I was reading the Numbers transcript and you know...he's just WEIRD about not wanting to head into the (heart of) the Dark Territory.
I understood his reasoning back in Whatever the Case May Be. He was wounded, Rousseau was crazy, she had tortured him, she was armed, there were other nutcase kidnappers running around the jungle. Better to stay put and try to make what sense he could of the maps. Also, I thought he felt sorry for Danielle and wanted, in a way, to protect her since she chose not to join the castaways.
But ya know, things have changed since then. The crazy kidnapper problem has been more or less solved. The arms gap could be bridged by the marshal's guns. Sayid has been unable to make much of anything useful of Rousseau's notes and maps.
If he's protecting her, why not just SAY so? Why just stonewall anyone who so much as suggests dropping in on her to borrow a cup of sugar and a battery? Jack seemed to think Sayid was just being a big ol' chicken ("You don't have to go"), but I don't think that's the answer. When required (because Hurley was putting himself at risk), Sayid showed no qualms about returning to Danielle's territory.
He just didn't WANT to.
And the most confusing thing at all? After the Chateau Crazy goes boom, Sayid tells Jack, "She must have known I'd return here someday and bring others." She must have? How did she know that, considering that Sayid was doing a bang-up job of convincing everyone (well, at least of convincing me) that he had no intention of ever trying to find her again.
