Q. How will you retain viewers, since the show will air for just six weeks this fall and then go on hiatus until February?
A The first six episodes are going to be very high octane. The notion that we are ending a mini-season in six hours has ramped up our storytelling. We will unwind out of the cliffhanger that we set up in the finale last year -- the capture of Kate , Jack, and Sawyer -- and focus on why the ``others" chose them. We will begin to learn more about the ``others" and who they are and what their society is like.
Q. Then what?
A Each season of ``Lost" has its own distinctive quality. Last year the show was all about the hatch. It was very interior, a little dark and more intense. This year the focus is more vibrant, more action oriented, more romance oriented.
Q. What's the story behind the new characters played by Rodrigo Santoro and Elizabeth Mitchell?
A When new characters come onto the show, part of the surprise is seeing how they are revealed. I will say that we expect to announce a third new female character. We haven't finished casting yet.
Q. Was Harold Perrineau (the actor who plays Michael) released from his contract?
A Our plan is to get back to Michael's story. I don't want to confirm anything.
Q. Is Sun really pregnant? Some message boards say the pregnancy test had been doctored.
A You can go crazy with Internet rumors. She is pregnant.
Q. Did Desmond die?
A Henry Ian Cusick is now a regular on the show, which means that Desmond probably didn't die when he turned the fail-safe key. Michael Emerson [Henry Gale] is also going to be a regular on the show this year.
Q. What about the speculation that time is not passing on the island at the same rate as the outside world?
A That is a very interesting theory. I can't confirm or deny it.
Q. Will the smoke monster and the polar bear be back?
A They will both be back this season. We've got some fun stories to tell with them.
Q. When do you start production for season three?
A We start shooting on Monday.
Q. Is it true that you've planned through season five and then would like to quit?
A "Lost" is a story that is meant to end. ABC is in the business of making money. This is a collision of artistic desire and the practical desire of running a successful business. We would love to announce that we are ending the show after season five. Then we could dish out our mythology in an orderly way. Instead we will have to see. We are all hired hands. It's ABC's show.
Carlton Cuse, an executive producer of ABC's ``Lost," is in town this week with his wife, Christiane. Together they plan to bicycle 192 miles in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, the annual fund-raiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where Christiane was successfully treated for lymphoma 19 years ago. We caught up with the producer before his ride to talk about the upcoming third season of "Lost."

Let’s hope Cuse doesn’t get ‘Lost’ in race!

Fear not, “Lost” fans, Terry O’Quinn’s obsessed numbers-cruncher will return to ABC’s ratings-busting drama next season, executive producer Carlton Cuse told the Track yesterday.
Locke, who in a season-ending cliffhanger was last seen blowing up along with fellow castaways Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), will live to see season three.
“He’s not dead. (Producer) Damon Lindelof and I would be pretty stupid if we killed off John Locke,” Cuse told the Track on his way to last night’s Red Sox-Indians game at Fenway. “He is definitely one of the most popular characters.
But what about Locke’s fellow hatch dwellers? Well, we do know Mr. Eko will be coming down for breakfast. As for Desmond, Internet buzz has suggested he also survives. Phew.
The Harvard University grad - who flew into Boston with his wife Christiane yesterday to take part in tomorrow’s 192-mile Pan-Mass Challenge benefit bike race - also spilled that die-hard fans can look forward to the announcement of a third addition to the show’s growing cast as early as next week.
“There are going to be three new characters this season. The third new edition is a female character that we’re still in the process of casting,” said the Watertown and Cambridge homey, naming the already announced Rodrigo Santoro and Elizabeth Mitchell as the first two.
“Damon and I find it the most engaging to write about the character’s relationships and surprise the audience about who they are,” explained Cuse, who refused to divulge any juicy tidbits about the new “Lost”ies. “There is just something incredibly compelling about that first flash back!”
But even if you miss the first episodes of the new season, Cuse strongly suggests tuning into the sixth installment.
“It’s going to be a real high-octane cliff hanger,” he insisted. “Where last year the story was more methodological, this year the series will be more action- and adventure-oriented. And there’s going to be more romance - only this time around, when people have sex, they won’t necessarily disappear like they have in the past!”
As for tomorrow’s big bike-a-thon, Cuse said that he and Christiane, a cancer survivor, were “as ready as they’ll ever be,” to pedal in support of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund.
The Tinseltown twosome will make the trek from Sturbridge to Provincetown with Dana Farber doc Lee Nadler, who cured Christiane of lymphoma 20 years ago. Nadler also was Red Sox prez Larry Lucchino’s cancer doc, so they all will be riding with the Red Sox folks.
Good thing - we wouldn’t want Carlton and Christiane to get Lost!
