View Full Version : Ausiello *new but (some) old news

TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello just spoke to “Lost” co-showrunner Carlton Cuse about season three. Some highlights:
* The producers are looking at 3.1-3.6 as a mini-series.
* 2.1 didn’t deal with the raft survivors, and now it looks like some of the regulars will not appear in 3.1, which will focus on Jack, Kate and Sawyer.
* The show is casting one new male and two new females. One of the females is intended to serve as a romantic interest for Jack.
* “The inter-relationship between the outside world and the island will be something that will be a part of Season 3.”
* Both the smoke monster and the polar bear will be part of the new season.
* Series co-creator J.J. Abrams “is going to co-write the premiere with [co-creator Damon Lindelof], and ou[r] hope is he will direct Episode 7, which will be the first episode of the new pod.”
* There appear to be no immediate plans to follow up on what becomes of Michael and Walt. But a growth spurts in Michael David Kelly is “something which we've accounted for,” says Cuse. (Perhaps, as with “Alias,” the story will at some point jump ahead a couple years?)

So, we find out how the outside world is connected to island? Or do we get to see something else in the outside world?
TPTB still want Jack to have a love interest?
And if they jump ahead, that is just lame.

This would be the afore-mentioned Juliet?

Just an educated guess, but we'll probably see scenes of Penny in the outside world trying to find the island and dealing with whatever has kept it secret (DHARMA/Hanso/and perhaps her father).

I liked the "simultaneous" storytelling of the first few episodes of last season.
I was a tad confused at first

Another new love interest for Jack? Hope the actress doesn't get any DUIs, I mean, hope the character's fate isn't suddenly sealed by the demands of the "storyline".
We shall see no more of Walt for a while (because he's growing)? No, let's wait six more months, until his voice has entered the Land of No Return.

We find out one of Walt's special powers is the ability to make himself grow very rapidly. Soon he will be the size of the 4-toed statue.
see you in the next life

Also Damon says emphatically that the smoke and monster are one and the seam, if there remained any question about that.

Saw that coming.
I recommend reading the article, if you want spoilers. There's a lot more than what AICN sussed out of it. I found these two bits the most interesting:
Re: Locke - "John Locke will be a very different person in Season 3. All of his questions and his doubts and his uncertainty have been answered. In fact, the button did mean something. And there was something at stake. And I think that will bring about a change in that character."
So Locke definitely lives! Unless by "different", Cuse means "dead".
Re: what happened to the pilot - "That was the monster. He wasn't really devoured. When we saw Greg Grunberg he was hanging 70 feet in the air on a tree branch. He was dead, but he wasn't swallowed. The smoke creature and the monster are one and the same."

I would guess that after the mini series in the fall , when it comes back for the long haul in Feb there will have been a big jump ahead to a future year.

I hear we're finally going to get some romance on the show this season. It's the season of sex!
Cuse: Finally, yes! I wouldn't call it the season of sex, but I will say that romance will play a much more active part of the show this year.... We actually meant to get to it last year. We didn't really get to the romance as fast as we thought we were going to. So this year that's definitely on [our] agenda.

From Spoilerfix:
Episode 3.01: Title Unknown
Airdate: October 4, 2006
http://spoilerfix.com/images/new.gif 07/21 - During an interview Carlton Cuse revealed: We pick up where we left off, but obviously there are different stories on different parts of the island, and, you know, we will get to all of them in the first few episodes. But like last year, we didn't deal with the raft survivors in the first episode. Not everything is going to be answered in the first episode. But the captivity story [with Jack, Kate and Sawyer] will definitely be addressed. Source: The Ausiello Report (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Ausiello/AusielloReport/)

For some reason, I found this the funniest part of the interview:
Cuse: "People are asking what happened to the polar bear, so we will be doing some polar-bear stories."

The polar bear is dead! What is the mystery? If there were more running around, the Losties would have seen it by now.

Asked if Kate will finally "get with" someone this season, Cuse replied, "Very soon, very soon. We promise," with Lindelof elaborating that, "Within the first six episodes, she will officially be making her selection."
Aren't we then led to believe that Kate chooses Sawyer? If they are casting for a love interest for Jack, that would imply that Kate is no longer involved with him. And who then is the love interest - one of the Others possibly?

here's a guess I thought of.
The two girls are:
Penny
and the girl that has been mentioned looking at a chained up Jack, umm Juliet? Correct me if im wrong.
And maybe the man could quite possibily be Him?

Your'e right. Now I remember! I was thinking that scene with Michael, Walt & Locke happened before Sawyer shot the bear.

Translation, AL was so hated the entire romance angle fell apart because we couldn't risk the loss of any more viewers by featuring her in very many episodes.

Now, now Khan, we can't relate everything back to AL can we? There's a special place on the board for AL hating. :) You should know...you helped create it. ;)

Yes I did and still do my part there. But this is not about my personal dislike of the character.
They uncharacteristically put out so much information about the big romantic angles they had planned involving Jack, AL, Kate and Sawyer something had to have happened for that to be scraped.
If fact the rest of the things they said about her character in S2 was drastically reduced or shelved altogether. It had to be the public's reaction to her because they wouldn't have went so far out on a limb, poured thousands into publicity only to turn around and have her sit on the beach.
I think they still want to continue thier original idea only with a new female character. It wouldn't surprise me if the new one becomes the leader while the rest are away, fullfiling thier plan for AL to be a challenge to Jack as well as being a love interest.

Or... maybe Kate chooses "the new male".
Or... one of the "two new females".
Now, if it's the same female that servers as a "romantic interest for Jack", that would be a nice love triangle. That's what I call interesting writing! ;)

Interesting. I think you have a valid point there. I took your earlier AL comments out of context, sorry about that. :)
I suppose if you dislike a character enough it "invalidates" everything you might have to say about that character in relation to the show, I should be used to that by now, skip pithy remarks and go into infinite detail to prove I have a point.

Oh, I love your dislike of AL as she pertains to the LOST storyline. You're one of the triad of posters who finally helped me understand why those who dislike her, dislike her. Granted, it took a while, but eventually the lightbulb came on for me. :)
I don't require infinite detail, as I know where to find where you've given it already. For those who don't, check out the Michelle Rodriguez/Ana-Lucia forum here on the board and you'll discover it for yourself as well.

Penny has already been cast, so it's not her.
I THINK the only casting news we've heard so far is that there will be a Juliet, and that the Bralizian guy has been cast (probably in the role of "hot male", but I doubt it's Him, too young).
So that's leaves one female role out there.....

Dunno if its the same "Ask" but I spotted ths
Ausiello: ER's Elizabeth Mitchell landed one of the roles, but the other one is still being cast. Word is it's down to two actresses, one of whom readers of this column are quite familiar with, and the other, well, not so much — although I still get a ton of questions from clueless readers wondering when her recently axed TV show is returning.
That second actress, could it be Eliza Dushku? (Please please please please please please please please please please...)
That second actress, could it be Eliza Dushku? (Please please please please please please please please please please...)
Rumors are out there based upon comments made by Natasha Henstridge that it is her. Her show was just cancelled. And she would be a more mature love interest for Jack. But I love Eliza Dushku. Would be great if it were her, but I doubt it.
