View Full Version : So, it's over...
What did you think?
From the Hanso hacks to the often tedious tracking of those video fragments, a lot of time was spent by decidated LOST fans on this forum and others. How has the LOST Experience worn away at your social life? Did you love the interactivity and the storyline, or did you loathe it? And what does the future hold for Ms. Blake and Mr. Marxooch...err...Dan?
Tell it all!

honestly, after all that, all the hope of something great, your name says it all:sadwalk:
I thought it was a pleasant way to spend the summer. I think TPTB were off base in their estimation of our intellect and creativity, but...I have read many books, and seen many movies, in which I have guessed the end loooong before it came. It didn't diminish my enjoyment, and neither did this.
While it was not techically an ARG..
While the best part was THF.org and it was downhill from there...
While the acting wasn't exactly top notch...
While there are handfuls of loose ends that weren't cleaned up...
While they bored a big part of their audience in the hunt for glyphs...
While they neglected to come to Boston and hand out some Apollos there...
It still gave me (and all of us) something to do over the break that was lost related and to keep us busy. So in the end I guess I'm happy with it and what it was.

I really enjoyed it. It kept us entertained, we learned some extras about LOST, and most made a lot of good friends. Personally, i am hoping the last video was a bit of a set up for another round, say during the first hiatus....
overall, i must say Bravo, Well-done, and Thank you.

I think that phase one with Persephone was the bomb ! and that the glyphs killed the "FARG"
I hope we see more of DJ Dan and can anyone tell me who Johnny is (in real life) ?!

this ARG was a wonderful way to spend some boring summer time. I wish that there were more answers revealed than what there was...but what are ya gonna do. They have to keep some stuff for next year!

honestly...I'm left feeling a little....blah...over the whole thing.
Rv, I'm with you, I was here and met friends before this ever started so it didnt make my summer at all.
I thought it was sort of blah myself. But I also think that the answers we got are intriguing. If that in fact was AH, then we know that he is not on Craphole Island (but could be in 2004--stupid timeline!!!!) circa 2006.
We also learned that AH has blood taken/tested regularly. Similar to other actions we have seen on the island. I assume it will tie together in what they are testing for in the blood. Or what they are trying to immunize/strengthen the blood against. So maybe AH is "him" and has been on the island, but my bet now is strongly that it is not. The whole housebound routine could be BS to throw us off, but I doubt it. Regardless, all the blood work means he was part of something, or exposed to something similar to what is going on on Craphole Island.
So I think we got a few hints towards the direction of Lost, but they are remote and vague. I think blood, or bloodlines, will be a key part of this whole Lost mystery now. What else should we expect, though.
Overall, ARG gets a B-. Entertaining at times, delivers the mystery at the end, but really dragged through the middle. Like a foreign film.

I'm left completely underwhelmed, but I don't think final judgement can be made until we have a chance to see how some of this info does (or doesn't) play out on the show. If it is integrated well, I'll remember it positively. If they abandon most of it, it'll seem like a boring diversion.
I still believe that we are not done. Whether this continues now, or over the next hiatus, I don't think we are finished.

I wonder if they're going to pick up where they left off after the 6 weeks of s3 that they're going to show...after all, I think the show is going to be on a 13 week hiatus...just enough time for acts five and six! :P

I loved it. Regardless of the plot holes or TPTB mistakes, it was something to do over the summer. Something Lost related too.
However, I absolutely love DJ Dan, and feel that they must continue podcasts, especially with Johnny. Even if it's just podcasts that have no real purpose. They really should keep doing those, because that was just amazing.

I really hope there is something else left to come with this ARG. I don't think we are quite done yet either. However, when it comes to another ARG...
Unfortunately, as of Sept. 2, 2006, there were no plans in the works to do another ARG. This was the question that I asked Javi during the Lost Panel at Dragon Con in Atlanta and his response was that there is definately enough mythology left that could be fleshed out through another ARG, but that ultimately it would be up to the sponsors like Jeep, Sprite, Monster, and Verison. Apparently this ARG was not cheep, and unless the sponsors believe this ARG was a good investment for them, they will not be willing to finance another one and it will be hard to convince other sponsors to follow suit.
Personally, I would LOVE another ARG during the winter hiatus. When I asked Javi about the possibility of another ARG, his face lit up, so I think that he would also enjoy that. I just hope that we, as the players of TLE, have done enough to show those sponsors that this ARG was a good investment. However, there has been ALOT of complaints about the advertising and there were many people who refused to participate in the the ARG because of the sponsorship/advertising, so only time will tell.
Perhaps they could do a smaller version that would be the equivalent of just ACTS I & II. That was my favorite part of the ARG anyway. Besides the fact that I quickly lost interest in glyph hunting, those Apollo Bars must have cost a fortune to produce and distribute across the world.

I comepletly agree about DJ Dan. Even if we are never blessed with another ARG to satisfy our hunger for Lost, I think it would be awesome to have a weekly podcast from DJ Dan where he discusses the mysterious happenings on the show LOST. They don't even have to make sence, just be entertaining (and Javi is definately entertaining).
DJ Dan was my favorite part of this arg but Sunday's podcast sure seemed rushed to me, they had so long to flesh it out but seemed to be done off the cuff. The previous one was hard to live up to I guess.

Like a fight between a superhero and an arch-villain, no way this is the end....
I'm gonna agree.
This ain't over by a long shot.
I think what's happening now is being done to re-establish the destroyed 4th wall. It will be silent for a while, so we can thoroughly enjoy 6 uninterrupted weeks of NEW LOST. But a 13 week hiatus - perfect time to squeeze in another Act (or two).
I don't think the sponsors pulled out and forced an early end to this. I think the sponsors had a hand in the quick ending, but not cause they wanted out, cause they wanted it to go on for longer (ie - the 13 week hiatus and maybe even next summer too) because it was very successful to them (somehow). I also think that they are going to bring in a professional ARG team ( please be the cloudmakers, please be the cloudmakers ) for the next phase.
Don't expect any big press release from ABC saying "The LOST Experience is back!" because the Alternate Reality has already been established and we are in the thick of it.
Mittelwerk is running loose and he has that virus and is intent on using it. He means to kill 30% of us, lets not forget that.
What Mittelwerk is gonna be looking for now is a way to mass produce and distribute this virus into the world's populus. It will take time, but we've seen the resources he has, and I fear he will eventually resurface - so we're gonna have to be on our guard and on the lookout.
Now what do I think about what we did?
IT WAS AWESOME!!! :D
Yeah, there were slow points, but if there was no TLE, it would've been REEEEEEALLY slow for a LOOOOOOONG time, and this summer's hiatus would've seemed like an ETERNITY.
Some of my personal highlights:
- The start of the game on May 2 with the Hanso site reopening and the UK phone number/password
- Learning what the DHARMA acronym stands for
- Life Extension Hack/SHUTDOWN/End of Act 1 - that was almost too intense. I YELLED at my computer when I saw it for the first time :p
- finding HansoExposed.com a month early by reverse IPing the Hanso site
- learning a little history about Magnus Hanso and the Black Rock
- watching all the reports from ComicCon come in live
- getting an Apollo Bar
- seeing the completed Sri Lanka video and learning the meaning of the NUMBERS
And now a message to "Dr." Thomas Werner Mittelwerk:
HEY YOU!
OUR EYES ARE OPEN!
WE KNOW THE TRUTH!
IT ISN'T GOING TO BE AS EASY AS YOU THINK!
YEAH, IT WAS JUST A BATTLE, BUT I GUARANTEE WE'RE ALSO GONNA WIN THE WAR AGAINST YOU, YOU EVIL, EVIL MAN.
BRING IT ON!
Nicely put, Truff! What you said!

Hey truff,
Who are the "cloudmakers"?
I would get you links and stuff, but I'm at work and only have a minute here....
The cloudmakers were the puppetmasters behind "the Beast" the ARG that went along with the movie "A.I.".
I only played a little of it, but apparently it was the best ARG done so far that I've heard about; and these cloudmakers are the best in the ARG biz.
They must have been good because I still read about AI's ARG. I think and hope that the next one will be better if they learn from these faux pas.
THe AI game was friggin brilliant. I think thats why I had a harder time getting into this one.....it was just much different.
There were puzzles involved that werent solved for days.... That was the biggest issue that I had with TLE... Everything was solved waaaaay before most people even saw a puzzle...and the puzzles that werent easily figured out, were not logically answered.
Google cloudmakers....there are a few good sites with descriptions of it. Being as it was the first of its kind, and operated in a period of time when most people really had no idea what the computers and software were capable of, they were able to creat puzzles of the sort that had never been seen before. I would really like it if those guys did another one, especially if it was Lost related.
PLEASE!!!!
Wow I just read the wikipedia entry on "The Beast" and I'm so sad I didn't know about it at the time. Something like that must cost an absolute fortune for whoever is putting it on.
To be able to create the ARG literally just as it's being figured out and incorporating the people solving it into it seems like an insanely time consuming task given the number of people who participated. Plus, if there are sponsors for the ARG, trying to incorporate them into it seamlessly as well? I'm very impressed.
Would it even be possible to do this with Lost? I feel like there were a ton more people going along with the Lost ARG at its peak way back compared to how many may have done "The Game" just by comparing the supposed final post count of that game compared to the current post counts of TLE forums. With this amount of people, and with increased knowledge of ARG methods and clue solving resources, could you make it hard enough, yet still do-able, to entertain this many people?

"The Beast" was a wonderful game and the only other ARG I've done besides TLE. I remember seeing commercials for the movie, A.I. and seeing the addy, www.jeaninesalla.com (http://www.jeaninesalla.com) and wondering what the heck that was all about it. The storyline was intriguing and mysterious. Essentially, we were helping a girl named Laia to find out who had killed her best friend Evan on a boat. The culpirt turned out to be an AI who had her program changed.
Gee, that was over five years ago! Time sure does fly!
AI was great yes :D , oh well this is not the complaints thread but yeah TLE lacked the G in ARG , it was an Alternate Reality but there was NO game :p
As for ARG's there are many being played right now some for more than 2 years , so there is plenty of ideas for TLE 2 ( if that happens ) , maybe someone must tell them to check the unfunction forums ;)
Can someone please help me with this little problem:
I've been puzzled by the explanation of the DHARMA acronym, i.e. "Department of Heuristics and Research on Material Applications". It doesn't make much sense to me.
Firstly, it sounds as something made up to match an existing word/acronym, not the other way round. I guess that's exactly what the writers did but, still, they could've done a better job finding suitable words.
Furthermore, what on earth does "Material Applications" mean? It doesn't really make sense to me. Then again, English is not my first language so I may be missing something obvious. Please enlighten me.
Thanks (and Namaste),

from what i understand, "Heuristics" has to do with discovery, and then "Material Applications" would mean how to use whatever is discovered.
does that help?

Here's a "real world" example of heuristics, because looking at a dictionary definition tells you nothing useful.
Some PC virus checkers use heuristics to determine if a file on your machine might be a virus. Normally, a virus checker simply scans the file, looking for a particular pattern in it that identifies it as a virus. That's a brute-force pattern matching approach. A heuristic approach uses certain rules to determine if a file is suspicious, such as:
"Does it have code in it that attempts to manipulate certain registry keys."
"Does it have function calls that attempt to connect to the internet in certain ways"
etc.
Material Applications simply refers to "real world" applications, as oppposed to, say, "theoretical applications". Taking the science, and making something concrete with it...
Hope that helps!
umdesch4.
Thanks blondiejam (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/member.php?u=6899) and umdesch4 (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/member.php?u=94), it does help. I don't have problem with "heuristics", I work with heuristic algorithms in my work and understand its meaning. "Material applications" is what puzzled me but your take on it does make sense. Still, I feel that the whole acronym is a bunch of loosely related words, put together post-factum.

Yes, I agree. But that's fairly realistic, I think. Big organizations with more money and resources than creativity do that all the time. I've been in IT departments of big corporations long enough to have seen some SERIOUS doozies!

The upside-down lady has been there for months...
The weird message from Mittelwerk when you click on humanity is new this week. My opinion is that it leaves an opening for the saga to continue in some format or another. :)
Ty, what they said and sadly it's endgame stuff I believe as far as the TVM message goes. I worry that the Doc is ok and has a warm place to sleep, maybe Joop's furry arms would suffice.
