This is the discussion thread for the next LOST episode, "One Of Them"

Please post all your episode comments, mini-reviews, as well as simple questions ("What did so-and-so say?" "What did so-and-so see?" "What song played at this scene?") regarding the episode.

Any new theories or big issues raised by the episode may be started on a new thread.

Enjoy the episode!

Unlocking but, as usual, please keep all countdowns, timers, general squeeing, etc to the "Hype" thread. :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Episode Description:

Rousseau leads Sayid to a captive who may be one of the "Others," and Sawyer forces Hurley to help him track down an elusive island creature.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are just a few things that I'd like to mention in order to hopefully make everyones viewing of the Episode Discussion Threads a little more enjoyable:

* First off, if you haven't already, please take a moment and view the Welcome Forum (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2) as it is quite easy to get lost here. Many questions can be answered by simply taking a few moments and reading the Welcome Forum.

* Want to revisit a topic that's already been discussed (i.e. the P-word) with a new angle? Then please view the Guys? Where are we? (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4) forum where any and all topics are open for discussion.

* Have a theory that has possibly been mentioned before but you have a different twist on it? Then take a look at What I think is going on (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5).

* Both "Guys? Where are we?" and "What I think is going on" are where you can re-hash old ideas, concepts, and theories to your hearts content without worrying about your posts being merged or moved.

* If you have a question about how to add an avatar, a profile picture, a signature picture, or how to edit your location, please visit the LOST-TV Help Desk (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=48). You can most likely find the answer to your question there. If you cannot, then feel free to start a new post there about the problem you're having. The moderators, administrators, and web masters here keep a very close eye on that forum and your question will not go unanswered for long.

* If you have a question how to find past episodes of LOST, please take a look at the Miss an Episode? (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6657) thread.

* If you have a question about what so-and-so may have said in a past episode, please take a moment and look through the transcripts (http://lost-tv.com/transcripts/index.html) of past episodes. Our very own spooky puts a great deal of time into creating these for us and she's rarely, if ever, wrong in her transcription.

* If you have a website related to LOST that you'd like to mention for everyone to check out, please post it in the Advertise your LOST site/RPG here! (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11578) thread.

* If you're looking to see if something has been posted here before related to LOST, please take a moment and perform a Search (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/search.php) of the forums. That link will allow you to search the entire forum in the event that you may not know where something has been mentioned or is currently being discussed. Those of you who have been with us since before we moved to our current location probably know that the Search function at our old home didn't work very well, if at all. However, the Search function here is very thorough so please utilize it.

* If someone uses a word, acronym, or slang that you're unfamiliar with, please check the LOST-TV Dictionary (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10085&highlight=dictionary) before asking what something like TPTB means.

* If you're having a problem unrelated to LOST and need help from the moderators and/or administrators, feel free to PM any of us. We'll be glad to help you out. You can find a list of the mods/admins here (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showgroups.php) as well as at the bottom of the thread listings for each individual forum.

I simply added these links in order to keep non-episode related material out of the Episode Discussion threads. Material that is non-episode related clutters the Episode Discussion thread and makes it difficult to navigate for many.

Thank you all for your time.

Weren't the symbols the signs of dharma. The arrow, swan, etc...

Actually not... after rewinding tivo there is a rectangle with a skinny obelisk shape kind of looks like a rocket, definitely a bird heiroglyphic, a diagonal line with two tails, kind of looks like a y, the last one I could see just looked like a piece of string shaped in an upside U with one side longer than the other.

Yep. Now I remember. Why did Minnesota stick in my head? Does he perhaps say something about being from Minnesota? Either as Professor Marvel or as the wizard? Hmmm..

I think Locke hit execute before the final digit in the counter stopped spinning.

Also, that scene of Sayid standing on the side of the road after the military guys drop him off, it looked so CGI'd.

Major PROPS to Sayid for calling Locke and Jack (and everybody else) on forgetting what happened to Claire and Charlie.

BOO to CTV for no previews again.

ETA: I thought the same thing: Was that a picture of Kate? Was that even Kate's dad holding the photo?

I didn't get why Sawyer called Hurley 'Re-Run'. And can someone explain their thoughts on the whole frog thing. It reminded me of the wild boar that was goating him in S1. S2E14: "One of Them"

BIG QUESTIONS:
Who is Henry Gale/Gail?
What are the red hieroglyphics on the counter?
Why did the clock reset?
What happened to Sayid after he was left in the desert?
Are we ever going to see Michael and Walt again?
Why didn’t Sayid ask Danielle more questions about Henry?
Where did Danielle go?

MORE THAN COINCIDENCE?
Kate’s dad interrogating Sayid!

SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF:
Jack being able to wrestle Sayid away from Henry Gale.
Ana staying behind instead of following Sayid into the jungle after Rousseau.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
Why Sayid became proficient in torture.
Why Hurley isn’t losing weight.

MUST GOOGLE:
ADF beacon transmitter
non-metallic minerals

LOCATIONS FOR THE LOST MAP:
Ramadi, Iraq

NUMBERS:
“Charlie 46” spoken over military compound loudspeaker
ranch dressing shelf life-7 years
balloon crashed 4 months ago
2 days’ walk to the Gales’ cave
Jennifer Gale delirious for 2 days
Sayid was 23 when he was interrogated
Sayid was a torturer for 6 years
Hurley was 10 when his turtle went missing
balloon 110’ high and 60’ wide

CHARACTERS:

Jack: At first I wondered why he wasn’t the least bit suspicious of Henry. But it made sense when he told Sayid that Danielle thought he was an Other too. Jack does a pretty good job of presenting the logic most of the time.

Kate: WHOA, a completely Kate-less episode!

Sawyer: So did anyone else think Sawyer was going to keep the tree frog as a pet? He is REALLY up to his old, no-good despicable ways. Poor little frog! :(

Sayid: FINALLY, NAVEEN GETS SOME LINES!!!!!! And of course, Sayid is the only one who REALLY makes sense. It’s as if everyone else HAS forgotten about Claire’s kidnapping and Charlie’s hanging. I think Sayid knows Charlie helped Sawyer get the guns, and that is why he had this conversation--to get Charlie to reveal the whereabouts of the guns. I don’t think the battle is going to be between Jack & Locke at all; I think it’s going to be Sayid vs. anyone else who doesn’t agree with him.

Locke: Something is amiss with Locke. He seems like a disturbed man instead of the enlightened sage he once appeared to be.

Charlie: He’s already killed someone with no regrets; he could sign up for Sayid’s army.

Claire: Next week’s previews!

Hurley: Man, I do NOT like anyone mistreating Hurley. Sawyer loses big points tonight.

Animals:Tree frog.

Favorite Lines:
Jack to Sayid: Did you shoot him? Sayid: Do I have a bow? ROFL!

Literary/pop references:
Smiley face on the Gales’ balloon

Seriously Creepy:
The military torture box and Sayid’s bloody hands.
Sawyer and the tree frog.

Music:
There were a few of those intense string glissandos--sliding your finger down a string while using the full bow across it. Very creepy and effective in the torture scenes, oh my!

Summary:
Exceptional performance from Naveen tonight! For heaven’s sake, TPTB, will you please come to your senses and give us more Sayid now?

what i gathered:

-danielle supposedly captured "gale" and gave him to sayid (don't know if danielle is an other yet... now that preview...)
-locke is ok with torture, jack is still on moral highground
-the clock counts past zero and starts a symbol countdown (or what happens at 0 already happened)
-"gale" gives a sly look when jack rescues him
-sayid was captured by kate's dad's unit during desert storm. he became a torturer through torturing his fellow soldier

Just a couple of notes on what I've read here so far...

1. For those who say “nothing happened” when the clock struck zero and the numbers turned to symbols…don’t be so sure that “nothing happened” – I believe something did happen…we just don’t know what yet. Those symbols meant something happened. Perhaps another incident has begun?

2. Yes, Henry Gale is Dorothy's uncle from Wizard of Oz. Henry Gale also plays the Emerald City Guard. Since the Wizard came to Oz in a hot air balloon...the munchkins tell Dorothy that the only one who can help her get back HOME is the Wizard of Oz. Interesting to bring up the subject of "how to get back home" when you are lost.

Interesting theory regarding Gale. I thought it was important when Sayid questioned him about the radio beacon on the balloon. If Gale is telling the truth, I have a feeling there might be a trek to that portion of the island in the near future.

In his first flashback he had been promoted to a torturer from his position as a Communnications Officer, now it turns out he was a Baathist Do-Gooder who got tricked into it by the Eeeeeevil CIA (or whatever that goober was). Way to be groundbreaking Hollywood -- we never would have imagined that story line out of you. :rolleyez: Hey! I know -- maybe you can add some Eeeevil business men funding research by Eeeeeevil scientists into the ultimate killing machine. I swear, we wouldn't see that coming from a mile!

Plus the whole Sawyer chasing a tree frog side story seemed like it could have used a little work... like tossing the whole thing out and replacing it with something mildy interesting.

The hatch scene was pretty good. Much bubbling testosterone. I wonder if they screw up and let the Other get loose? They should put a ladder up by the counter and see if they can flip the cards back to take a look at the symbols.

Even Crazy Danielle was even duller than usual, and I'm found of her loony ways. Also, by now it is getting more than a little bit unbelievable that the cracker-jack interogator Sayid keeps forgeting to ask Danielle any questions. Seesh, what a pack of morons.

I think an incident almost began, but Locke stopped it. I think once this weird symbols were all displayed then something bad would have happened, but Locke was quick enough. The symbols seem to correspond with Egyptian Hieroglyphs depicting certain things...but I need to see that again to determine what they are.

I saw one that looked like a crow, and another that looked like a ribbon. I did some digging, and found out that these translate to "arrow":

http://hieroglyphs.net/0301/images/d/47.gif

Perhaps it displays the logos for the other stations, and when the countdown is finished members of the other stations have to respond to prevent something from happening? Kind of like a missile launch code...

The seriously creepy look Gale gave when Jack pulled Sayid off him said it all. He definately is an Other. Ethan said he was from Canada; Minnesota isn't that far off... Maybe something about frozen hell?

I don't think Henry Gale is an "Other" - there is something else about him...not sure what it is...I need to think about it more. However, with that said, I'm not sure he is telling an ounce of truth with his story...but, for some reason, I just don't think he is an "Other." He is something else.

He let the boar go, but killed the frog. I don't know if I'm trying to read too much into it, but it was all there for a reason. What is it?

Ok, slowing it down, I don't know a lick about heiroglyphics, but here is what I see. the first number (which is definitely the last one that stopped spinning) appeared to in the form of, well can't say paperclip cause it wasn't smooth and didn't go around enough times, but close to that.

The second symbol never stopped spinning, but while it spun looked like a stick figure slide show almost

third symbol looked kind of like fire, like a flat lighter, or bunsin burner, shooting up a small flame

the 4th symbol was a bird, can't tell what king, but it was grounded not flying, and while it spun it looked like a stick figure, exactly like the second symbol.

the last symbol was a line that looked like a fork in the road, kind of like a y

anyway, they don't mean anything to me

I searched ADI beacon and this is a little weird they have a headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan exactly where the University of Michigan is. What is it with Dharma and Michigan connections.

Applied Dynamics International is a supplier of advanced embedded hardware and software tools for the aviation, aerospace, automotive, defence, electronics and other related industries. In addition to its Michigan headquarters, ADI has an international office in the United Kingdom and installations in 23 countries and representatives throughout the world.

Ann Arbor, Michigan - Applied Dynamics International, Inc. (ADI) today announced that British Aerospace Military Aircraft and Aerostructures (BAe) will use ADI's BEACON software tool to design the General Systems Utility Systems Management System (USMS) software on the NIMROD MRA4. BAe will upgrade the Royal Air Force's (RAF) current fleet of 21 NIMROD MR Mk2 maritime patrol aircraft to NIMROD MRA4 standards.

ADI's BEACON tool set uses its own graphical programming language specifically designed for embedded software controls. Every embedded software task is covered – from signal management to control laws – using the native BEACON signal flow block palettes. Critical algorithmic decision-making can be embodied in BEACON's control flow diagrams, using the clear and concise language of standard flowcharts to specify your program's requirements and design.

It was an ADF Beacon, not an ADI. Here's a link to more info:

Small tidbit - if the symbols are being used phonetically and not semantically, we get to fill in the vowels ourselves. It would take someone with better knowledge than my linguistics book.

Even if the CIA agent spoke Arabic, do you think the Republican Guardsman would have said anything to him? The agent probably knew he stood a better chance of getting him to talk by using an Iraqi...

OR...

The agent knew the helicopter pilot was already dead, and he wanted an Iraqi to torture another Iraqi... thus the blood wouldn't be on his hands.

This figure of a man in the first tile is a determinative used with phrases that are meant to be communicated -- you see it placed on words that are meant to be spoken, thought, or felt empathetically. Should it be interpreted with the statement that we're working on figuring out? Who knows, but I'd say yeah considering how sneaky the writers tend to be...

Wow. Quite an episode.

First off, I didn't recognize Kate's dad, but I did recognize her in the pic, and to me...it didn't look like a little girl. I could easily recognize that it was Kate...so I thought she looked older in the pic.

Sawyer and Hurley: Was that whole frog quest just to fill up the other part of the hour? Because it didn't seem like there was much of a point to it. Poor Hurley...I think I am more mad at Sawyer for taking stabs at Hurley, rather than being so mad at him for killing the frog. Poor frog, but I felt really bad for Hurley.

Henry Gale: I didn't even catch that whole Wizard of Oz connection. Nice catch! At first I thought he was being sincere, but then when Sayid pointed out how he would remember if he had to bury someone he loved...my thoughts changed. And whoa...what was with that seriously creepy look he gave Sayid right after Jack pulled Sayid off of him?!! That was definitely not a scared look, it looked more like a smirk to me.

Locke: That is interesting that Locke was okay with the idea of torturing..and helped Sayid with the whole thing. I can't decide if the red symbols were a red warning sign saying...your time is up...too late now, something has happened...or if those last few seconds of the symbols appearing where a sort of "grace" period...to give them a little more time. And that is why nothing happened, because Locke hit execute before they completely stopped popping up.

Jack: Is really getting on my nerves...I was mad when he was giving Locke the ultimatum with the combo and the counter. He is a softie, doesn't want Sayid to torture Henry...but how quickly he did indeed forget what the "others" did to Charlie and Claire...just like Sayid said. How quickly they all forgot.

Sayid: Now we know how he got into the torturing business. And he said he would never do that again...well, I guess he decided that he did need to use it again. It really bugs me that he didn't ask Danielle more questions though. He was defintely taking his anger out on Henry, and I am pretty sure that he saw the weird look Henry gave him, which makes his suspicions even more confirmed that Henry is "one of them."

Danielle: Why would she go and get Sayid to come to Henry, and then just leave? If he is "an other"...why wouldn't she want to stick around and find out if he knows where Alex is? Or try to make him tell her himself? That was weird that she didn't stick around.

Those symbols were so weird. When I first saw them, I was like..."WHOA!!!" I can't wait until we can figure out what they say. I wonder if any of the letters could be linked to Alvar Hanso.

Overall, nice episode! And those previews looked really good. I can't wait. :D

Thanks Max! If I'm not interpreting you wrong, the last symbol is similar to a punctuation mark? (In this case something like an evil exclamation point? lol)

The last symbol, the determinant, gives you a "context" to interpret a written statement that could be translated a number of different ways. For example, think about how the word "store" has several different meanings in English. If I needed you to understand what I meant just by seeing that one word, I could draw a little Walmart next to it if I wanted you to know I meant "store" as in a place to shop, versus "store" as the action of putting something away.

True, but the vast majority of the time you can easily figure the direction. The rule of thumb is to read into the face of any animate hieroglyph, like a human, jackal, bird, etc. In this case, we have a vulture facing left, so we read into its face, left to right.

As I noted in my earlier post. I see no symbols that look chinese either. Even the last symbol is in there and its tilted just like we see it in the show. In order they are s29 u29 g1 z6

Also to note that upon further review you can clearly see another hieroglyph of a man with his right arm to his head. The best shot of it is right as the numbers are resetting themselves after lock as reentered the code. Its quick but its clear as day. This symbol is identical to A2 on that table. Barbar = the elephant. Some kids books about an elephant. I loved those books. They were great. :D

And why would that guy pay Sayid for what he did for them? I would think that letting him go free would be payment enough.

Jack's short reply of "Shut up" to Locke was kind of annoying. Get with it Jack...you aren't the king of the island.

My thoughts on Locke keep changing. I liked him a lot before, then when he started picking on Charlie, I liked him less. In these last two episodes, he is more likable again. I can't figure him out. He is changing how he acts all the time. What is going on with him?

Henry Gale - I am not as good at picking out background stuff as you guys are, but I could have sworn that when then were picking him up to put him into the armory, there was a picture on the wall. It was at an angle, and perhaps I just wanted it to be so, but it looked like a painting of a field and a hot air balloon. I don't know how to do a screen cap - but I can take a picture of my TV on that frame tomorrow and post it (unless I am tarred & feathered and deemed a crack smoker for thinking I saw such a thing). He didn't say who he was until he could have seen that painting.

They really need Grissom to land on the island to catch all of these literary references. He would've pegged Henry Gale from the start.

Secondly - in the last few episodes I've gotten the sense that people are forgetting things. Not major things - but little annoying things, like when Libby mentioned to Hurley about seeing him on the flight, and he said, "what flight?" Hurley was the one seemingly the most forgetful, without it being made a big deal. Then with Sayid asking Charlie if he was forgetting - makes me wonder if "forgetting" is part of the sickness, or effect of the island (have the Others forgotten who they are and how they got there?). I don't know - it just seemed odd for the show to end on that note, when I've been getting the sense that they are becoming forgetful in the last few weeks.

I liked it lots but hey, I'm easy when it comes to Lost.

Worst part: Hurley's food stash. Tacky & cheap writing. They wanted to show us again how Sawyer's regressed but we got that already. They wanted to work in a tree frog reference, ok, we got it and we all googled tree frogs and found out medicine is made from their skin secretions. Big hooha. We don't know how said substance (Caerulein, btw) will tie in but lots of folks will be adding dull links to their T&S theories.
Even if something happens to Sawyer's hand after smushing Kermit, they could have found a better way to lead him to doing it.

Best parts: Danielle, Danielle, Danielle. Wizard of Oz refs. My man Sayid. I like saying "my man Sayid" because before tonight I never understood what his fans and Barbara see in him, it's a new thing for me to like him so much. Great creepy torture scenes and music. And Charlie! Who'd have thunk I'd ever be a Charlie and Sayid fan??!!

Best or Worst, I don't know: Locke napping midday on the bunk. Great dork thing.

Chinamom, was that you that wrote suspension of belief doesn't cut it re Jack pulling Sawyer off Henry? Amen, sister.
Btw, I KNOW Henry was lying because his wife's name was Alice or Gertrude or Auntie Em but I just don't see him with a Jennifer.

I liked this episode. A lot. Except for Sawyer squishing the frog! I was at least hoping he would crush it with his foot, but in his hand...that is just so wrong. And dropping it in Hurley's hand was even worse. There was no call for that. I think the whole point of the "frog quest" was to show Sawyer is pretty heartless and cruel now.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Jack who gave the okay for Sayid to torture Sawyer back in season one. So why is torture suddenly so squeamish/wrong for him? Because he's a doctor and the guy was injured? Please. Something is weird with that. He was so willing to torture Sawyer over something not as important as maybe having an "Other" in their hands.

I'm also wondering when they are going to give us something about Michael or Walt.

Danielle's strange...though I have to say, being alone on an island with a bunch of killers and kidnappers for 16 years would do that to you. But I, too, don't understand why she wouldn't want to stick around and hear the anwers Sayid was supposed to get from "Henry."

I definitely agree that "Henry" is evil. That look on the end...cold shivers.

I love Sayid's line of "do I look like I have a bow?" I think it was my only laugh out loud moment this episode.

The symbols on the number counter I think work as a buffer, a safety net so to speak in case the others (beeping, etc.) don't give sufficient warning.

NICE catch, Shiv, on the Henry Gale reference. Are the writers borrowing from pop culture, or is it more?

I was glad to see that Charlie isn't being isolated and ignored by everyone. Though I did find it ironic Sayid asked him if he had forgotten the others' incidents when Charlie was just pretending to be one.

ACTUALLY, I thought after Sayid's confession, Charlie would confess to Sayid. That would have set up an interesting situation.

For a minute I thought maybe it was poisonous and would affect him somehow, then got to wondering whether he was going to keep it. But after everything else he has done, this really is the first thing that put me off his character.

I agree, there is a mention of Minnesota in Wizard of Oz. Could swear that is where the Wiz says he is originally from, or where he was a professor before starting his ballooning. .

Also, yes, I think they did leave the pliers in the armory with "Uncle Henry". Hmmm, could be interesting. Of course he will escape, because we couldn't possibly be given answers this early! lol

Henry is definitely a phoney. He said he became rich by selling his company in Minnesota. What did the company do? It Mined non-metallic minerals. What non-metallic minerals are mined in Minnesota? Abrasives, like for sand-paper, as a matter of fact. Sound familiar? Like Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing? Henry made a fortune selling 3M? i hardly think so! Jennifer Murphy (his wife) is a senior chemist at 3M, BTW. Google Henry Gale and you come up with a physicist at University of Michigan, as well as the Wizard of Oz. His description of his hot air balloon sounds exactly like the one that Per Linstrund and Richard Branson used to cross the Pacific in 1991. His 'ADF radio Beacon' similarly is baloney. ADF stand for Automatic Direction Finder. It's basically an instrument used in OLD aircraft to home in on a radio transmission. It's the thing in the airplane that searches for the signal, NOT the thing on the ground that SENDS the signal (!). The thing on the ground is called an ELT (Emergency Locating Transmitter) and he for crissakes should have KNOWN that. Oh, and by the way he wasn't wearing a wedding ring. Perhaps it fell off while he was burying his wife.

Did anyone else check out the text at the bottom of the videotape? I did, and here's what I was able to get:

Something to the effect of "Property of DIA" followed by "Reel 23108-42"

OK, the numbers are easy. 23 and 42 and 108. We all know what those are.

It occurred to me that "DIA" was a strange acronym to be on a military tape, because if it's military, it's government property, and government acronyms usually have Os in the middle of them. It's usually D.O.something, as in Department Of something.

So I believe the D and the I stand for "Dharma Initiative," but I can't think of what the A could stand for.

I also have to give myself a pat on the back for recognizing Kate's step-dad before he was identified. When he was sitting in the room with Sayid, trying to get him to interrogate that other Iraqi, I asked my wife, "Who was the guy in the military? Was it Kate's step-father? That guy kind of looks like him, doesn't he?"

Also, I'm sure I've seen that guy who claims his name is Henry Gale, but I can't for the life of me remember where. To the best of my recollection, he was either in the police station with Boone and Sawyer, or he was seen in one of the pictures they've shown, or SOMEPLACE. I'm virtually certain I've seen that face before, probably in Season 1. Time to get out the Season 1 DVDs.

Was it just me, or was there a pause when Mr. Gale was asked about his wife's sickness? I'm sure that the man is not who he says he is, but I wonder what the point was about the sickness?

I mean, let's say he was one of the others. Why didn't he just say that HE was the one in the balloon? Why add another fake person? He didn't need to.

I'm wondering if maybe he was wanting to tell Sayid about the sickness. Although that doesn't explain the pause. I just don't know what to think about it. Did anyone else notice it? Or I'm just looking too much into nothing?

Wow. I mean. Wow. This episode started off slow and then just took off. I mean, it's leading up into a really fantastic and fascinating direction. Thanks, Radiohead, for finding the link to the hyroglyph thread. I recognized the symbols and couldn't place them immediately...

I believe Henry Gale is totally an Other. Any ideas on an acronym for his name???

And btw, wasn't the Dharma Iniative from the UNIVERSITY of MINNESOTA??

Did Sayid ever see the tape? Would he make that connection???

 I can't WAIT for next week!

The more I try to immerse myself in the world of LOST, the more it tries to discourage me.

The 8 pages of netspeak chit-chat that goes on during the show is some of the most banal stuff I've ever seen spewed on the internet and I've been around.

I just recently got into podcasts and find out The Transmission went tits up. So I check out a couple of Official ABC podcasts with Lindelof and Cuse. They sound like a couple of arrogant kids who are smugly sitting on a secret that they think will change the world. Something about the tone of their voices makes me think they're winging it.

Maybe I'm in a bad mood, so take me with a grain of salt.

This episode was like visiting a prostitute who won't let you finish.

There were a few good moments: That very last look by the Other to Sayid as the door was being shut. There was a glimpse of 'gotcha,' of silent knowledge and understanding.

When Sayid introduced himself to the Other, he dropped his voice a little bit. It was a good bit of voice work by Naveen Andrews.

If there was other good stuff in this episode, please let me know. The CGI backdrops of the Kuwaiti desert were distracting, but that's for nitpickers. At least Clancy Brown was decent, I've always liked him as an actor.

I'm guessing he blurted it out because he got shot through the arm with an arrow and was locked in a room with a torturer. He was trying to think of a lie fast. Besides, I think he would have messed up his story even more if he said he went alone. People don't fly across the Pacific by themselves.

He probably added his dead wife so people would have sympathy for him.

I, for one, would love to see a pic of this.

Henry Gale is Dorothy's uncle from Wizard of Oz. The professor (the wizard) came to Oz in a hot air balloon. I believe he claimed to be from Minnesota. This guy is completely full of crap.

HOLY EFFIN MYLANTA! Savid, what an Amazing catch! That flew by me!

Totally proves he is an OTHER, though I knew it anyway. Wow.

Just, wow. :Cowdance:

For those who say “nothing happened” when the clock struck zero and the numbers turned to symbols…don’t be so sure that “nothing happened” – I believe something did happen…we just don’t know what yet. Those symbols meant something happened. Perhaps another incident has begun?
Something DID happen! Didn't you all hear all those clanking and whirring noises, sounding like heavy metal machinery in motion? To me, it sounded like huge metal doors were about to slam shut, sealing them all in! (And keeping everything else out.) Maybe to keep everyone else out if something was to happen to the original occupants, to keep the hatch secret?

I didn't notice any physical resemblance, and the listed actors are different (according to earlier posts on this thread). But their voices sounded very similar to me! It probably was just their accents sounding alike to me.

The seriously creepy look Gale gave when Jack pulled Sayid off him said it all. He definately is an Other. Ethan said he was from Canada; Minnesota isn't that far off... Maybe something about frozen hell?
From someone who lives in frozen hell - you may have something there! LOL
I'm pretty sure the Wizard of Oz took off from Nebraska, but I can't say there wasn't a reference to Minnesota in the book/movie. I'm sure someone here will be bored enough to look it up eventually.

If Henry really is an other, remember that the others seem to know everything about those stranded on the island. Therefore he would already know about the relationship between Sayid and Shannon and her demise. He may have been using the story about his wife to try to get on Sayid's "good side"....remember how quickly he jumped on it when he sensed that Sayid had a loss too. Seemed all too eager to find some sort of comraderie there.

Probably not worth the bother in this thread, but I'll give it a try:

OZ, as in Wizard of, is a widely-used buzzword for Australia.
Yanks and Aussies both use it.

I don't know. I've heard of attempted treks like that so it wouldn't surprise me in the least. You have a good point though about the lie thing. The others know that our folks have heard about the sickness, don't they? If so, it would lend him some credibility... or so he might think.

However, what I was thinking to begin with was that the others might be trying to instill fear in them about the sickness OR find out if any of them are sick. Haven't they asked? I can't seem remember right off hand.

Goodness. This show just boggles my brain! :)

I'm not talking about the mural - there is a framed painting on the wall opposite the weight bench.

Here's a sucky picture I took of my TV paused at the point I mean (and a bonus picture of Jack's big butt).

Someone who can do screencaps will have to find a better image, if this means anything - presumably just Mr. Gale is lying, he's a Wizard of Oz fan, and knows (or knows how to lie) about the workings of a hot air balloon.
It is hard to tell if that framed pic is a hot air balloon or not (is that the yellow brick road leading up to it haa haa)... atleast from your pic. Maybe someone will post a screencap. If it is true, I'm most impressed! How the hell did you catch that? I almost want it to be true ...... it would remind me of the scene from The Usual Suspects where Kevin Spacey's character makes up his whole story by using objects in the room (in this case, it would be a picture of the hot air balloon) to get away.

Oh yeah. Well there is a definite correlation to that. It's just odd though because he clearly IS NOT who he says he is. So why mention the sickness? That's what I'm so obsessive about. :p

That is a great point! He keyed in on Sayid losing someone too. Although, Sayid was pretty much putting it in his face, but still....

It just still seems odd to me. If he was lying, he'd know they'd want to see her body. Of course, if they killed a woman in the recent past, he could produce one. Otherwise, Sayid could call him on it.
