After watching Wed. 4/27 recap, I'm convinced more than ever now that all of those people are tortured, dead souls making peace before moving on.

Jack told Kate on the beach that they all died in the crash.

Boone died after he came to peace about a life long obsession with his sister. He was tormented in life, found peace and moved on.

Lock is next. He was tormented in life by not being able to do the things we've seen him do on the show. He's experienced his longing, made peace with his past, now it's time for him to move on.

Jack.... has struggled his entire life with an obsession about saving people. Now he's coming to realize that death is not as bad as he's always thought. He's coming to understand that death at times is as equally rewarding as life.

Sayid spent his life torturing and killing people. Now he's experienced being on the other side of that and he's having to face his demons as he learns about the suffering his actions bring on himself. When he's learned to fight the demons, repent and feel what he's done to so many others, he'll move on too.

As far as Ethan and the French woman, they're angels, helping everyone to find peace. Finding that peace takes extreme measures, it may look cruel to us, but it's actually helping tortured souls move on.

The monster? I'm not sure what that "was" but it weeded out the people who survived who had nothing to make peace with.

If you look at each character, they all have troubled pasts. They were tormented in life which means they would be (are) tormented souls in death. They're in transition, being helped along to find peace so that they can move on.

Oh I think that Locke has miles to go before he sleeps. In spite of what previews may suggest, he has just begun the next part of his journey. The peace that he may claim to find with the hatch/island/monster borders on the delusional. But you make a good point generally. Is death resolution? Or change? Symbolic? That may apply to some of the more obsessive characters but I dont know if the concept applies to everyone. Will have to see. One of the very few good things about Wednesday was Jack's quote. But did he mean that metaphorically? Hopefully we wont have to wait for Locke or the island to tell us. Maybe the next one too privy to the secrets is the next one to die? Who knows? I dont.

Welcome to the board. This is an interesting new take on this whole "purgatory" scenario...however, we have an "Official" thread dedicated to purgatory so i'm going to lock this puppy up and kindly ask you to continue discussion in there...below is the link.
