The purpose of this thread is to keep us on the correct path through the WEBMAZE.
There will be LOTS of misinformation thrown at us along the way, deliberately attempting to throw us off of our goal - the TRUTH. ANSWERS.
So I've compiled a list of all websites that I've encountered so far in my journey through the Webmaze, and did extensive research into the backgrounds of each.
To save alot of space, I'm not gonna post the WhoIs and whatnot for each site, but know that I am fairly confident in my findings.

It's a fraud.
Widmore.com WHOIS info:
Whois Server: whois.wildwestdomains.com
Referral URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com
Name Server: CZ2.CHAPTERZEROHOSTING.COM
Name Server: CZ1.CHAPTERZEROHOSTING.COM
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 07-feb-2006
Creation Date: 07-feb-2006
Expiration Date: 07-feb-2007
It's hosted on Chapter Zero Hosting (http://chapterzerohosting.com/), a discount web host (their most expensive plan is $9 a month). Based on that alone I'd call it a fake.
Damon Lindelof's official Lost podcast on February 6 mentioned that the Widmore sign was an Easter egg and that Widmore would play a large role in program later on. It looks like someone snatched the domain as soon as he heard that.

^ Henry gale is mentioned
There are many ways for a website to assert it’s authenticity.
1)Direct link: If Oceanicflight815.com or TheHansoFoundation.org has a direct link to lostxyz.com, we should consider lostxyz.com to be official.
2)Endorsement: If someone official recommends a website it’s probably official. For example, Damon Lindelof plugged TheFuselage.com in an ABC podcast, thereby vouching for its authenticity.
3)Precognition: If a website has significant, specific information that only someone official would know, and that specific information is aired on the show or on an official website a significant time later, it’s probably an official site. For example, TheHansoFoundation.org domain was registered in July 2005, but the Hanso Foundation didn’t play a prominent role in Lost until Season 2 (which began late September). Also, Alvar’s “From the dawn of our species... (http://www.bigspaceship.com/archive/hanso/)” quote from the website was quoted in “The Hunting Party (http://lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Hunting_Party)” which aired mid-January . Precognition can be faked, so beware. There are several bogus Widmore websites even though Widmore isn’t a significant part of Lost yet. But since Damon Lindof alluded to Widmore’s future importance in the Feb. 6 podcast, several counterfeits have popped up, hoping to be around if/when Widmore emerges as a major force in the Lost mythos.
4)Webmaster/Web host Association: If one company registered, hosts, and maintains several official sites, then any site by that company appearing to be official probably is official. For example, since BigSpaceship.com ran three Lost websites (oceaniclfight815, oceanic-air, & thehansofoundation), if they host lostxyz.com we can assume that it is official. Likewise, if a new site is used a discount domain and a reistrar that no official site has ever used it's probably not official.
5)Originality: 98% of photographic material shown on an endorsed website is going to be original. ABC doesn’t need to use frames captured from television or images from old promo pictures. Any site that relies on recycled images is probably fake.
6)Obscurity: This is easy to fake so it will need to be combined with a bit of precognition. If the show mentions Jebediah Bonatillian’s Famous Strawberry Pudding, and you immediately go to Google find a website for Jebediah’s pudding, it’s more than likely official. This is when looking at the WHOIS (http://www.dnsstuff.com/) (registrar) information and a little detective work is important. If WHOIS tells you that Jebediah’s pudding site was registered several months ago, and you can’t Google other instances of that name on spoiler sites like Spolierfix (http://www.spoilerfix.com/lost.php), then it’s probably official.
Beware of fakes though. For example, if I was going to fake an official site right now (May 3) I’d do a website for Ms. Klugh’s Gourmet Cookies. It’d have pictures of actress April Grace (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0333318/) as Ms. Klugh. Why? Because Spoilerfix told me she’ll play Ms. Klugh on May 17. Internet cookie businesses sprout up and disappear daily so you can’t expect her to maintain that job for long. Plus, anybody could have tried their had that job at one point of their lives (there are hundreds of reasons to start your own business), so no matter what type of character she ends up being it wouldn’t be out of character.
At this point I have 5 official Lost websites:
ABC’s Website: http://lost.abc.com
The Fuselage: http://thefuselage.com
Oceanic Flight 815: http://oceanicflight815.com
The Hanso Foundation: http://thehansofoundation.org
Oceanic Airlines: http://oceanic-air.com
ABC’s Site (http://lost.abc.com/)
Of all the websites, this one is the most obviously official. ABC runs the site. However, I’m pretty sure that it’s not the the most control by TPTB. Let’s just say that I know some not-Lost-related higher-ups on another ABC show. If the Lost section is anything like the section for that show TPTB aren’t pulling that many strings. I'm often wrong though.
The Fuselage (http://thefuselage.com/)
This site boasts that it is, “The Official Site of the Creative Team Behind LOST; Sponsored by J.J. Abrams.” This claim is substantiated by Damon Lindelof during a podcast on ABC (http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/podcasts).
Oceanic Flight 815 (http://oceanicflight815.com/)
ABC aired a commercial for this site on television. It’s also run by bigspaceship.com, which also controlled thehansofoundation.org and oceanic-air.com during the summer of 2005.
The Hanso Foundation (http://thehansofoundation.org/)
Damon Lindelof talked about the site in a podcast, Bigspaceship claims it as part of their trinity of officially endorsed viral sites (viral sites are sites that generate publicity via word-of-mouth), Javi endorsed it on The Fuselage, it was around before Hanso was important, and Alvar’s quote from the website appeared on the show months later.
Oceanic Airlines (http://oceanic-air.com/)
I’ll admit that I thought this one looked to cheap to be official, but I was wrong. It’s part of bigspaceship’s summer of 2005 Lost project.
If anybody has more to add, or corrections for me, let me know and I'll edit this post.

I'm often wrong though.
ITA, the diary being the biggest example. Damon and/or Carleton or one of those guys mentioed in a podcast that they aren't writing the diary and they don't know where it's going. So stuff posted to this site may not have anything to do with the show or this game. Take it with a grain of salt.

I believe there is a thread in spinoffs (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17987)on these sites.
And I think the person who runs those sites posts here as stump. (If I remember correctly).

Hey Fraud Busters!
What is the word on this happening?
Oceanicairlines.com has changed, and the title of the webpage is "possibilities"
http://www.oceanicairlines.com/ (http://www.oceanicairlines.com/)
This was Clue # 12 http://thelostexperienceclues.blogsp...5/clue-12.html (http://thelostexperienceclues.blogspot.com/2006/05/clue-12.html)

The site's name has changed (recently it was the numbers and now it is possibilties) and over the past two weeks additional flashing dots have been being added...was two and then three in a line...then second row containing two...and today an additional row containing two was added....
The Experience probably won't be tied to just one site. Don't get too distracted by the Hanso Foundation!

With the recent changes made to www.widmoregroup.com (http://www.widmoregroup.com), I decided to do a whois...
VM, you're a sneaky one. ;)
I won't post VM's information on the board, but you all know how to run whois checks, so yeah.
So we can rule this one out I guess as being an official site in the game.

I don't know exactly where to put this, so I will put it here.
Some forums have indicated they believe that clues may be given out by forum members or moles. Trail Goat found an example of an alleged (but not believed mole) post and she discusses it here (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=568975&highlight=zeta#post568975).
GWS Anonymous, a poster at this forum has made several posts (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/search.php?searchid=142165) claiming to be a part of GWC.
Including this post (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=573863&postcount=700)

Look at the Joop image again. If you have low resolution, (1280x768) zoom in once and center. When the overlay appears (there are two - you want the one that is dark at the top) take a screen shot - paste into paint. Look at the lighter band in the forhead, you can make out a child (baby??) crying. Look on the right, you can see the waterfall. Now look to the left of the falls, you can make out an upper torso, one arm raised holding a torch. Flip the image upside down.....
The face will become clearer. Look at the waterfall again, where it is narrowest, look to the left and you will see Kate?? Look over the right side shoulder and you will see another face and above that the upper torso and head of another (Locke?) and to the right a torso with one arm extended.
On the left side of the face, just past the cheek you will see the nose and mouth of what may be a woman....

The Mythology of Lost
The mythology of LOST is brilliantly anchored in our real world. Each episode draws us in not only with compelling dramatic storylines but also (and maybe more importantly) with both familiar and obscure references to literature, philosophy, science, pop culture, and religion...just to name a few. The administrators of this website are not only LOST fans, we are also people who are intensely interested in how some of the thematic elements of LOST play out in each of our real lives. We have been most intrigued by the way the LOST producers/writers Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof have handled themes relating to faith & redemption. We have created this blog as a means of entering into a dialogue with our culture about these very things as we journey on this "LOST Experience" together. We have some great resources to offer people who are interested in real life application of redemptive themes. If nothing else, check it out and let us know what you think.

There has been alot of discussion about www.oceanicairlines.com (http://www.oceanicairlines.com)
As Team Leader of the ALL FRAUD Team, I'd like to say that this site is a FANSITE.
Here is the proof: (courtesy of hodag)
The domain was registered early.... Nov. 29, 2004. That makes it older than OceanicFlight815 (April 2005), oceanic-air.com (April 2005). amd thehansofoundation.org (July 2005). This gives the site some legitimacy...
HOWEVER it was registered by NameCheap.com. Just reading that name should sound warning bells in your head.
So, we look up the host at IP address 64.128.80.5 (networkredux.com) and see that they specialize in discount web hosting. $5.95 per month, or $20 per month of unlimited domains? That is *not* a host for business sites. There's no way it's legit. Don't waste your time on it.
So there you have it.

Truff

Okay I am confused. Couldn't any of these 'older' sites have been purchased recently by another buyer? I just don't want us ruling out sites that may be involved based on when they were created. Someone who has a better understanding of this (Ralf ;) ) maybe you can clear this up. I am just a little leery of debunking 'active' sites now in the event ABC has purchased them. I am unsure if that information would be a matter of public record, I am guessing it is somewhere.
rottenralf
05-06-06, 03:39 PM
Pene - If there is a change in registered owner then there is a link that shows up on the site I use, and gives the registration history. There were I think two sites that seemed to be registered to ABC but that was a red herring done by some sly old dog and they no longer say ABC. So it is doubtful ABC has purchased any sites from fans.

I was just snooping around for sites and found that www.preuss.net (http://www.preuss.net) is owned by M Stenzel. Paul Press wrote a book called Breaking Strain. Isn't M Stenzel behind the windmorelabs and mining sites? It could be a different person with the same name, since it was registered years ago. Just a heads up. :)

sorry if this is the wrong thread but has anyone heard anything about IMing a "Hanso815" because I tried it a bit ago and got a reply like "your mission is complete good work soldiers and hold for more updates to your current mission" and that future updates will come to those that have proven themselves worthy. Just thought id let you guys know.
I read several conversations people had with Hanso815. At first it seemed interesting, then it got a bit weird and very unlikely connected to the game.http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?p=969098#post969098
Has anyone here tried to IM this person? Looks suspicous but worth investigating.

From Gregg Nations, LOST Script Coordinator, in response to a question posted by number_22 at the fuselage.
number_22:
Which sites are legit ?
Hi Greeg, there currently is a lot of confusion about which sites are officially part of The Lost Experience and which are just fakes.
It was rumoured that the site http://thelostexperienceclues.blogspot.com/ was an ABC site, but they promote some sort of strange religious believes over there using the Lost Experience as a means to the end.
Furthermore, there are pages like www.widmore.com who seemingly are registered to ABC (at least that's what a whois lookup tells), but are most likely fakes.
So could you just tell us which sites apart from www.thehansofoundation.org are OFFICIALLY part of the LOST Experience (would save a lot of time and energy ! )

As far as I know, at this point on the Hanso site and the Gary Troup site are official Experience sites. As it goes on there will be a couple more, but for right now that's it.

Thanks for offering to help. I'm trying to communicate with someone but it is hard to get the right message through to the right person. This is where I'm hoping you can help.
I need you to confirm that you can help get my message out. Find a public place on the web (blog, personal site, anywhere) where you can post a link to this page: http://www.paik-heavy.com/slow-air-demo.php (http://www.paik-heavy.com/slow-air-demo.php)
It has to be a public site - a page that anyone can see.
If you can include the text "Slow Air Demo" with the link it will help. Click here (http://e2ma.net/go/267120533/212015/6135019/goto:http://www.paik-heavy.com/pht.php) to see an example of what I'm talking about.
The page you're linking to will redirect to another page - but please post this specific link: http://www.paik-heavy.com/slow-air-demo.php (http://www.paik-heavy.com/slow-air-demo.php)
Once you have posted your link, click on the manage your prefernces link below and provide me with the URL of the page where you posted the link. If you have figured out the code, include that too.
Once there are enough links I will be able to get my message out - hopefully in just a few days.

As I said in Post 1 - www.paik-heavy.com (http://www.paik-heavy.com) is NOT A PART OF THE LOST EXPERIENCE.
Think about it.
ABC puts enough into this to warrant taking out ads in major newspapers across the US, but wont pay for a decent website, or email server for the ARG? I highly doubt it.
MySpace, Free Blog sites, Free uploading sites, gmail/hotmail/yahoo etc - all point to ILLEGITIMACY.
Now, there is no harm in playing along - as long as you do NOT try to mix up info garnished from this with the OFFICIAL info (from Hanso site).
I checked out the myspace site, and it is piss poor. Come on, not even a pic from the Hanso site? No info from the Bio? Nothing? Oh, and "Tom" is still a friend. Thats another indication ;)
Well, I sent "Peter" a message on his myspace linking him here.
Now we see what happens next.

It is hosted through blogspot, which as an open blogging page (ala livejournal or myspace) and is under the wing of google.
It is not in any way associated with any of the sponsor pages. It was registered in June. If it WAS part of the ARG it would likely have been registered prior and set aside by TPTB at a much earlier date.

I did find a cool (clearly fan-made) Valenzetti blog in the comments, though!
http://findvalenzetti.blogspot.com/
Seems pretty shady to me. It's definitely not unheard of for free services like this to be utilized in professional ARGs, in fact it's really common, but TLE seems a bit more "corporate" than others. Blogspot is used often, and Google could make a great sponsor (as they were in the MI:3 game), but I think the people running the LOST ARG would make use of Blogspot's customizable options rather than a basic template if this were the case. The design doesn't look very flattering.
But still, you never know. rachelblake.com seems like a more likely place for her blog to be located, if you ask me. Maybe we'll hear something from DJ Dan soon.
I'm not sure if it makes any difference, as I don't know much about blogs, but each entry was posted b/w 2:55 and 2:56, June 2.
As Zamboni mentioned in the Monster.com thread, manipulating the date of the post on Blogspot is fairly simple. If this is "fake" then they probably changed it to make it seem like they registered it before the video was discovered.

My name is Cliff. Recently, my little sister has gone missing. (check it out here (http://www.haveyouseensarah.com/)) Now, you may be thinking why this concerns you, but I thought it might interest you that I think the Hanso Foundation had something to do with her disappearance. I have a hidden blog, kind of like yours. I put up a way to find it through the main site, but to speed things up, here is the link (http://www.haveyouseensarah.com/blog.php). Now, even if the fact that she was in their Vik Institute isn't enough, I have more. I have recieved information from the institute that does not work with the information the Hanso Foundation has provided, stuff like time and dates. And the executives that came and talked with us seemed very fishy to me. I don't know, I might be crazy. But I doubt it. Anyways, just thought you might want to know.

The haveyouseensarah.com website thats linked in the first link has an oceanic airlines ad...hmm...
Whois registers this website to a residential address in Dallas. Given that now even Rachel admits the "commercialization" of the ARG, I don't see them hiding addresses in residential areas on registration. Also, the domain was bought relatively recently, June 11. So I would call this non-ARG.

They're discussing this in rachels thread too...here's what I posted there...actually first let me ask this...Pan you may not remember this reference...but was this up on broadbandstories.com and someon managed to miraculously find it before it disappeared, like Hodag's great photo from THF last year?
anyway..here's my toughts after looking at the blog:
a few things make me say "fake" on this one...
1. The "B" word on an ABC sponsored site
2. Bad photoshop job on the photo, which was pulled from THF.org and blurred and dropped on a background.
3. Why would a member of THF board be using a blog to post about his travels and pursuit of this girl? That makes no sense. Rachel using a blog to get her message out makes sense. Cheever would be using memos and emails to mittlewerk. NOT airing "dirty laundry" on a blog.
just my 2 cents...

Unfortunately I haven't been monitoring the html page only the swf files for RDB, but looking at that screen shot, one thing that jumps out at me is that the cursor is right at the end of the url, like he just typed it in.
Guess we'll find out soon, but I agree that coarse language would probably not appear on a game site with Disney in charge.

3) They've never inserted an URL in the source code and then taken it out after so little time
4) It's easy to modify the code in notepad and take a screencap
Sorry for wasting your time! (I think)

Hey guys, what about www.hansoadoptions.org (http://www.hansoadoptions.org) ? It was mentioned in Rachel's comments on her most recent addition. Its kinda weird and I'm wondering if its fake, so Here You Go!

We have a thread set up in the Spinoff Subforum for HansoAdoptions.
It is fan made. Not part of the LE.
I shoulda added this when it first popped up. My bad :p
Adding to Post 1 now. :)

I've got another fake one you can add to this list.

I think it might be by the same person that attempted to fool us with the Dick Cheever blog.
probably add this one too

Okay...I don't really have time for skimming 11 pages of fraud thread, so I'll just post this.
http://www.defendinghanso.org (http://www.defendinghanso.org/)
This website was posted in the comments of Rachel Blake's blog. What ya'll think? Another Dick Cheever at blogspot, or something more concrete?
If this has already been found and proven false, I apologize for mucking up the thread.

I'll add it to.....THE LIST. ;)

This is the first I've seen it, but it's registered on GoDaddy.com according to Whois.sc, which suggests to me fake. It was also registered originally May 12th.

I'd probably add this to a "fake" list, simply because I can't see Penny Widmore discussing this sort of thing on a blog:
www.pennywidmore.blogspot.com/
BUT, it would be an interesting twist for the phone call Penny recieved in the season Finale to be in the year 2006...

The blog I would assume is fanmade.
But the site mentioned therein, I'm not sure about so I'm bringing it up here so we can validate this one way or the other.
www.widmorecorporation.com (http://www.widmorecorporation.com)
Registered May 3, 2006 and the registrant info is privacy protected.
The site doesn't exist technically. I get a "Problem loading page" error.
The only reason I'm bringing this up is that little red icon - the one that appeared on Hanso before it went live, and on the Persephone page?
Well, since I can't get the little thing to post on its own, here is a screencap -
http://img312.imageshack.us/img312/7956/widmorecorp11wx.jpg
There it is for this site.
My question is - does this icon have any bearing on the site itself?
Is this a connection to the Hanso site, or is it just kind of like a "default icon" for an inactive website?
Peace,
Truff

A person can set a custom icon for their site...meaning all the user has to do is create a graphic titled favicon.ico.
Not sure how it appears in a whois search though...unless it's pointed to in the code somehow...it bears watching, i guess. The IP doesn't match any of the other in-game sites that are hosted at THF.org's server...it resolves to a company in Amsterdam. http://www.ripe.net

No it's not legit, in the sense that it has nothing to do with Stephen King and is just there to sell T-Shirts..

Lets see....so far I can tell you this:
stophanso.com is not in-game WhoIs info (http://whois.domaintools.com/stophanso.com)
oceanicworldairlines is indeed a site of Vincent_Madison's and is a part of OWA
the darmaindustries site is definitely not in-game (nice to spell dHarma correctly :p)
And the Asian Hanso site is also not in-game (the WhoIs was also in Korean, but it actually listed a contact)
Will add these to the LIST in Post 1 :)
sorry to make it a double post but it wouldn't be recognised as well if it wasn't. is the oceanic-air site part of it? it was part of the initial pre season two webgame. and also I'd like to add the driveshaftband unofficial site to the list of nonrelateds

If you're referring to oceanicflight815.com then I don't know to be honest whether or not it will be used in TLE. They DO still link to THF on the mainpage, so you never know (and I think it would be a neat place to hide a glyph too ;)).
Sorry too, cause I forgot to add those from yesterday to Post 1.
What's the url for the driveshaftband site? I'll add that one too (but it will have to wait til this afternoon when I can get on a compy that doesnt crash when I try to open 2 browser windows ;))

Ah, you did mean oceanic-air.com :p
I don't think that will be used in TLE at all. In fact I don't think that site has done anything in quite some time ;)
I checked it again and it hasn't budged at all. however it would still be clever to put a glyph there.

Both of these are official...
http://www.oceanic-air.com/
http://www.oceanicflight815.com/ (try clicking the barcode at the bottom and typing theislandiswaiting)
They were both designed by http://www.bigspaceship.com/
If you look in their portfolio you'll see the LOST sites and all the other stuff they've done, not to be confused with BS1...
I actually tried to get in contact with them the other day, (A) to ask if there were any plans to update the site and (B) to correct a mistake they had regarding Kate's name...
They have her down as Kate Ryan, which is a mistake, she was Maggie Ryan during the bank robbery but her actual name is Kate Austen...
The other Oceanic site you listed is'nt official AFAIK, pretty sure it's not actually...
well, I just checked the oceanic world air site and it links to widmore group so its probably fake or widmore group is real.

Oceanic World Air is a fan run ARG/webgame by Vincent_Madison, as well as Widmore Group and a bunch more.
I'll go grab you a link to his sites discussion thread so you know which ones, Dag. :) I don't think all the sites he currently is using are there though, but most of them are.
ETA: Here (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12627) ya go.
thanks I'll keep an eye out for them and not check them out if I come accross them in a routine search for new or fake sites
I've also noticed that shade, stophanso, and hansoppression aren't listed. I'm not sure but I have a good idea that they're not part of the webgame

This is purely academic, but it's so rare I can contribute anything ;) :
Nozz-A-La is also in Mr. King's Kingdom Hospital series, as noted by Richard (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=876566&postcount=189) and myself (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=885274&postcount=197).
Dagolu, we have already looked into the sites you have mentioned pretty thouroughly, however, if it is not directly tied to the Lost Experience, it is discussed in the Spin-offs (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=71) sub-forum. Check it out sometime when you get a chance.
Hope that helps. :)
umm truff, something seriously wierd is with the oceanic flight 815 site. if you click on the light coming from the hatch, it leads you to the hanso foundation site (currently shut down) so perhaps you should include oceanicflight815 in the webgame list

I don't remember anyone talking about this yet, but does everybody remember those Hoffitt Films that are more than likely fan made? It was kinda a big deal that some of the images in the Hanso Industries film appeared to be originals of some of the images we saw during the Hanso Foundation Psychology Orientation video during the shutdown.
Well, they have posted 2 more videos on YouTube. About two weeks ago they posted one called The Island (http://youtube.com/watch?v=huvHc997Nxs)...nothing noteworthy there. I guess it's supposed to be LOST related, but it is BORING.
The newest one is about a week old and is called White Magic (http://youtube.com/watch?v=liGh3eqNiTA). At first it does not seem to really have anything to connect it to LOST, but at about the 4 minute mark, you see this image:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5568/d51qd7.th.jpg (http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?image=d51qd7.jpg)
and at about the 4:40 mark you see this image:
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/7052/d11co5.th.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=d11co5.jpg)
In the video, a human interacts with these images showing how the effects were created.
Since we have never had a definitive answer (that I can remember) about whether HoffittFilms is fan made or not, I decided to place this in the ALL-Fraud Thread. Please feel free to move if it should be someplace else. Just thought I would share the information.

I think someone once claimed that there were images used in both videos, but then backtracked when they realized they were just confusing the two videos.

guy at my work said he found a link on one of the LOST hanso foundation sites to what looks like a new hanso site. Maybe it hasn't been officially launched yet. Went to it and found a link to an "airline injury" lawyer at the top. Interesting. Is it legit? Any thoughts? It's got a link at the bottom to ABC and a legal statement from ABC and Disney. So should be legit I think.
