ETA: There seems to be some confusion as to what qualifies a food to be in this thread, so I will clarify.

EXTINCT: A food or beverage that is no longer produced, period. Finding remaining consumable samples are virtually impossible.
RARE: A food or beverage that is still produced, but is difficult to find, for some odd reason. Location seems to be the most popular obstacle.
ENDANGERED: A food or beverage that is (a) still being made, but is so low in demand that it is soon to be discontinued (b) is presently in the process of being discontinued (c) has been discontinued for some time but there is still enough stock of it left to be reasonably obtainable

Things that do NOT qualify: animal or animal products that are extinct or endangered. Examples: dinosaur meat, dodo bird eggs, bald eagles, etc...

I can think of many former favorite cereals that are extinct. Too many to name. I recently was watching an 80's movie, where someone was eating Mr. T cereal and I was like OMG, I used to eat that! I forgot all about that one.

I can't find Waffle Crisp anymore. :(

Atomic Fireball jawbreakers are pretty hard to find in my locale.

Do they still make Jolt Cola? This stuff was huge fad when I was in high school.

I miss Pepsi Blue. That was good stuff!!

I still see all three in the store in my area. I haven't bought any in a long time, though.

Did you know there used to be a fourth General Mills "monster" cereal featuring a werewolf? ETA: It was called "Fruit Brute." Sometime after it was discontinued, it was brought back under a new name and new monster "Yummy Mummy" but it didn't last either.

Yeah, I have seen it recently. I didn't like it the last time I bought some though. They changed it.

pinwheels? Where they called pinwheels?

I just miss that they screwed with the Trix recipe and Trix don't taste the same anymore.

Neither do Mountain Bars.

And there was this great lemongrass soda I got at the natural food store that I can't find anymore.

What the heck is / was Pepsi Blue?

Being a Coca-Cola man myself, I don't think you want to know. However, for those who are curious, here you go (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepsi_Blue).

And that's from someone who once actually consumed Crystal Pepsi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Pepsi). *shudder*

Nothing ever tastes like it used to when we were kids. I think it's cause we have adult tastebuds now.
;)

I miss Rice Krispies Treats cereal, and pudding pops.

I remember Mom making mashed potatoes out of a box: no I do not miss that stuff.

But I do miss canned spinach, because I was gonna be Popeye's friend!

Can't stomach it now.

They are similar to pinwheels, only no chocolate. :)

Being a video game nerd, I was a huge fan of the short-lived Nintendo cereal. It was basically Trix in shapes that vaguely resembled Mario and Link (very vaguely). But it came in two bags per box, one for Mario and one for Zelda. The Mario half was red and blue, and the Zelda half was green and yellow.

I used to eat it while watching the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

"Swing your arms from side to side/ Come on, it's time to go/ Do the Mario!"

Mallo candy bars. I just can't find them anymore in my area. My mom used to buy them when I was little as a treat. They were like Reeses cups but had marshmallow inside instead of PB. Yum they were so good!

Leuthen - I too drank Crystal Pepsi :) (I actually liked it!)

Slightly off-topic, perhaps, but the Chicago City Council recently passed a resolution outlawing foie gras in restaurants. Something about abusing the animals in order to make their livers extra large. I have a friend who tried to go to every restaurant in the city that served it before the onset date.

Does anyone remember Marathon Candy Bars - It was sort of like a braid with chocolate & caramel - but it was big. We had one neighbor who always gave them out at Halloween which was cool because most give out the fun size candy bars.

They still make Cookie Crisp - in fact I saw a new type - Chocolate/Chocolate Chip - I never thought much of that cereal.

I long for the days when Cerals were not PC - we had Sugar Smacks; Super Sugar Crisp, etc..

There are a couple brands at WholeFoods store. Reed's is a brand off the top of my head. It's in health food stores.

Anybody old enough to remember the short lived Freaky's cereal?

A little bit off topic...........

Things I can't get here near Charlotte, NC, that I used to be able to get where I lived near Detroit, MI. Some of these things are still available and others I'm not sure. Darn, I sure miss these things.

Drinks: Squirt soda (pop), Vernors soda, DeKypers (sp?) Apple Schnapps.

Food: White Castle hamburgers, Jets pizza, Coney Islands

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

I love White Castle hamburgers and their onion chips. There is one right up the street from me and now they sell them in the grocery. Want me to send you some? :) (make mine with cheese please)

I know we're not supposed to include it, but I hear Armour potted meat has suffered an economic downturn. God only knows why...but talk about a travesty... beef tripe and partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue products disappearing from the super market shelves.. I don't know if I can take it.

The town I grew up in had that in it's community fallout shelters.

I bet it's still there.

I bet it's still good.

Sorry! You're right. I skimmed the title and started reading posts. Most seemed to be only foods that were no longer being produced, so by the time I posted, I had mutated the subject (in my mind) into what "I" thought it should be! LOL

I always thought Vernors was specifically just a Michigan thing. Also, Trader Joe's has Ginger Beer, too.

The only way I can get Atomic Fireballs around my area are at Sams club in a 5 pound tub. I bought one earlier this year and am about a quarter of the way through it.

Remember the gum cigarettes that had powder on it, and then you blew into it to make "smoke", and you thought you were all cool and grown up? Not that I miss them, but we know we'll never ever see those again, lol.

haha FitLoL!! I totally got in trouble with those when I was a kid! My dad thought I was really smoking and grabbed me up by the arm and I was like - "whaaaaaaa????" and when he realized it was a real cig - he still screamed at me and took the box away anyway. haha!! funny they came in a box that looked like Lucky Strike cigs.

I LOVE fireballs! When I was a kid we used to go to this place in Moultenborough, New Hampshire called The Old Country Store. They had all kinds of penny candy and I used to load up on fireballs, candy cigarettes, and candy necklaces. *finishes reminiscing*

So much foody goodness to discuss...

Mandi -- I remember Gatorade Gum, but do you remember Meadowlark Lemon gum? Sourest stuff I ever tasted.

Pants -- Where exactly are you from? And what's so bad about foie gras? I mean, you accept a guy's tongue in your mouth but you won't eat that? And seriously, can't a guy can't make mention of a meat-ful media report without the veggie police breaking down doors? Careful you, I've got Pop Rocks here at home with me, so watch out.

Freckles -- King Vitamin! My second favorite, only to Captain Crunch! Why I let a Captain outrank a King, I'm not sure; I was a maverick back then.
