View Full Version : his name was robert?
i was having my own mini-marathon of lost today while avoiding the superbowl, and i noticed something i thought a bit odd. in ep 9 with danielle; she refers to her "love" as "robert". but she's french, and the french pronunciation of robert is "ro-BEAR". that seems to imply that robert wasn't french. was her expedition group multi-national? or were they canadian? (ethan claimed to be canadian...)
does it mean anything? i dunno....

What's a sobe?

In death, a member of Project Mayhem has a name.
His name, is Robert Paulson.
His name is Robert Paulson.
His name is Robert Paulson!
His name is Robert Paulson!
His name is Robert Paulson!
What kind of fry babies? Guppies?
What's a sobe?
the quote is a remark my best friend made at a party-
a sobe is a drink-

Great contribution as usual, Chewie.
And good point, Lach. On top of that specific point, her French accent just... didn't seem French at all. But I guess that could be because she spoke so many languages.

Alex, I believe, is also not a French name. The French is Alec.
Another member of the expedition was named Brendan (transcripts of the distress message said that he'd taken "the keys" to the black rock or something like that). And the counter on the distress signal was in English.
It does sound like an international expedition and not a bad case of Wandering Accent Syndrome.

I wondered about the names Robert and Alex myself. Alex is Russian. (I specifically named my son Alex because of my husband's Russian heritage.) Maybe Danielle is actually French Canadian, and Robert is English Canadian? (Or whatever you call it.) I happen to be drinking a Sobe right now myself. (Although I know your Sobe was yesterday...)

Here's the thing...
The actress who plays Danielle (Mira Furlan) is not French, but Romanian (I believe) so her accent is a bit off. However, we have not been told explicitly that Danielle is French - she could have been named Danielle regardless of her nationality (I should know, I'm Mexican yet my name is French).
Furthermore, I believe that Robert, Danielle's husband, could have been British, Canadian, Irish, a US citizen... in other words, not French, and therefore she could have been pronouncing his name as he would have.
My vote is for a multiple ethnicity expedition... multinational expedition... well, whatever.

I thought that she had called him Alain first? Then she called him Robert. Maybe not, just going on memory.

Hurley asked Ethan where he was from, his reply was Ontario then Hurley just presumed he was Canadian. Maybe he is from Ontario California. Danielle's accent is more French(Parisian)not the slang(French) that is spoken in Canada.

Good call on Danielle possibly not being French. I was thinking this myself since my mother's maiden name was Rousseau, there's actually a huge Rousseau population that moved from France to Canada and then down to NH and Mass (in the french-canadian migration in the 1910's and 1920's :\ ).

Damn you, walkingcarpet23, you beat me to it by a good day.
In any case, Mira Furlan is Croatian. Well, I'm 95% sure on that, and I'm not gonna cheat and look her up on IMDB.
Robert is definitely ROH-bair en Francaise, but maybe, just maybe, Alex is a female name in France. Alec is definitely the Franch male countepart.
On a side note, I'm surprised Sayid doesn't speak French, seeing how more Iraqis speak that than English. Well, at least until 2003 or so.

What other languages does Danielle speak?

Was that sarcasm Oven, or do you actually enjoy my posts that add absolutely nothing to the topic at hand?

What other languages does Danielle speak? I heard American, English, French, Russian, German, Swahili, Tamil, Portuguese, Italian, Danish, and Greek.
At least I think so.

And isnt Ethan canadian? Or at least thats what he said. So, they were probably on the same expedition, and Danielle would be canadian too.

Ethan told Hurley that he was Canadian, yes. That doesn't make it so, though - most if not all of the characters have lied, and Ethan has more reasons to lie to Hurley than most.
Also, Ethan and Danielle could have been in the same scientific expedition regardless of their nationalities - we have not established that it was a Canadian or a French or a multinational/international, or even private, expedition.

Let's not assume Ethan in Canadian...as Rooster pointed out, Ethan said he was from Ontario and then Hurley said something about Canada (which Ethan didn't acknowledge one way or the other.)
He could be from CA...Ontario is nearby Palm Springs...
Thanks, Chance, for the list of languages-I had no idea!
