My take on Penny Widmore

I think Penny is going to be a very important character. It seems pretty clear to me that Henry Gale (real) was sent in order to try and find the island for Penny (Widmore Sponsor Balloon). After the detection of the Electromagnetic blah blah the Portuguese chaps phoned Penny and said "I think we've found it." They were talking about the island obviously. She is obviously looking for Desmond, perhaps how she knows he is on the island will be a later revelation. The real point here.. is that I think Penny Widmore will save the castaways.

Maybe and maybe not. She said "i have a lot of money desmond" earlier, before her dad died (because desmond was still trying to win the sail race from him). He wouldn't have approved of her using the money to find him then, but she still did. No reason for any difference this time.

joe: Yes and no. I think Fenry works for Messrs. Widmore and Paik. Penny may be collaborating, but if so, it's only to find Desmond. That last part I think you nailed on the head.

it remindes me of the Odyessy(i cant spell). the story where Odyuess goes off to war (Desmond's trip around the world). he tries to come back but he gets stuck on the island of the god, Clypso. where is spends years on the island before he is finally allowed to return. also Penny is short for Penelope, which is the wife of Odyessus, wait for him to return. this is all some crazy thing i thought of when i was in school. call me crazy!

quick speculation thrown out here before work, but i think with the Widmore/Dharma connection, that Mr. Widmore knows of The Island's existence. Being a very protective father, and obviously not a fan of his daughter Penelope interloping with Desmond (who seems to have done something quite shameful), created the boat race to suck Desmond into thinking he could get one back on the crooked father of the woman he loves. Widmore then somehow crashes Desmond on the island to "do away with him", and had Kelvin just so happen to show up on the beach and pick him up and proceed to train him as a dharma button-pusher.

somehow, over the course of the years that Desmond has been on the island, Penelope figures/finds out about the island and the magnetic discharges inherit there. she then stations two men in an observation station to locate the mysterious magnetic island that her father used to contain the one she truly loves.

so i think Penelope, who truly loves Desmond, has been searching for him ever since his boat went missing (cause we did see that she met up with him at the stadium and now knows of his boat race intentions), and knows that her father has something to do with this mysterious magnetic island and is keeping Desmond there. if this is all true, then this also makes the island an obviously set-up gig with employees and "reasons" for certain things to have happened. just as real life companies have other companies they delegate research too, maybe Widmore uses the island research of the Dharma group to further their monetary gain.

I thought the same thing at first, but really, when you think about it, it makes no sense. Why go through all that trouble of keeping Desmond on the island? If your as powerful as Widmore appears to be, why not just kill him? Sink his boat and be done with it. So, if Widmore didn't put Desmond on the island, then how did Penny figure out Desmond was there? that's the real question.
My theory is that she tracked the boat with GPS to a certain point. After the boat dissappered she looked into it and realized that the electromagnetic anomoly was supposdly in the same spot, and then set up the station to monitor for it. Not sure how she figured all that out, but she has the money for the research, that's for sure.
