This is going to be out there a bit.
In hearing the DJDan podcast today, and reading Rachel's blog, I started to think that things were sounding familiar. I did a little digging, and found this...

When the history of the American space program is finally written, no figure will stand out quite like John Whiteside Parsons. Remarkably handsome, dashing and brilliant, 'Jack' Parsons was one of the founders of the experimental rocket research group at Cal Tech and the group's seven acre Arroyo Seco testing facility would eventually become Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA's rocket design center. Werner von Braun claimed it was the self-taught Parsons, not himself, who was the true father of the American space program for his contribution to the development of solid rocket fuel. Although Parsons has been memorialized with a statue at JPL and has had a crater on the dark side of the moon named in his honor, his story remains shrouded in mystery – for what is little known about this legend of aerospace engineering is that Parsons was an avid practitioner of the occult sciences, and for several years, Aleister Crowley's hand-picked leader of the US branch of the Ordo Templi Orientis, the Southern California-based Agape´ Lodge.
In one of the most celebrated feats in magickal history, Parsons and pre-Dianetics L. Ron Hubbard (whose role is too complicated to describe in this short essay) performed The Babalon Working, a daring attempt to shatter the boundaries of time and space and intended to bring about, in Parsons own words, "love, understanding, and Dionysian freedom [ . . .] the necessary counterbalance or correspondence to the manifestation of Horus."
In its initial stages, The Babalon Working was intended to attract an 'elemental' to serve as a partner for Parsons' elaborate sex magick rituals. The method employed was that of the solo 'VIII Degree' working of the O.T.O, the quasi-Masonic organization reformulated by Crowley in the earlier part of the century in accordance with his 'Do What Thou Wilt' mythos of Thelema. Parsons used his 'magickal wand' to whip up a vortex of energy so the elemental would be summoned.
Apparently, it worked. In a letter to Crowley dated February 23, 1946, Parsons exclaimed "I have my elemental! She turned up one night after the conclusion of the Operation, and has been with me since."
The elemental was a green-eyed, flaming redhead named Marjorie Cameron, (later of Kenneth Anger's Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome film, an artist of some reknown and a primary force in the New Age 'Goddess' movement). Cameron was only too happy to participate in Parson's sex magick and now Parsons could get down to the real business of the Babalon Working: the birthing of a 'moonchild' or homunculus. The operation was formulated to open an interdimensional doorway, rolling out the red carpet for the appearance of the goddess Babalon in human form, employing the Enochian Calls [angelic language] of Elizabethan magus John Dee and the attraction of the sex force of the duo's copulation to this end.
As Paul Rydeen points out in his extended essay Jack Parsons and the Fall of Babalon:
"The purpose of Parson's operation has been underemphasized. He sought to produce a magickal child who would be a product of her environment rather than of her heredity. Crowley himself describes the Moonchild in just these terms. The Babalon Working itself was preparation for what was to come: a Thelemic messiah."
To wit: Babalon incarnate as a living female, the Scarlet Woman as consort to the Antichrist, bride of the Beast 666. In effect, Parsons also claimed the mantle of Antichrist for himself, as the magickal heir of Crowley prophesied in Liber AL: 'The child of thy bowels, he shall behold them [the mysteries of the Apocalypse]. Expect him not from the East, nor from the West, for from no expected house cometh that child.' Without the Scarlet Woman, the Antichrist cannot make his manifestation, the eschatological formula must first be complete. In whiter words, with the magickal rites of the Babalon Working, it was Parson's goal to bring on the Apocalypse.
I don't want this to sound like I think any of that is in-game. What my mind went to was the idea of the possibility that the Apocolypse will come when the Valenzeti Equation is no longer being run.
The U.N., sometime after the Cuban Missile Crisis (Oct. 1962) hires a brilliant young mathematician by the name of Valenzeti. He is charged with the task of divining an equation the will predict the extinction of the human race. Sometime in 1963, Valenzeti disappears, presumed dead in a plane crash.
The idea in my mind is that the equation was stumbled upon, with no idea what the potential power of it is, or the reality of what the find was. For instance, in the movie Pi, it is discovered that the numerical value of PI is actually the full name of God, forbidden to the ears of man. What if Valenzeti stumbled upon an equation that unravels reality? What if he discovered that by ceasing working on the equation, bad things began to happen?
Sound familiar? Our Hurley discovered what happens when “the numbers” are thought to be used. And he got them from Lenny, a possible savant in a mental institution, repeating the numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 out loud…could he have only been reciting pieces of the equation?
Anyway. OK. So Alvar Hanso is known to have ties to Nazi Germany and the U.N. (The Nazi's were, in themselves, an occult orginaization. It is written that Hitler received direction from an "invisible being" from another plane, instructions to bring about an End Times scenario.) Hanso could have been present when young Valenzeti gives his oral presentation of the equation to the U.N. Hanso becomes intrigued, as he has been long in the business of selling destruction: what better weapon to have than an equation that will cause the world to end, if it is not continually being computated, a kind of magick spell…
Hanso kidnaps Valenzeti, and has him institutionalized and watched. Through mind control drugs, he keeps the mathematician focused on one thing: the equation. Alvar runs into a roadblock, however. He can’t keep a human being awake, healthy, or alive long enough to figure out how to use this equation. This leads to three involved projects: Life Extension, Mathematical Forecasting Initiative and the Institute for Genomic Advancement. The MFI is given the task of creating an automated method for calculating the equation on an endless loop; it is computerized. The computer recognizes 6 hieroglyphs, and 6 numbers. It is located on a remote island, possibly one of several (for backup), and heavily defended by cutting edge, and often bizarre, technology. These stations are run by individuals recruited from psychological and parapsychological experiments. The Life Extension Project is tasked to find a way to keep a person mentally aware into their old age. The Institute for Genomic Advancement is set up to see if the cloning of the mathematician would create a being capable of understanding the equation.
The drug treatments and isolation cause Valenzeti to withdrawal from reality. He, in effect, becomes an autistic savant. The Foundation then realizes that they do not need him, alone, for the continuation of the equation. They can introduce the equation to other mathematically gifted savants, housing them in their own hospitals. Masked as memory tests, the “doctors” would have the savants sit at computer screens for round the clock shifts, repeatedly entering the symbol numbers.
The Foundation is trying any means possible to prolong the equation, till such a time as they deem humanity unfit for continued existence. One of the methods they developed was the use of Egyptian hieroglyphs in communicating with great apes. By showing the apes a series of symbols representing the numbers inherent to the equation, they let the apes keep up the calculations, much like the savants. What they didn’t count on was the effect it would have on the apes, themselves. They noticed that many were living for a longer span than usual; they incorporated these findings into the Life Extension Project, for further study.
During this time is when the DHARMA Initiative was created, in an effort to devise the easiest, most efficient method for teaching the numbers/symbology to primates and savants. The Foundation discovered that they could maximize the potential of the primate brain through the combined use of mathematics, symbolism and auditory input. Information learned in this way was more readily accessible to the learner, and easier to manipulate and combine with future information.
An aside:
I believe that Mittlewerk may be the “bad twin” of Alvar Hanso. Hanso began to change his views on the military industrial complex, and his complicity in the deaths of millions of people through his arms dealing. Specifically, Hanso wanted to share the equation with the world. He realized the danger in having this power concentrated in the hands of a few. Mittlewerk could not stand for this. As the “heir apparent”, he was enraged as Alvar seemed to be trying to give away “the family” fortune. Much like is outlined in the book “Bad Twin”, when the lines of inheritance are revealed, and Zander’s desire to give the fortune away, as he began to see it as evil.
