Into this?

I think that if the monster is that black smoke stuff, i think the black smoke is a cloud of electro-magnetic metalic particles. I really don't know what the is...ANYWHO! I think the monster used it's magnetic powers to suck out all the iron in the pilot's blood(like in X-Men 2). This made the pilot into the bloody mess we see above!:detective

The monster can't be just smoke...It has to be some huge animal. Have you ever seen a cloud running through the jungle roaring and tearing trees apart? (LOST can't that sci-fi).
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I may be wrong but I believe TPTB said that what we've seen so far (smoke) is just part of the monster.

If smokey is simply a magnetic field how does that explain him reading Ecko's mind?

If it can tear up trees by the roots then people would be like the buzzing of flies to it...

Were you just quoting Ghostbusters 2?

well I don't think that a "whole bunch of monkeys" or a "pissed off giraffe" could tear down entire trees or read minds or literally drain the blood out of you (I don't see any big gashes or cuts on the pilot) perhaps the monster uses electromagnets to rip very small pieces of metal through the trees or your body.

Some points:

Not only is the body intact, but his clothing is barely even ruffled. The shirt is nearly completely tucked, no rips, nothing.

His pants are devoid of blood, only the upper body is bloody; all we see on the pants is what appears to be either mud or wet sand. This couldn't have come from the cockpit obviously, so was he drug to the location?

Whatever did that to the pilot was fairly precise wtih it's attack.

Whatever it is I have a feeling that smokey is one of the things that will be left completely or partially unexplained when it's all said and done.

I'm glad someone brought this up. There really is no way that the black smoke could be the same thing that was knocking down tree and ripping them out of the ground. I've heard that this black smoke is some kind of security device, if so why would it be destroying the island like that?

yeah I just don't seeing jack walking into camp and saying to everyone. "hey guys! the monster was actually a magical transmutated thing that came about from the remains of the wierd 4 towed statue when it was destroied by hanso to help start the oceanic-dharma-hanso-widmore-cookies domination of the wierd parallel world purgatory bremuda's twin craphole mystery jungle-of-death island that we are currently stranded on and other people including the crew of the black rock, a balloonist, a world racer and a group of actor-bandit-fisheating-whispering-invisible-dead-alive-others-hostiles-and or people who lived here before us. yeah thats what the monster is."

For effect, to scare people off I guess, like an alarm...

In The 23rd Psalm The Black Smoke came out very shortly after some trees were ripped from the ground, it even came from the same direction and made the same sound...

If I can suspend my disbelief enough to have flying clouds of black smoke then I can suspend it enough to give that smoke the ability to rip up trees and people at will, no idea how it can do that but at the moment I think that these things...

The Destroyer of Trees
The Black Smoke
The big "WHOOOOOOO" noise
The Monster

...are all the same thing.

It only takes one scene or one line of dialogue to rip an assumption asunder though

The big "WHOOOOOOO" noise

I love that sound by the way. It made me check IMDB immediatly to see if Ben Burtt was working on the show.

That body in the tree is a dummy. The pilot is alive.

Of course, how else is JJ gonna shoehorn Greg Grunberg into the show?

:)

I've read that it's him playing Gerald DeGroot but, cool as that would be, it'd be asking for trouble having the same actor play two different roles, especially with this show...

Why after 60 days on the island, the monster has only attacked and killed the pilot. Sure it scared a few and drug Locke in a hole, but only hurt the pilot on day one or two. Was the monster pissed off because someone from the front of the plane survived?

it IS all magnetic.

the trees are thrust up using something called potential wells
the blood WAS pulled from his body due to its iron content

& the scanning is done by using potentials between electrons

Unless Gerald DeGroot chartered and piloted the plane himself. LOL Man, that would get confusing...

Remember that it was powerful enough to wrap around Locke's leg and drag him (in Exodus). If it can do that, I think it could certainly dismember things, or even pick up objects and throw them,

I think the smoke monster is completey mechanical (hence the noises) and electomagnetic properties allow it to appear as smoke; bending light ala "Predator". I personally envision it as a mechanical arm type thing very similar to the "claw" that pulls Neo out of the disposal lake after he is "woken up" in the first Matrix movie. I do think it acts on it's own, however, as a sentient being.
