View Full Version : Is the Monster a TRAIN?

I was watching the Pilot Episode with the closed captioning on and when the "monster" was knocking down the trees, someone in the background says: "that sounds familiar", a second person then asks: "Where do you live?", the first person then says: "The Bronx". I was thinking about it and the only thing I could think of was a train or subway in the Bronx. In fact, the "monster" kind of made a sound like a train whistle. Maybe the monster is some sort of train with a cloaking device? I know this doesn't explain some of the other things the monster has done and may sound far fetched, but you never know.

It's probably Astrotrain from the Transformers.

I think that was the writers attempt at humor. Also, It is known as the Bronx Zoo sometimes so I think that was the joke.

I didn't think it was very funny, I just thought "What the Hell?". It was strange because it didn't show the women having this conversation, it was only heard in the background.

Wouldn't that require, like, tracks or something?

It was Rose that said it and at the time it seemed rather mysterious.

But now I think it simply reminded her of Bernard in the morning after his prunes and bran muffin.

Gross.

Wasn't this one of the things that was speculated to be "What we missed in the pilot"?

ETA: Not the prunes and bran muffin, the noise sounding familiar to Rose...:)

Maybe it has tracks like a bulldozer or is underground like a subway? I dunno, just speculating.

Well I never said I personally thought it was funny just that I think that was the attempt.

I found a spoilerish picture of "The Monster". (Don't let the pleasant appearance fool you.)

This also explains the clouds of black smoke...

i know its been talked about before, here, but the monster in my opinion did make mechanical sounds like a roller coaster getting pulled to the top of the hill.
maybe in season three we find out this whole place is an amusement park and smokie is the ride. thats why locke wanted jack to let him go.

(fyi the second half of this post is a joke)

Could the monster be the black horse that Kate saw? Maybe it can transform itself. The horse was never mentioned again was it?

That's right! So maybe the trees that Eko was marking weren't the one's that he ended up chopping down to make the church. Maybe he was marking them, so that he could later run straight at them and transport into the train's waiting station....

Good question.:rolleyez:

Maybe Rose is remembering the sound of the automatic seats at Yankee Stadium clacking up when the crowds have gone.

I collect monster sound threads, but since the big goon hasn't made any sounds all season, all I'm left with is mocking those who can't use the search function! :rolleyez:

Just an FYI...I posted some info about the monster sound here. (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=823498&postcount=111), which may be considered spoiler, since it's from the UK S2 DVD release bonus features, so be warned...but it's spoiler tagged, so it's all good, I think.

I live in a largely concrete and pavement area, so loud noises tend to carry. Last week I left a window open when I went to bed. I was woken up by the garbage truck, and in that still half-asleep state, I couldn't help but notice how many sounds were similar to our monster. It was really freakish.

It's been stated what they modeled the sound after, I'll go find the link and post it here.

ETA: here. (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=54877)

Namely:

Audio Commentary on 'The 23rd Psalm'
Executive Producers Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse and Bryan Burk
This commentary has a more laid back tone than the track for 'Man of Science, Man of Faith', but it's still packed with information. Damon and Carlton discuss in depth how much the casting of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje informed Eko's character and just how much the actor and producers colaborate. They also mention how Eko's stick and the "mister" preceeding his name were Adewale's idea and they praise his performance in this episode. Also discussed extensively is this episode's theme of redemption, with both Charlie and Eko being at different stages of the same quest as the episode ends. Damon spends a while pointing out a lot of the ties this episode has to 'Deus Ex Machina' (like the similarities in the Locke/Boone relationship to the one that forms between Charlie and Eko) and also to '?'. Bryan Burk tells a fascinating tale about coming up with the distinctive sounds for the "smoke monster" back when the pilot episode was being made (the fast ch-ch-ch-ch-ch noise the smoke makes is actually the sound of the receipt machine of a new york city taxi cab. This is revealed to be the reason the monster sounded familiar to Rose, who is from the Bronx.). Also discussed is the visual effects that created the smoke monster, and how the episode twists at the end to focus on

This thread may deserve a award nomination because it is fricken hilarious if you start from the begining. This is one of the most humorous sentences I have read this since joining.

It's been stated what they modeled the sound after, I'll go find the link and post it here.

Just one to point out that the chittering noise is primarily based around 'smokey', but the initial boom/thunder/screeching/winch pulling/tree falling/thumbing/woooing noises are more related to what is being referred as the 'train' sound which might only be partially related to smokie. Though the 'bronx' connection seems to have been solved. Thanks to Nancy Drew and her faithful Hardy Boy following. What I wanna know is why TPTB didn't offer a scavenger hunt for sounds, in which people guess the correct mystery sound? It could have been offered in the Web Maze (I mean these sounds are just narrative ploys in which the mechanics of the island are modelled on - similar to how the sound of God Zilla was an 'iron gate' opening in the studio lot that it was filmed). Hmmmmm, interesting.....

So, I guess that answers the question.. the monster is actually a taxi cab with a cloaking device.

I think the banyan trees are too intricate for it to navigate. Other trees are solid so it can split them or push them over.
