View Full Version : ...And You May Call Me V

I was able to get into an early screening of V for Vendetta at 10 on Thursday night. I am writing this directly after seeing it, so I am still strongly impacted. I do not know how I will feel in the morning, but I dreadfully hope that it will not change.
What I want to say most after seeing this movie is this: Go See It. This film is beautiful, powerful, stunning, amazing, but above all else, important. I am so affected by this movie that I doubt that I will get much rest, or rather perhaps I will sleep more soundly knowing that there is a picture available to viewers. This picture is that of the emotions and ideas that run through my mind, and most likely the minds of countless others, when they wonder what may be in store for us and how humanity will react to the inevitability of its flowing changes.
I do not feel I am expressing myself as well as I would like...in the morning I will be able to clarify my feelings and opinions of the film more exactly. I will now just describe the movie itself rather than the idea it embodies.
The dialogue in this movie is rich and fast-paced. You must pay attention to catch every word, making it seem that much more real. The visuals are outstanding, creating a beautiful environment that draws the viewer into believing everything that happens. The acting is superb; I almost forgot that V was wearing a mask, that is how forceful and effective the dialogue and body language was done by Hugo Weaving. Natalie Portman's portrayal of Evey? Wow. Simply incredible. She handled emotion smoothly and skillfully in a way that was completely indistinguishable from a genuine reaction.
The film is about an idea that cannot be put on one man, that must be borne by many people; I won't say exactly what the idea is in case someone does not want spoilers. I hope that many many people see this significance and understand what they are seeing. It is not a 'cool' movie; if this is what you are feeling when you watch it, either you are misunderstanding your own feelings or you do not understand what the movie is saying. It is a portrayal of a vastly important idea that many people uphold, and 'ideas are bulletproof'.
I understand that this is quite a passionate review, even it could even be considered a review, but I plan on seriously critiquing it with others.
If you see this movie, please post your opinions in here.

I was amazed how so many V words could be incorporated into a story without ever seeming forced. I hope that is still in the movie.

On the Subject of "V"; I saw a trailer a couple of weeks ago, pretty good but I doubt I'll go to the cinema to see it. I'll most likely wait for the DVD.

I was a major fan of the original work by alan moore and had high expectations for this film. I saw it today and i wasn't blown away but i was.........affected. It was a visual beauty, had just enough action to keep me interested, and many scences almost str8 from the comic. It was well worth seeing......but as a comic fan and a longtime fan of v {i have a v tat if that tells you anything, lol} i was a lil bit dissapointed with some of the dialogue and some of the bits that moved me in the comic that the feature lacked. All in all i would give it a 4 out of 5 stars, plan to see it again tommorow with my gf, and have even gotten some audio i plan to play with and make available that i "pirated" hehehe
I have seen many reviewers comparing the violence with the london bombings and the 9 11 terriosts acts but they miss the point. If you can get your hands on the comic read it it will change your views on the government forever.......

I'm hooked now too. Plan to see it this weekend or next. I even read up on November 5 and Fawkes and the whole nine yards (metres?). By sheer concidence I watched a DVD of Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native tonight and just noticed (I've read it many times) it opens and closes with Bonfire Day, November 5. The novel is set in 1842.
Doesn't matter though. The whole time I'm watching it I'm going to think it's ILLB behind that mask. And I'll always know what he's thinking...

Yeah, there is an entire conversation where V starts every word with V, it flows very nicely and is articulated well by Hugo

so why do you all think it got the R rating? My 11 yr old son is very bummed he can't see it but I think he thinks it is similar to Matrix or Batman or the like. I tried to explain that it is deeper, darker than that but he's 11, that explains that!

There are some Holocaust-reminiscent scenes where there are mass body graves, and they are all naked. This in addition to the violence and a little language is probably what did it.

Although the movie does have similarities with the Matrix, with a rebel against the controlling forces, it is definitely a lot darker and more intelligent. It focuses more on the ideas of terrorism, idealism, and the people behind an idea, so your son might not understand what the overarching ideas are being portrayed, but he may just see it as an cool flick. There is a lot of dialogue though, so I don't know whether it could hold the attention of one that age, but then again I don't know your son :).

It's very thought-provoking. There's not a wasted scene in the whole thing. It's not too action-heavy, and that helps in a movie like this. A couple of mind-bending turns here and there, especially after Evey gets abducted. ;)
"Ideas are bulletproof."
eldirion
03-18-06, 07:04 PM
That is what I liked most about it. It was excited after the movie, and not because it was a cool action flick. It actually put the idea first, then the characters, and then the events. The speech with all the v words actually summed up the whole movie very nicely.

Yes. The dialogue was front and center. The action was icing on the cake. Oh and V's monologue? Brilliant.

This very afternoon I viewed V for Vendetta at an IMAX venue. As various members of this vociferous bunch can verify, I am a veritable vault of profundity, so it won’t surprise you to see a vivid review of this vindictive yet vanguard video:
Visionary Voodoo!!!
That’s right—this movie fills a verily voluminous cinematic void. Despite the visual distraction of V’s insignia, which suspiciously resembles the universal symbol for anarchy tipped onto its head, Hugo Weaving’s valorous use of all “v” vernacular was nothing if not vigorous and vivacious.
For her part, Natalie Portman’s visceral portrayal of Evey Hammond truly captivates the violation and vilification any voluptuous woman I know would feel upon having her head forcibly shaved. Perhaps being familiar with ILLB’s volatile utilization of V’s Fawke mask as his virtual avatar, she could not help but swoon in V’s virile presence, despite his repeated vacillation between valiant victor and villainous vermin. True, V’s sexual innuendo was a little harder to reveal than our own vagrant ILLB’s, but it was there, trust you me.
Most venerable verse from V:
“A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.” V
And finally, for those who may find my review viscous, I vocalize but one verse:
“An idea cannot die; it is bulletproof.” V

Is it legal for a movie that's in theaters? Or was this clip released on purpose? If so, go ahead.
Did you look like a boy?
When I didn't wear like pink shirts and earrings I kinda did, yeah. But even when I did wear pink shirts and earings, morons would come up to me and ask why a boy was wearing a pink shirt because they assume a girl isn't allowed to have a shaved head. That just made me want to shave it more. But I've grown it out quite a bit now. I've decided to go for the long look. haha
Anyway, I saw V for Vendetta last night. And I think I can easily claim this could be the movie of the year. I'm absolutely in love with Hugo Weaving. You know you're a fabulous actor when you can show so much of a characters soul while wearing a mask the entire movie.

So I saw V with my best friend this afternoon
Were both rather avid Sci-fi nerds, However while both of us liked it, neither of us was overley impressed. It was a good movie, intresting and fairly complex, but it wasn't something we felt the urgent need to see again, or to anylize, or to even disccus for more then 5 minutes (a rarity in and of itself)
We both really liked the charichter of V and the inspector, as well as certain moment's. But the movie as the whole; while having really strong elments, hung together rather limpley.

Last Saturday I saw V in a sold-out show. Today I watched it with maybe 20 others scattered about. It still rocked. I noticed one thing that bothered me, though.
How much did DELL have to pay the producers to get their logo on all the damn computers in the movie??? I found that disturbing, and I'm glad I missed it the first time around. Stupid corporate sell-out, in my opinion.

Time for Quotage:
Evey Hammond: Who--who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what... and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking on the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
V: Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

1st time: IMAX. Very cool but sold-out theatre. Annoying.
2nd time: Regular. Only 20 others, so I just sat in the fifth row and it was just like IMAX, only cheaper! :p
I truly don't think it made a huge difference for me. Really, the dialogue and story (okay, and cinematography) are the big things, here.
I'm sure my third time will be in a regular theater. And I'm sure (well, relatively sure) you'll enjoy it no matter what!

I have returned from my 3rd viewing of V. Ahhhhhhh.....
Took a friend with me last night and he loved it. The next morning I made my friend breakfast and seriously considered making eggs on toast, and letting him awaken to "Cry Me a River." I crack myself up.
Cready: "Why won't you die?"
V: "Because behind this mask there is an idea, and ideas are bulletproof."

I'm planning on my second viewing, its the sping break and people are busy, but I should see it again next week.A 3rd time for me might not be a possibilty as I'm not sure when they will stop showing it.

Am i the only one who thought this movie sucked??
I was so looking forward to it and i went seeing it at IMAX and i almost walked out. For me it lacked depth, pace and i just couldnt connect with the characters. I liked the general idea of the film and it raises some serious issues but for a comic book/movie crossover i thought it was weak.
Just my thoughts so disagree at your leisure

or in the other scene...
"Would you like to *kick*?"
It's the *kick* of your revolution and you want to *kick*?"
A revolution without *kick*, is a revolution not worth having!"

Put me down under "loved it."
Seeing the trailer, I thought it was going to be just another stupid super-hero comic-book thing (I'm not the "Spiderman" type). Then my brother FINALLY talked me into watching it, and I was pleasantly stunned.
It actually HAS something to say that can start a conversation afterwards (my brother and I argued for about four hours :D ), although I am NOT a fan of Portman, she didn't screw it up as badly as she usually does, and Hugo Weaver was simply amazing. I kept forgetting the mask was there, it was like you could read his facial expressions... odd. It was a bit of a Phantom of the Opera meets 1984 rip-off, but I enjoyed it, a LOT, and now I'm going to have to make everyone else I know watch it :)

This movie was awesome. I didn't know what to expect, actually I had sort of low expectations. But even though the plot was pretty basic, the quality of the production, action, was amazing. I don't think that "revolution" is something to be encouraged through violence, but this was still a kick ass movie.
It was interesting trying to figure out the 2 different V actors, since Hugo only shot half of the movie. But He did a really good job of making you feel connected to V even thought his facial expression never changes.
