PLEASE KEEP RUNNING COMMENTARY IN THE CHAT ROOM OR THE HYPE THREAD UNTIL THE EPISODE HAS AIRED. Thank you.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Episode Description:

Libby lends Hurley support when he begins to think the island is having a strange effect on him, and Locke's sense of purpose is shaken when the prisoner provides new information about the hatch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are just a few things that I'd like to mention in order to hopefully make everyones viewing of the Episode Discussion Threads a little more enjoyable:

* First off, if you haven't already, please take a moment and view the Welcome Forum (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2) as it is quite easy to get lost here. Many questions can be answered by simply taking a few moments and reading the Welcome Forum.

* Want to revisit a topic that's already been discussed (i.e. the P-word) with a new angle? Then please view the Guys? Where are we? (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4) forum where any and all topics are open for discussion.

* Have a theory that has possibly been mentioned before but you have a different twist on it? Then take a look at What I think is going on (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5).

* Both "Guys? Where are we?" and "What I think is going on" are where you can re-hash old ideas, concepts, and theories to your hearts content without worrying about your posts being merged or moved.

* If you have a question about how to add an avatar, a profile picture, a signature picture, or how to edit your location, please visit the LOST-TV Help Desk (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=48). You can most likely find the answer to your question there. If you cannot, then feel free to start a new post there about the problem you're having. The moderators, administrators, and web masters here keep a very close eye on that forum and your question will not go unanswered for long.

* If you have a question how to find past episodes of LOST, please take a look at the Miss an Episode? (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6657) thread.

* If you have a question about what so-and-so may have said in a past episode, please take a moment and look through the transcripts (http://lost-tv.com/transcripts/index.html) of past episodes. Our very own spooky puts a great deal of time into creating these for us and she's rarely, if ever, wrong in her transcription.

* If you have a website related to LOST that you'd like to mention for everyone to check out, please post it in the Advertise your LOST site/RPG here! (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11578) thread.

* If you're looking to see if something has been posted here before related to LOST, please take a moment and perform a Search (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/search.php) of the forums. That link will allow you to search the entire forum in the event that you may not know where something has been mentioned or is currently being discussed. Those of you who have been with us since before we moved to our current location probably know that the Search function at our old home didn't work very well, if at all. However, the Search function here is very thorough so please utilize it.

* If someone uses a word, acronym, or slang that you're unfamiliar with, please check the LOST-TV Dictionary (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10085&highlight=dictionary) before asking what something like TPTB means.

* If you're having a problem unrelated to LOST and need help from the moderators and/or administrators, feel free to PM any of us. We'll be glad to help you out. You can find a list of the mods/admins here (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showgroups.php) as well as at the bottom of the thread listings for each individual forum.

I simply added these links in order to keep non-episode related material out of the Episode Discussion threads. Material that is non-episode related clutters the Episode Discussion thread and makes it difficult to navigate for many.

Thank you all for your time.

So. Looks like Dave is purely a figment of Hurley's imagination. Maybe that's why nobody would pass Dave the ball in the basketball game? Hurley's psychiatrist seems to be working with the idea of "Dave" as the side of Hurley's mind that deals with guilt and forces him to eat.

this is my first time post

so yeah yadayada

but i think its pretty obvious that Hurley's freind is made up in his head. Somehow the island is making him real somehow but its a dead give away that the first flashback with Hurley talking to him during the basketball game that he's all in his head.

I might be wrong

I hope im wrong because i think i just figured out this episode in the first ten minutes but...i guess we'll see

oh and the island picture in the background while the doc is speaking to him is cute

What year did the new U.S. 20 dollar bills come out with the colors in it? I don't think it was too long ago.

The real Henry Gales 20 dollar bill had the colors on it, so he must have crashed on the island not too long ago.

You know, this whole thing is almost like TPTB are just debunking more theories...it was a theory out there that this was all in Hurley's head and he was still in the institution...so by doing this episode, and I'm sure they will end it in a minute here with Hurley realizing that it's NOT all in his head...but by doing this episode, TPTB are debunking theories. Either that, or they just liked this theory and decided to use it on the show!

S2E17 ”DAVE”

BIG QUESTIONS:
Who dropped the supplies?
If Zeke is “no one,” then who is “HE?”
What will “they” do to Fake Henry and who are “they?”
Is all this in Hurley’s head?
God can’t see the island?
LIBBY IN THE HOSPITAL!?
Did Henry enter the numbers and execute or not?
Clunking and hum and MAGNET?!
How did Libby find Hurley at the cliff?

MORE THAN COINCIDENCE?
Dave’s white slipper /white sneaker hanging in tree after crash
Beautiful beach picture hanging in doctor’s office
Hurley’s doctor asked him to make a LIST
Locke wiggling his toes in hatch just as he did after the crash
Dharma “incident”/Hurley’s “accident”

SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF:
Man, I don’t know WHAT to suspend this week...except maybe Jin pulling Hurley off Sawyer.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
Hurley’s mom put him in the hospital.
Reason for Hurley’s hospitalization (the deck accident).

MUST GOOGLE:
Clonozipan (sp?)

LOST FOOD:
Goldfish crackers, celery, graham crackers, Oreos, lasagna

LOST COLORS:
Orange again (Hurley’s tshirt, the Birds of Paradise flowers in the jungle as he is walking with Dave.

NICKNAMES:
Tattoo (Charlie)
Moonbeam (Libby)
Deep Dish (Hurley)
Babynapper (Charlie)
Sawyer’s Sayid/mini mart remark was a little over the edge, even for LOST writers, yuck.

NUMBERS:
2 months Hurley had been hospitalized
Sayid gave Henry 3 seconds to answer his question
23 people on a deck designed for 8, 2 died
Locke wanted 5 minutes with Fake Henry
Survivors on island for 2 months

PARALLEL LINES:
Dave: “See you in another life, Hurley”

CHARACTERS:

Sawyer: Sawyer’s background dialogue during the supply drop free-for-all were hilarious. Need to watch that again!

Sayid: Sheesh, is he losing it? Someone take the gun away from him!

Locke: OUCH, the leg.

Sun/Jin: Great reactions to Hurley’s attack on Sawyer! :)

Walt: NEXT WEEK’S PREVIEW?!?!

Ana: “Shut up” to Henry. LOL!

Mr. Eko: Where did he get an old-time washtub? What is he building?

Libby: To Hurley, “You can trust me.” Famous last words!

Redshirts: I love Bruce Davison! Great to see him on LOST.
The real Henry Gale’s wife was named Jennifer.

Favorite Lines:
Charlie’s polar bear on roller blades with a mango remark
Hurley’s naked doody-thrower!

Literary/pop references:
Sawyer to Kate: “I think Timmy fell in a well over that way” reference to “Lassie” TV series.
Dave to Hurley re: Death Star (Star Wars)

Kleenex Moments:
Hurley and Libby’s kiss

Minor Questions:
Was there a “Previously on LOST...”? I tuned in a minute late to see Libby and Hurley walking on the beach. What happened before that?
Where would Eko get an old-time washtub?
Was Dave on an actual trail when he was running with the coconut? I saw a dirt path.
What was written on the chalkboard in the hospital rec room?
Who was in the framed picture in Hurley’s hospital room? There is a thread here where someone is collecting pictures from the backgrounds.

Seriously Creepy:
The doctor’s Polaroid! Dave doesn’t exist!
The cliff! Standing way too close while kissing Libby!
Dave: “It’s gonna get worse before it gets better.”
Libby’s face after Hurley asks her if she thinks he can get better: “Yeah, I do.” !!!

Music:
Kissing on the cliff music, one of the beautiful LOST themes

Summary:
WHOA, almost Too Much Information this time!!! Big hoorays to Jorge for a hugely compelling performance. Glad he got his wish of an island romance, even if it’s with possibly disturbed Libby.
I liked it! And I loved hearing Lenny saying the numbers!

PS Did anyone else think it was funny to plant a Gatorade commercial featuring a WILSON volleyball during LOST? No? Oh, OK. I guess you didn’t see “Castaway.” :)

The God not seeing them line most likely has to do with the fact that the island is under some type of cover - probably a radar cover - probably due to Hanso's deep pockets. He'd have the resources to basically "hide" an island if he wanted to do so.

Eko made what looked to be a Sign of the Cross, but it usually goes (or at least how I remember) head(Father), chest(son), holy spirt/ghost(left then right shoulder). Eko went head, shoulders, and then chest.

Hey, second time posting, kinda stopped coming around these boards when life got busy but my interest returned after last week's episode...Anywho, here's a couple of thing's that piqued my interest after watching "Dave":
1) I thought it was pretty obvious that Dave was some sort of figment of Hurley's imagination in the FB...the way his psychiatrist was referring to Dave during Hurley's session and then the way Dave just seemed to be completely counter to everything Hurley was trying to accomplish while at the hospital, it just seemed like huge signs to me from the get-go that maybe Dave wasn't real.
2) I really want to know more about this "accident" that Hurley caused - Hurley has always been portrayed as this happy go lucky dude in the show up until now; I thought his addiction to food was the reason why his big flaw, but could it be this accident? (23 people on the boat!?!)
3) Did anyone else notice that when Mr. Eko was making his wooden whatever that when he grabbed water from the basin he made the sign of the cross? Just seemed like an interested little tidbit
4) I'm really intrigued at Libby's backstory now, I can't wait until her episode airs. I'd like to know more about what she was in the mental hospital for. I wonder if Hurley will ever figure out why she seems so familiar....
5) My gut feeling tells me to not believe what "Henry" told Locke about not putting in the numbers in the computer. He obviously knows more about that hatch then he's ready to let on. So what's his true purpose... recruiting Locke to the Others, psyching out the losties, getting the hatch back??
6) I think Locke's faith in the hatch and in the island has been shaken by what fake Henry told him. I mean, he's put so much energy in pushing this button every 108 minutes, if he were to believe that nothing really happens if you don't - well I don't really know.
Thats all I have for now, sorry if some of this has been posted in other messages - it's hard to keep up after a show airs!

I think this has a strong possibilty of all being in Hurley's head.
There is nothing in this season or last to say it isn't......that he just has a really good imagination.
The only thing I can think of that would seem to lean toward this would be that the food drop happened with out anyone hearing a plane.

Because he had another breakthrough on the island: Libby convinced him to get rid of his stash of food... but then the huge crate of new food showed up, and the losties wanted Hurley to ration it out again, and he didn't think he could overcome the temptation again, and that's when Dave showed up.

Of course, I could just be high. Anyone got a screen cap?

I guess my question is this: Dave could be appearing because of two things: either this is some kind of "trick" by the island to do something to Hurley, OR Dave is a figment of Hurley's imagination that is being brought about by something that has put him in the same state of mind that he was in while at the mental hospital. If Dave is an island trick, why would the island want to trick/cause harm to Hurley by encouraging him to jump off of a cliff? If Dave is due to Hurley's own mind/sickness, what is happening to him that would bring it about?

Thanks Melissa -- your answer makes sense.

Because he was basically having a panic attack after destroying his food stash, only to see more food had arrived. Food for Hurley is a source of bad things.

so for those who are interested:

the drug hurley asks for is clonazepam also known as klonopin.

its great for anxiety, and pretty much just calms you.
people take it before surgery, for anxiety, for depression, etc. it can be an antipsychotic in higher doses. does anyone have a hi-res photo of the pills? id be interested to see what dosage he was taking. they looked to me like 2 .25 mg pills which would be a relatively small dose.
the dosage can vary widely bn .25 mg and 3 mg is what i have typically seen.

i take this myself which is how i know about it when i have anxiety attacks.

If we assume that the show isn't happening in Hurley's head, then I think we have to ask why Dave is showing up now. We know that Hurley did have a "breakthrough" and realized that Dave was just imaginary. What would make Dave reappear again, and why now?

I think because while Hurley was indulging himself, his brain had no reason for Dave, but when he finally gave up his addiction to food and started to change, the part of him that wanted to eat was manifested in Dave again.

However, I think it's odd that this Dave wanted him to commit suicide this time, it seems pretty extreme.

My first impression was that is was the indentation from the crate, I guess the losties took the wood and used it, and the fish crackers were left behind from the frenzy.

I rewatched the parts where they are in the Institution. There were celery sticks on the table where they were playing Connect Four. In the photo that the doctor shows Hurley, it looks like there is a piece of cake on the table in front of him. I froze it, and walked up to the tv and it still looked like cake and not celery. It was regular tv (the HD DVR is not cooperating), but if someone has a screen cap of the Polaroid it may help.

Also I could just be seeeing cake because I am hungry:coffeedunk:

libby, however, blew me away. What does that mean?

I think it gives some credibility to Libby when she says to Hurley that she understands how he feels. I mean, she's been where he's been. Could also be why they are drawn to each other, on a subconcious level maybe.

For those that have looked at these caps, did anybody else notice some glaring differences between the Hurley/Dave pose and the actual photo?

To name a few:
The celery is arranged differently.
The checkers and pill container are placed at different distances from the celery plate.
Apparently it's night in the photo but daytime in the Hurley/Dave pose.
What happened to the man sitting behind Hurley and Dave in the photo? With a lot of other shows, I'd write these mistakes off as poor editors/continuity people . . . but not Lost. These differences seem almost purposeful.

i'm thinking it's just the fact that they didn't want to waste their time photoshopping a picture taken of dave and hurley. that's why there are a few subtle differences in the polaroid vs. original pov.

... flash makes most backgrounds darker than foreground. and there's the dude in the back if u look.

04-06-06, 03:51 AM
Hurley's perspective is flawed since he's seeing imaginary people. So then since we're seeing his story through his perspective, perhaps he remembers it being different than it actually was. Thus, explaining the discontinuities between the two pictures. Or maybe Hurley is just another Dharma Guinea Pig fooled by a controlled experience set up by Dharma in the past in which Dave is real in his flashbacks and on the island when he sees him. But I think the first is more likely.

ILoveMyPiggies
04-06-06, 03:52 AM
I know this may seem like a really simple reason, but couldn't the differences just be due to a difference in the camera (TV) angle and the camera (polaroid) angle? Also, didn't the camera flash, that could account for why its darker in the background.

Absolutely, she had a dark/troubled/hiding something look. But then again, she's looney! Unless she's a plant. Or she could be both! Or neither. But her hair looks great for having not brushed it in a couple of months. It was a darker shade, and much messier, in the asylum. Well, LOST is only 20 minutes into this episode and I already have questions (and boy is it tough to try not to read any posts that might spoil things...)

We just received major confirmation that Henry is indeed an OTHER.
"He'll kill me!"
AL: Who the man in the beard?
henry: Him? (can't remember what he says but it's like "him? he isn't in charge)
Sayid: how many are there?

Why are they so fearful? Of whom? Alvar Hanso? Degroot?? Again the repeats of "I am not a bad person" reminescent of "good" vs "bad." Where do the "bad" ones go?

I can't wait to see the rest of the episode!!

Anyone else start cracking up at the grins on the Losties faces as they stood around and watched Hurley beat the everlivin' snot outta Sawyer? I love Sawyer, but that was hysterical.

I thought it was good comic relief to see Hurley beat Sawyer up too--But I think Sawyer deserved every punch. Man, did you see the look on Hurley's face after Sawyer joked about seeing Dave behind him? That was a look of pain, like a knife had just been thrust into his heart. He had just confided something very personal to Sawyer (something he wouldn't even tell Libby about yet) and Sawyer made a joke about it. I hate it when people are insensitive like that.

I thought the interrogation of "Henry" by Sayid and Anna smelled like the old "Good Cop/Bad Cop" routine. But Anna left the room and didn't try to get any more info out of him. Perhaps they will return next week.

Agree with you. Bad Cop (Sayid)/Good Cop (Ana). They totally planned that, with Ana "saving" NotGale at the last moment from the gunshot. They're softening him up for more questioning later on. Gotta give him more time to think on what a "nice" thing Ana did for him. After all, so far, NotGale's got no real issue with Ana (that he knows about - he doesn't know what she's been through). Of course, this doesn't mean she's turned into Miss Sweetness'n'Light. Maybe it's more like "Bad cop/not quite as bad cop".

Proof:

- The Turn the Screw book
- Henry Gale mentioning that "G-d doesn't know we're here. He knows about this place as much as everyone else does" (or something like that)
- Dave mentioning that it all takes place in Hurley's head.

Also Libby could be an other, she was staring at Hurley in the mental institution and Hurley is probably the most connected to the Island - related to the numbers.

Honestly, not most of the ones I know, when you're initially admited. But once you are in for a while, they have different levels of security and restriction. Some are more "free range" than others, and if the patients are not suicidal or violent, it's possible. It's not like prison security, where they strip you of anything potentially harmful. There's a layer of trust we try to give patients until they break the "contract".

What happened to the man sitting behind Hurley and Dave in the photo? With .

Anyone who's used cheaper polaroids knows that indoor shots with flash can cause dark backgrounds.

The man is behind them in both the cap and the pic. You have to look closely because the angle & distances of the shot are so different. The cup's about in the same place, accounting for the angle difference. The celery and checkers are different, but that that's no biggie.
The only way I could imagine photoshopping a polaroid would be to scan it in, edit it, print it, then take a new polaroid of the printed edited scan.

What would be the point of doing that to convince Hurley that Dave is fake, then have Dave show up on the island and again convince Hurley he's fake, then plunge backwards off the cliff?

Go Blue, welcome. Or welcome to posting after long-time lurking. Nice evidence. You've been reading and listening. Or someone very recently mentioned the Turn...

Anyway, I sat on my first jury today, and the thing I remember most is that the evidence is most important, but it doesn't speak for itself. Opening and Closing arguments are there for just that reason--to explain exactly what the evidence shows us. So just before the whole "QED" slam dunk, what do you mean by all that? Isn't that a little bit like "The Matrix Does Dallas?"
