Please forgive me if this topic has been raised before at length, but I'd like to talk about the props used in Lost for a moment.

We already know that many times things are specifically placed for a reason, so I decided to compare two specific episodes Raised by Another and Special.

I found that the shots of Claire at the psychic's office contain at least 3 globes in the room. No obvious counterparts in Special, but interesting.

What was common was that there are an awful lot of lamps in both episodes. Many in the psychic's room, many in Claire's apartment, many in Michael's apartment, and a fair number in Walt's home. I realize that lamps are wonderful decorative elements and that some apartments don't have the benefit of overhead lights in every room, but the sheer number of lamps of all different types struck me as odd. There are also many vases in Michael's Claire's and the psychic's home. Again, wonderfully decorative, but a lot to have in such a small space. Speaking of small space, did anyone else get the impression that both Michael's and Claire's apartments were both studios (spacewise) of some kind? Then there is the obvious artist connection that both fathers share.

What is not so obvious is when Claire gets the call at home from the psychic. Above her head is a brown box with, what looks like a white rock, maybe quartz on it. It looks like the same box Michael has in Special. While not common to both episodes, there are 2 flower necklaces above Claire's head to either side of her. They look an awful lot like laias (I still have mine preserved from a Hawaiian trip).

I'm hopeful that these connections go further than the simple need to fill space within a room. Has anyone else noticed prop connections?

Juanita,

If you head on to the characters' forums, you'll find some interesting discussions on different props: there's stuff in Locke's room, there's stuff on Claire's room, there's stuff on Shannon's magazine...

There is a thread in General Discussions on Watership Down (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm2.showMess age?topicID=528.topic) (Sawyer's book) and another in Sawyer's (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm16.showMes sage?topicID=16.topic) forum.

There's a thread on Michael's drawing (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm2.showMess age?topicID=1497.topic) for the card he sent Walt.

You have the Toy Airplanes (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm29.showMes sage?topicID=1118.topic) thread right here, and the one for Kate's little plane (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm29.showMes sage?topicID=766.topic)

And there are several threads on the comic book Walt was reading (please check out drabauer's LOST theories index (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm29.showMes sage?topicID=434.topic) for a comprehensive list of links).

Thanks Aztec for your excellent summaries. But I love Juanita's observations, so I'm indexing this. The producers have said that every prop is meaningful. Without getting carried away, I think that set designers would have been told of those elements to include in the various home interiors, and it's great that you noticed the lamps and globes. Perhaps we can move toward a comprehensive list of what elements carry over from one flashback to the next. The planes and globes seem to forshadow the trip, but other elements may have a subtler meaning. Lamps could indicate shining a light on that which was obscure, or on a person who is special (Claire, Walt).

And the artist studio shows another reversal, but it also reminds me that, in one of themost important running themes, no one has lived up to their potential in the "real" world. Claire was working in a fast food joint, Michael in construction, Jack in the shadow of his father, Locke in a lowly cubicle job, the resourceful Sawyer and Kate outside the law, Shannon living off of men, Boone running his mother's business, etc. It's my contention that they are all special but were kept down through circumstance. Thus props may be one way of indicating the shift from the (to get momentarily biblical) light under a barrel to ligfht of the world.

drabauer, that's why I didn't close the thread - there's so much more! It's worth the effort to keep track of the stuff.

At least, I hope the payoff will make it worth it!

I didn't mention the first time around the whole backgammon pieces / black and white rocks Jack found in the cave - but I'll bet they have some sort of significance. And there was a rather pointed discussion on the stuff found in Danielle's hideout, if I remember correctly.
