I have gathered ALL of the conversations involving Libby. I have added exhibit numbers for you convenience. I would like to spur conversation about this provacative new character.

***EXHIBIT#1, FROM "AND FOUND"***
LIBBY: Sorry, Michael.

MICHAEL: Sorry about what?

LIBBY: You know, about throwing you and your friends into the pit.

MICHAEL: Friends.

LIBBY: What?

MICHAEL: I guess I just never thought about it like that. I mean, I guess one of them is my friend.

LIBBY: I'm guessing not the redneck.

MICHAEL: Yeah, not the redneck.

LIBBY: I don't think I've ever seen someone so scared in my life. And I know about scared.

MICHAEL: That why you threw us in the pit -- because you're scared?

LIBBY: And we've got trust issues.

MICHAEL: Huh, how about that? Where the hell are all the fruit?

LIBBY: We picked these trees pretty clean. Sometimes you can find them on the ground.

MICHAEL: Why don't you head inland? That's where all the fruit is on our side.

LIBBY: We don't go that way.

MICHAEL: Why?

LIBBY: Because that's where They come from.

***EXHIBIT#2, FROM ABANDONED***

SAWYER: Damn it!

[Libby tries to check his wound.]

SAWYER: Okay, okay. I'm fine.

LIBBY: You want to let me just take a look at your shoulder?

SAWYER: What, are you a doctor?

LIBBY: A clinical psychologist.

SAWYER: You're a shrink? Well, maybe you ought to talk to my shoulder.

LIBBY: How'd you get shot, anyway?

SAWYER: With a gun.

MICHAEL: He got shot when they took my kid.

SAWYER: It's bad, right?

LIBBY: Yeah, it's bad. But it's not real bad. C'mon, you're going to be okay. Let's go.

[Michael helps Sawyer up, but Sawyer wants to make it on his own.]

SAWYER: I got it. I'm alright. I'm fine.

***EXHIBIT#3, FROM ABANDONED***

JIN: Water! Water!

LIBBY: Here you go. Here, here.

MICHAEL [pouring water into Sawyer's mouth]: What's the matter with him?

LIBBY: Well, the fever -- he's got an infection -- he's dehydrated.

ANA: We gotta keep moving.

MICHAEL: What?

ANA: We gotta keep going.

JIN [angry, to Ana]: [Says something in Korean like: Sawyer needs our help]

ANA: You want stay, that's fine. But we're rolling out.

BERNARD: We can't just leave him, Ana.

LIBBY: Maybe if we just rest a little while, he'll regain consciousness.

ANA: Rest? Here? Do you remember what happened to us? What they did to us? You remember Goodwin?

CINDY: Ana's right, maybe we should just push on.

MICHAEL: Hey, you know what? I don't remember Goodwin. And I'm really sorry about whatever happened to him, but I don't care. Mr. Eko, can you help me make a stretcher? And Bernard, I need 4 sticks -- sturdy ones -- about 5 feet long.

BERNARD: Yeah, got it.

ANA: You're going to carry your friend.

MICHAEL: Yeah, we're going to carry him.

***EXHIBIT 4, FROM "THE OTHER 48 DAYS"****

[Eko starts hauling dead bodies out of the ocean. Scene switches to Libby caring for a man with a badly broken leg.]

DONALD: Ow, my leg, my leg! Is it bad? It's bad, isn't it?

LIBBY: No, it's not that bad. I broke my leg skiing up at Stowe in Vermont. I was on this run -- going pretty fast -- I was racing this cute ski patrol guy. I went off this mogul, lost my edge and, bam!

[Libby twists the guy's leg to try to set the bone. He screams. Ana looks on, shocked. The guy passes out.]

LIBBY: Snapped my left leg. Now that -- that was bad.

ANA: You a doctor?

LIBBY: A year of med school before I dropped out. I'm a clinical psychologist. You saved that girl's life -- you a doctor?

***EXHIBIT 5, FROM "THE OTHER 48 DAYS"*****

ANA: What was that?

[Goodwin grabs a stick out of the fire and runs.]

ANA: Libby, watch the kids.

GOODWIN: Over here.

LIBBY [to the kids]: It's alright. It'll be okay.

[Ana and Goodwin come upon a bloody Eko and two dead bodies.]

ANA: What happened?

[Eko shows he has killed them with a big rock.]

________________________________________________
***EXHIBIT 6, FROM "THE OTHER 48 DAYS***

[At night on the beach, a roaring fire. Everybody sleeping. The camp is attacked and the kids and some adults are taken.]

Unknown Voice: Behind you! Behind you!

EMMA: Help us, please!

LIBBY: The kids, they took the kids.

[Ana charges one of the attackers and hits her with a rock.]

LIBBY: Nancy's gone. They're gone.

ANA: Which way did they go? Which way did they go?!! [Grabbing the "other" she just hit with a rock] Wake up! Wake up!! Who are you? Talk to me. Wake up!

GOODWIN: She's dead. She's dead.

[Ana starts going through her clothes.]

GOODWIN: What are you doing? [Ana finds a knife] Is that a knife?

[Ana finds a piece of paper and unfolds it.]

GOODWIN: What is that?

ANA: It's a list.

LIBBY: A list of what?

ANA: 9 -- of us.

***EXHIBIT 7, FROM "THE OTHER 48 DAYS"****

[Day 17.]

[Ana digging out the pit.]

LIBBY [entering]: Hey.

ANA: Hey.

LIBBY: Back at the beach -- the night they came back -- you said that Nathan was gone for 2 hours? That he was missing? Creeps me out, Ana. Do you really think it's possible that one of us is one of them?

ANA: Why do you think I'm digging this hole?

_______________________________
***EXHIBIT 8, FROM "THE OTHER 48 DAYS"***

[Day 23.]

[Back at the pit.]

ANA: Where are the kids, Nathan? Where are the kids? Not talking to me anymore? What's that behind you? Get up! [Ana throws a rock] I said get up! [Some banana skins are revealed.]

ANA [to the rest of the group]: Who gave him food?

CINDY: What happened?

ANA: I'm trying to find out what they did to us. [To Bernard] And you're taking care of him?

BERNARD: I didn't do anything. And what if you're wrong, Ana? We don't even know if there is a spy.

ANA: Whose idea was it to stay at the beach where they could pick us off one by one -- his -- Nathan's.

LIBBY: Well, they haven't come since you put him in there.

ANA: Who did it?

[Eko enters.]

ANA: You?

[Eko doesn't speak and walks off.]

[Ana drinking at the river. Goodwin joins her.]

GOODWIN: I'm worried about you, Ana. You've had him down there 4 days.

ANA: I promised that little girl that I would get her back home to her mom.

GOODWIN: Do you have any kids, Ana?

ANA: No.

GOODWIN: We should let him go. We're not savages.

ANA: If I were a savage I would have cut off his finger already. That's tomorrow.

_________________________________________
***EXHIBIT 9, FROM COLLISION*****
[Ana and the group with Sayid. Bernard is picking up his bags.]

ANA: What are you doing?

BERNARD: I'm going Ana. I don't want to be a part of this. I know everything you've done for us, and I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for you. But I'm going.

ANA [to Libby]: What about you?

LIBBY: I just don't think you're the best judge of character. I was with you when you put Nathan in the pit.

ANA: Alright, you want to go? Go. Leave. [To Jin] You -- go.

[Jin looks at Sayid who nods for him to go.]

ANA: Get out of here. Go.

***EXHIBIT 10, FROM "FIRE AND WATER"***

[Back on the island we find Hurley and Libby doing laundry in the hatch.]

LIBBY: Is this washer and dryer newer than everything else in here?

HURLEY: It washes clothes. That's all I need to know.

LIBBY: Ah, finally, someone who keeps it simple. Oh, hey, look at this. [She holds up a shirt] I got it in some of the abandoned luggage. You think I can pull this off? [Hurley just stares at her] Let me give you a hand -- when a girl asks that kind of question, she's looking for validation.

HURLEY [studying Libby's face]: Do I know you from somewhere?

LIBBY: You mean other than the flight?

HURLEY: Flight?

LIBBY: Okay, turn around.

HURLEY: Huh?

LIBBY: Turn around. I want to try it on. Turn around.

HURLEY: Oh, oh, sure, go ahead.

LIBBY: No peeking. [She starts changing] I cannot believe you don't remember stepping on my foot.

HURLEY: I did?

LIBBY: Yes, you did. And it was hard. I know that because I remember you were the last one on the flight, and you were all sweaty, and you had headphones on -- and crunch. You stepped on my foot. Okay, turn around. What do you think?

HURLEY: It's awesome.

LIBBY: Thanks.

***EXHIBIT 11, FROM "MATERNITY LEAVE"****

[Kate and Claire approach Libby and Hurley.]

LIBBY: Hey.

HURLEY: Hey, guys.

CLAIRE: So, you're a shrink, right?

LIBBY: I'm a clinical psychologist, but "shrink" works, too.

CLAIRE: Can you help people remember things?

LIBBY: I guess it depends on what you need to remember.

[We see Kate, Libby, and Claire walking along the beach.]

CLAIRE: So, it was our second week on the island, I was out in the jungle and I thought I was having the baby. Charlie was with me, and there was this man, Ethan. We thought he was one of us from the plane but he wasn't. So, he took me. He took both of us. And, I don't remember. I don't remember anything.

KATE: When Jack and I found Charlie he was hanging from a tree by his neck.

CLAIRE: I have no idea what happened and now I'm seeing these flashes of things and -- you know, I have amnesia. There's 2 weeks missing from my life.

LIBBY: Claire, I don't think you have amnesia. You know, sometimes when something terrible happens to us there's a switch in your head that flicks on to protect us from having to deal with it. Maybe your memories aren't gone. Maybe you're just blocking them.

CLAIRE: Then I need you to unblock them because my baby's sick and they did something to him.

______________________________________________
***EXHIBIT 12, FROM MATERNITY LEAVE****

LIBBY: We're away from all the noises of the camp. Just breathe. Let your whole body relax, good. Listen to the waves. Good, in and out slowly. Keep your eyes closed. Very relaxed, Claire. Just keep breathing. Now, I want you to visualize yourself when you were pregnant. Keep listening to my voice. Think about what you see.

[Claire recalls part of her abduction experience]

LIBBY: It's okay, you're alright. It's okay. It's okay.

CLAIRE: It was Ethan. I saw Ethan. I saw him. It was Ethan.

KATE [entering]: What happened?

LIBBY: I don't know.

KATE: What did you do?!

LIBBY: Nothing, she just...

CLAIRE: Do it again. Do it again!!

LIBBY: No, Claire. You are screaming...

CLAIRE: I remembered, okay. I saw Ethan. He was there and he was giving me an exam.

LIBBY: Claire, what you saw could be combining experiences of what happened before the crash to the night you were having dreams here on the island.

CLAIRE: No, I know this was real. I was drugged. He did something to me.

KATE: Claire, you need to calm down, alright. It's not good for Aaron.

CLAIRE [taking Aaron from Kate]: You know what -- Aaron is sick, okay. I need to find that place -- that room is real. It's real. And there's medicine there for the baby. I need to find it. I need to find it. Kate, please help me find it.

***EXHIBIT 13, FROM DAVE***

HURLEY: What are you doing here?

LIBBY: What are you doing here?

HURLEY: How'd you know where I was?

LIBBY: Jin saw you while he was fishing.

HURLEY: Hah! Jin doesn't speak English.

LIBBY: Sun was with him. She translated. Hurley, what is going on?

HURLEY: No! You're just a part of me that's scared. You don't want me to wake up. Well, guess what? I'm not scared.

[Hurley takes a couple steps back toward the edge of the cliff.]

LIBBY: Okay, okay, Hurley, you're having some sort of panic attack. I get that. But this isn't like you.

HURLEY: Like me? You don't know me.

LIBBY: I was starting to.

HURLEY: Yeah, well did you know I'm so fat that I killed 2 people? And that I have an imaginary friend?

LIBBY: Hurley, please, you're going to hurt yourself.

HURLEY: No, I'm not, because this isn't happening. None of it. I'm just imagining it. This isn't real life.

LIBBY: Why would you say that?

HURLEY: Because in real life, no girl like you would ever like me. Remember when I said I knew you from somewhere? Well, maybe it's because I made you up?

LIBBY: What was the man's name who broke his leg? The day of the crash on the other side of the island, Eko brought a man with a broken leg to me for help. What was his name?

HURLEY: I don't know.

LIBBY: You don't know. You know why? Because it happened to me. His name was Donald, and I buried him. I buried a lot of people, Hurley. So don't tell me that that wasn't real. And don't tell me you made me up. It's insulting.

HURLEY: When you saw me on the beach this morning was I holding a slipper?

LIBBY: Not that I can remember, no. [she holds Hurley's face in her hands] Hurley, look at me. I am real. You're real. The way I feel about you -- that's real.

[She kisses him.]

LIBBY: And that was real.

HURLEY: Maybe you should do it one more time just to be sure.

LIBBY: Ready to go back?

[They start walking back.]

HURLEY: Do you really think I can, you know, change?

LIBBY: Yeah, yeah I do.

This is be my best argument against Libby...

She did alot in "The Other 48 Days" to assist Goodwin. She encouraged Ana's suspicions of Nathan (e 7). After Ana imprisoned Nathan, she praised Ana (e 8).

While I hate seeing posts saying things like, "The look on her face obviously meant..", because I think those "looks" are intentionally ambiguous. I have to admit, Libby has had an awful lot of those "looks". She's either hiding something or suffering from severe facial tics.

MICHAEL: That why you threw us in the pit -- because you're scared?

LIBBY: And we've got trust issues.
This is a little off topic, but I thought it was interesting that fake Henry Gale said almost the same thing to Jack and Locke after he made the map for Ana Lucia.

GALE: Wow, you guys have some real trust issues, don't you?

The same arguement can be applied to each one of the Losties. Hurley thinks he is cursed and bad things happen, Jack tries to lead and things happen to him, etc. etc. etc.

Now granted I am a fan of said crazy person, just look at my banners, but logic can be shown for each person has "bad" things happening to them on and off the island. IMO.

Isn't it possible that those faces are just a sign of paranoia? Which could have been what she was in the mental hospital for. I think this is all just set up for her to go a bit nutty some episode. I don't think she's intentionally evil right now. Though I have gone back and forth on this in my mind.

I'm pretty much thinking that someone on that plane had bad intentions. Right now I'm leaning toward Bernard and Rose because they're too nice. Libby and Cindy are on the list too though. That's just based on a feeling though.

New poster here...

I also think that Libby has a hidden agenda. I don't think she's necessarily in with the "others", but I do believe she has been watching/stalking Hurley for some time, and that's how she came to be on the same flight with him.

It has been theortized that she may know of Hurley's money before boarding the plane, and like you mentioned that she was/is stalking him. Women can play that note like a cheap violin easy. Just like a man can-The Long Con. It will be interesting to see further down the line how this plays out.

After Libby & Hurley's kiss, right at the end of "Dave," she does this great quick glimpse of Hurley after he's turned away from her. It's almost as if she dropped her guard and she's instantly someone else (kinda like right after Goodwyn snapped Nathan's neck).

I'll see if I can find a screenshot at lunch, unless someone else has beat me to it on any number of threads.

They are so far from civilization and no one seems to be thinking about getting off the island anymore, but rather simply surviving and not going completely bonkers. I just don't buy that Libby is running some big con with Hurley on the off chance that some day they'll both actually make it off the island alive and she can dig into his lottery loot. He is presumed dead and that money is probably long gone for him anyway.

She may have some sneaky ulterior motive, but I don't think the money is it.

Yeah, I don't think we have seen enough to substantiate a claim that she is a "Bad Girl". I also don't think she is linked to Hurley outside of thier shared time at Santa Rosa. I think we see her in that flashback to let us know that she was there, not to prove some sinister connection to Hurly.

Also, I mention another problem with Libby "stalking" Hurley in this thread -

We discussed this in the other thread, but I still think it is just "weird flashback face", and I can't read more into it beyond that.

I've always been suspicious of Libby, but not really from the "facial expressions" kind of "proof" that's been presented here... people were making the same silly arguments about Sun & Helen as "proof". As anyone who is good at playing poker will tell you... hard to stake your claim based on what a face will tell you.

Jack, for example, who is good at playing poker. :)

Everybody on that island is secretive and hiding SOMETHING! Otherwise, we wouldn't be interested in them...but I'm guess the direction to Cynthia was something like "Have an ambiguous facial expression for Libby in this scene. We need people to puzzle over it."

While I agree that we have no proof of Libby being anything other that what she claims, doesn't it seem strange she and Hurley had a connection prior to the crash? Even if they never actually met, they were in the same institution at the same time. Plus, with all of the people on the island, she pretty much spends her time focusing on Hurley. They haven't shown us many scenes of Libby interacting with the other Losties since they all merged, save for her hypnosis session with Claire..

I don't presume to think she's evil.. I do, however, believe that her plans did or do include Hurley in some fashion.

If you remember that Saywer was seen in Boone's flashback, Kate's dad was in Sayid's flashback (granted it was a photo he had), Jack had Desmond in his flashback. Now we have seen Libby within Hurley's flashback.
As for Libby focusing her time on Hurley, I think it may be due to the fact that Hurley is an all around nice guy. But I still think something may be not right with Libby....maybe she needs her meds too!

I think this is a good discussion. There is evidence for and against Libby potentially being connected with the Others. In favor of this notion is the seemingly suspicious hints the writters have given us. First that she lied immediately on the beach to Ana Lucia. Second, that she was obviously hideing the fact that Hurley knew her from previous experience. Third, the odd coincidence that Hurley and Libby were in the Mental Ward together raises some interesting doubt.

Against this notion is the fact that we have no evidence to support that the others infiltrate a group in numbers. Goodwin appeared to be alone and Ethan appeared to be alone as well. Also the conversation that Zeke had with Ethan during the "Maternity Leave" flashback suggested that Ethan was making list as a sole conspiritor and that he didn't have any "others" with him.

Bottom line the story telling from the writers seems to portray Libby in a sinister manner. Conversely there is yet any real evidence to support that she is linked with the "others".

thegreatpb
04-12-06, 07:58 PM
I hope the writers don't turn Libby into the Glenn Close type on this show.. We've seen so many times the sweet, caring girl turn into the psycho who goes crazy with love/lust and ends up dying some horrible death in the end. I think it would be insulting to the viewers. And judging from those strange looks we're getting from ole Libby, we may just see her boiling bunnies sometime soon.

She's hiding something but I don't think that means she's DHARMA. Maybe she's anti-DHARMA and is on the island to help end their experiments. She would have been at Santa Rosa watching Leonard or the Doc and "stumbled" upon Hurley. So far, I'm taking her interest in Hurley at face value. She may end up one of our heros.

This may have been mentioned before, but my theory about Libby is that she was a shrink(CP) before something bad landed her in the mental hospital. I think the accident that Hurly blames himself for took someone's life close to Libby(child husband??). And she stalked him to Austraila with plans to kill him.

I really think her "looks" are of empathy for Hugo because she knows DHARMA is messing with his mind and she's there to bring them down. If we take her at face value and she is a clinical psychologist, then who better to go undercover in the DHARMA-run Santa Rosa Institute?

Did anyone catch the passby the cameras gave Hurley and Libby last night? It appeared they were enjoying themselves. I didn't see any strange looks on Libby's face for once...

I noticed that as well. It looked like they were having a good time together. There is something to be said about being with people that can make you laugh.
