We believe the numbers referred to the 8th being the correct date given in the 1st Persephone message. The letters can anagram to many different phrases:
LAUNCHING SPRITE IN SHOW
LOGIN IS ETHAN, PQ IS CHURN
SIGN IN WITH HANSO PR CLUE and the favorite is
WHO IS RUNNING THIS PLACE (from the Mittelwerk flash)
The PR (press release) clue is the word "MIRACLE" found on the WWW/DP page press release, as a dead link. No login attempts. Have been successful yet.
Update (05-23-06): 8, not 1 and 6 many believe to mean that D Cheever, not Alvar and Liddy, are in charge at Hanso (plus login info seems to be in his file in the code).
Found (05-08-06):
Clicking on the date in Alvar's bio leads to a list of travel dates and destinations:
- London: 14.06.2000
- Copenhagen: 12.11.2000
- Paris: 22.02.2001
- Geneva: 12.07.2001
- Rome: 18.09.2001 (to Geneva-no date given)
- Copenhagen: 01.01.2001 (to somewhere in Russia, possibly Moscow or Kursk-no date given, then London-ndg)
- Madrid: 31.12.2002
All dates are given on the site chronologically, except Copenhagen (the second visit).
The site then asks, in a women's voice, "Is he hiding?, Where is Alvar Hanso?, ".
After this a green dot flashs and we hear morse code. After much controversy it appears to read SAFE G (or a minority feel SAFE 9). No use for this code has been found yet.
Found (05-16-06):
persephone.thehansofoundation.org now reads: "115 116 97 110 100 98 121," which translates to "standby."
Found (05-17-06):
The Electromagnetic Research Initiative (or ERI) page now has a date of October 62, 9291. Use those coordinates (x=629, y=291) at the center of the graph and a link opens to www.letyourcompassguideyou.com (http://www.letyourcompassguideyou.com) (See the letyourcompassguideyou thread for clues found there)

Found (05-19-06):
Peter Thompson bio is updated with flashing letters in his bio pic. When anagrammed (some letters used more than once) they spell SURVIVOR GUILT, which is a password entered under his picture. This opens a flash with messages (presumably from Persephone), the last of which reads, "I work for criminals, always have, always will."
Found (05-21-06): Persephone message changes to "2". When combined with "a mouse does not rely on just one hole", this site was found, hole2.thehansofoundation.org. It contains a picture of a man titled q9als2002.gif.

Another way to see the ASCII codes is to press "start" on your 'puter, select "run" and enter charmap, this will bring up a chart of the characters and if you highlight one, it will tell you what number to type. You hold down the alt key and enter the number on your keypad, it almost never works on the numbers above the letters on a keyboard (sorry laptoppers).

Using Ralf's suggestion, I tried looking for these, some are easy... some really not that easy. AND each font is a little different... If we can find out what font was used, this task will be a lot easier.
My list of fonts didn't have a match. Maybe someone else can find it. What I keyed off of when comparing fonts, was the number 9 above. It's odd in that it's fat with a squatty tail... just like me.:)
BTW, you can whip thru the fonts if you select one in the dropdown, keep it highlighted, and then scroll thru the list by pressing the down arrow.

Then, on the world map, hover your cursor near the berumda triangle area (just to the right of the southern tip of Florida), and click when your cursor changes to the finger.
This "invisible" text then flickers there when you run your cursor around under the grey box.

I read that the name of the African country in the first blanked out box is Zambia. That leaves two more blanks to fill in. The second blank, due to the context would also be Zambia, however, the pieces of the letters do not look like Zambia. The third blank is going to be the capital of the second blank. So, we need to figure out the second blank, which will give us the third blank. If the second blank is Zambia, the third blank is Lusaka (capital of Zambia)

The third blank appears to begin with a capital letter that has a line at the top of it, such as Z or D, but not an L as "Lusaka" would have.

I brought the image into Photoshop and found if you use a Times New Roman (Regular) with a 9pt font...Zambia fits perfectly.
Could be it's a slightly different font, but I matched the style and size by duplicating the word 'Hanso' to the right of the blank.

Don't know if this will help, but nowhere on thehansofoundation.org do words get broken across lines with hyphens. Which means that the second location (the one that begins with "M") must be two short words. Which means it's either a made-up location or something smaller than a country, like a province, a state, or an island.

With regard to Hugh's voice mail message, it apparently asks the caller to leave a message or a NUMERICAL message. The ARG experts at LOST GAME (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/LostGame/)are trying to input numbers. Here is what they've done so far (in reverse order)

The first one must be Zambia. You can prove me wrong, but when I worked on it Zambia fit perfectly. I think the second one is a different country in Africa, but I ran through a list of every African Capital city and I only found a couple that could work in the third position. Jeffeff, I agree about the hyphenated word issue.

For those of you who don't use MacOS, all of "garbled" symbols can be found on a Mac by pressing option or shift-option and a letter. For example, "£" is option-3 and "§" is option-6. I've tried a simple replacement without the option key, but haven't come up with anything but garbage. If anyone else wants to try, you can use the "Keyboard Viewer" to expedite the process. It seems pretty clear to me that whoever made thehansofoundation.org was a Mac lover, since the little swirly thing that comes up when you try to use the Login feature in the lower-left corner is a Mac-specific thing.

I too think the guy used a Mac but no hard evidence, just a gut feeling. Do you recognize the font used in the making of the garbage, btw? I think it may be an Apple-specific font.

The code that was posted on the Fuselage reminds me of what you get when you open a binary file in a text editor.

the second blanked out word is a four letter word so Magna, or Macna would not fit. More over, the tops of the three letters following the M can only be certain letters because of the shape of the top of them. Here are some combinations:

I thought that was weird as well. The whited out part is more like a white box over the word and it seems to move a little when you zoom in and out. Only with the M word it hinders when zoomed in and with the Steevo word it helps.

How does "More Soon" fit in that sentence? A proper noun would fit in, like a name of a country or whatever. This would be especially true since the M is in upper case.

dragon- I think the point of the reverse engineering section is so that the decompiled flash informationcan be kept separate. Some people consider that stuff to be a spolier so you should probably spoiler tag your statement.

I guess I'm a bit frustrated over here...we need some serious code challenges. We had Zambia, More, and Steevo. We just did not have Soon. (if you don't want to see the invisotext, don't highlight it)
and with all the craziness and busy servers and mergings and whatever else, that information wasn't communicated well enough. Several people made guesses as to what it actually was but never posted. It was mentioned in the chat. Sorry for that. Something I am sure is easily remedied once the servers clear up. We are glad to have you staypuff and hopefully we will keep the code breaking in this thread to the code breakers from now on.

I was looking at the Missing Organs invisitext, and it reminds me of when someone types in their non-english language, and someone who does not have that language installed on their computer tries to view the words, they show up as characters just like those.

Since this is a code-breaking thread, I think any method used to break them is fair game; and remember Rule #2: there are no rules.
Regarding, Zambia,More Soon and Steevo, Borky, Dragon and others had that pretty well nailed down and the reverse engineering was used as confirmation. I will update the 1st post with this info.
We should keep direct talk of reverse engineering methods in that thread, but we can talk about finds there in here, but spoiler tagged perhaps?

The numbers are to big for the rodent revolution decoder, but it came out like this using its best guess:

I have a thought. The last press release on the Hanso site talked about an intruder. It is possible that the site was hacked and the info you found was planted. I know - I am paranoid, but the way the info is coded etc smells more like a hacker than a TPTB clue.

Good question...perhaps to show what sorts of code-breaking challenges we have ahead of us. We now know how they think...a little at least.
ETA: Also, they could be teaching us. Or they could want to see how fast the code is broken and who it is that's doing it. I suspect TPTB are monitoring people like Duality now...and if so the next one will be even tougher.

Also, a poster (JuJu) in the hanso co-ordination thread used the same abbreviation for thehansofoundation.org when she was refering to an email address earlier. I wonder if TPTB did that as well, and just didn't realize there REALLY is a "thf.org" out there?
also a funny note: I mis-read the post and went to "trf.org", which immediately opens with a login screen. I couldn't get in so I did a check at whois has that site being well over 10 years old, and not modified since 6/05. and according to register: the registrant name is "The Reality Foundation" I'm sure it's not a Lost site. Just thought it was funny.

In which case, what if the website we are prompted to log in to is not the "official" site but another hanso-run website? If companies like Mr Cluck's etc. can be used as a "front" for Hanso shennanigan's, then why not their website?
I dunno, sounds kinda dumb, but just brainstorming, any thoughts?

Agreed. A few clues could be the mispelling of apologizes (apologises) and lower case Namaste. I could be wrong on both, perhaps you can spell apologizes like that, and maybe I am wrong in assuming Namaste is always capitalized...but throwing it out here.
So, lets say the press release is another piece of misinformation planted by the hacker (maybe persephone). They could be trying to pretend that everything is ok with Hanso, in order to get information from someone.....

I assumed, yeah say it ass u me, that the hacker is Persephone or one of the anti hanso group. so in other words it's all part of the game for them to be hacked and us to find out about it. Is there any other reason to think they were really hacked? That would be pretty funny us trying to solve clues that a fan hacked into the site, I really dont think that happened tho. I dont think Persephone is Alex either 'cause she is supposedly on the island, I think it's someone involved with the experiments who saw how negligent/unethical Hanso Found. is. This adds all kinds of layers to the story and brings in the bad twin book too with Valenzetti, I could be wrong about it all but it still is fun using my last few braincells on this game.

How closely connected are the book and the hanso-site? I was just thinking about the string of numbers on the persephone message - could they be pages in the book? Like the first letter/first word/underlined word on those pages?
I don`t have a copy of the book myself, so I can`t check... It`s probably nothing though.

How closely connected are the book and the hanso-site? I was just thinking about the string of numbers on the persephone message - could they be pages in the book? Like the first letter/first word/underlined word on those pages?
I don`t have a copy of the book myself, so I can`t check... It`s probably nothing though.
Wouldn't that be like a VDM? You may have something there.

It's a lemony snicket thing. That is the only explanation I can give, but we have some experts here on it. Are there any numbers that exceed the page count of the book? That'd be a clue.

We could try some combination of the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 or 108, possibly. Like 108 as the letter or word on each page listed on the persephone site. I wish I had bought the book....

I had a thought...
Does anyone remember how the Copenhagen password was cracked at the old hanso site? If you don't, there were a long string of numbers in the source that look much like persephone's numbers. They ended up being reverse character codes for the word Copenhagen and the "Faxed" image.
I tried to go to the old archive of the hanso site on bigspaceship.com. but they have taken them all down. Does anyone have a complete archive of the site? I would like some confirmation that I am remembering correctly.
Anyway, I was thinking that maybe we could use the same methods on the persephone numbers and see what we get. Although, I have no idea how they got Copenhagen from all of those numbers. All I remember is the person that cracked it said they were reverse character codes. Sorry, I know I am not being a huge help here.

Ok, on the subject of the Persephone numbers, I just have to point out that I'm positive, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that it's the ASCII translation we're supposed to be looking at. Notice the frequency of 32s that map to spaces, and the fact that every number maps to an alpha-numeric character (plus punctuation), without any "weird" values that would show up as squiggles or unprintable characters. There's NO WAY that's a coincidence.
So no, the numbers in the code have no value other than their ASCII representation. Trying to add them up, multiply by PI, and divide by 108 is, IMHO, a completely futile exercise.
So...what the heck does "jbo ubs rsnf fv fveG 1 lnZ tub.SEG gn ov tbI" mean?

Someone had the same thought in the Hanso thread.
They did a rot13 on the letters, then had to do a few substitutions. They didn't rot13 the number so that could mean May 14th, not May1 which would make more sense.
yeah... nevermind me. I've been reading this thread for a day now, and somehow thought that code hadn't been cracked. Don't mind me... I will be returning to my regularly schedule lurking right... about... now.

In the original base64 decode of the message, the letters that "don't come out right" when you apply rot13 are all vowels. I've put them in bold here:

I believe ROT13 is a simple substitution cipher that can only be applied to letters of the alphabet. This is easily demonstrated by switching letters like so:

If you applied the same substitution rules for numerals, it might be a ROT5 substitution.

Therefore, if the 1 is to be substituted, it would most likely be substituted by a 6. I think May 6th is more likely.

Yes Jeff Eff, I do. I tried to screencap it but it appears and goes so fast. I tried typing sdsdsdsd all over the site too, but no luck.
It looks like a placeholder for the message before it's appearing... I do something similar sometimes when coding too. lol.. it's just so the developer can see where the text box is while they work on making the site... guess they forgot to remove sdsdsdsd when they finished ;)

The capital letters must be an anagram for something, although I think a good place to start would be to remove the letters "HANSO," since the phrase is likely to contain that word. Also, the "." in the middle of what is likely one complete sentence (i.e., the phrase "8, not 1 and 6" is the second half of a sentence of which the anagram is the first half) could mean that it contains a web address.
So, we need to find a suffix that is in the remaining letters.
"HANSO.NET" leaves the following letters, which someone might want to try to make sense of: WIHSPCINILURG

hi i'm new to the game (well i've been perusing myself for a few days, but i've just joined here officially to get involved) i'm not to sure about my code-breaking skills (infact i'm pretty sure they're non-existant) but i did notice on the hanso site that when you sign in and you get the 'no new messages' screen the mfi logo becomes a root to the power of m (i'm not sure how to put pics in here) (and the WWP logo also remains) and i thought this was perhaps a clue to break a code (i'm not sure in what capacity)? not to the code you're solving at the moment, but maybe something to come up later?
anyway just thought i'd mention it so it was here as a potential solution.

Hey all,
I'm new to the board, and I'm not good at breaking codes or reverse engineering websites, but I have a strange way of looking at things that might help.
The first thing I wanted to mention was this new message. There have been confusion as to the "dates" that we may or may not want to check back at the thf.org for, however, 2 thigns come to mind:
1. The Lost folks never make anything easy. Is it really logical to think they would read the boards, realize we were on the wrong track and give us a hint that was easier to decode than the first one?
2. Even if they DID decide to be nice and give us the right date, what purpose would that serve since as crazy about this as we all are, they know that even if we got the date wrong, because we check the site every day, we would still check the date on the "right" day.
Ok, so maybe it's not so helpful, but I was just thinking that it's not going to be a fun game if they "correct" us everytime we're on the wrong track.
I'll be more helpful next time.

If "PR" stands for press release, then maybe there's something more in the 05/05/06 press release (not just 'miracle' in the WWDP one). I found it strange that the email link at the bottom is a little screwed up: part of the phone number is tied up in the email link. Now that's an obvious mistake and easy to fix, why didn't they?
It's interesting that the first three numbers of that phone number are "816" - maybe a reference to the second half of persephone's message?
If that part was only a reference to dates (that the login is the 8th, not 1st or 6th), I found it strange that it said "not 1 and 6": surely the more normal way to say it would be "not 1 or 6" ?
Also, clicking on the email link brings up an email addressed to "McIntyre @thehansofoundation.org (McIntyre@hansofoundation.org)", whereas on the document, it is written as "Hugh.McIntyre @thehansofoundation.org (Hugh.McIntyre@hansofoundation.org)". So "Hugh" is missing.
Maybe it's as simple as "Hugh" being the login and some permutation of the digits of the phone number the password - perhaps minus the 1 and 6, because the second part of the message says so.

If you download an appropriate reader, the announcement that the hanso site is back up as well as the joop birthday announcement are there. I used the google reader to get them.

Ok, I may be totally talking out of my behind, but I've been thinking about the "8, not 1 and 6" part of the new message from Persephone. Now, if the rest of the anagram is talking about a password, and if the clue is "Sign in with Hanso PR clue" then go back to the Press Release. It's always bothered me that in the link to Hugh's email, they "accidentally" included part of the phone number. The part of the phone number that's linked is: 861-5017. If you read that as part of the clue and then take out the first 1 and six or both 1's and the 6, then the sign in might be:
85017 or
8507 or
with a "/" on the end or with a - in between.
What do you all think?

shauniedarko - I tried 85017 and 8507 as the Party extension numbers on the freephone number... got nothing. May be something in what you're saying though..

in the party extension part of the hansorg phone number, it'll automatically send you to 1 2 3 4 or 5 regardless of what number you put in front of it. so even if you thought the code was 815, it would send you to 1 before you even got to the 5. So, either there is no other extensions, or they will consist of 6 7 8 9 or 0.
I know you guys are the code breaking gurus. Does that mean anyone knows anything about seperating and analyzing the soundtrack. I am specifically thinking about the track playing after the Updated Alvar Hanso bio has been opened. I know nothing about this, so could be way off, but it sounds like there are multiple tracks overlayed on top of each other. Anyone know anything about this stuff?

also the copenhagen 12.11.00, geneve 12.7.01 and madrid 31.12.02 are the only ones that dont turn into static, maybe the clue is within them? or these are the dates we need to keep a look out for.

dualityA few things I've learned about ARGs:
1) Just when you think you've discovered something new, someone somewhere else has likely found it first
2) When you finally do figure out something cool, someone else posts it (via a website/blog) and either they, or someone who saw you solve it, takes credit for it.
3) The most enjoyment of the game comes when people work together to solve clues. It's unfortunate, but in a game this big, most puzzles have been solved before you even log on to see the next puzzle.
I hear where you're coming from, though - and sometimes the first person to solve something does get credit, but in the end, I think it's more about the personal satisfaction of knowing you did it on your own, rather than about others knowing who did it. :Cheers:

The only reason I ask in this thread is because there is an order to the lines as they travel from circle to circle....? Could this be translated to the map somehow?

Ok, I may be totally talking out of my behind, but I've been thinking about the "8, not 1 and 6" part of the new message from Persephone. Now, if the rest of the anagram is talking about a password, and if the clue is "Sign in with Hanso PR clue" then go back to the Press Release. It's always bothered me that in the link to Hugh's email, they "accidentally" included part of the phone number. The part of the phone number that's linked is: 861-5017. If you read that as part of the clue and then take out the first 1 and six or both 1's and the 6, then the sign in might be:
85017 or
8507 or
with a "/" on the end or with a - in between.
What do you all think?

yesterday i tried almost every combination of that numbers... trying to and not to use the 8 for 1 and 6 thing .... got nothing .. used hugh for loginname and ne numervariations for pw... tried the numers for login ... nothing came out...

If you add all the numbers together and continue adding until you get 1 digit you get the following 7 number:
479-5451 (I thought this might be a phone number, I called 1-877-479-5451 and a woman answered. Told her I had the wrong number).
LCP-GRCM (first letter of each site) would also provide the following phone number: 527-4726. I didn't call this one.
Need to get back to work. Not sure if this is useful.

The +3491 is standard from what I can tell.
Anyone feel like calling Spain? rofl. I'm sure this is a dead end, but I love playing with number combinations.
