View Full Version : White/Black, Good/Evil Theory

We heard tonight that all the stuff on the other side of the island "The Black Rock" ship, the "Dark Territory," the black smoke that rises, etc., are where all the evil people and stuff on the island are. Is it safe to assume, then, that the people on the OTHER side of the island (our castaways) are the White or Good side? This sparks several thoughts in me.

Maybe this is something like that Star Trek episode where the crew all meet their alter egos from a parallel universe, and in addition to all having goatees, they're all evil. Maybe the people on the other (black) side of the island are the evil alter egos of the castaways.

It's a stretch, I know, but think about this. Suppose the island replicates people into good and bad, separates them, and then makes them fight? What if, for example, the island takes all the hatred and suffering a human being has inside, and basically makes a whole other person filled with those evil emotions. We know that the one thing linking all the castaways together is that they were all suffering in some very deep way.

It would then be safe to assume that this has happened in the past, as well. Think about the dead bodies that have been found. "Adam and Eve" had one black rock and one white rock in a pouch. The Nigerians were dressed as clergy (in black-and-white outfits). Maybe the people sporting both black AND white were considered the intermediaries or peacemakers (referees?) of the island, while the purely white folks and purely black folks fought each other. Maybe what Danielle is describing as her fellow teammates being infected with "the sickness" was actually the "black" alter egos of her teammates, who appeared to be "sick" to her because they had lost all their goodness and were pure evil, showing up trying to pass themselves off as her "white" teammates (kinda like the way Ethan tried to pretend he was "good" for a while before he revealed himself to be evil). Just like on any of the Reality TV shows that are on these days, Danielle whittled down the entire group of teammates until only she was left.

And maybe the hatch is the vessel by which the "black" alter egos are created. They're spawned inside the hatch, they have to grow until they're ready to be "born," and when they acquire enough negative energy to manifest themselves, they open up the hatch and come out to wreak terror. Remember when Locke was on top of the hatch, crying out in anguish, "Why are you doing this to me?" Maybe his feelings of despair created more negative energy to help his "black" alter ego grow (evidenced by the fact that the light immediately came on after he was so overcome with despair that he had to shout it out).

Admittedly, there's a lot of smoke here (not sure if it's white or black--by the way, am I the only one who was just DYING to hear Jack, after seeing the black smoke rising in the distance, say, "Hey, we have a new Pope!":rollin ). But I think there may be some fire. Any thoughts, reactions, additions, or corrections? I welcome them all.

So this would be sort of like a reverse clone? I don't think so, but your post gave me some other ideas.

I am getting a sinking feeling that Danielle is being used by the others as a pawn or decoy to get our survivors in the clutches of the others, so that perhaps they will give her back Alex or that they can take Claire's baby away from Claire and give him to Danielle as a sort of thank you for helping us.

It was also interesting that Danielle called the monster noises the island's security system which made me think of Locke's dad's compound with the security gate and all. Maybe Locke agreed to sell his soul for the use of his legs and in doing so he brought the plane to the island, so that Locke's father could manipulate the survivors in some way. Actually, I don't know the reason....just throwing out ideas

Two Star Trek shows are being alluded to from two different posts. One is where Kirk, McCoy, Scott, and Uhura transpose with evil counterparts and end up meeting Spock with a very smart goatee and a strange leer after inflicting torture on the transporter operator. The other involved a guy with one side of his face black and other white; he was seeking political asylum on the Enterprise. His nemesis, whose face was oppositely black and white, was none other than Frank Gorshin (Riddler of Batman fame) who has just died. This second episode may not have alluded to as specifically as I first thought but it fits the thread category anyway.

I dont think that LOST would put black and white sides as it were in traditional cozy roles. LOST would add irony and paradox and certainly mystery and confusion.

Also, I did comment to fellow episode watchers that the black smoke indicated a new pope had been elected. Although in the catholic church it is white smoke, I believe. Dont remember. I am not catholic. If that black and white smoke remains as correct, that is an example of the traditional cozy analogy that LOST perhaps might want to avoid. There is still so much discussion on who is actually good or bad on the show that irony and paradox still may have a chance.

I also tend to believe the "White as Good; Black as Bad" thing is a little too simplistic for the writers of this show. There may be a plot twist there sometime down the road. But while I was wondering why Sawyer was being so nice to everybody, it occurred to me that maybe that was the "alter ego" Sawyer, who instead of being a complete arse to everyone, is actually nice (like the South Park episode where the "Evil" Cartman from the parallel universe was actually nice :lol ).
