View Full Version : Guest Stars Question

I'm curious, why if ABC does not like when certain spoilers get "leaked", then why do they publically disclose the lists of guest starts for an episode before it actually airs? Is there some rule requiring them to list the complete cast before hand, that I'm not aware of. Obviously they would then be limited by the impact of a surprise guest appearance. I mean just look at the impact it would have if they suddenly listed Harold P as a guest star for an ep. Sure most of it would be speculation, but at the same time, just knowing he would be showing up in that episode would automatically take away most of the shock value. Just wondering why they don't just keep the cast list a secret until after the ep airs?
I know this isn't a spoiler, but it's a long off season, and I would really appreciate some factual input on this.
Thanks.

if you know its not a spoiler, and you know it wont get more attention in this forum because it is not that busy, than why the hell would you go through with posting it anyways.
Are you all there mentally?

To those of you who attacked the original poster in this thread, what is wrong with you.
In the world we live in today there is a marked lack of civility.
Both of you who responded epitomize that fact.

It's a long summer and his post didn't hurt anything.

Does anyone know the answer to the original question? I've wondered about that, too.
Also, the post is related to a spoiler topic, so this forum seems like a worthy choice for a home.

Well, TPTB choose certain material to be leaked.....well, rather, they give clues about upcoming episodes. They do that through the Podcast and interviews with people like Ausiello and Kristin (don't even get me started). As for why they list the guest stars prior to the episode coming out? That's a good question. I guess to build suspense/discussion about the upcoming episode? Any free publicity you can get from TPTB standpoint is the best kind of publicity. They drop a guest stars name, and then let the boards/Internet run with it. Most of the time it stays purely speculation until the episode airs and then we find out.
Then again, maybe there's something in the inner workings of Hollywood that forces them to list guest stars. Perhaps it's something between the networks and the actors union (SAG? - Screen Actors Guild)? It would be nice to know for sure, but unless there are some actors running around here, we may not know for sure. Then again, one of the redshirts is posting in the Redshirts and Recurring Characters forum, so she may know. I'll drop a PM to a couple of people and see if I can find an answer.

I was waiting for it to be moved before I answered (or gave my opinion). I definitely didn't post anything that would lead anyone to believe I was being nasty or mean. I apologize if that was how it seemed. As far as "attacking" the poster, I did not do that, obviously.
"Find a meaningful purpose in life...."?
I have a career. You post here too.
Everyone needs to just calm down and get back to the question at hand. I do not want to lock this thread, especially since I've asked for help in answering the original question.
Whether this thread belongs here or not is not germane to the situation. For now it will stay here as casting discussion is considered spoilerish and, at this point, we don't know what types of answers we're going to get. If all turns out to be non-spoilerish, I'll move it to GD. Until then, it stays here.
Thanks everyone.

This would be a good podcast question ...... are they doing anymore podcasts or do we have to wait until Season 3?

They have said there will be more Podcasts this summer. I think they start back up late June or early July.

So, I wonder what those podcasts will encompass....
Its hard for me to think of, but I'm sure most of them will be bogged down in tons of inane banter, which is generally amusing.

Why?
Take a deep breath, reread your post and reread the original post.
Was there a legitimate question being answered? Yes or No?
Did you respond to that question? Yes or No?
Did you attack the person posting the question? Yes or No?
From what I can read, there is a legitimate question. You didn't respond to that question. Finally, you attacked the poster.
The intent of your response was overwhelmingly to deprecate the poster, you didn't even try to enlighten them with a response to their question. As a word of note, there is no one in life that is of greater means of existence than another whereby they are permitted through that existence to extol upon another their superiority. We all start the same and we all end the same, we all have the same abilities and the same flaws of existence. The trick in life is balancing your abilities and flaws and realizing the greater strength comes not in what you achieve but in what you help others to achieve.
There are some things you should choose not to say, rather than say them. Learn what not to say.

From the podcast, it sounded like some stuff for the Webmaze thing but they'll likely clear up some pressing questions too. I would hope.

Wow... apparently this has turned into "common courtesy" thread.
I think that it's very much a good thing if we try to be polite to each other, but I also understand the flip side and some people do post kind of unnecessary things, so...
Let's just try to be nice even to those we don't agree with :D
As for the question at hand... maybe they are just courteous enough to spoil us. If you don't want to be spoiled, you won't be reading the cast list anyway.

I think a) it's a good question, which I've wondered about; b) the moment someone said "for example Harold P is only going to guest star next year" or "Michael Emerson will be a regular" it would be spoiler forum material.
I've tried some searches and can't find anything. I will posit
a) If someone reads through the entire contract of the Screen Actors' Guild, it may be in there somewhere, or
b) They do all shows that way, and it hadn't occurred to them is was spoilerific. I suppose most such appearances are given away in the previews, anyhow.
...We all hope...:wave2:
:D Yeah...I think they're going to save the really big ones for next season. But like, will we see a back story for Danielle might be on the agenda.

Some of us have been pulling for that backstory since S1! I just hope she isn't one of the loose strings they forget to tie up sometime in the near future.

That would be the cruelest of misdeeds to be committed. She is too much of a character to be put aside and forgotten.

No.
Being all of 17 you have yet to come to the day when you realize that youth is wasted on the young. In that, during these years when there is so much energy, so much ability, and so much drive that it is wasted trying to be a voice heard in a crowded room, rather than listening to and understanding what is being said.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a voice heard, but in time you'll understand that it is far more important to listen.

them.........................you shouldn't waste your time responding. davester88 began it all with his "are you all there mentally" comment and then has the temerity to attack me for responding to his post with a little vitriol. He doesn't like it, he ought not dish it out. Really, that's pretty much all there is to say about it. Note to davester88: the focus of the correctness or incorrectness of your argument is often lost for you as soon as you begin spewing obscenity, for the impropriety of the use of obscenity becomes the focus.
I don't know see you. I liked seeing them get all Yoda on the kid. It was well worth my time!

I disagree.
Davester88 never used a single word of profanity or an obscenity. Not to mention you feel the need to attack Davester88.
I strongly recommend you go back and reread your post, as well as the posts before it. Ask yourself if you feel you were the model of civility in either of your posts. Whether you were fair or even accurate.

Them................my advice to you would be to read post #14.
The obscenity was directed at me.
A mod responded to his post and advised "tired of telling you about obscenity."
I was defending you.
As for my civility............I think I was more than civil. I started this whole mess as a result of his lack of civility with respect to the original post.
In my last post to you, I did not attack you or him...simply stated that if he didn't like my post he ought to consider how he made the original poster feel.

Fair and accurate.
Fair. You said it yourself. He attacked the original poster.
Accurate. He directed obscenity at me and was chastised by a mod.

No, if you reread the comments, Leuthen instructs Davester88 to stop name calling. It wasn't an obscenity, I know I quoted what he said and when Leuthen failed to catch my quote of it I edited my post to remove it.
He never said one obscenity. What he said was even laughable at how childish it was but it wasn't an obscenity.
I am not defending him either. However your suggestion that he did something that he didn't is wrong.

Well, fine. I am big enough to admit that I made an assumption. He wasn't cursing. He was name-calling.
davester88...............I am sorry that I chastised you for cursing, when in fact, you weren't.
them........are you satisfied now? You know, I am sorry that I bothered to simply point out a general lack of civility in davester88's response to the first poster.
Somehow, I end up being the bad guy.
Like I said before, in the future, I'll just stay out of it. If the lack of civility shown people on this board drives them away, then I guess only those with the thickest of skins will still be around.
Again, I am sorry I got involved. Everyone, flame away!

Be careful, someone might construe that as an unfair attack.
Oh well, I'm staying out of it.

you guys say i am childish
how about the two of you arguing over how bad my comments were

What it boils down to is that in the entire time that davester88 has been a member of this forum, I've never seen him address anyone by their name. I've warned him about this before via PM but since that didn't seem to work, now I'm going public with it.
All I'm asking for is for him to extend the same courtesy that many extend him.
