View Full Version : Juliet : Not Happy ?

After watching the Season premier of Lost, again, and again, and again. I noticed a few things, Juliet seems quite unhappy at the beginning when she starts playing the song, ' Petula Clark - Downtown ' . The lyrics seem somewhat ironic. ' When you're alone, and life is making you lonely You can always go Downtown ' . The fact that there is no downtown in this strange place, makes me wonder if Juliet will ever be happy on the island. Also the book that she chooses (Carrie) seems to have some similarities towards Juliets current life. Which brings me to the book club moment when she said, i quote : 'And heres me thinking free will still existed in this ..' Then she was interrupted by the earthquake. I feel Juliet is possibly similar to Alex. She is certainley a disposeable asset because in the scene in which Henry slams the door shut in her face clearly shows he doesn't care for her well-being. I think Juliet has alot to offer to the show and might possibly join forces with the losties. What do you think ?

Hey, I agree with what you say. She doesn't seem at all happy with life at the moment and I this could lead her to help out the losties in some way. I also think that the first 5 mins signalled a lot of problems with their society as a whole.

I definitely think that she at least had at one point, a romantic involvement with Benry. You could cut the tension between them with a knife, especially after watching the upcoming episodes preview, of course I wont discuss it here, thats for the spoilers section.

I don't think there was a love connection between them. i think she is at least somewhat of a desenter to the way he runs things, and he knows it...and he isn't terribly happy about it.

A good discussion opener, Mike, but not really a theory so I'll move this across to General Discussion (and it'll get more traffic in there too). Thanks - mav.
I can see a Boone/Shannon parallel coming :) It would not surprise me, given all the mirroring of characters and quotes, to see Ben and Juliette be portrayed in the same manner as Boone and Shannon, at least from a relationship point of view.

I do not understand why Ben would zip out the door leaving Juliet to deal with Jack and the flood gates, so to speak.
Why wouldn't he stay to help? Other than he's a wiener.
No wonder Juliet's not happy there.

I was thinking it went beyond personal/relationship unhappiness... because of her place in the book club, she seemed like she didn't belong with the other Others. I think this sets her up as the rebel of the group.
Hard to know exactly what's going on in that mind of hers.

I mentioned this particular aspect of Ben and Juliet in another thread, and people thought I was crazy. Since I have seen weirder things on the board lately, I will state my opinion once again.
I don't think that Ben and Juliet dated but are related. Not brother and sister, but father/daughter.
I just don't buy that they are a couple. Not yet.
Reason: I didn't notice anything "manly or manish" in Juliet's house. Everything was girlie.

With this said, they could be dating, but let's also take in account that they live on an island. Ben comes out of a house directly across from Juliet's house.
I'm just trying to throw a :monkey: wrench into the thought process....
If those sunhats ain't manly enough for you...

Juan, you've got a good point. Also I love to see these screen caps to get a better look at everything.

I don't know why but I think the woman Juliet answered the door to is her mother. I think its the warmth and friendliness there seems between them.

If you didn't know yet, our board now has its own screen caps, between the Forum Home and Chat Room. I hope that helps.

certainly a possibility, add that to my thought that she is a dissenter about the Others treatment of the Losties, then you get our tried and true Daddy Issues happening for sure.
Oh, as for the "manly things"...she was hosting a get together...when we have people over, my wife makes it a point to put all of my stuff in a closet or drawer somewhere...not sure why that is...

How many guys get to keep "manly" things at their girlfriend's house???
I think it's waaaaayyyy to soon to make judgements about their relationship. That being said - I have to guess that they were together but broke up due to Juliet's need for independence. She is highly loyal to the others' mission and purpose. But I think she is seeking more "free will" that Benry is willing to provide. I believe that dichotomy will set up for a very interesting storyline this season.

...to tidy up. :)
I think that Juliet is a dissenter as well. Tired of being on the island - "Downtown" music being played. Tired of being Ben's lackey - She obviously can break down Jack, which doesn't take much talent. Juliet had the info, and current too.
Possibly tired of the inhabitants of their community - Juliet picks a book that is her favorite to the distaste of Adam. Almost like a piss off kind of thing.

No it was just added, within the past days. Not all of S2 is up and running, and S1 is still being worked on.

With no evidence what so ever, i'd throw out a bit of blatant speculation that the dissent goes even further than that...probably as far as Alex's helping Claire escape...She could even be the reason Alex has been helping them. Perhaps Juliette has acted as a surrogate mother to Alex...But regardless, I think Juliette is going to be among a group of them that doesn't think the extreme way the others are behaving is right.
again, it's all guesses not based on any real presented facts.

Yeah, you know the Pottery Barn and flowery Pier 1 stuff starts making an invasion after the 1st or 2nd week... ;)
Besides, real men let their gfs put dishes of jasmine potpouri in their bathrooms. Perhaps Ben is just more sensitive than we thought.

That's good forward thinking. I know you were into TLE this summer, so I don't need to rehash some of the outcome (I watched the video and took notes), but generational ties may play a role later *wink*.
Now watch Juliet have had a torrid love affair with Ben! :rolleyez:

Yes, even though he's a bit creepy, I think he does have a sensitive side. He's no manly-man, that's for sure.
And many men don't care at all about interior decor and let their wife/girlfriend completely do what they want. Straw hats, for instance.

He's got my respect for taking an arrow thru the chest like that.

.
Well, he IS "complex"... ;) And a lot of women dig that...
I'll admit, he has a certain John Malkovich type quality to his evilness, and I used to have the biggest crush on him...
I think Juliet chose Carrie, because she can relate to the story. She's like her in that she's an outsider looking in. That's why she's unhappy as well, she doesn't quite belong. And I think with regard to her and Ben, maybe in the beginning they both believed they were working for the same cause, and with that mutual dedication, led to some kind of relationship. But now she realizes maybe they aren't all on the same page and maybe most of the group is on the page Ben is, not hers. There's some disappointment there and maybe a sense of loss, hence the saddness/stress in her face as she plays the Downtown song. I also wonder if she knows she's kinda stuck, she can't protest Ben too much for fear of him and possibly the real person in charge. I probably read too much into it, but who knows.

I agree with the father/daughter thought.
That said, i just realized those 2 schmoes hugging the posts at the kitchen entrance are not in a doorway. They're under 2 posts that are not structural. the "stand in a doorway" rule has to do with getting in an opening through a wall...an opening with a header. (A beam over the opening, resting on adjacent studs). Preferably a doorway that is perpendicular to the direction of the ceiling joists, rather than parallel.
OK, few of you probably understand..not sure I even do,
Just struck me funny that those 2 guys will still be hugging those posts as the ceiling comes down on them, wondering where they went wrong.

Everyone knows that's the first to go in an earthquake, the beams/posts/columns.
We'll maybe not...those 2 didn't.
