View Full Version : Was that his real purpose?

I'm curious about Eko's need to confess to Henry Gale. Why him? Why not Ana-Lucia, who he has a semi-relationship? Why not Locke or Jack? Why did he need to confess to someone he didn't know?

In another thread, someone says, he's informing Gale, that if he crosses the survivors, he'll have him to face and his "Jesus stick".

What's your opinion?

Besides the stuff in this thread..http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15563, dealing about Eko and his cutting of his beard, Eko seems to feel that by asking forgiveness for killing the 2 others when they tried to kidnap him, he was admitting that he feels as if Gale is an other as well. Instead of telling A-L (who already knows he killed the 2 people), Jack, or Locke. Eko didn't even know who this Gale was, and wanted to make sure not to cross paths with Eko's new friends, our Losties. Just my interpretation though.

Yeah it seemed to me as weel that ecko was telling him because he thought he was an other.

He said "If you mess with me, I'll crack your skull."

Here's my twisted logic:

I'm thinking Gale is the *leader* of the others. Twist is: the "others" don't know who he is. They never see "him". Just like the wizard of OZ, hence the name connection. Eko knows Gale in an other.

Now then, Eko wasn't exactly confessing. He was giving Gale a message to relay to the rest, and a threat. He basically was saying, I'm on to you, the same way he pulled leverage over Jack. His message is, I already killed 2 of your men, anybody else screws with me, and I'll kill them too. He'll want Gale released, so the message gets back to the rest of the others.

When Eko cut his beard, that was the final gesture, in that he's completed his penance. He's cleansed, it's tabula rasa time. Clean slate, starting over. He's a new man, a bigger badder dude than he was before. I took the cutting of the 2 beard strands, as a kind of "cluck off" gesture, similar to cultures who don't use the middle finger - but use a hand gesture under the chin.

Also, maybe Eko knows more than everybody else. He's quiet, he watches, he gathers info. He seems to understand the reels better than Locke, and maybe he saw something in the smoke that gave him info nobody else has. Bottom line: he's onto Gale, and he's gonna kick his ass down the road.

Pretty much what shbl says - it's a message and a promise.

I, too, am in absolute agreement with you. I especially agree that he is super-observant and keenly aware of all and his surroundings.
However, I would like to to add one point that I don't recall reading in this thread. To Mr. EKO creepy Henry Gale represents "The Others' tribe/clan/family/posse/brotherhood/faction/organization,etc.," whatever you want to call it. And that by confessing to Henry he has confessed to The Others as a whole group. Remeber, EKO comes from a background of formalized structure and can therefore relate to and respect "the group" as opposed to the random individual.
