So, originally, when Locke said that Boone's death was a sacrifice that the island demanded, there was some validity to that. Had Boone not died, Locke would not have pounded on the hatch and would not have saved Desmond's life. This way, Locke could still reach the hatch and the #'s would eventually not be pressed, but Desmond would still be able to save the day. This way, the Losties don't all die, but miss widmore can find their signal. This theory would also have to mean that Locke was fulfilling his purpose by losing his way. The island wanted him to lose his faith. I don't know if this theory is true, but it seems like an interesting one to me.

Well, comparing the two times where Locke referred to Boone as a sacrifice, the first time proved heartless and a bit of a thumb-biting towards Jack, while the second was Locke realizing the futility of all his hatch-related activity. Also, I gained some insight into the original dream interpretation where the bloody Boone appeared. In fact, now we know that Locke clearly saw the Boone image as important and integral to what Locke interpreted as the Island's aims and wishes. Locke's imploring Boone to climb the cliff to investigate the drug plane---I am close to saying that Locke, regardless of how he spontaneously relost his ability to walk, had a specific plan to urge Boone to endanger himself, that Locke led Boone to the slaughter. This is all fine, because it made for great action and drama. Of course the real futility of all this season 1 conflict was season 2's far more pedestrian efforts regarding Locke and further quest towards enlightenment. Horribly mishandled.

Awesome, Pressman. I think you're right on with everything you said here. Boone's sacrifice also made the beechcraft fall and cover the pearl hatch until the time was right for Locke and Eko to find it. Also, if Locke hadn't lost use of his legs, it would've been him climbing into the plane instead of Boone, so in that way Boone saved Locke's life. I think you're right that Desmond was meant to save them all along, all of these details lead up to him turning the key.

Pretty much anything that happens from here on out in the story is because Boone died, otherwise desmond would've shot himself and the timer would've counted down and whatever would've happened. So anything Desmond does is basically because Boone's dead.

let's hope in a few years it doesn't cut to an autistic Boone looking at a snow globe. or have Boone wake up and see bobby in the shower and realise it was all a dream. or wake up next to Emily and complain about Japanese food.
