View Full Version : The Local Color Thread

Mr. Cluck
02-28-06, 02:42 AM
The idea for this thread came from the early discussions in the Fast Food Thread (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15397). Basically, share what is local to your area with the others in here and compare what your area has and what it doesn't.

For example:
Philly/South Jersey - Tastykakes, cheesesteaks, ACME, Checkers, Wawa.
We drink soda - not tonic or pop.
We eat hoagies - not subs or heros.

Those are places local to the area. Do you have any in your area? This is the place to post.

Knoville, TN - I've never been a southern-food type eater (parents both from Yankee territory) and I don't think there's anything particularly unique about NorthEast Tennessee food, except the roadkill stuff that ILLB already mentioned.

However, Mayfield's ice cream is as good or better than Ben and Jerry's or Lady Godiva's, and is a hell-uv-a-lot cheaper!

Paris, France. We have arguably some of the greatest restaurants gastronomiques in the world, which I, of course, can't afford.
Just to name a few:
L'Ambroisie
L'Arpège
Le Grand Vefour
Lucas Carton
Le Doyen

I will probably never eat at any of these places, unless I win the lottery. The average price for the chef's menu du jour in one of these establishments is around 250€ ($300) per person, and reservations must be made months, sometimes over a year, in advance.

There are, however, many, many great, affordable restaurants in Paris, and as it is a cosmopolitan capitol, one can find just about any type of ethnic cuisine.

South Florida -

Although I personally can't eat them (don't eat sandwiches), the big things down here are grouper sandwiches and Cuban Sandwiches:

The traditional Cuban sandwich is made with Cuban bread. The bread is cut in half and buttered on both sides. Dill pickles, roast pork, ham, and Swiss cheese are added in layers. The pork is an essential ingredient and it needs to be slow roasted with Cuban spices, giving the pork a distinct garlic and citrus flavor. The sandwich is then lightly toasted in a sandwich press called a "plancha" until the bread is crisp and the cheese is melted. The press both heats and compresses the sandwich. A traditional Cuban sandwich can include mustard, but never mayonnaise, lettuce, or tomato.

Sushi in our groceries stores (which may or may not be a local thing. I live in NC and have fresh fish all the time.)
BBQ (all kinds, any flavor. Downhome better than anywhere else, period)
No "pop" or "soda" or whatever. We call it what it is....would you like a Coke. A Dr. Pepper. etc.
A sub is a sub, not a hoagie.
Tea-we have sweet tea which is exactly what it sounds like, sweeten tea. Iced tea can be both, but means tea with ice.
Harris Teeter, Food Lion, and Whole Foods are our grocery stores.
The deep dish pizza here is by far the worst pizza and a misnomer. Deep dish pizza is really about a half an inch thick. Why it is called Deep dish here is beyond me.

I'm in Western North Carolina, where are you, juanbong? Anyway, Ingle's, Bi-Lo and Food Lion are our main grocery stores. We call any soft drink by it's name, and most restaurants only serve products from Coke family, or Pepsi family so you have to ask when you order a drink,"do you have Coke or Pepsi?" Then you know which line of drinks you can order from. However, Pepsi was born in the Carolinas!!

We have tons of fresh vegetables here, our very own Farmer's Market where you can get almost anything.

A sub is anything on a long bun, except for a hot dog, which is just a hot dog. BBQ is good here and it should come with cold slaw on it and mayo.

Potato salad is a big picnic side dish, can't have fried chicken and baked beans without potato salad. And our baked beans are just beans with lots of brown sugar to make them sweet.

We also have a growing poplulation of hippies, who love all the organic stuff, but true country folk here aren't into that.

Sweet tea is the only tea to drink.....the sweeter the better!

Don't call it "Frisco"! SF, San Fran, OK. Or "the city" even though the Bay Area has two larger cities.

Very few born n raised types here, and it is a big small town, less than 3/4 of a million people in a 7x7 mile city. Before the dot com explosion, everyone chose their residence by what they like / what they are like. So while someone from NYC usually asks about your job, and someone from my hometown of New Orleans asks where you like to eat, someone from SF might ask where you live. We had a neighborhood for everything and preserving neighborhood character is paramount. Some areas even have laws where a chain store must have a public hearing in order to open.

Plus we have sourdough bread and Anchor beer.

If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flower...a sweater! You know the quote, often attributed to Mark Twain? "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco." Dress in layers, and remember wearing shorts marks one as a bridge n tunnel or tourist, unless you are on a bike! We have excellent bike routes, zillions of bike commuters, and rental facilities if you are visiting.

We have Interesting People and many many cultures, including Chinese, Japanese, Latino and a large swatch of Irish, Russian and Italian. Often the guy with the piercings isn't as interesting as the guy in the business suit. We love coffee more than even Seattle, and have cafés everywhere, a center of neighborhood culture. Once a French guy asked my pal David "Is 2 PM too late to eat breakfast?" to which David replied with the quotable, "New York may be the city that never sleeps, but San Francisco is the city that never wakes up."

We follow local politics like most people follow sports, but I will leave the details on that one out!

And we have astronomical home prices as well as rents. Median home price is over 800K for a single family home, and rent is about $1600 for a one bedroom. Then again, minimum wage is $8.50 an hour, even for waiters.

We have excellent foods of all types, music venues for any preference and artists galore. ETA: and lots of bookstores! as well as the largest independent record store in the US, located in a former bowling alley on Haight.

Born and raised in Baltimore City, here. Could see the buildings in downtown from my front porch growing up. Could even see the cranes at the shipyards..... and on a good night, the Domino's sugar sign.

This is one habit that I CAN NOT break - no matter how hard I try. I've compensated by saying "honey" - but it still breaks through occasionally.

oh - and don't forget that oysters are "urshters" and Maryland is "Mer-lind" and Baltimore is "Bal-mer". And we don't go to the beach - we go "Down-y ocean, hon". And the zoo at Druid Hill Park is "Droodle park".

I miss home. :(

Baltimore, Maryland here.
or Bawl-mer as it's called locally. We eat Maryland blue crabs from the Chesapeake Bay. Roy's Kwik Korner even carries a baseball crab cake. About the size of a regulation baseball, minus the "108" stiches
The local beer is National Bohemian "Natty Boh!" It's comparable to PBR or Milwaukee's Best. In other words, NOT GOOD!
We love our sports teams. The Orioles, Ravens, Blast, Maryland Terrapins.
I live about 5 minutes from downtown.
Fells Point is the place to hang out or Pub Crawl.
The Inner Harbor is one of the more beautiful attractions on the East Coast. We have Fuddruckers Hamburgers, Edgar Allen Poes home, and grave. Babe Ruth's birthplace.
My personal fave is Bill Bateman's Bistro. Home of the crab cake covered stuffed pretzel.Great steaks and ribs as well.
For music, there's the House of Rock. It used to be Hammerjacks, a club that was legendary for all hard rock bands of the 70's, 80's and early 90's. They reopened at a new location, but it's NOT THE SAME!
Oh yeah, and THE BLOCK! One street of 30 strip joints. It ends somewhere near the Baltimore City Police Station.

I live on the Jersey shore, so during the summer we are swarmed by tourists and day-visitors from up north. BENNY is an acronym for these people meaning: Bayonne Elizabeth Newark New York. They are easily spotted by their shirt and sock tan lines, the big hats, NY licence plates, bad driving, and general cluelessness. In other words, a Benny is a n00b of the beach. Hey eldirion, where near the shore do you live? I'm about an hour (South Jersey) from my uncle's house in Ocean City. I've definitely heard of Bennys (never benn called one), but shoobie is what my uncle has always called the people who park in front of his house blocking his driveway. Everyone else I know from the area uses shoobie, as well. Is it just an Ocean City thing?

I have never heard shoobie, so it is probably something from Ocean City. I live in Point Pleasant, about a mile from the beach. I am not sure where the terms Benny originally came from, but that sounds like a plausable explanation.

Having lived my life in Florida, I am now in Southern (small town) Virginia.

Things like Brunswick stew, grits, country ham, red eye gravy and sweet tea are staples here. (Go to a restaurant and everything is fried and smothered in gravy)

Of course, I am still laughing that you can buy chitterlings, pigs feet, turkey necks and even fat back at the local grocery store. In order to eat remotely healthy like I am used too, I have to import most of my food. ;)

Ann Arbor, MI - We have hippies

:yeah:
And we used to have Hash Bash. People would come from all over the country to well, you know. But it was also about alternative uses for hemp, etc. The city government decided it probably wasn't such a good idea anymore. It didn't stop all that long ago, though- like less than ten years. Timbo, or other A2 locals, does that sound right? Edited to add: I don't smoke myself, but it was always fun to go to Hash Bash.

We do have the largest college football stadium, though. They pack people in there so tightly, if your butt is more than about 10 inches wide, you're in trouble.

But wait, there's more...They also invest in not so typical real estate such as a Masonic Retirement Home, Elementary School and a "Poor Farm" and create unique establishments that include 3 or 4 restaurants, overnight guest rooms, meeting rooms, day spas, movie theaters, outdoor ampitheaters.

And many of these are Haunted!

Hello fellow North Carolinian....you forgot grits...plain grits, cheese grits and shrimp and grits...and livermush (don't ask)...and it ain't sweet tea if your teeth dont rot and your spoon doesn't virtually stand up in the glass.

And ditto for the pizza....it is a struggle...if you get up to Sylva, NC you can score a good one from Speedy's...best I've had in the state.

Actually... lol I am gunna ask. I'm quite curious now. What is this livermush?

Seaicilin
06-25-06, 02:58 AM
It like a liver paste that is lumpy and kinda granular (gross, huh). It comes in a rectangular wedge wrapped in waxy paper...you can then slice it...lots of folks eat it with eggs or make a livermush sandwich...And some people break it apart like ground beef.

I dont even know if it is beef or (gulp) and I apologize Mr. Cluck (I am trying to be a good clucker here) but it may be chicken....All I know is I don't eat it...but my dad (a yankee - go figure) and my hubby (big ole southerner) just love it.

Um no idea.

Except that we are all living in the land of the no left turn. My boyfriend makes a joke that he had a friend who was writing a book about the city called "Richmond: The Left Turn and Other Local Myths".

And of course, if you don't know what the Fan is (or why it is called the Fan), you are not a Richmonder.

And then there is the statue on Monument Ave of Arthur Ashe beating the children. That's a purely Richmond inside-joke.

The hot dog hang out is actually called Yesterdogs and they have the BEST hot dogs on the Planet. They also have Pics of all the Famous ppl who have eaten there over the Years. Gerald Ford and Gillian Anderson Were both born and Raised here which kinda sucks cause everything is named Ford this and Ford that and he was only President by default anyway. And when I worked on that side of town ppl would ask me if I was related to Gillian Anderson ( I bare a slight resemblence) I would say no politely and think to myself " If I was would I be ringing up your Groceries you Idiot?"

I just thought of another one for Michigan, but it's not food related.

Just to confuse visitors and tourists, we have the "Michigan Left."

If you need to turn left at some intersections, you actually start from the Right turn lane, turn right, drive for about a 1/4 mile or so, merge into the left turn lane, make a U-turn around the median, and PRESTO, you've turned left!

Um, yeah. You do know that the same hand, flipped over, is what we cheeseheads use to map our Wisconsin origins; turned over (thumb down), it's Illinois (yup, I now live in Chicago, up at the knuckle of my thumb), flip it over one more time it's Indiana. As I'm sure Colonel Smuckers might tell you, the founding fathers mapped the territories of the 1787 Northwest Ordinance that way on purpose. The territorial governor of Wisconsin suggested that the unfortunate folks from the three other states would find it helpful...

There's a hot dog stand named "Wiener Circle" in a fashionable part of Chicago called Lakeview. Small, nondescript, decent fries. The great part is going in there around weekend bar time. All the servers are ornery black women, and most of the customers are drunk white 20-somethings. When your order's up, the servers yell something crass at you, like "come get your f#$&*in' hot dog, mother-F#&$*er!" And sometimes the drunk white boys will holler back, and sometimes it seems like a fight might break out.

The funny thing is, that's the perpetual ambience of the place. It's known for its "snappy" service! Ya gotta check it out when you're in the Windy City. It can seem a bit creepy at first, but folks seem to have a good time with it.
