Am I the only person that thinks TPTB drew up a few too many parellels between the above-mentioned characters for it to be taken as coincidental? List of similarities below:

Travels far and wide on his boat, often alone and getting washed up on strange islands
Has a wife called Penelope who waits faithfully for him to return home
Visits the home of Cerebus (blast door map)
Odysseus is a soldier
Visits the home of sun-god Helios, closely associated with ApolloOn some levels I feel I'm reading too much into this, but with the Greek and Roman influences on the island, I don't think this can be entirely dismissed.

I agree on the similarities between Desmond and Odysseus. Ithaca, his homeland was an island, he also visited the island of Circe, a powerful magician. And the foot statue had a Roman or Greek look. Although i can't find any references to people with four toes in Greek or Roman mythology, I think we will learn more about that in season 3. Finally, TPTB say that archeology will play an important role in the third season.
