Well, I didn't know this (I don't do spoilers, my allergies just flare up!), and I'm totally repelled by it.
Where Claire and Charlie seem a natural couple, Sayid and Shannon give me the woogies. I'm severely disappointed on Sayid right now.
And no, I don't consider sexual urges and the lack of females in the main cast reason enough, at least not until they have been in the island a few more months.

I was so freaked out in a bad way...
firstly it creeped me out that he was hittin' up on the first sexual 'oppertunity' on the island...I mean really...they have only been on the island a month...could he really be that desperate already?!?! I mean...shannon...you'd have to be pretty desperate (or boone) to take that...
ewww....
just my own opinion though
and I must admit its biased because I think naveen is the hottest man on the planet!!!

How could you not know? I stay out of the spoiler forum, but it's hard not to read the buzz about them in other threads, ever since she helped him translate the maps.
It makes me lose respect for Sayid too, but then, Sayid is just a puppet of the writers. (Sorry, I know we like to think of him as a real person, almost.) So, I'm really disappointed in the writers.
The USA Today article said that an on-camera spark between NA and MG led them to create a romantic story for them. Which episode/scene was this, I wonder? Makes me think they are just making this stuff up as they go along... not exactly encouraging.
And another thing... Locke says a few words and suddenly Shannon is a changed person? I'm not buying it. I thought everyone had to have their own hallucinogenic vision-quest-type epiphany on this island.
"Am I supposed to be writing this down?" :D Locke is too cool.

You have a point. She has changed alot with little time. I think she is just playing Sayid. And I agree I lose respect for him, but everyone needs some love. But he needs to stop rebounding with this witch of a castaway.

Sayid just wants to get laid, lol! As for Shannon, she MUST
be playing him cause even tho I loved that scene with Locke
giving her advice, she's NOT the same person ....of course
any of us would change our entire personality if we thought
that would get us into bed with Sayid...lol...
I think it is true the writers are 'making some of this up' as
they go along...(re: the spark between NA and MG)..but I
think with so many characters that could easily happen.
Doesn't mean they have a 'guide' for everything/everyone.

Gosh, is it just me, or is there a lack of Shannon love in this forum? ;)
I'm with vinnylover; I'm trying but it ain't easy. (Unlike Shannon. Hee.)
This is obviously a rebound relationship for Sayid, and a rather calculated rebound at that. Meeting Danielle led to his epiphany that he had to let go of Nadia, or after years of loneliness and celibacy he could end up batshit crazy in a hovel in the jungle of mystery. So, he decided to get back in the game. And, being the man he is, he's going about getting laid in a courtly, flirty, respectful, romantic way, rather than just throwing some eager chick on her back on the sand. (Brief pause to savor this image. Where was I?)
Edited to add: Not to be indelicate, but those of you who are complaining that it's way too soon for Sayid to be this hard up need to remember that we have no idea how long he's been celibate. Considering how he's been pining for Nadia for seven years, it could be a long time, or even an obscenely long time.
Why Shannon? Well, she's sexually available. She's beautiful; she's smart and verbally facile; she's into bondage on the first date.... I can also fanwank that he sees something in her--some unrealized potential. Sayid has spent years of his life trying to remake himself into a better man, all because someone (Nadia) told him he WAS a better person than he believed himself to be. Remember when he told her that he didn't have her courage, and she replied, "You have more than you know"?
As an aside, I don't think Shannon magically changed when she heard Locke's advice; if she was using Sayid before (and I think there are arguments for and against), she's probably still using him now. I don't think that Locke was talking about the way she uses men at all. I think he was talking about her sick dynamic with Boone. For all the Boone claims to be Shannon's victim, SHE is the one who ends jumping in response to his jabs (ex. going on hike in the pilot because he said she was being worthless). Locke was telling her not to let Boone's obsession run HER life.
Overall, I think Sayid figures he can handle her--apparently he decided that the sex and, uh, pleasure of her company was worth the risk of her using him. As long as he doesn't confuse sex with love, I'm sure he's right.
"As long as"...:rolleyes

That's exactly it, Cassis1.
I'm not sure I understand why so many people hate the Sayid-Shannon relationship. When I first heard the rumors that they were going to get together, it seemed odd to me, but the more I watched their relationship develop, the more sense it made. You could see Sayid reacting to Shannon's poor opinion of herself. It's my belief that there's a lot to Shannon that we haven't seen yet and that she was forced to repress her real self and take on her role of being useless and weak, but I'll leave that theory for a different forum. Anyway, I like them together, and by the end of "... In Translation" I was really hoping they'd get past the obstacles Boone had thrown in their way and get together. It's made me like Shannon more, and it's shown a sweet vulnerable side to Sayid.
I also don't see it as a betrayal of Nadia. We know that Sayid carried Nadia's photo and that he tried to find her after her escape, but we don't know that he has been pining away for her all these years; or that he's been lonely and celibate because of her. They were childhood friends, but as far as we know they were never lovers.

I'm with you. Might as well make the best of it. They do make a beautiful couple. And it's nice to see him smiling and flirting. In the long run, I don't think that Shannon has what it takes to make him happy--but frankly, I very much doubt there will be a long run. :\ So he might as well be satisfied in the short run.
And at least there's hope for the #$%^*@& tank top to come off.
SayidsGirl,
Anyway, I like them together, and by the end of "... In Translation" I was really hoping they'd get past the obstacles Boone had thrown in their way and get together. It's made me like Shannon more, and it's shown a sweet vulnerable side to Sayid.
My problem (one of them) is that the Boonely obstacles ARE pretty major and shouldn't have been glossed over in half of one episode. That's a recipe for trouble right there. It's like overlooking the woolly mammoth in the room. I can't help feeling that the reason the course of ...love, I guess, is running so smooth is that it's all going to be blown to hell when Boone spills about the stepcest--or it's all going to be blown to hell when, well, you know. :(
I also don't see it as a betrayal of Nadia. We know that Sayid carried Nadia's photo and that he tried to find her after her escape, but we don't know that he has been pining away for her all these years; or that he's been lonely and celibate because of her. They were childhood friends, but as far as we know they were never lovers.
Well, the celibacy is a mystery, but Sayid did tell Danielle that his blind hope that Nadia was alive had taken him farther and farther away from other people. So his {love for}{obsession with} her has hurt his relationships, romantic and otherwise, and does seem to have contributed to his being a lonely person.

cassis1, I agree with most of what you say. I don't find the fact sayid is romancing that problematic, it's his choice that irritates me. We all saw what a manipulative b@#$h shannon is, sleeping with her step no less, not to mention all the other twisted crap she pulled. And on the other end you have a man who idolized a childhood friend to the point where he risked his life/career to save her. That's the worst part. I think he deserves better, and I would love to slap him into reality. But, if the shirt comes off, or any extra, COOL!!!!
moonshadow707
03-01-05, 02:02 AM
Just to clarify my position:
When I said I was losing respect for Sayid, it certainly wasn't because he wanted sex, or because things were moving too fast. It's simply Shannon that I object to.
I would have no problem accepting him with ANY of the other women on the island. Kate, Danielle, Rose even. Some random extra. I wouldn't hold it against him if he stole Claire away from Charlie or if he and Sun had secret rendezvous.
Hell, I wouldn't care if he and Sawyer became jungle pals!
But Shannon... "How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways..."
Sorry... just the way I've felt about her since the beginning. (I'm sure Maggie Grace is a fine person, however.)
The tank top... not too worried about it. If I have an unshakeable need to see him with his shirt off, I'll rewatch the English Patient, or rent Kama Sutra again.
Do I want to see him happy and satisfied? Again, not too worried about it. He's a fictional character. Besides, I happen to like broody/moody Sayid. I even like angry Sayid.
What I AM worried about is whether he will be on the island next season... and I am very pessimistic about his chances.
One more random thought about the writing:
A couple episodes ago when the raft idea was first mentioned, Shannon piped up that she gets seasick really easily.
Now suddenly she's the accomplished first mate* who's dated a lot of guys with sailboats? I suppose it's possible that she has both characteristics, but it just seems like this "committee of writers" are making things up just to fit each new situation (she's good with ropes so she can make the oh-so-NOT-convincing bondage joke).
* (pun intended, even though the thought makes me somewhat nauseous)

Hmmmm...I like their relationship. First of all, Sayid wasn't always the guy he is now. He used to torture people, remember? Nadia saw something inside of him that gave him the courage to be a better man. And now Sayid sees the same type of thing inside of Shannon and is helping her become a better woman. I think Shannon may end up surprising people. Remember, we've only seen her backstory from Boone's POV.
Van Gogh 2001
03-01-05, 02:14 PM
Moonshadow, you crack me up! I LOVE IT! You write you
could even see Sayid and Sawyer (hmm...I can see Sayid and
Jack, lol!) .... but it is SHANNON! I don't disagree she is
undeserving of him...and I guess I should clarify as well...I don't want to see Sayid happy, but I would like to see him
get laid ...too bad it is with Shannon....But I think in terms of
that, we don't have to worry about her making him "happy"
cause I'm sure she's going to make him VERY angry ....
she's a bitch....(but it is NA and MG fault, they looked so good together and had such great chemistry, the writers picked up on it)....
sniff...you've reminded me of the issue of whether or not Sayid will be killed off. Now I'm depressed.

Ok - first of all, hello to everyone!
Ok - my thoughts on the Sayid/Shannon issue. When I saw it begin to develop I was sick to my stomach...I was screaming at the TV. I CAN'T stand Shannon...or at least I thought I didn't.
I still don't see them together...they just don't fit in my eyes...(he goes better with me of course! lol)....but, think of a few things....
As someone pointed out earlier, we have only seen Shannon through Boone's eyes. Maybe Boone is the crazy one! He is obsessed with her and maybe she runs around from country to country is to get away from Boone. I can't remember just now, but did she call Boone to come get her, or did he just show up in Austraila to get her?
Also - They have been on an Island for a month now...Sayid is a man...like any other man. He may feel that since they are on that island that there is a good possiblity that he may never see Nadia ever again (that is if she is even still alive) and that he may not get off that damn island. He's gotta get booty from someone before he dies...and Shannon has definately made herself available (and I'm refering to the possibility that they might not leave the island, not that he will be the one who dies, cause if that happens I will go insane).

A tv show, really???? Who would have thought?
You do realize that you are posting in a forum devoted to analyzing a tv show, right? Therefore, your admonition to "realize it's just a show" is not only insultingly condescending, but utterly out of place.
As far as "anything being possible" because it's a tv show, my point (which apparently was completely missed here), is that some of the people posting above were justifying a character's interest in another character with so-called reasoning that I found particularly offensive.

Sure, we all know that Lost is a TV show and Sayid is a fictional character, but I think that the one thing anyone who's been on the Net for a while can agree on is that people can have pretty strong opinions on fiction. You don't have to lose contact with reality for that! :)
Azteclady,
So, going a month without sex is deprivation of some kind?
A man has 'needs' that he must satisfy and whomever is available will do?
And here I thought we were living in the 21st Century!
It does sound a little Harlequin-romancey when you put it that way :b , but don't all people have needs? Not just for sex--for comfort, companionship, communication? And one of the ways to satisfy those needs is through sex. Sex/flirtation/flings/even relationships aren't always about true love. Especially when you're stuck on a desert island and every day could be the one that you're eaten by a big invisible pissed-off giraffe. Isn't it kind of harsh in the 21st century (;) ) to base your respect for a character on whether he/she chooses to be celibate for an indeterminate future or not?
Besides--if Sayid were really out for nothing but sex, he and Danielle would have been doing the jungle rumble. It's not as if she wasn't interested...(and talk about having "needs"! The poor woman!)
Scatcat,
We all saw what a manipulative b@#$h shannon is, sleeping with her step no less, not to mention all the other twisted crap she pulled. And on the other end you have a man who idolized a childhood friend to the point where he risked his life/career to save her. That's the worst part. I think he deserves better, and I would love to slap him into reality.
Believe me, I agree that she doesn't deserve him, but we have to keep in mind that Sayid doesn't know about the conning and the brother-humping--and I bet the latter, at least, would be a deal-breaker.
Also, while WE might believe that he deserves better, I'm not sure that HE does. I don't get the impression that Sayid likes himself that much. Certainly his past crimes weigh on his mind, and the fact that he thinks he was unable to save Nadia does too. Maybe he'd rather be with a person like Shannon, who has such obvious flaws, than with someone who seems to have it more together like Kate (although SPEAKING of manipulative bitches!).
Moonshadow,
When I said I was losing respect for Sayid, it certainly wasn't because he wanted sex, or because things were moving too fast.
How I wish that he and Sawyer could be "jungle pals." NA and JH have the BEST chemistry on the show, bar none. And I get where you are with hating Shannon: 82% of the time I hate her too. (The only time I've sort of liked her was when we found out about the asthma. I think it explained a lot about her character. But not humping her brother! :x That got me right back on the hate train.) But she's what we're stuck with at the moment, and while I don't have a lot of hope that things could turn out well, I'm trying to keep an open mind.
Besides, I happen to like broody/moody Sayid. I even like angry Sayid.
Angry!Sayid is my favorite. Well, okay, next to Smart!Sayid, and WittySayid, and...Anyway, I was so happy to see that little temper tantrum in "Numbers." He's been way too mellow lately (and to keep on topic, maybe this means that he and Shannon aren't sleeping together already!).
Enchantedmajick,
Maybe Boone is the crazy one!
Maybe? :lol
Of course, this entire subject might be moot now that Sayid has found his picture of Nadia. That might remind him of where his heart really lies, and then he'll break it off with Shannon, and she'll have a jealous fit and start seeking revenge and... oh. Never mind.

I actually like Shannon with Sayid. Yes, it may seem a bit odd, but remember something...Shannon is a young girl who made mistakes, just like Sayid did. I don't believe that anyone, even a fictional character, needs to be labeled for the rest of their lives for those mistakes. Shannon can and likely will, change. And Sayid could easily be one of the mechanisms to help change her. I also think that the backstory of the character might indicate that she hasn't had an easy life in many respects, money or not. I say go for it!
BTW, I also am worried about Sayid's days being numbered. Someone's going, and it could be him...

I don't quite understand why everyone hates Shannon so much. I thought from a certain episode where you see background on her and Boone that the girl obviously has a lot of issues. I think deep down though she's not a bad person, just messed up and confused. I think Sayid can see that person underneath and Shannon is grateful that someone is even trying to break through the facade she puts up.

UGH!:x
I hate her, I hate her, I hate her!
Sorry. I forgot what a strong reaction I had to how absolutely vile Shannon is in H&M. Granted most of it was in Boone's fevered and perverse brain but her sexual blackmail was NOT. And there's Sayid, being NICE to her. If he only knew, he'd go throw himself in front of Lostzilla rather than waste his time with her. Maybe if we'd heard enough of their flirtatious conversation to know why he was smiling, I'd feel a little more charitable, but right now--not.
Sorry for the rant. I will now return you to your regularly scheduled Shayid toleration.

No need to apologize, Cassis1. Rant away. This IS the Sayid forum, after all, not the Shannon forum. I would not be so rude as to go over there and say what I think about her, but here, I'm calling it like I see it.
Boone (to Shannon): "You've always been a self-centered little bitch, but now you're delusional."
Ian Somerhalder (speaking of Maggie Grace): "She's hateable on the show, definitely. But in real life she's the sweetest and most adorable thing on the planet."
So many things Sayid doesn't know about Shannon, but how could he not have noticed that she pretty much just sits around working on her tan while other people are actually working? She'll have to do a whole LOT of changing and growing up before I'll tolerate her.
Somebody needs to Boonebeat some sense into the man.
Also - I take back what I said before about not caring whether Sayid's tanktop comes off or not. I saw Bride and Prejudice this weekend - the high point of which (for me) was Balraj on the balcony with his shirt open.
What the hell was I thinking? The tanktop MUST COME OFF! (But preferably without Shannon in the scene.)

Without going into spoilery details, I am cautiously optimistic that we might get some semi-nekkidness this week. :D

On this same note, I read a fan fic over at www.fanfiction.net (http://www.fanfiction.net) a couple of hours ago in which Shannon is watching Sayid help on the raft and do various other things. Finally she grabs him, pulls him away and says that he's been working for days in jeans and a wifebeater (the author's words, remember, but the thought is the same!) and that there is only so much that a girl can take. :p

i've been readin all of yar opinions n i just dont understand why ya hate Shannon so much...
i think that she is spolied rotten but the situation in the island change her n the only person that sees all her potencial, as Cassis said, is Sayid.
when they r translatin the maps he realizes that she is a woman with some issues, but that maybe she has other good qualities.
n i dont think she will dump him... i think she realized at last, that they will never be rescued or that it may take a looong time before that happenes, so she decided to change, to be a better person for Sayid... to star from the beginin n be the woman he deserves...
as for Sayid, i think he wants to protect her, to do what he couldnt do for Nadia...
n they make a beautiful couple... i just cant picture him with anyone else
in season 2 im hopin to see some of Sayids flesh... :evil

I don't see anything wrong with Shannon pairing up with Sayid, but personally:
I'd rather see Shannon with the monster, if it was a male.

I think I read in one of the threads (i think the one about Naveen's magazine interview) that it was his idea to hook up with Shannon.
