abduction. With Ethan (or at least one, two, three, or all four of them) now full of holes, who is next to step into those (two, or four, or six, or eight) shoes? Maybe CGZMcG will don another disguise, and will carry in his pocket a list of autographs: Steve (or is it Scott?); Shannon (stupid Collision); and of course the great man himself, whose autograph I would gladly buy from Charon if he would make an extra special UPS sort of river crossing. If Charon were to bring back the living man himself, I would slip into his bony fingers a couple of extra drachmas.

Is Hades bald?
Dont know really. Ruling the realm of the dead may impact upon skin pigmentation and hair as well. One thing for sure though, if Hades is the father, we have yet another paternal figure with anti-social traits, considering Hades had made Persephone his queen against her will.
