Is it true that 90% of all Canadians live within 50 miles of the U.S. border? If so, why?
Cause the further north you go, the colder and less fertile it gets. If they lived much further than 50 miles from the US border, those questions about polar bears wouldn't look so ridiculous.
Speaking of US-Canadian relations, I heard that Canada was considering declaring independence and establishing it's own government (except they are going to call it a "gouvernment"). Is that true?

But really what is the Canadian national sport?
Hockey, Curling or Lacrosse. Take your pick.
And how come Canada was a British colony but it doesn't have the Union Jack in the top left corner of its flag?
We actually did up until 1965 and then we created our own flag. The provincial flags of both Ontario and Manitoba still have the Union Jack in the top left corner. Also, little known fact, but we are still part of the British Commonwealth, that is why the Queen is still on our money.
Also is there an established/estimated date for canabis legalisation in Canada?
You are legally allowed to carry up to 15 grams of cannabis for your own personal use, provided it is not divided up. There is no "possession" charge in the legal books in Canada. Oh and British Columbia yeilds the best crops.

How outrageous is the Canadian Parliament? I hear they yell a lot.
Is there a plan underway to attack the South Park makers for depicting Canadians in such a physically uncomplimentary manner? Will Canada take its lead from the Middle East and burn and boycott or from the US and just invade? Of course the South Park Canadians did that so there is precedence.
If I travel in Western Canada (where Ive never been) what must I see?
Is the border between Canada and the US really necessary? I mean Americans run across the border at record rates as it is.
Are people outside of Ontario and Quebec really tired of the power monopoly there? Are O & Q the Jack and Locke of Canada?
When non-French speakers in the Parliament speak French are they reading tele-prompters?
Quand les Anglophones du Parlement parlent en francais, lisent-ils des machines?

Why yes they do yell a lot. But only at the Americans.
Is there a plan underway to attack the South Park makers for depicting Canadians in such a physically uncomplimentary manner? Will Canada take its lead from the Middle East and burn and boycott or from the US and just invade? Of course the South Park Canadians did that so there is precedence.
Actully we were quite flattered by the south park makers dipiction of us. At least they rememberd that we exist. Besides, we have to few people to invade, peacefull boycotting may happen. As long as no one has to go outside and March.
If I travel in Western Canada (where Ive never been) what must I see?
Vancover Island, kamaloops, Victorian, Vancover, Lake loise, Seatle (Ok, technically not Canada, but honerarly part of us)
Is the border between Canada and the US really necessary? I mean Americans run across the border at record rates as it is.
The border is a make work project to help the ecnomey, besides that it has no point. Thats why the never check your passports
Are people outside of Ontario and Quebec really tired of the power monopoly there? Are O & Q the Jack and Locke of Canada?
Lol, Actully now its more like Toronto's power monopley, and we are mocked sorley for all our misteps. Like the mayors wife, jean stealing habbit, and the fact that we had to call in the army after a snow storm.
When non-French speakers in the Parliament speak French are they reading tele-prompters?
Yes, and unbenowst to them, they are asking for fries with a side of ketchup
Quand les Anglophones du Parlement parlent en francais, lisent-ils des machines?
No, in order to have any power in quebec, one actully has to speack english, mostley because people in France don't consider what qubeckers speack, to be french.

Thanks for the compliment re French. A fantasy residential location of mine is either Quebec or France itself. Can the minister of Tourism do something about this?

Great idea for a thread Mystjade! It should definately clear up some misconceptions. I once had an American in the deep south ask if Canada had any paved roads yet (what a silly question... of course we don't).
A couple of comments...
Actully we were quite flattered by the south park makers dipiction of us. At least they rememberd that we exist. Besides, we have to few people to invade, peacefull boycotting may happen. As long as no one has to go outside and March.
I agree. I think our portrayal was very flattering. It actually made it seem like our military is a force to be reckoned with. Plus I have an uncle who's head detaches from his lower jaw and bounces up-and-down when he speaks, so I think the physical portrayal is accurate.
If I travel in Western Canada (where Ive never been) what must I see?
Vancover Island, kamaloops, Victorian, Vancover, Lake loise, Seatle (Ok, technically not Canada, but honerarly part of us)
I agree that Lake Louise and the rest of the Rockies are a MUST SEE for anyone. However, being one of the (apparently) 10% that grew up more than 50 miles from the US border, I would also recomend that you check out northern British Columbia as well (coastal mountains that extend to Alaska). The scenery is stunning. Plus, in my home-town, we have North America's largest Sitka spruce (at least until is was hit by lightning). Seeing it will change your life forever. ;)

A disagreement, unfortentley
I have been in Toronto a couple of times. What unique parts of it might I have missed?
The Bata Shoe museum is amazing, large and well stocked. Queen street, has an amazing collection of shops, and smaller local galleries. I love the Toronto Islands, Spadina House, Casa Loma (so many films have been shot there), also the ROM, and the Cermics meuseum across the street are quite good. Unfortentley both are undergoing renovations. The theater in toronto is also very good, as are the rotating shows/author talks at harborfront. If you come at christmas, don't miss the presentation of the Nutcracker. One of the local ghostwalking company's (muddy something) is increadbley good, and fairly historical, and evenhanded. Check out Eye weekley or the Toronto star, for most of the sesonal stuff. What have you seen?

LOL, unfortentley Quebecers don't like listining to anyone in any languge, inless the word soverignty is involved ;) . Actully if you request (as my brother has, that they contentue to speack in french, so that you can improve your abilties, ussuly they will be flattered, and honer your wishes. Also if you visit small town Qubec, English often won't be an option.

Tourism, is fairly big in the north, but not increadbley so. Ussuly school trips, dog sleding, and cruises.

NYC is a big draw, as is the Grand Canyon (never been), Las Vegas (never want to go), California, Florda (ok - Orlando), Vermont, and Cape Cod

That nasty seal clubbing controversy, is there a consensus in Canada regarding it, or is there disagreement?
I grew up in BC but have been going to grad-school in Newfoundland for the last 3-4 years so I just had to pounce on this question.
In general, most Canadians are probably not even aware that the seal hunt exists (bare in mind that Canada is huge, and that only a relatively small region actually participates in the hunt). I know that in Newfoundland, the general feeling is that the seal hunt is simply a flagship for animal rights groups to recruit celebrities to raise their profile and to secure funding so that they can pursue other interests. People are affected more by images of cute seals being killed (as opposed to chickens or cows), and are therefore more likely to pull out their wallets.
I'm assuming you watched the Paul McCartney Larry King Live episode last night. I don't think I've ever seen a debate that was more frustrating to watch. Both sides of the argument are so ridiculous I don't know who to side with.
I'm not for the seal-hunt (I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle of both extremes), but Paul and his wife spouted so much misinformation that I was actually cringing as I watched it. Their entire arguement hinged on their assertion that nobody eats seals -- a statment that simply isn't true. I'm also fairly certain that the killing of the white-coat pups has actually already been banned for quite some time (since the late 80's or early 90's I think). Furthermore, their statements regarding the "overfishing" situation were so off-track that I wouldn't even know where to begin. In response, premier Danny Williams was given so little time to actually respond that the whole thing wasn't really fair, but he needlessly squandered much of his opportunity by going on some tangent about environmental groups supporting terrorism (or something).
Personally, when I first came to Newfoundland I was surprised that there were still small communities where seal products were still used for food, clothing etc. And like anyone, I also think it's pretty difficult to watch the footage that was shown on Larry King last night. However, I'm also uncomfortable with pampered celebrities coming into an issue that they know very little about, and telling a group of people that they need to change their way of life.

Well all what you said is true, but in the last election the liberals lost seats to the conservatives and yes even le bloc quebecois lost some to the conservatives (damn conservatives :P ) But still le Bloc quebecois has more than 50% of the votes in Quebec. And if Le bloc quebecois is reelected in 2007 he will hold a referendum.
My own opinion is that the us are not a good exemple to follow so I'm a "quebecois separatist" (Because the Quebecois are socialist and the Canadians are now conservatives)
Why doesn't Canada ever participate in the wars? Are they wimps? Do they even have an army?
We have an army with USED submarines. (Call Canada if you want to sell your fixerupper subs)
And we don't fight in wars because we know that the enemy will actually fight us instead of getting afraid and bribing us with beer in order to make us go away. If we don't get our beer, we don't bother to fight. But we will come with our six packs and watch the missile light show.
I had an American ask me if he went to British Columbia if he had to exchange his money for British pounds.
I told him, well actually, when you get to the border you exchange all your money to the guy at the border and he gives you a nice bag of coloured beans. Have a nice day, EH!

Newfoundland is an incredible province that most Canadians completely overlook as a travel destination. I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to spend so much time here. The culture is completely unique, the people are unbelievably friendly, and the scenery is gorgeous.
If you ever come back here, you should definately try to explore the province a bit. The coastal communties have a cultural charm that is a lot of fun to experience. On the Northern Penninsula, Gros Morne National park is world-renowned for it's mountains, scenery, and camping/hiking opportunities. Cape St. Mary's (in the eastern part of the province) has North America's largest colony of breeding shorebirds -- there are literally hundreds of thousands of birds nesting in the cliffs and is a sight you will never forget.
It's definately a cool place to check out. Wow... I feel like I've just written a travel brochure.

I did not know the ins and outs of the seal question. However, you make a valid point regarding extremism and the use of all animals for various products. I eat meat so am not moved much by the politics of vegetarianism; however, unnecessary cruelty to animals offends me, and any out and out slaughter that shrinks animal population to the point of endangerment/extinction: whales; rhinos. Hunting is a fact of life. However, the filming of seal pups being creamed doesnt leave one in admiration of the process.
Once when I was in Canada, I dont recall the year, the govt called an immediate hault to Grand Banks Fishing. The fish populations had run quite low, perhaps from overfishing? Just an interesting event to experience while traveling. But fishermen were, I think, none too happy.
eta: One part of the tourist boat trips that I was keen on was the observation of sea birds nesting, flying, etc. We didnt get as close as I would have liked. But seeing birds flying and diving underwater was a grand experience.

Yes he has, and I am aware of that, and the long entagled history qubec, and france has had. I should have specified, that 1. the french people (not there goverment) genrally think that, and 2, it is mostley because of the diffrence in language. Boonean, you are correct as far as the statement goes. At the time of the last referundum (1995), a lot of company's left qubec, and that was one of the factors. 73 % of the respondents (the highest catigorical responce to any question) said they felt an economic association with Canada would be essential to the success of a sovereign Quebec - along with the Canadian dollar and passport. Which makes the act of seperation itself kind of futile

There has been a total ban on directed cod fishing for many, many years but the populations are simply not recovering. It is not known why this is the case, but it is probably due to the combined effects of several factors. The early lifestages of cod are incredibly delicate and even under ideal circumstances, the rate of population increase for this species may be so slow that it could take decades for the population to reach higher levels. Also, the cod populations that still exist migrate into international waters and are still harvested by fleets from some European countries. The whole issue is incredibly comlpex and cannot be easily attributed to one or two factors.

I had an American ask me if he went to British Columbia if he had to exchange his money for British pounds.
I told him, well actually, when you get to the border you exchange all your money to the guy at the border and he gives you a nice bag of coloured beans. Have a nice day, EH!
LOL - I actully had an american ask me (we were both in Italy) were I was from. I said Toronto. She said were?. I said Onterio. She said Were? I said Canada, she said "oh thats near Spain, right?' I smiled and nodded. Thats what you are supposed to do with the delusional, right? I also tried to order something from J. Crews catologe once, and they said they wouldn't ship to me. I asked why not? and they said they don't ship outside of North America
Newfoundland is an incredible province that most Canadians completely overlook as a travel destination. I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to spend so much time here. The culture is completely unique, the people are unbelievably friendly, and the scenery is gorgeous..
I should be going this summer, the rest of my faimly has already been and has had nothing but great things to say about it.

This thread has a lot of action. My head is spinning to keep up.
I used to have strong socialist politics but now not so much. But I would call myself generally left though. I am not fond the us govt either, but I did what I could, and I have more local challenges and/or successes to channel my energy.
Is Quebec separatism a good or a bad thing? Depends on who you are and what you want. If I lived there, I certainly would not vote for the conservatives.
I have been in Quebec City several times. I like the look of the town, and it is of a manageable size for both foot travel and French speaking. Made one attempt to drive all the way to the Quebec/Labrador border, but my friend and I quit at Tadussac. There was marine mammal life there so I was happy.

My head is spining too . . . who knew that a major bump would do this?
As for your discription of the snow leopord, it was beutiful.
I am a libral, but I do not agree with qubec seperating, mostley because most sepratist plans, include still reaping most of the benifts, attached to being Canadian. Also Libreals in genral do not encoroge the idea of Qubec seprtatisim. So a vote for the librals, would not be a vote for seperation, by any streach of the imagination.

True.
October 30, 1995 and the motion to pursue Quebec's independence was defeated by a small margin, 50.58% "No" to 49.42% "Yes".
It was the worst day of my life :)
