i think its more of a preference the islands unknown host has for humans with clean slates... it may need to occupy their own minds, needing a blank slate, tabula rosa style...

( Ethans mind was probaly erased & altered over the years, leaving enough intact to still be somewhat an individual )
its like a new blank slate for it, like Charlie and Claire,
making them forget was not only a way to hide itself,
