It is confirmed that no add was placed in the New York Times, Washington D.C. paper, or the Indianapolis Star. The add was from Hanso and referenced Bad Twin. Hi everyone,
I was walking to go get lunch today at a building near the university of minnesota and in saw this.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/Fancyfuchs/LOST%20stuff/Dharmasymbol1.jpg
Now, as much as I would love for it to be a real clue for the show I think its a bit of a strech. Never the less I think it still should be put up just in case cause if it is real then we might have a jump on the game before it starts. Here are more pictures.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/Fancyfuchs/LOST%20stuff/Dharmasymbol2.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/Fancyfuchs/LOST%20stuff/Dharmasymbol3.jpg
I looked up the geo coordinates. they are:
Address: 825 washington ave se, minneapolis MN, 55414
Latitude: 44.973665, N44, 58' 25.2"
Longitude: -93.226656, W93, 13'36.0"
The symbol, picture looked old, like it had been there for a while. It was coverd with dust and i think it was made out of wood, the center part being a mirror reflecting across the hallway. The store it was over was vancant and looked like it used to be bar or pizza place called perrys.
Agian, I would be kinda suprised if this came out to be a real clue but I thought it was worth posting.
Hope the pictures arent to big and feel free to delete this if you wanna make more room.
Thanks, and WEBMAZERS HO!
Fancy.

fancy, sorry to break it to ya, but that's not significant. The bagua is a popular symbol used in Taoism, a chinese faith that was popular long before the show came out. The place you're looking at is just getting setup for a chinese take out restaurant, and what you're seeing is just the Early Heaven arrangement of the bagua, which is another arrangement that predated the King Wen version, which was used for the show. See jaystao's mysticism thread for more, jmberger can explain this to you about the difference of the two baguas.
Nothing to do with the show. I think the restauranteurs will be glad for the free advertizing, though. :)

Since the UK phone call references Geronimo Jackson and their album Magna Carta, I thought I would post this info from the site (before it went down a few weeks ago).
Macna Carta cover shoot, outside Nashville,TN.
We are currently in the studio recording new tracks for our upcoming self-titled EP.
A Brief History
"Geronimo Jackson" was formed on the University Of Michigan campus. Our first album "Macna Carta" was released by a tiny independent label; so if you haven' heard of us, it's okay! We are trying to get the rights back to make the album available as part of our current project.
The Geronimo Jackson "Sound" was a reflection of our times, somewhere between Zepplin and 3 Dog night. Trippy pop grooves with a tad of pre-disco funk. Our new songs will show that, while we all went on to pursue more down to earth endeavors, we continued to grow musically.
Keep checking back for updates! We are hoping to be able to offer a few tracks from "Macna Carta" that wound up on the cutting room floor!
Just wanted to let you know I am in Nashville and will be willing to help out should it be needed!
(:D yeah first post!!!)

I have to agree here. I don't think ABC would be as bold as to try to place clues in locations like that (govt bldgs/airports/etc).
I wouldn't look for clues IN the building, but if there are BILLBOARDS anywhere near....;)

I for one was shocked to wake up and see that we got THE SAME clue. I see some of you are also shocked. So do you think we have missed something? I have the epi on Tivo and after I get back home, I'd be happy to scour the other commercials. Dion and I had been doing that a bit during the live broadcast - Dion maybe we can work on this together today?
I guess I just feel it was a big letdown. The Hanso site is AMAZING. I thought at the very least we'd learn how to access some of the other information there. and maybe we did. I guess since we have nothing else right now, IMHO, its worth the extra time to make sure we didn't miss anything.
OR: maybe there is something else, a physical clue somewhere, we have missed. Like Manar had found that ad with Jack Shepherd (see ALL INTEL), maybe we need to get more diligent in the US.
Any thoughts?

Pen, I thought the same thing about having the clues lead us to the same place. However, I think things will start to happen and more sites will appear. I'm planning on asking anyone I know who watches Lost to be on the look out for references in the media and to report them to me.
ETA: and they will probably start looking for a nice peaceful place for me to live.
I reckon the fact Sawyer was reading the Bad Twin book, and said "I didnt get to read the last ten pages" is a clue..

Mapquest is telling me that West 68th St. only goes up to the 199 block. It's possible that that address exists for East 68th St., but that would change the zip code to 10021.
Again, this is Mapquest, though, and not necessarily accurate. Does anyone in NYC know if this address exists in the real world?

I'm baaack. I took my Bad Twin walking tour of NYC, and I'll be posting some observations and pictures. But for now I wanted to let everyone know that Gary Troup's NY address
481 W. 68th St
NY, NY 10023
is a fictitious address.
Aggie was correct that 68th St dead-ends into Amsterdam Ave (the end of the 100 block). What isn't clear on most maps is that the far westward section of the street (what would be the 400 block) has been rebuilt as part of the Trump Place development here (http://www.cityrealty.com/sell/building.cr?name=Trump%20Place%20at%20120%20Rivers ide&bid=29947)
ETA: and the official Trump Place website here: http://www.trumpplace.com/
That section of 68th Street only provides access to the buildings' parking garages and service entrances. The main entrances to the building are on Riverside Boulevard (which is in itself a street added for the Trump Development, as is Freedom Place). Even if the entrances had street addresses, they would be in the low 400s rather than 481.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f308/tmiller9466/The%20BadTwin%20Tour/TrumpPlace.gif
If you google Trump Place you will find that it was the subject of protracted legal battles and general disgust by its Hell's Kitchen neighbors (but what Trump project isn't?)
Interestingly, at 320 W 66th Street (at the opposite end of the block from Martin Luther King High School) is this building:

This morning's Boston Globe newspaper has an ad. I don't have a scanner, but here's the text:
"A message from Hugh McIntyre, Director of Communications at the Hanso Foundation

I think there are two Hugh's -- a real one and a poser. This ad could easily be from the poser -- the one who called Scape. That is my little pet theory for now.

Interesting. 2 Alvars, 2 Hughs........hmmmm.
Pen, are you saying that "in-game" there could be two people posing as Hugh, or do you think that the "poser" is still just having fun and posted these ads as well. That would be extreme.
Penelope
05-09-06, 01:21 PM
IN GAME there are two Hugh's -- the hack of Hugh's voicemail was deliberate/intentional. We were meant to be confused by that call. Hugh is MIA, the real Hugh. See the CHARACTERS thread where there was an interesting find on Peter Thompson -- IMO they are all MIA. Other people are running Hanso -- the exec pictures are a facade to make us think its all nice and pretty there.

If the poser is unrelated to the game, I do not see him as the source of the newspaper ads. Advertising space in one newspaper can be expensive, let alone at least two (that we know of so far) in separate cities (Boston and Philadelphia). Hackers steal phone lines, not pay out money for fake ads.
Given simply the coordination required in printing multiple ads in multiple cities on the same day, I think a corporation must be behind these, such as ABC.

To me, a game clue is one which is disseminate-able to the population at large, i.e. newspaper ads, TV commercials, internet, spin-off books. Planting someone to return a call to a small handful of people would not work in this regard (especially since he didn't give out any truly valuable information), even if they were known to be part of a large web community, because it still does leave a large percentage of the population that play the game out of the loop. There are people, believe it or not :D, who have never heard of LOST-TV or some of the other forums.

LOL -- its in two Philly newspapers but we cannot find it in a NY one? Is there a Philadelphia connection they want us to dwell on -- besides the obvious PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT that we have already seen with the 10/28 date. I just find this intriguing.

I also posted this in the ALL_HANSO Thread:
We have page A4 in Boston Globe, A10 in Philadelphia Enquirer. How about the other papers/other cities? It's (really) a stretch, but maybe some connection/clue??
It is funny what turns up as significant. When in doubt just throw a DC-3 in there and you'll get Bointz!!, go figure.
LMAO, ralf !

Regarding this ad, it sure looks like a good example of spiral marketing. (Sells books and promotes the Lost Experience).
Also, the wording of the ad kinda shouts out that perhaps there are passages in the book that could provide clues to the unknown passwords at the website. Maybe ?
"Throughout the pages of "Bad Twin," readers have found numerous passages..."
Then, again in the next paragraph, the phrasing ties the book pages to the website by putting them in the same paragraph when there was no real need to do so (other than to isolate them and associate them, for us) ---
"The truth about The Hanso Foundation is available at www.TheHansoFoundation.org (http://www.thehansofoundation.org/) and not on the pages of Gary Troup's "Bad Twin.""
What better way to sell copies of a book than if you hint that there are valuable clues inside ?

I agree -- too many doubles to be a coincidence. But what does it mean? Are we going the clone route?

So no reports of the ad appearing elsewhere?
I can't believe yal cant find it in a NY paper....anyone on the west coast, LA perhaps found anything?
I'm gonna stop back in with the page number from the Phila Daily News (gotta nab it from a coworker;)) - just in case....
Ad is in San Fran Chronicle, page A8. if anyone is keeping track of this madness.

Okay, its on page 39 of the Phila Daily News. I'm starting to think that there is no real connection/clue to be gotten out of the pages on which the ad appeared.
Oh well, back to the drawing board....:p

I and sculpey both checked, and it's not in Washington Post... which I find strange. Also not in Washington Times. Why has the nation's capital been snubbed by ABC? We even wear socks out here! :p
Is it in the NY Times?

This is my theory on why certain media outlets will be used and others won't. (Don't be too harsh my first ARG. lol)
I think that when ABC set up the ARG they did their research and will use it in various ways. OWA is considered one but on a smaller scale. We just had the flight and also our frappr map. Of course we are not the only site, but I do think that is coming into play on where clues may be placed. If you have a huge fan population in Philly why waste your time putting an ad in the Milwaukee Journal IMO? So that the one person that is listed from Erin, WI that you know for sure is actively participating in the game from that area will notice the clue? (BTW I know this area well and have a loving family of cheese heads myself. Hi Sam! )
I have no idea overall where the largest concentration of people playing this is from but I would guess it will play an active role in the game. I know I have sent out a bunch of E-mails and did so right away to get our team site visible and out there. Many others are doing the same on this forum and elsewhere.
I believe that many outlets will be used so that everyone will be able to participate no matter their location. So no one is left out.
I also feel the producers of this ARG are making adjustments as they go along to fit the needs of the group they are playing to. Just my thoughts on why certain newspapers carried the Hanso ad. :)

Exactly -- the game has a skeletal outline -- but there WILL be adjustments as it is a work in progress, depending on how the players react to the clues. And they are watching us!! Which is why when we email, call, etc - we must remember to keep in character - TINAG!! :Headbang:

Thanks, Kim! Odd, but my thoughts are, that probably buying advertising space on the Washington Post & NY Times probably is a little more expensive, and that ABC skipped over them for that reason. :D

I agree with both of you Penelope and PandoraX. :)
I feel that ABC set up the ARG to keep it's fan base and use as a promotional tool as well but are trying to do so with a small fund base. Why they are relying on the fans so much here on these forums. Someone mentioned previously that this may be a testing ground for future projects. It will be interesting to see how this all evolves! I bet for us as well as them. lol

It could be that they're planning some other information for other areas. I'll keep a lookout.

For what it is worth, the ad does not appear in the Atlanta Journal & Constitution nor does it appear in the USA Today.
I looked back and didn't see this anywhere. The ad ran in the Chicago Sun-Times, pg. 28. Do we have page numbers for all of the ads? Can an advertiser request a certain page?
ETA: I saw Fozz had the Sun-Times listed on page 1. Sorry for the repeat.

It's on page A16 of the NY Times today. I had to cut it to scan it, hence the line in the middle. I was also so anxious that I tore the right side of the paper (no words were removed). Letters on left going down spell out FTP TMO TN ET. So I thought I was onto something (FTP://tmot.net). No go.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but in today's (5/10/06) Washington Post on page A7 there is a Hanso Foundation advertisement. It talks about the book the "Bad Twin" written by Gary Troup, and asking readers not to the believe the book which talks about the Hanso Foundation in a negative fashion. The news ad mentions a person by the name of Hugh Mcintyre as the public relations representative for the Hanso Foundation.
I'm assuming the same ad is probably in all the major city newspapers today...
I live in the Chicago area and was watching the bird flu movie last night (on ABC). I saw two Hanso Foundation commercials. It said something about "building a better tomorrow" and it gave the phone number. It was pretty cool....I would say this goes "above and beyond" for a TV show :)

I saw one of those as well. However, this time the website they gave out was www.sublymonal.com (http://www.sublymonal.com).

Hi klingdon. This same ad already appeared yesterday in about 8 national major city newspapers, and will continue to run today in others. You've stumbled upon what we like to call the Webmaze.
Everything related is located here: http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=70
Check out Truffula's Lost Webmaze and Travel Guide. It is stickied and provides a fairly quick but comprehensive summary.
There is a new rule that webmazish material stays in the webmaze subforum.
Again, Welcome!

Posting this here because it sounds to me like a "real" clue:
This is from the post-Finale podcast by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (about 14 minutes in).
Carlton: We are gonna be at ComiCon in San Diego in July, and we'll be having a panel there with some of the actors and Damon and me will be on the show. We'll be at ComiCon and...
Damon: And we'll say this. We will tease this. If you are following the Lost Experience or are a fan of it at all, this stuff that's right now going on with the Hanso Foundation, who's apparently very upset with us, you might wanna come to ComiCon because we are going to be making an official announcement about our feelings about the Hanso Foundation and their meddling in our show and their attempts to sort of "legally injunct" us...
(from there the conversation goes to Hugh McIntyre on Jimmy Kimmel comments. The important thing here is that, to me, ComiCon in San Diego in July now can be considered part of the Experience.)

Hehe aggie, I was just gonna post the same thing! :)
Now....who lives in/near SanDeigo and wants to go to comiccon?
Or more importantly, how are we gonna find out what goes down there to begin with? Aint-it-cool-News usually has spots from it, but I don't think they'd pay too much attention to this thing. Perhaps I'll email Harry just to make sure one of his guys gets the goods.
