I don't know why, but I think that we are led to believe that the woman in the picture is Sayid's girlfriend/wive, maybe a sister. That's why he tries to get off the island as soon as possible.
I rather think the person on the photo is dead already and his flashback will tell the story. His motives for getting away may be related to the person, however. Not sure in which way.
