Day 1 (September 22, 2004)
1.01 Pilot (part 1)

Locke runs over to help Jack and two other survivors move some debris off of an injured man. After Jack applies a tourniquet to the injured man's leg, Locke and another survivor help "the tourniquet man" away from the still running engine. As they move away, another man runs dangerously close to the engine. Locke yells at him to get away from the turbine, but the man is sucked into the engine - which explodes. Locke throws his hands up and runs for cover.

As the suns sets, Locke sits alone on the beach, gazing out to sea.

Later that night, Locke (sitting by a fire) turns towards a loud eerie sound coming from the jungle. He gets up and joins other survivors closer to the tree line as the sounds intensify.

Day 2 (September 23, 2004)

The next morning, Locke stands silently on the beach and sadly watches a female survivor (Kate) remove sturdy hiking boots from a corpse laying amid the wreckage in the sand. Their eyes meet and Locke slowly smiles, revealing an orange peel in his mouth.

Kate does not return his smile, so Locke turns his head, lowers his gaze and continues eating the orange.

Later that morning/afternoon, Locke sits on the beach staring deeply out at the sea. Storm clouds roll in, darkening the sky. A torrential rain pours down and everyone on the beach starts running for cover - everyone, that is except Locke. He slowly raises his face and arms upward and joyfully welcomes the falling rain.

1.02 Pilot (part 2)

Later that day (after the rain clears), Locke sits on the beach and sets up a backgammon board. He glances up, briefly looking out to sea, as Walt starts to wander by, then stops about ten to fifteen feet behind him. Returning his gaze to the backgammon board, Locke continues to set up the game. Walt asks, "What is it, like checkers?" Without missing a beat, Locke replies, "Not really, it's a better game than checkers." Walt advances to a couple of feet behind Locke, who glancing down and to the side, asks, "You play checkers with your Pop?"

Walt replies, "No....I live in Australia with my mom." Locke then says, "You've got no accent." Walt then tells him that they moved around a lot and his mother died a couple of weeks ago. Locke, after a brief silence, says, "You're having a bad month." Walt says, "I guess", then sits down next to Locke.

Locke's expression softens a little as he gazes at Walt, then he tells him, "Backgammon's the oldest game in the world. Archaeologists found sets when they excavated the ancient ruins of Mesopotamia -- 5,000 years old. That's older than Jesus Christ."

Walt then asks if they had dice. Frowning, Locke nods his head yes and then says, " But their dice weren't made of plastic. Their dice were made of bones."

When Walt says, "Cool", Locke continues, "Two players. Two sides. One is light..." (Locke raises his left hand and shows a white backgammon piece.) "..one is dark." (Locke raises his right hand and shows a black backgammon piece.) Then Locke smiles as he gazes at Walt. Locke quickly closes his fingers around the black and white pieces and lowers his hands. Then, growing serious, Locke leans closer to Walt and gazing intently into his face says, "Walt......Do you want to know a secret?"

1.03 Tabula Rasa

Day 3 (September 24, 2004)

The following day, all of the survivors gather around Sayid, who along with Kate, Sawyer, Charlie, Shannon and Boone have returned from their trek to high ground. Sayid tells everyone the agreed upon lie:
As you and the others know, we hiked up the mountain in an attempt to help the rescue team locate us. The transceiver failed to pick up a signal. We weren't able to send out a call for help. But we're not giving up. If we gather electronic equipment - your cell phones, laptops - I can boost the signal and we can try again, but that may take some time. So for now, we should begin rationing our remaining food. If it rains, we should set up tarps to collect water. I need to organize 3 separate groups. Each group should have a leader. One group for water - I'll organize that. Who's going to organize electronics? You? Rationing food? Okay. And I believe a third group should concern themselves with the construction of. . .

Locke doesn't join the group gathered around Sayid, but he listens from a spot nearby.

Later, as night begins to fall, Locke sits near his campfire carving a small piece of wood. Intent on his handiwork, he seems oblivious to the cries of agony coming from the infirmary. Locke glances up at Charlie as he sits down next to him. Charlie asks, "What are you making?" Without looking at Charlie, Locke replies, "Whistle."

Charlie continues to talk about flutes and a recording session for his band, but Locke appears to ignore him and continues to carve out the whistle. As another cry of pain rings out across the camp, Locke raises the whistle to his lips and tries it out.

Day 4 (September 25, 2004)

A new day finds Locke sitting on the beach, back to the ocean and looking into the jungle. He raises the whistle and blows on it, creating a high pitched sound. After the fourth time the whistle sounds, Vincent barks and comes bounding out of the jungle and then lays obediently on the beach.

A short time later, Locke walks through the scattered debris and makeshift shelters until he comes upon a still sleeping Michael and Walt. Bending over, he taps on Michael's chest - waking him. Before Michael can start talking, Locke quickly brings his fingers to his mouth and says, "Shhh.." Locke, smiling, then tells Michael that he found Walt's dog, Vincent and tied him to a tree. He tells Michael, that he should be the one to bring the dog back to Walt. Getting up, he points in the Vincent's direction and starts to walk away but turns around to say "Welcome" when Michael thanks him.

Locke then sits off to the side and grimly watches as Michael brings Vincent to Walt and the father and son share a happy reunion with the dog.

1.04 Walkabout

(Flashback - On Island -- An unconscious Locke is lying on the beach. He opens his eyes to the chaotic aftermath of the plane crash. The sound of a dog barking is heard amid the other survivors' screams and the roaring noise of the still turning engine. Locke raises his head and looks down toward his foot. He seems mesmerized by the wiggling toes on his right shoe-less foot. Locke notices his shoe within arm's reach and grabbing it, sits up. He appears in shock, staring at his legs as he folds them to put on the shoe. The insistent barking of a dog grabs his attention as he looks off in the distance.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout006.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout006.jpg)

It's night and Locke sits quietly, lost in thought. Nearby, Vincent begins barking which draws the attention of all the survivors. They hear noises coming from the fuselage. Cautiously approaching the wreckage, Jack and Sawyer shine their flashlights into the grim interior. Beady eyes stare back and suddenly something charges out of the fuselage, knocking Charlie down and escaping into the jungle. The survivors stare off into the dark interior as Charlie asks, "What the bloody hell was that?!" Locke, gazing into the jungle, replies, "Boars."

Day 5 (September 26, 2004)

The next morning, the survivors gather wood and start stacking it around the fuselage. The plan is to burn the wreckage and dead bodies later that night. While everyone else is busy gathering wood, Locke kneels on the beach and opens a metal case he recovered in the debris. Then he begins to go through the contents.

A heated altercation breaks out between Sawyer and Hurley, which draws the attention of the other survivors. As everyone gathers around the two men, Jack steps in and breaks them apart. Hurley accuses Sawyer of hoarding food and then discloses that their food supply is exhausted. All the survivors become upset at this news and as panic starts to set in, Sayid loudly reassures everyone, saying, "We can find food. There are plenty of things on this island we can use for sustenance." Sawyer sits down in a salvaged airline seat and asks, "And exactly how are we going to find this sustenance?" Suddenly a knife is thrown and lands in the airline seat next to Sawyer's head!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout098.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout098.jpg)

Everyone turns, looking for the source of the thrown knife and sees -- Locke! He breaks the stunned silence by saying, "We hunt!" While Jack retrieves the knife, Kate asks Locke how he got the knife onto the plane. Locke replies simply, "Checked it." As the survivors start to gather around Locke, Jack hands him the knife, saying, "You either have very good aim, or very bad aim, Mr...?" Michael interjects, "Locke. His name is Locke." Jack then asks Locke, "Okay Mr. Locke, what is it that we're hunting?"

We know there are wild boar on the island ... razorbacks, by the look of them. The ones that came into the camp last night were piglets, 100, 150 pounds each. Which means that there's a mother nearby. A 250 pound rat, with scimitar-like tusks, and a surly disposition, who'd love nothing more than to eviscerate anything that comes near. Boar's usual mode of attack is to circle around and charge from behind -- so I figure it'll take at least three of us to distract her long enough for me to flank one of the piglets, pin it, and slit it's throat.
As Locke finishes speaking, Sawyer asks Jack, "And you gave him his knife back?" Jack replies, "Well, if you've got a better idea... " Sawyer retorts, "Better than the three of you wandering into the magic forest to bag a hunk of ham with nothing but a little bitty hunting knife? Hell no, it's the best idea I ever heard!" Locke smiles and walks over to the metal case. He flips the lid open with his foot and reveals a set of wicked looking knives! Astonished, all of the survivors stare silently at the knives and Locke.

Commentary: For a great read on Locke's knives (and other gear) see this thread: Locke's Lost Luggage (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5512)

(Flashback - The phone rings and Locke quickly picks it up. A male voice asks, "GL12: Col. Locke is this line secure?" Locke looks around and then replies, "Line secure GL12, go ahead." GL12 replies, "Target area is acquired. Maneuvers are a go for 13:00 hours. Repeat: we are a go." Locke replies, "Roger that. We'll convene at the usual rendezvous point at 13:00 hours...." Locke is interrupted by his boss, (Randy) who approaches Locke's office cubicle and loudly reminds him that he needs the reports done by noon today. Locke hangs up the phone and tells Randy that he heard him the first time. As Randy starts to walk away, he says, "And no personal calls during office hours ... Colonel." Somewhat perturbed at Randy, Locke begins to crunch numbers on his calculator as he consults the data on his computer screen.)

Kate and Michael join Locke in the boar hunt. Locke stops along the trail and examines the ground and informs them that it has been rooted up by the boars searching for food. Then he points out the trees scored with the boar's tusks. Michael asks what all that means. Locke answers, "Means we're close." Then he turns and continues to follow the trail.

Kate strikes up a conversation with Michael as the trio walk through the jungle. Locke scans the jungle ahead and listens as Michael tells Kate that Walt's mother died a couple of weeks ago and he flew to Sydney about a week ago to get him (Walt). Locke stops and shushes the other two when he hears rustling in the foliage.

They move forward cautiously as Locke checks out a tree, scored from a boar's tusks. Locke silently nods his head and motions for Kate and Michael to continue following him along the trail. Stopping, Locke quietly indicates to draw weapons and get ready. Then he directs Michael and Kate to proceed in different directions. Irritated, Michael says, "Hey, quit giving us the steal signal!" Suddenly, a wild boar charges them, knocking all three down to the ground as it rushes past! Locke is flat on his back and not moving as he stares up at the sky. Kate gets up slowly and moves over to Michael, who is moaning in pain as the boar's tusk gored his leg. Locke raises his head and looks down at his unmoving feet. After glancing over at Michael, Locke's head falls backward onto the ground and he continues to stare up at the sky.

(Flashback - Locke is sitting across the table from another man at his office break room. They are playing a game of Risk while eating lunch. The other man turns out to be GL12, the person who earlier, called Locke on the phone. GL12 tells the Colonel (Locke) that his troops are across enemy lines and he needs to move. Locke replies, "Patience, the quality which lack, GL12, is the hallmark of a leader." They are interrupted when Randy (Locke's supervisor) walks into the room and sarcastically asks Locke to tell him about being a leader and a colonel as he has never been in the armed forces according to his file.

Perturbed, Locke replies, "I'm just playing a game, Randy. It's my lunch hour -- I can play a game." Randy smiles and then says, "Well, tell me. What's a Walkabout?" Then Randy reads from a travel brochure, "Experience the dream journeys of the fabled Australian Outback." Locke angrily snatches the brochure from Randy's hands, saying, "You have no right taking that off my desk!" Unruffled, Randy continues, "So you ... wander around ... hunting and gathering food, right? ... On foot?"

Not that you would understand, but a Walkabout is a journey of spiritual renewal, where one derives strength from the earth. And becomes inseparable from it.
Then Locke reminds Randy that he has vacation days left and he's already made the reservations. GL12 breaks into the conversation, saying, "Wow, John! You're really doing it, huh? You tell Helen yet?" Locke glances at GL12 as Randy laughs and asks if Locke actually has a woman in his life. Then Randy asks Locke why he tortures himself -- he's not a hunter and can't do a walkabout. Locke simply replies, "Norman Croucher." Randy asks, "What? Norman what?" Without looking at Randy, Locke quietly explains, "Norman Croucher ... double amputee ... no legs. He climbed to the top of Mt.Everest ... why? It was his destiny."

Randy begins to walk off as he sarcastically replies, "That's what you think you've got, old man? ... destiny?" Seething with anger, Locke turns his head toward the retreating Randy and in a controlled voice replies, "Just don't tell me what I can't do!")

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout290.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout290.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout291.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout291.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout292.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout292.jpg)

Kate calls out to Locke, saying that Michael is hurt. When Locke doesn't respond, she asks if he's okay. Locke blinks his eyes a few times and then raises his head and looks back down at his feet. He moves his feet and legs and starting to get up, says, "I'm fine. I'm fine Helen, I just got the wind knocked out of me is all." Kate questions Locke calling her Helen. Sitting up, Locke replies, "Did I?" Then he asks, "Which way did that boar go?" Kate ignores his questions and still tending to Michael says, "Michael's hurt. We have to get him back to camp." As Locke gets to his feet, he replies, " Yeah, you take him back to camp. I'm going to get that boar."

As Locke turns around getting his bearings, Kate (shocked) asks, "What are you talking about?" A determined Locke starts to stride purposefully away, as Kate says, "John, you can't!" Without breaking his stride, Locke walks off into the jungle, saying, "Don't tell me what I can't do!"

Locke walks through the jungle, knife in hand, as he warily looks around.

(Flashback - Locke is in bed, talking on the telephone. He tells the other person (Helen) that he told Randy off and it was a life-changing moment. Then he says, "... now I'm free to do all those things I ever wanted to do ... things that I know I was destined to do ... like we talked about, Helen." After reaching over and turning off a machine on his bedside table, Locke tells Helen that he bought two tickets for the aboriginal Walkabout in Australia. Locke waits with baited breath as a moment of silence passes. Then Helen tells him that although she has enjoyed talking with him for the past 8 months, she's not allowed to meet customers.

Dismayed, Locke asks her if that's all he is to her -- a customer. Helen tells him that he should get a therapist. Growing agitated Locke tells her that he already has a therapist and that he thought she understood as she knows him better than anyone else. Helen doesn't respond to Locke's statements -- instead, she tells him if he keeps talking she'll have to charge him $89.95 for another hour. Locke becomes angry and shouts, "I don't care about the money! I just ..." Helen interrupts him, saying she has to go and then she hangs up. Locke shouts her name and then angrily slams the phone down several times.)

Locke slowly makes his way through the tall jungle growth. He starts running toward the denser part of the jungle when he hears the grunting boar in the foliage ahead. Suddenly Locke draws back in shock as he sees the source of loud metallic sounds mixed in with squealing sounds from the wild boar. Locke backs up and swallow dryly as the trees in front of him shake and move away. Continuing to back up, he raises his eyes, looking at something tall coming toward him. Breathing rapidly, Locke stands still and stares up at the approaching unknown entity.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/th_walkabout391.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/walkabout/walkabout391.jpg)

Later, as Locke nears the beach, he runs into Jack and Kate who have entered the jungle. Locke is dragging a dead boar behind him. He drops the boar's legs, takes several deep breaths and stares at Jack and Kate.

That night, Locke stands next to Michael as he and the other survivors gather for a memorial service Claire is conducting. The fuselage containing the dead, burns brightly in the background as Locke listens to what little they know about the deceased passengers.

Michael quietly tells Locke, "Nice work." Locke doesn't understand and asks Michael, "What?" Michael turns to him and says, "The boar ..nice work ... you know, killing it. Just thought I should say something." Arms folded across his chest, Locke nods and returns his attention to the ceremony. Michael then asks, "So that thing ... the monster .. whatever. She said it was headed right towards you. Did you see anything? Get any kind of look at it?" Locke just stares at Michael and after a moment of silence says, "No." Then he turns and looks back Claire as she continues to talk about the dead.

(Flashback - Locke is at a tour/travel office in Australia. He's seated across the desk from the travel guide who is stressing the strenuous nature of the walkabout. Irritated, Locke tells him that he is well aware of the nature of the walkabout. The agent then insinuates that Locke is not in good enough physical condition to go on the tour. Locke insists on going and as he points out the window, says, "I demand a place on that bus!"

The tour guide accuses Locke of misrepresenting himself by failing to confide his physical condition. Locke dismisses that objection, saying, "My condition is not an issue. I've lived with it for 4 years. It's never kept me from doing anything!" The agent tells Locke that his condition is an issue for their insurance company and then prepares to leave saying, "I can't keep the bus waiting any longer. It isn't fair to the other people." Locke slams him hand down on the desk and shouts, "Hey! Don't talk to me about fair!"

The agent gets up and offers Locke an airplane ticket back to Sydney, but Locke refuses and then says, "Look ... I've been preparing for this for years. Just put me on the bus right now! I can do this!" The agent refuses and begins to walk out of the office. As he rounds the desk, Locke swings the wheelchair he is seated in toward the retreating agent and shouts, "Hey! Hey! Don't you walk away from me! You don't know who you're dealing with! Don't ever tell me what I can't do! Ever!" As he swings his chair around and wheels toward the window, Locke continues, saying, "This is destiny. They is destiny! This is my destiny!" As he watches the guide board the bus, Locke shouts, "I'm supposed to do this! Damn it! Don't tell me what I can't do! Don't tell what I can't ..." Locke falls silent as he watches the bus pulls away from the curb."

Then the flashback changes scenes to the day of the crash. Locke regains consciousness and stares down in amazement as he moves his foot. Locke puts his shoe on and looks up in wonder toward the sky. He slowly gets to his feet and tries out his legs. Responding to Jack's call for help, Locke rushes over toward a man, caught under some debris.)

As the ceremony continues, Locke looks over toward the burning fuselage and sees his wheelchair sitting in front of the blaze. Then he smiles.

1.05 White Rabbit

Day 6 (September 27, 2004)

Locke is having a conversation with Kate and Sayid. Kate has just informed them that someone stole the last of their water supply. Kate and Sayid want to go into the jungle to find fresh water, but Locke tells them that once the other survivors find out that someone stole the water, things would get ugly around the camp. He tells them that they will be needed there since Jack is gone and then volunteers to go in search of water because he "knows where to look". Smiling broadly, Locke walks off to prepare for his trip into the jungle.

Later, Locke extends his hand over the side of a cliff, where Jack is clinging precariously to some roots. Locke smiles and tells him to take his hand. Jack grabs his hand and Locke pulls Jack up to safety.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/th_white-rabbit372.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/white-rabbit372.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/th_snapshot20070805065344.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/snapshot20070805065344.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/th_white-rabbit375.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/lost/season1/white%20rabbit/white-rabbit375.jpg)

Jack rests while Locke gathers water off of the broad leaves of the jungle foliage. Jack asks how the others are doing. Locke looks pointedly at Jack and replies, "Thirsty ... hungry ... waiting to be rescued ...and they need someone to tell them what to do." Jack understands that Locke means Jack is that "someone" and protests that he is not a leader. Locke responds, "And yet they all treat you like one." Jack protests saying he doesn't have what it takes to be a leader.

Locke changes the subject and asks what Jack is doing out in the jungle. Jack tells Locke that he thinks he is going crazy -- chasing something or someone. Locke sits down across from Jack and replies, "Ah ... the white rabbit ... Alice in Wonderland." Jack agrees, saying, "Yeah ... Wonderland ... because who I'm chasing -- he's not there." Locke asks, "But you see him?" Jack replies, "Yes ... but he's not there."

Locke asks if he told Jack the same thing, what would he think as a doctor. Jack responds that his diagnosis would be hallucinations brought on by dehydration, post traumatic stress and lack of sleep. Locke nods and says, "All right then. You're hallucinating." After pausing, Locke asks, "But what if you're not?" Jack replies, "Then we're all in a lot of trouble."
LOCKE: I'm an ordinary man Jack, meat and potatoes, I live in the real world. I'm not a big believer in magic. But this place is different. It's special. The others don't want to talk about it because it scares them. But we all know it. We all feel it. Is your white rabbit a hallucination? Probably. But what if everything that happened here, happened for a reason? What if this person that you're chasing is really here?
JACK: That's impossible.
LOCKE: Even if it is; let's say it's not.
JACK: Then what happens when I catch him?
LOCKE: I don't know. But I've looked into the eye of this island. And what I saw ... was beautiful.
Locke smiles and gets up to leave to find some more water. Jack offers to go with him but Locke says, "No. You need to finish what you started." Jack asks, "Why?" Shouldering his pack, Locke replies, "Because a leader can't lead until he knows where he's going." Then he leaves Jack as he walks off into the jungle.

1.06 House of the Rising Sun

Day 7 (September 28, 2004)

The next morning, Locke is packed and all ready to go with a few others to get water from the cave. As he waits for the others to get ready, Locke dry shaves with one of his knives. A few minutes later, Locke, Charlie, Jack, and Kate set out for the cave.

Jack leads the way through the dense jungle growth. Locke, bringing up the read, pauses to take a look around. Then he continues following the others.

Arriving at the cave, Locke looks around and declares, "It's amazing!" Charlie turns and replies, "Absolutely! Totally you." Charlie then suggests that they go through the debris as it may contain something useful. To Charlie's surprise, Locke agrees, saying, "He's got a point." So Jack tells Charlie to go through the debris and keep an eye out for medical supplies. While Charlie does that, Locke brings the empty water bottles over to Jack and Kate who are over by the water pool.

A short time later, Charlie has wondered off and is standing beside a tree. Suddenly, Locke quietly says, "Don't move!" Charlie starts to tell Locke something but Locke cuts him off saying firmly, "Do ... not ... move." Jack and Kate approach, asking what's going on but Locke holds up his hand and shushes them. Then Locke quietly says, "He's standing on a beehive." Charlie, on the verge of panic, says, "What's a beehive doing there? Beehives are supposed to be in trees!"

Locke softly tells Jack, "If he moves, he'll split the hive." Charlie becomes more agitated and tells everyone he has an irrational fear of bees and is allergic to them. Locke, fully in control, tells Charlie to be quiet and then instructs Jack and Kate to get something to seal the hive. He tells them to hurry as bees start landing all over Charlie's face.

Jack and Kate return with a suitcase. As Jack kneels down to cover the hive, Charlie (bees all over his face) says, "This is the most crap idea ever! It's never going to work!" Locke replies calmly, "Now, pull yourself together, son." But Charlie can't pull himself together and slaps one of the bees on his face. As he slaps the bee, he steps forward, breaking the hive. Everyone runs as the bees start to attack. Jack and Kate run toward the cave as Charlie and Locke run in the opposite direction.

A short time later, Locke (followed by Charlie) enters the cave looking for Kate and Jack. After making sure everyone is all right, Locke stands in the background as Charlie, having found Kate's discarded blouse, returns it to her. She comments that it was full of bees. Charlie replies, "I'd have thought C's, actually." Charlie then turns and sees one of the skeletons, commenting, "Are these the people who were here before us?" Jack looks over at Locke, who quickly moves toward the skeletons.

Locke asks Jack, "Who were these men?" Jack replies, "Actually, one of them is female." Locke gazes at the remains and says softly, "Our very own Adam and Eve."

Later, as they are packing up the filled water bottles, Locke offers to stay with Charlie and go through the debris for salvage. Kate suggests that she and Jack get going as the rest of the survivors will be thirsty. Jack tells them that hauling water from the caves to the beach is going to be a lot of work. Then he suggests that "Adam and Eve" lived there, recognizing the cave as a natural shelter with unlimited water. Jack tells them, "We don't need to bring the water to the people. We need to bring the people to the water. I think we could live here."

Some time after Jack and Kate leave, Charlie stops going through the wreckage and starts to exit the cave. Locke quickly takes out after him. Charlie turns around and asks Locke if he's following him. Locke replies, "Yes." Charlie says, "There's no need. I'm just going to the "loo"." Locke grins and asks, "Is there something you want to tell me, Charlie?" Perplexed, Charlie takes a step closer and says slowly, "I'm going to the loo." Locke replies, "It's dangerous out there. Until we get back to the beach, I'm not breaking line-of-sight with you." Charlie smirks and as he turns around, says, "Bugger off!"

As Charlie starts to walk away, Locke points his finger at him and says, "I know who you are." Charlie turns around and stares fearfully at Locke, who continues, " ... and I know what you're looking for! Driveshaft -- you played bass." Relieved and pleased that Locke recognized him, Charlie grins and replies, "And guitar! -- on a couple of tracks. You really heard of us?" Locke turns away and walks further into the cave. Laughing, he turns around and tells Charlie that he has both of his albums. Then he asks Charlie how long it's been since he played. Charlie replies, "My guitar? Uh ... 8 days, 11 hours -- give or take."

Locke nods his head and asks if Charlie misses it. After Charlie nods his head yes, Locke tells him there's a lot of wreckage and it might still turn up. Charlie replies, "Undamaged? Still playable? I don't think so. I mean, I wish, but there was this bloke at the counter made me check it in." Locke squats down in front of Charlie and reassures him, saying, "You'll see it again." Charlie says, "Oh yeah? What makes you say that?" Locke replies, "Because I have faith, Charlie."

Sometime later, Charlie sneaks out of the cave and comes face-to-face with -- Locke! After a moment, Charlie says, "Listen to me, you old git. I'm going in the jungle. A man has a right to some privacy." But Locke still doesn't buy his excuse. Locke holds out his hand and tells Charlie to give "it" to him. He urges Charlie to choose to give it up now as he'll run out of "it" sooner or later. Locke confides that he knows a lot a pain and wants to help Charlie. Charlie frowns and starts to walk away. Locke stops him by asking, "Do you want your guitar?" Charlie walks back and silently nods his head. Then Locke asks, "More than your drug?" Charlie replies, "More than you know."

Locke quickly says, "What I know ... is that this island might just give you what you're looking for, but you have to give the island something." Then he holds out his hand toward Charlie. After thinking it over, Charlie hands over the drugs and asks, "You really think you can find my guitar?" Locke replies, "Look up, Charlie." Charlie replies, "You're not going to ask me to pray or something?" Locke shakes his head and pointing his finger upward, says, "I want you to look up."

Charlie looks up and sees his guitar, cradled in the trailing roots of a banyan tree. Locke smiles as Charlie grins with joy.

Later that night in the cave, Charlie plays his guitar as Locke continues organizing. Jack, along with a group of other survivors, arrive at the cave. Locke asks, "What's this?" Jack replies, "Tenants." Locke then sits down near a campfire and listens to the soft strains of Charlie's guitar.

1.07 The Moth

Day 8 (September 29, 2004)

Locke approaches Charlie, who is sitting in the cave near the waterfall. Charlie, suffering from withdrawal symptoms, is sweating profusely and trying to play his guitar. Locke suggests they go for a walk, but Charlie declines saying "I think I'm going to stay in today." Locke remain adamant and insists on Charlie coming with him, saying, "Come on. The fresh air will do you good."

A short time later, a boar chases Charlie through the jungle. As he starts to climb a tree, some luggage falls and the boar is trapped by a large net! Locke emerges from his hiding spot and yells, "Nice work, Charlie!" As he gathers the trap's line, Locke grins and tells Charlie, "You make excellent bait!" However, Charlie is not amused. He stares coldly at Locke and says, "I'm glad I could oblige. Now give me my bloody drugs." Charlie takes a few steps closer to Locke and shouts, "Did you hear what I said? I want my drugs back. I need 'em!"

Locke tells Charlie that he's stronger than that and he's going to prove it by allowing Charlie to ask for the drugs three times. He explains, "The third time, I'm going to give them to you. Now ... just so we're clear ..." Locke flicks open his knife and continues, saying, "... this is one!" Charlie yells after Locke as he walks toward the boar, asking why Locke is doing this to him. Perturbed, Locke turns back around and firmly says, " If I did that you wouldn't have a choice, Charlie. And having choices, making decisions based on more than instinct, is the only thing that separates you from him." (Locke points to the ensnared boar.) Then he walks over to the boar, grabs its ear and slits its throat.

Later, as Locke is skinning the boar, Charlie (sweaty, disheveled and quietly desperate) approaches and stares silently. Locke asks if there is something wrong. Locke listens as Charlie tells him that Jack is trapped in a cave-in and a bunch of people are trying to get him out. Continuing to work on the boar, Locke asks Charlie, "Why aren't you with them?" Locke looks up at Charlie, who glances away and doesn't answer. Locke stops working on the boar and says, "You didn't come here to tell me about Jack, did you?" Charlie looks like he's about to cry as he pleads, "I want my stash, Locke. I can't stand feeling like this."

Locke wipes the blade of his knife off on his shirt and quietly tells Charlie to follow him. Locke approaches a plant and pointing to a cocoon, asks Charlie what he thinks is inside. Charlie guesses a butterfly, but Locke tells him it's a moth, which spins silk and is stronger and faster than a butterfly. Locke points at the cocoon with his knife and says, "You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling. It's digging it's way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it, take my knife, gently widen the opening, and the moth would be free. But it would be too weak to survive. The struggle is nature's way of strengthening it. Now this is the second time you've asked me for your drugs back ..." Locke pauses and holds up the bag of heroin to Charlie's face. Then Locke continues, saying, "... ask me again and it's yours."

That evening, back at the cave, Locke cooks the boar over an open fire. As he brushes it with a frond, Charlie walks up and asks for his drugs. Locke informs Charlie that this is the third time and asks if he's sure. Charlie quietly replies, "I've made my choice." Disappointed, Locke silently hands Charlie the bag of heroin. Charlie stares at his stash as he turns it over in his hand and then he quickly casts it into the fire. Locke smiles and turning to Charlie, says, "I'm proud of you Charlie. Always knew you could do it." Charlie smiles at his words and then (with tears in his eyes) glances up to see a moth flying overhead. Locke follows his gaze and sees the moth. Locke smiles as he returns his attention to the fire.

1.08 Confidence Man

Day 9 (September 30, 2004)

Locke sits off to the side at the caves. His face and upper body are in the shadows as he leans back and sharpens the point of a stout branch. Sayid briskly walks up to him and asks, "Locke! Where were you last night, around sunset?" Locke exhales and looking down at the pointed stick, tells Sayid that his only alibi is the boar he was skinning for dinner. Locke, continues, saying, "I heard you were trying to send out a distress call. So it would seem whoever attacked you has a reason for not wanting to get off the island."

Sayid quickly squats down beside Locke as Locke tells him that the person who hit him may be profiting from their situation and then remarks that he (Sayid) and Sawyer share a "certain animosity". Sayid tells Locke it couldn't have been Sawyer as he was two kilometers away, setting off a bottle rocket, which was a prearranged-arranged timed signal. Locke quietly interrupts him, saying, "Unless he found a way to time delay the fuse on his rocket."

Rising, Sayid protests asking, "How could he possibly have ..." Locke cuts him off and calmly tells him that anyone who watches television could do it using a cigarette. Sayid stares at him silently. Looking up, Locke offers him his knife -- blade first. When Sayid doesn't make a move to take it, Locke flips the knife around and offers the handle to Sayid, saying, "Just in case there's another time." Sayid slowly closes his hand around the knife's handle.

1.09 Solitary

Day 11 (October 2, 2004)

Hurley sits dozing by the fire. Locke and Ethan dump a bag at his feet -- waking him. Locke tells Hurley that they found it in the jungle and guesses that it's more cargo from the plane crash. Hurley asks, "What are you guys doing out in the jungle at night?" Ethan replies, "Best time to hunt." Locke, squatting down near the salvaged bag, tells Hurley that Ethan is an experienced hunter and they were following some rabbit or rodent tracks. Hurley, responding to the suggestion of rodent, distastefully says, "Yum." Ethan laughs and remarks that people are probably getting tired of boar meat. Hurley agrees and tells Locke and Ethan that he will go through the bag and see if there's anything they can use. Then Locke and Ethan walk away.

Locke slides his knife into its sheath and continues checking his other gear. Walt comes up behind him and calls out his name. As Locke turns around, Walt asks, "Are you going back out to hunt?" Locke nods his head and says, "For a bit." Then Walt asks him if he can go with him. Before Locke can answer, Michael calls out Walt's name. Turning around, Walt tries to explain, saying, "I was just. I was talking to Mr. Locke and..." Michael cuts him off as he replies, "I know what you're doing; it's not going to happen man. Get back to bed." Locke shoulders his pack and shrugs as Walt gives him one last look before returning to his bed.

Day 12 (October 3, 2004)

A knife slices through the air and embeds in a tree. Locke removes the blade and takes up his position away from the tree. He stares at his mark on the tree and as he turns around, asks, "Does your father know you're here?" Standing quietly behind him, Walt shakes his head no and then asks, "Can you teach me how to do that?" Locke thinks about it for a minute. He flips the knife up in the air and catches it. Then Locke extends the handle toward Walt. He smiles as Walt takes the knife and runs his hand along the blade.

Day 13 (October 4, 2004)

(Claire's Dream -- Locke is seated at a small round table. A tarot deck of cards and three shells are laying on the table in front of him. A floor lamp (the same one as seen in Malkin's home) illuminates Locke and the table. Locke does not look up as Claire approaches, rather he grabs a card from the tarot deck and stares at it intently.

Claire asks softly, "What's happening." Still staring at the card as he places it on the table, Locke curtly replies, "You know what's happening."
Claire stammers, "But I don't understand. Why --?" Locke quickly interjects, " He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire." Then Locke raises his face (one of his eyes is black and the other is white), and stares at Claire as he grimly replies "Everyone pays the price now." )

Day 14 (October 5, 2004)

At the beach campsite, Locke is working on a boar hide when Hurley approaches him to verify his name for the census. Locke tells Hurley that he already knows his name and then volunteers that he's lived most of his life in Tustin, CA. Hurley then asks Locke for the reason he was travelling in Australia. Locke replies, "I was looking for something."

Hurley makes a note and then asks if Locke found it. Locke looks inland, smiles and says, "No. It found me." Then turning his gaze upon Hurley asks, "Anything else?" Hurley stammers, "No, no. That's good. Uh, thanks." Locke watches as Hurley turns and hurries over to another survivor.

Later that day, Locke is just inside the cave, when a very exhausted Sayid pushes past him on his way toward Jack and Kate. Locke draws near the three of them and listens as Sayid tells Jack, "Listen to me. I found her, the French woman. The woman -- on the island. I had to come back. I had to come back." As Jack starts to look at Sayid's wounded leg, Sayid grabs his arm and gasps, "We're not alone."

1.11 All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

After gasping, "We're not alone", Sayid passes out as Hurley rushes up to the small group and informs everyone that Ethan (the Canadian guy) wasn't on the plane. Jack grows agitated and stands up, yelling, "Has anyone seen Ethan?" Michael approaches and replies, "Yeah, yeah. He went to go get some wood. He took off on the path to the beach. Is he okay? What happened?"

Jack looks around at the gathering survivors and asks, "Where's Charlie?" Everyone looks around and then Locke quietly, replies, "He went after Claire."

Locke and Jack take off running down the path to the beach. Locke stops short and yells for Jack. Locke points out Claire's bag on the ground and then informs Jack of three sets of footprints indicating a struggle. Locke notices something along the trail and quickly moves to investigate. He points out drag marks in a couple of places and says, "I think they've been taken."

Jack starts circling around, yelling, "Claire! ... Charlie! ... Claire!" Locke shouts at Jack and then raising his finger to his lips says, "Shhhh!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/th_lockeshushingjacka.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/lockeshushingjacka.jpg)

Locke leads Jack through the jungle as he follows the tracks. Locke stops and shows Jack a broken branch, commenting quietly, "Tracks are still fresh."

Jack says, "This doesn't make any sense. How can one man drag off two people, one of them pregnant?" Locke replies, "You're asksing the wrong question -- Not how ... why?"

Jack asks, "You think it was Ethan?"

Locke replies, "It certainly feels like it was Ethan, doesn't it?" Locke continues telling Jack that they can't account for all their people and insinuates that Ethan isn't one of them. He then suggests to Jack that they go back to the caves and organize a search party. But Jack is too impatient and demands to know which way they went. Silently Locke points with his knife and Jack takes off running in that direction.

A short time later, Locke is back at the caves quickly preparing his gear. As he closes his knife case and stores it away, Kate asks, "You let hem go alone!?" Locke calmly replies, "Don't worry, I'll catch up. What's the word from the beach?" As Locke and Kate walk toward Kate's gear, Kate replies, "Nothing. I'm telling you, no one has seen him." After a brief pause, she adds, "I'm coming with you." Without looking at her, Locke hands Kate a knife, saying, "I figured you might."

As Kate donns her backpack, Boone (followed by Shannon) approaches Locke. Ignoring Shannon's protests, Boone asks Locke if he can join the search party. Locke says as long as he up for it, he could use another hand. Against Shannon's wishes, Boone says, "I'm up for it." Locke hands Boone a knife, saying, "Then let's get moving!"

As the three of them exit the cave, Michael approaches Locke and volunteers to go with them. Locke briskly replies, "Thanks, but we're set. Anyone else is just going to slow us down." Michael takes offense at Locke's rebuff and quickly retorts, "Okay ... maybe I'll just put together another party." Locke replies, "Good idea -- we're going North -- I suggest you go South!" Abruptly dismissing Michael, Locke turns his back on him and starts off through the jungle.

A short time later, Locke yells Jack's name as he, Kate and Boone come upon him in the jungle. As he approaches, Locke says, "Good thing you were going in a circle. Not much of a search grid ... but we never would have found you otherwise."

Locke then suggests that Jack go back to the caves and take care of Sayid, but Jack dismisses that suggestion and presses Locke to follow the trail so they can find Charlie and Claire. As Jack confronts Locke, John replies, "Jack ... this was my fault ... I hunted with Ethan. I spent time with him. I never sensed anything off. But for everything that I know about hunting, tracking -- whoever he is --- he knows more. If we catch up with him, I don't want anything to happen to the only trained physician on the island. So go back -- be the doctor. Let me be the hunter."

As Kate and Boone look on, Jack stares at Locke while he catches his breath and then ignoring everything that Locke has said, replies, "Can we go now?"

Irritated, Locke yields and moving off toward the trail, says, "Follow me."

Further along the trail, Locke uses his teeth to rip up a red shirt. As he ties a piece of the red shirt around a tree, he informs Boone, "We mark our progress by line of sight. We tie these off so we don't get lost." Concerned, Boone asks, "You can lead us back to camp, right?" Sweating profusely and breathing hard from the trek, Locke softly replies, "If nothing happens to me." Boone thinks about that for a minute and then, holding out his hand, says, "Maybe I better take marker detail." Locke grins and hands the red shirt over to Boone just as Jack and Kate run up to them.

Breathing hard, Jack asks if Locke has found the trail. Locke snaps back that he'll pick it up again but right now they need to rest for a minute. Jack objects, saying, "You're going to take a break!? It's got to be almost 4 o'clock. When the sun sets there's no way ..." Locke briskly cuts him off and replies, "It's 4:25 and yes, I'm taking a break!" Locke sits down and begins to open his pack as Kate gets Jack to follow her away from Locke and Boone for a private conversation.

A few minutes later, Locke yells for Jack. Locke holds out his hand as Jack and Kate rush up to him. Locke has found one of Charlie's finger-tapes with the letter "L" on it! Locke nods as Jack looks up and says, "He's leaving us a trail."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/th_snapshot20080705111419.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/snapshot20080705111419.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/th_daddy-issues0266.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/daddy-issues0266.jpg)

As they advance through the jungle, Jack finds a broken branch and informs the others of the trail. Locke, a short distance away, objects, saying, "I'm not so sure. There's another trail here." Locke points out some footprints as he says, "People moved off this way."

Jack approaches Locke, holds up one of Charlie's finger tapes and says, "Charlie is leaving these for us to follow ..." Then as Jack points in another direction, he continues, saying, "They went that way."

Both Locke and Jack stare at Kate as she interjects, "Unless Charlie isn't the one leaving them. If Ethan knows that we're behind him, he could be setting up a dummy trail -- take off in one direction, double-back his own footprints." Surprised, Boone blurts out, "Wait!? Now you're a tracker!?" Locke stares at Kate and remarks, "You're just full of surprises."

Jack suggests that they split up since they have two trails and two trackers. Locke says that they should stay together but when Jack insists he acquiesces and cautions, "Be careful." Then Jack and Kate take off in the direction that Jack thinks the trail runs, while Locke and Boone follow the footprints Locke found.

Later, as he ties a piece of the red shirt to a tree, Boone mutters, "Redshirt." Locke stops and turning back towards Boone, says, "Huh?" Boone asks him if he ever watched Star Trek. Locke turns away as he says, "Nah .. not really."

Boone explains that the crew guys that went down to the planet with the main guys and the captain always got killed and they always wore red shirts. Locke stops and thinks about that for a minute, then tells Boone, "Sounds like a piss-poor captain."

Boone laughs and starts following Locke as he moves on ahead.

BOONE: What do you do in the real world, Mr. Locke?
LOCKE: It's John.
BOONE: John.
LOCKE: Why don't you guess?
BOONE: Well, you're either a taxidermist or a hit man?
LOCKE: [chuckling]: I was a regional collection supervisor for a box company.
BOONE: A box company?
LOCKE:They made boxes.
BOONE: (sarcastically) Yeah, right.

Later, Locke and Boone move through a small clearing as Boone comments, "Still, 15 minutes since we've seen any sign. What are we following?" Locke quickly replies, "My gut!" Locke then asks Boone what he does in the real world. He tells Locke that his mother has an empire -- "The Martha Stewart of matrimony" -- and he runs one of the subsidiaries. After Boone answers another question, Locke stops and placing his hand on Boone's shoulder ,saying, "It's going to start raining in one minute."

Then Locke tries to convince Boone to head back to camp, reassuring him that if he starts back now he'll make it back before dark. Boone refuses and repeatedly insists upon continuing on. Finally, Locke says, "All right." Then he smiles and as it starts to rain, raises his face and stretches out his arms to the falling rain. After a couple of minutes, Locke lowers his arms and still smiling, walks past Boone, who yells after him, "Do they teach you how to predict the weather at a box company?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/th_daddy-issues0613.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/walkthrough%20pics/season%201/cowboys/daddy-issues0613.jpg)

Night has fallen and Locke leads Boone onward with only the help of a flashlight. Boone expresses concern that they are lost and should probably turn back. Then he wonders how Locke can follow any trail in the dark. At that Locke asks loudly, "Don't you feel it!?" Exasperated, Boone asks, "Feel what?" Locke says emphatically, "It!" At that, Boone tells Locke that he's going back to camp. Locke replies, "Suit yourself." As Boone starts to turn back, Locke stops him saying, "Boone, you need this more that I do." Then he tosses the flashlight toward Boone. Boone misses and the flashlight falls to the ground making a metallic thunking sound.

In surprise, both men kneel down and start pulling plants away. They quickly expose a piece of metal. Locke bangs on it with his knife and says, "Steel."

Boone asks, "Could that be part of the plane? Part of the wreckage?"

Locke taps his knife in a few different places as Boone asks, "What is that?"

Locke replies, "That's what we're going to find out."

Locke and Boone start to dig.

Locke is sitting quietly with his back against a tree. He sees Boone making his way through the dense jungle and asks, "You got it?"

Boone drops the axe close to Locke and replies, "Yeah. Isn't there any easier way to get there?"

Locke picks up the axe and replies, "The easiest way isn't always the best." He starts to walk away as he asks, " Did anybody see you take it?"

Boone replies, "No, I don't think so."

Locke whirls around and somewhat perturbed asks, "Well, which is it?" Boone is perplexed and doesn't know what he means. Locke asks again, "No? or ... I don't think so?"

Boone thinks for a minute and then replies, "No."

Turning, Locke says, "Good! Let's get to work."

Day 22 (October 13, 2004)
1.13 Hearts and Minds

Locke yells at Boone, who is standing on the beach talking to Sayid. As Boone turns towards him, Locke motions over his shoulder toward the jungle and says, "Found some fresh tracks down by the stream." Locke watches as Boone says something to Sayid and then turns to join him. As Boone approaches, Locke smiles and waves briefly at Sayid.

LOCKE: You need to put aside your differences with Sayid.
BOONE: He's hitting on Shannon.
LOCKE: [while they are crossing the stream on stepping stone rocks]: He's very competent. We don't want to make an enemy of him. We're going to want him on our side.
BOONE: John, people are talking about what we're doing out here everyday, especially since we never come back with anything.
LOCKE: You mean boar.
BOONE: Yeah.
LOCKE: Plenty of fruit and fish to go around. What we're doing here is far more important.

Having reached their destination, the two men uncover their secret treasure. As they solemnly gaze downward, Locke says, "Right now, this is our priority."

Sometime later, Boone, (sweaty and dirty from working on the hatch) takes a break and joins Locke, who is seated nearby mixing something in a coconut bowl. After complaining about not being able to open the door, Boone asks Locke, "The stuff in the bowl - what is that?"

Locke sprinkles something into the bowl and continuing to stir the mixture, replies, "It's for later."

Wiping the dirt off his hands, Boone says, "So, not to be too difficult, but we've been coming here for two days just staring at this thing. I'm not really sure what we're supposed to be doing."

Boone laughs softly and says, "We're not going to stare at this for 4 months, are we? How are we going to open it?"

Locke gets up, walks over to the hatch and squatting down, replies, "Well, that's what we have to figure out. That's why we're sitting here. I mean ... how do you open a hatch that has no handle, no latch, no discernable way of opening it?"

Later, Locke and Boone are walking through the jungle and Boone is pressing Locke to tell the other survivors about the hatch. Locke objects, claiming that the other survivors are not ready -- that they won't understand it. Then Boone insists that he at least has to tell his sister, Shannon. When Locke asks why Boone cares so much about Shannon, Boone replies, "You don't know her man! She's smart! She's special in a lot of ways."

Locke replies, "Fair enough." As they continue to walk, Boone tells Locke that he can't keep lying to her. Locke stops walking and asks, "You mean you can't keep lying to her -- or you can't stand the way she makes you feel because you're lying to her?"

Boone tells him "both" and knowing that she can keep a secret, he's sure he wants to tell her. Locke presses him and asks if he's thought it through and is aware of the ramifications involved. Boone insists that he is sure. Locke replies simply, "So be it." Boone nods and starts to walk past Locke, who quickly removes his knife and slams the handle into the back of Boone's head, knocking him out cold.

A short time later, Locke sits near a tied up Boone, stirring the mixture in the coconut bowl. Boone regains consciousness, demands an explanation and demands to be untied. He pleads with Locke, reassuring him that he won't tell anyone about the hatch.

Locke tells him, "I'm doing this, Boone, because it's time for you to let go of some things ... because it's what's best for you." Locke gets up and moves over to toward Boone, saying, "And, I promise ... you're going to thank me for this later."

Then Locke grabs the stuggling Boone, and smears the mixture on his head, saying, "An untreated wound -- out here -- is going to get infected."

Locke packs up his gear as a disbelieving Boone cries out, "You're not going to just leave me here!?" Shouldering his backpack, Locke replies, "Whether you stay is up to you. The camp is 4 miles due west."

As Boone struggles against his bonds, he asks, "Which way is west?". Locke withdraws his knife and throws it just out of Boone's reach. Then Locke tells Boone, "You'll be able to cut yourself free once you have the proper motivation." Ignoring Boone's shouts, Locke turns and hurries off through the jungle.

A short time later, Locke emerges into a small clearing and finds Sayid, brandishing a knife and waiting for an intruder. After they exchange greetings, Sayid lowers the knife and asks Locke what he is doing out here. Locke explains that he and Boone were hunting, but Boone wanted to "go it alone" and suggested that Locke take the afternoon off. Sayid is dubious about Boone hunting alone and asks Locke if he thinks Boone will catch anything. Locke says no and then asks Sayid what he's doing out here.

Sayid explains that he was "orienteering" -- trying to decipher Rousseau's maps. Locke notices the makeshift compass that Sayid constructed and comments that he hadn't seen one since his Weebelo days. Sayid asks, "What's a Weebelo?" Locke replies, "It's half way between a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout." Then explains that a Webelo gets badges, ties knots, identifies birds -- adding, "I wasn't the most popular kid."

Locke prepares to leave, gestures to Rousseau's maps and says, "I'll leave you to it." Then he hands Sayid his compass, saying, "Maybe this will help your cause." Puzzled, Sayid looks at the compass (now in his hands) and then asks Locke, "Don't you need this?" Locke grins and replies, "Not anymore." Then he walks off into the jungle with Sayid staring at his retreating figure.

Later, at the beach, Locke is sitting on some rocks and staring out at the sea as Jack approaches, saying, "Any ships?" Locke looks up and replies, "Not yet, but I'm patient." Then Jack sits down next to Locke and remarks that it's been awhile since they've talked. Then Jack asks, "Where's Boone?" Locke replies, "I haven't seen him today."

They joke about how inseparable Locke and Boone have become and then Jack asks how the boar hunting is going. Locke tells Jack, "I'm afraid they're beginning to migrate outside our valley. They're smart animals, and smart animanls adapt quickly when a new predator is introduced into their environment." Jack asks, "You mean us?" Locke nods his head and looking at Jack, replies, "The most dangerous predator of all."

Later, after Jack has joined Charlie on the beach, Locke can be seen still sitting in the same spot, staring thoughtfully out at the ocean.

That night, Locke sits close to one of the campfires on the beach, staring intently into the flames. Suddenly, Boone lunges at him, screaming, "You killed her!" Boone presses down on Locke, trying to stab him with a knife. Holding him off, Locke says quietly, "You made it back." Ignoring his remark and seething with anger, Boone continues to threaten Locke as he says, "You killed my sister! It's your fault! You drug her out there!" Locke trys to calm Boone down as he (Boone) laments Shannon's death, saying, "She died in my arms." Locke asks, "Why is there no blood on you?"

Startled by the question, Boone looks at himself and sees there is no blood. Shaken from his rage, he asks, "What the hell just happened to me out there?"

Locke pushes Boone away and says, "I don't know -- I don't know! You tell me!" Looking over his shoulder, Locke says, "But your sister, Shannon ...." Boone stares in disbelief in the direction of Locke's gaze. He sees Shannon and Sayid walk up to another campfire. Shocked, Boone mumbles, "She was dead."

Locke asks, "Is that what it made you see?" Boone, still trying to pull it all together, replies, "What made me see? ... that stuff you put on my head ... you drugged me!" Locke calmly replies, "I gave you an experience that I believe was vital to your survival on this island."

Wide-eyed, Boone whispers, "It wasn't real?" Locke replies, "It was only as real as you made it." Boone, glancing at Shannon, says, "I saw her die." Locke asks quietly, "How did you feel? When she died?" Still trying to get a grip on himself, Boone softly admits, "I felt ... I felt ... I felt relieved... I felt relieved." Locke smiles slightly and then, nodding his head, announces, "Yes ... time to let go."

Locke rises and donning his backpack, quietly tells Boone, "Follow me." Then he turns and walks into the dark jungle. Boone follows him.

1.14 Special

Locke hands Walt a knife and then steps back as Walt (aiming carefully) throws the knife at a tree. After the knife handle hits the tree and falls to the ground, Walt exclaims, "Man! I suck!" Locke retrieves the knife, saying, "You can do better than that." Boone, leaning against a tree, quietly tells Locke, "You might want to take it easy on him."

Locke ignores Boone as he points at a spot on the tree and instructs Walt, "See this knot, Walt? I want you to aim for it, right here. Focus on it, alright? Picture it in your mind's eye. You know what that is, right? The mind's eye?"

Walt asks, "Like a picture in your head or some ..." Locke cuts him off and tells him that is right and then hands Walt the knife saying, "Now do it again. But see it! See it before you do it. Visualize the path. See it ... see it ..."

Locke withdraws and Walt stares hard at the knot in the tree. Concentrating, Walt draws back and then hurls the knife at the tree. The knife hits the knot and sticks! Walt is elated and as he shouts, Locke grins and walks toward the tree, saying, "I knew you had it in you, Walt." As Locke retrieves the knife, Walt says, "It was weird. I actually saw it ... in my mind or something ... like it was real." Handing him the knife, Locke grins and says, "Who's to say it wasn't?"

Just then, an angry Michael approaches, asking, "What the hell is going on!?" He demands Walt to give him the knife and then tells him to take Vincent and return to camp. Walt tries to explain but Michael remains firm and Walt reluctantly leaves with Vincent.

After Walt leaves, Michael turns to Locke and asks, "You gave my boy a knife?" Locke starts to explain, but Michael angrily cuts him off and yells at Locke for encouraging Locke to sneak away from him and letting him have the knife. When Locke replies, "Walt knows his own mind", Michael raises the knife toward Locke in a threatening manner. Locke puts his hands up and takes a couple of steps backward, saying, "Walt knows his own mind." This upsets Michael further and he shouts, "Hey! Don't talk about my son like you know him!" Locke quietly tells Michael to calm down.

Suddenly, Boone tackles Michael from behind. The impact knocks the knife out of Michael's hand as both men fall to the ground. Boone quickly grabs the knife and holding it at Michael's whispers, "The man said -- calm down."

Michael quickly slugs Boone, knocking him away and turning the table on him. As Michael starts punching Boone, he shouts, "What are you? ... his attack dog!?"

Locke breaks up the fight explaining that Boone just didn't want anyone to get hurt. Then he tells Michael that the reason Walt is forming a bond with him (Locke) is that he treats him like an adult -- not a child. Michael replies, "He's ten years old." But Locke heatedly snaps back, "He's been through more than most people in the entire lifetime. Maybe you haven't spent enough time with him to see it, but he's different." Michael softly asks, "What did you say?" Locke continues, saying, "And we're not back home. As long as we're here, I think Walt should be allowed to realize his potential."

Michael glances over at Boone and looking back at Locke says, "Stay away from my son! And me!"

Day 27 (October 18, 2004)

Locke and Boone walk past Michael and Walt sorting through the salvage for whatever they can use for the raft. Without glancing at them, Locke and Boone disappear into the jungle. A short time later, the two men enter the caves. Locke glances at Shannon as she accosts Boone, but he doesn't stop. Removing his backpack, Locke walks further into the cave.

Locke sits by the fire, gun case open, staring at the pencil he holds in his hand. As Walt approaches, Locke reminds him, "You're father doesn't want us spending time together." Walt quickly replies, "He's not the boss of me." Locke looks over at Walt and quietly tells him that Michael is his father and he needs to respect him. Then Locke starts packing his gear, adds, "I'm serious, Walt. You're not to come to me anymore."

Michael draws every-one's attention as he approaches, yelling, "Damn it! What is wrong with you!?" Locke gets up and starts to say, "I was just coming to see you", but Michael cuts him off, shouting, "I told you to stay away from my son!" Walt tries to explain he approached Locke, but Michael stops him from talking. Locke explains, whispering to Michael, "I was just giving him this pencil to give to you. I thought you could use it." Locke offers the pencil to Michael, adding, "Consider a peace offering."

Michael draws close and whispers into Locke's ear, "If I catch you with my son again ... I'll kill you."

Locke stares at Michael in the heavy silence, nods his head, then grabbing his gun case, walks away.

A short time later in the jungle, Locke sharpens his knife as Boone sits quietly nearby. Suddenly, Michael approaches demanding, "Locke! Where the hell is he!?" At first Locke is surprised but he explains that Walt is not with them and that he told Walt not to come around him anymore -- that he needed to respect Michael's wishes. At first Michael thinks he's lying, but when he realizes that Walt is indeed not there, he grows concerned and mumbles, "Well, if he's not ..." Before he can finish, Locke gets up and says, "Let's go find your boy."

A short time later, Michael finds Vincent's leash on the ground. Locke comes up behind him and taking the leash, looks around. Then they hear Walt yell in the distance. Locke says softly, "This way" and both men hurry toward the sound of Walt's voice.

As the two men draw closer they hear loud growling sounds and Walt shouting for help. As they clear some trees, they see Walt behind the long roots of a banyan tree and angry polar bear trying to get at him.

Michael starts to yell and rush forward, but Locke grabs him and stifles his yells. Then Locke points upward and whispers, "C'mon, up here ... Michael!" Both men begin to climb the trees.

Locke leads Michael across a limb spanning the trees (which will allow them to reach Walt). Michael calls out to Walt to hang on and then nearly falls. But Locke quickly grabs him until he can regain his balance. Then they press onward. Michael maneuvers past Locke to a point directly above Walt. Then he yells at Locke to throw him the knife. Locke carefully tosses the Bowie knife over to Michael and then watches as Michael drops the knife down to Walt, saying, "If he comes near you, use it."

Locke calls out to Michael and then throws him a vine. Locke has wrapped the other end around a tree limb, holding fast, he braces himself and holds tight as Michael uses the vine to climb down to Walt. Michael wraps the vine around Walt, tells him to hold on tight and then yells to Locke, "Okay, Locke, now! Pull!" Locke slowly pulls Walt upward to safety while the polar bear charges Michael.

Locke looks down as the bear begins to break through some of the banyan roots, drawing closer to Michael. Michael jabs at the bear with the Bowie knife and does some damage as the bear growls in pain, turns and moves off into the jungle.

Michael climbs up to Walt and the two of them hug while Locke makes his way over to their spot. As he draws near, Locke hears Walt asking after Vincent. Breathing hard, Locke replies, "He found his way back to you once, Walt. He will again." Then Locke looks over at Michael, who nods and smiles in appreciation of Locke's help. Locke nods and smiles in return.

During the dark night, Locke and Boone walk close to the jungle fringe. Locke stops and blows the dog whistle he made several days ago. Boone doesn't hear the whistle make a sound and remarks, "I don't think that whistle is working, John." Locke looks keenly around into the night and replies, "You can't hear everything, Boone. The sooner you learn that, the better."

Locke blows the whistle again and they hear rustling noises coming from the nearby jungle growth. Boone stares warily at the foliage and says, "Well, I heard that." Then he calls softly, "Vincent. Vincent is that you?" As Boone whispers Vincent again, Locke draws his knife and stares at the rustling foliage straight ahead as something nears them.

Slowly, a young woman emerges, her clothes are torn and she looks exhausted.

Locke softly says, "Claire?"

Man of Science, Man of Faith – 2.01

Episode immediately follows “Exodus.” All action takes place the same night, presumably a period of several hours.

After we see Desmond reacting to explosion, camera pans up vertical passageway and we see Locke and Jack peering down, Locke holding a torch.

Locke, Jack, Kate and Hurley talk about what the hatch might be, and how deep the passageway is. Locke and Jack disagree about whether to enter the hatch or return to camp. Locke agrees to return to camp.

Hurley confronts Locke about why Locke ignored Hurley’s warning not to blow the hatch door open. Kate points out that the door is marked “Quarantine” on the inside.

Locke and Kate walk through the jungle. Locke dodges Kate’s questions about why he wants to get into the hatch. Kate admits that she also saw the black smoke that appeared to be pulling Locke into a hole five hours previous.

Locke, Jack, Kate & Hurley return to the caves and are greeted by the gathered 815s. Jack explains about the hatch and gives the group a pep talk about sticking together. Locke collects cable and returns to the hatch in spite of Jack’s objections. Locke agrees that it may not be a smart move, but says, “I’m tired of waiting.”

Locke is at the hatch door fiddling with cables when Kate appears behind him. Locke smiles and says he was waiting for Kate. Locke lowers a nervous Kate down the passageway on a cable harness. A bright light shines out of the passageway, the cable is jerked out of Locke’s hands, the light goes out, and Locke pulls up the cable, but no Kate.

Jack descends into the hatch and is looking around. Jack is about to press the “execute” button on a computer keyboard when Locke is heard to say, “I wouldn’t do that.” Jack turns and finds Locke being held at gunpoint by a man Jack incredulously recognizes as Desmond.

Adrift – 2.02

As the floodlight goes out, Locke secures the rope to a tree and starts lowering himself down the hatch.

Stepping in the puddle of water at the bottom of the hatch, he calls out to Kate. Not hearing a reply, he starts down a corridor. As he moves forward his shoes are squeaking, so he takes them off. He continues down the corridor and finds a semiconscious Kate. He’s helping her up when they hear a gun being cocked. Locke turns to find a man holding a gun. The man asks, “Are you him? Are you him?” Locke answers, “Yes. Yes I am.” The man is overjoyed. He can’t believe someone finally came. He asks Locke a riddle. “What did one snowman say to the other snowman?” When Locke’s unable to answer correctly, Locke’s forced to drop his knife.

Locke and Kate try to explain they were in a plane crash 44 days ago. Not believing their story, the man wants Kate to tie up Locke. “Wait. Wait. Wait—you’re tying up the wrong person.” Convincing the man Kate’s a fugitive, Locke ties her up. Out of the man’s vision, he slips a knife in Kate’s pants. Locke puts her in a storage room and closes the door. He still continues to try and get the guy to believe the crash story. Locke tells him abut the plane loosing radio contact and being thousands of miles off course. The man is surprised to find there’s still a world out there. He finally tells Locke his name is Desmond. Desmond is curious to know how many of the survivors have gotten sick. He looks surprised when Locke says, none.

Then Locke hears a beeping sound,. At gun point, he’s taken to a computer room. Locke is told to input our numbers and press the Execute button. Then they hear Jack making his way through the hatch. Still at gun point, Locke is forced out into the open to confront Jack. He’s trying to calm Jack, while Desmond tells Jack to drop his gun.

The 23rd Psalm – 2.10

Next we see Locke teaching Michael how to shoot. He explains to him how it’s not a good idea to go after Walt.

During a break, Locke asks Jack what he is going to do if they catch up to Michael. What right do they have to tell anyone what they can or can’t do?

Locke confronts Sawyer about his name change. “Your name is James, right? James Ford.” He’s curious about why he chose the name of Sawyer. Suddenly they hear gun fire. Taking off in the direction, Locke tries to keep a screaming Jack from giving away their location.

The episode ends with Locke putting the remaining statues in the gun vault, then changing the combination once again.

The Long Con – 2.13

Locke opens the vault so that Jack can stow the pistols and ammunition in the haliburton case. Locke tells Jack he is grateful Jack decided to keep all the guns in one place. Jack notices the Virgin Mary statues. Locke says he kept the heroin because he thought it might have therapeutic value. Locke says he didn’t break the statues because he is superstitious. Jack asks Locke for the combination to the vault. Locke hesitates and tells Jack he hopes the request is for security, in case Locke should “fall off a cliff and break my neck,” and not an issue of trust. Locke suggests that they agree to consult each other before opening the vault. Jack agrees. Locke also suggests they keep medicine in vault.

Locke says good morning to Sawyer and Kate as Locke goes to Claire’s tent. Sawyer makes a leering remark about Locke’s motivation to stay with Claire, telling Kate that even Locke has “needs.”

When Sawyer carries an unconscious Sun into camp, Locke says, “What happenend?”

Locke talks with Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Ana Lucia about the attack on Sun. Locke reminds them that the Others said they would leave the 815s alone if they didn’t cross the line in the jungle. Ana Lucia wants to search the area, using guns. Locke says no guns, fearing that in the confusion they would accidentally shoot each other. Jack agrees to this, at least until Sun wakes up and tells them what happened.

Locke is in the hatch, rifling through the pages of a paperback “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” Sawyer comes in and asks what Locke is doing. Locke claims to be alphabetizing. Sawyer tells Locke that Jack and others are on their way to the hatch to get the guns. When Locke questions Sawyer’s motives in alerting Locke, Sawyer claims it is “to piss off Jack.” Locke asks Sawyer to stay at the hatch to push the button while Locke hides the guns. Sawyer agrees.

Locke is at the beach after dark. Jack approaches and demands to know where the guns are. Locke says he moved them but won’t tell Jack where. Locke says he made a mistake teaching Michael to shoot, and he moved the guns to prevent another accident. As Locke and Jack argue, a gunshot rings out. Attention turns to Sawyer, who approaches with a rifle. Jack asks Locke if he gave Sawyer the guns. Locke says no, he hid them. Jack and Locke look on as Sawyer proclaims that “there is a new sheriff in town,” and they will all have to come to him if they want a gun.

One of Them – 2.14

Locke is sleeping in the bunk in the hatch. Sayid wakes Locke and shows him an unconscious Henry Gale. Henry wakes up. Locke listens as Sayid questions Henry about how he got to the island. Henry says he crashed a balloon on the island four months ago. Jack appears and demands to know what is happening. Locke tells Sayid they should let Jack treat Henry first and then get answers.

Locke and Sayid look on while Jack removes the arrow from Henry’s shoulder. They discuss Henry’s story, which Locke finds pretty convincing. Sayid persuades Locke to change the combination to the vault so that Sayid can interrogate Henry without Jack’s interference. Locke questions Sayid’s motives, asking if he is just angry and looking for someone to punish (presumably over Shannon’s death). Sayid says no.

Locke, Jack and Sayid agree to put Henry in armory to hide him from the other 815s for the time being in order to avoid a panic. They carry Henry into the armory. Locke and Jack leave to get a cot. Sayid closes and locks the door. Jack demands to know what is going on. Locke replies that Jack is raising an army, and the only reason to have an army is for war. Locke says what Sayid is doing is necessary. Jack asks, “what if he’s telling the truth?” Locke replies, “What if he’s not?”

Locke offers to help Jack clean up, to which Jack snaps, “shut up.” Jack notices the pliers are missing.

Locke and Jack hear sounds of Sayid beating Henry behind the armory door. Jack demands that Locke open the door, but Locke refuses. The countdown computer begins to beep. Jack restrains Locke, preventing him from going to the computer until he gives up the combination. Jack says he doesn’t think anything will happen when the timer reaches 0:00. Locke relents and opens the door for Jack. Locke runs to the computer and enters the numbers incorrectly. As Locke back-spaces to fix the number, the counter flips to 0:00. Clunking noises are heard, and red and black hieroglyphics begin to flip over on the timer. When four digits are showing hieroglyphics, Locke enters the last number, hits “execute,” and the timer flips back to 108:00.

Outside the armory, Jack reminds Sayid that Rousseau once thought Sayid was “one of them.” Locke interjects that we are all “others,” depending on your perspective.

Maternity Leave – 2.15

A worried Claire wakes Locke, sleeping near her tent. Claire tells Locke that the baby is sick and she needs Jack. When Claire moves to head for the hatch, Locke tells her he will go instead as it isn’t safe for her in the jungle. Locke promises to send Jack to Claire and then runs into the darkness.

Locke arrives in the hatch, wakes Jack, and tells him the baby has a fever. Jack leaves. Locke slouches on the sofa.

Locke opens the armory door and Jack brings food to Henry Gale. Locke gives Henry a paperback “The Brothers Karamozov.” Henry asks if they have any Stephen King, but Locke says the library is a bit limited.

Outside the armory, Jack questions why Locke gave Henry a book. Locke shrugs and replies, “just something to pass the time.” Locke tells Jack that Hemingway was jealous of Dostoevsky. Locke asks Jack what the long-term plan is for their prisoner. Jack’s answer is that there is no long-term plan for the button, yet they keep pushing it. Jack concludes that they must keep doing what they are doing with Henry, unless Locke has a better idea.

Locke is changing a lightbulb in the hatch. Eko appears and asks to borrow a saw. Locke agrees. Eko notices the cot in the armory.

Locke is washing dishes in the hatch. Jack enters with Eko. Jack says that Eko knows about Henry. As Locke opens the armory door for Eko, Locke tells him not to tell Henry what the alarm is for. Eko asks what it is for, but Locke does not reply. As Eko enters the armory, he hands Locke the Jesus-stick.

Locke brings Henry a bowl of fruit. Henry asks if Locke’s comment about Hemingway was true. They discuss Hemingway and Dostoevsky. Henry asks Locke if he is the genius or the one living in the shadow of the genius. Locke appears taken aback and dodges the question. Henry says, “I just don’t understand why you let the doctor call the shots.” Stung by Henry’s comment, Locke insists that he and Jack make decisions together. Once outside the armory door, Locke angrily throws dishes to the floor. Henry listens with interest.

The Whole Truth – 2.16

Ana Lucia arrives at her tent after a morning run and finds Locke waiting for her. Locke tells Ana Lucia about Henry and asks her to question him. Locke says, “There is a man sitting in my hatch and I want him out.”

Jack comes out of the shower and is annoyed to find Locke there shaving. Locke suggests that Ana Lucia might have more luck questioning Henry. Jack says he will talk to her, but Locke says Ana Lucia is already in talking to Henry.

Jack and Locke wait outside the armory while Ana Lucia questions Henry.

Locke is tinkering with plumbing (?) with a screwdriver when Ana Lucia knocks to get out of the armory. Ana Lucia says she doesn’t know if she believes Henry. Ana Lucia says she will come back tomorrow, she wants to give Henry time to think. Ana Lucia asks Jack if that is okay with him. Jack replies, “I didn’t tell anyone.” Jack doesn’t explain this comment and Locke looks annoyed.

Locke is at the dining table in the hatch when Jack brings Henry out for breakfast. Locke looks surprised. Henry sits at the table across from Locke. Henry seems surprised that they have cereal and asks how old it is. Henry says that the cereal must be his reward for drawing a map for Ana Lucia. Locke and Jack look shocked. Jack asks if Locke knew about this. Locke says no. Henry comments that they have trust issues. Henry delivers the famous “got milk” monologue, speculating what would happen if he were “one of them.” Locke and Jack look non-pleased.

Lockdown – 2.17 (Locke-centric)

Flashback

This episode opens with Locke admiring an engagement ring he’s hidden in a drawer. Exiting to the kitchen, we see Helen who’s wondering why she deserves a picnic. Reading the obits in the paper, she reads Locke’s father has died.

Island

Locke and Jack are discussing going after Ana-Lucia who got Henry to draw a map of his balloon. Disgusted with Jack and the conversation, Locke throws Henry back into the armory.

Later, with Henry safe in the armory, Locke is playing music and riding an exercise bike. Then all of a sudden we hear a beep and a voice comes over a loudspeaker. “20 minutes to lockdown.” He checks the computer and it shows he’s got 47 minutes before he has to push the button. The voice over the loudspeaker gets louder at gets the attention of Henry. “17 minutes to lockdown.”

Flashback

Locke and Helen attend Cooper’s funeral, and notices a silver car watching them. The car sees them and pulls off.

Island

On the island, the countdown continues. “9, 8, 7, 6, 5...” Henry is also curious about what’s happening and suggest maybe Locke should get Jack.

All of a sudden, the blast doors start coming down. Locke manages to get a crow bar under the last door before it closes completely. Using the crow bar, he tries to lift the door but it’s to heavy.

Flashback

We see Locke completing a home inspection for Nadia. This is the same woman Sayid was involved with in Iraq. Getting her signature on the document, he notices the car from the funeral parked across the street. Approaching it, the window rolls down. “Hello son!” It’s Cooper.

Locke and his dad are talking in a bar. Cooper explains why he had to kill himself off. There are two guys after him because he conned them out of $700,000.00. He wants Locke to go to a bank and get the money he has stashed in a safety deposit box. Take $200,000.00 for yourself and bring the rest to a motel by the airport.

Island

Locke convinces Henry to help pry open the blast door. He agrees with one condition. That Locke protects him under any circumstances. Locke agrees.

Both of them are still having a tough time prying open the blast door. Henry uses a toolbox to keep it opened while Locke decides to crawl underneath. The toolbox buckles and Locke’s legs are caught. Henry finds some weights, and stacks them under the door to relieve some of the pressure from Locke’s legs.

Flashback

We see a safety deposit box #1516 being opened. Inside is a pile of cash. The scene switches to Locke arriving at home. He finds Helen and two guys waiting. These guys are the one’s looking for Cooper. They think he may’ve planned his death. Locke convinces them they weren’t close. They leave, but not before looking in the bag he brought home. Finding nothing but papers from work, they leave.

Island

Locke is explaining to Henry the purpose of the hatch, to input the numbers and push the button. He tells Henry to use the vent in the pantry to make his way into the dome/computer room.

Henry heads to the pantry, climbs up on some shelving and tries to remove the grate. However, he falls knocking himself out. The timer starts to beep.

Locke hearing the fall starts calling out to Henry. “Henry, get up, damn it Henry!” He comes to but he’s still groggy. Locke insists he get through that grate, into the vent, down into the dome area. Henry finally gets into the vent as the 1 minute alarm sounds. Locke is panicking and tries to unsuccessfully to lift the doors off his legs. “Henry? Henry?”

Flashback

Locke arriving at the Flightline Motel where he’s suppose top meet Cooper. He knocks on the door and Cooper lets him in. Locke opens the bag, and Cooper starts transferring the money into his own bag. He leaves a couple of stacks on the table. “Your share.” Cooper opens the door to leave and finds Helen standing there. She asks if he’s Cooper. He confirms, and she slaps his face. She looks at Locke, turns and heads down the stairs. Locke follows truing to explain. But, she’s not listening. He tells her how much he loves her. Taking the ring out of his pocket, he gets on one knee and asks her to marry him. She gets in her car a drives away. Just a Cooper gets in a cab and does the same.

Island

“Henry! Henry!” Suddenly the alarm stops, and the lights go out. A black light comes on revealing a map on the blast door. Just as suddenly, the black light goes out and the regular lights come on. The blast doors come up, and we see the damage to one of his legs. He pushes himself away from the door and out of any additional harm.

Locke drags himself into the computer room using his arms. “Henry? Anybody here?” He sees the timer is now showing 107. Henry approaches from the rear and helps him to his feet then to the couch. Locke asks Henry did he make the doors go up. But Henry says he only did what Locke told him to do.

Then Jack, Sayid, and Ana-Lucia enter the hatch. With guns drawn, they force Henry against a wall. Locke tries to explain why Henry is out of the armory and about the lockdown. Then Sayid tells Henry he found the balloon and the remains of the real Henry Gale.

Dave – 2.18

Scene opens with Locke wiggling his toes, reminiscent of “Walkabout.” Locke lies in the bunk in the hatch as Jack examines his injured let. Locke winces in pain. Kate comes in and asks Locke how he is doing. Locke says it depends on Jack’s diagnosis. Jack guesses that Locke has a hairline fracture and tells Locke he must stay off his leg for a couple of weeks. Locke is visibly upset. Jack mentions a wheelchair but Locke quickly vetoes this idea. Kate mentions crutches found in the fuselage and Locke agrees. Kate departs to get the crutches. Locke wonders out loud why Henry didn’t escape when he could. Jack says it is because he thought his story would check out.

Locke hears a gunshot as Sayid nearly shoots Henry. Locke yells to know what happened. Jack responds testily, “I’ve got it covered, John.” Locke hits the bunk in frustration.

Locke on crutches approaches Ana Lucia, who is guarding the armory door. When Ana Lucia says Locke can’t see Henry, Locke replies that he has earned five minutes with the prisoner. Locke enters the armory.

Henry is sitting on the cot, now bound hand and foot. Locke asks the prisoner for his real name. Henry says to stick with Henry, as he has gotten used to it. Locke asks if Henry got caught on purpose, a question Henry never really answers. Henry tells Locke that God doesn’t know where the island is. When Locke suggests that Henry might have been looking for the hatch, Henry tells Locke the hatch is “a joke.” Henry says he never entered the numbers or pushed the button during the lockdown. Henry claims he’s done lying.

S.O.S. – 2.19

The computer timer beeps but Locke seems unaware of it as he concentrates on drawing, attempting to recreate the map from the blast door. Jack appears and asks Locke, “you gonna get that?” Locke enters the numbers, hesitates, and presses “Execute.”

Inside the hatch, Jack is headed to the jungle to try to orchestrate a prisoner exchange, Henry for Walt. Ana Lucia asks to go along but Jack looks at Locke, still working on his drawing, and tells Ana Lucia she needs to stay there.

A frustrated Locke crumples his paper and tosses it aside. Locke hobbles to the armory door and tells Ana Lucia he needs to talk to Henry. Ana Lucia says the door must stay closed because Jack has her gun. Locke yells through the door, asking Henry if he really pushed the button. As Locke pounds on the door, inside Henry smiles creepily.

Locke sits on the beach looking out at the water. Rose joins him and they chat. Rose tells Locke that Bernard is building a big SOS sign for the satellites to see. Locke looks amused and Rose says that Bernard doesn’t know the difference between and errand and a fool’s errand. Locke says that most people don’t. Locke tells Rose he is done with the hatch. Rose encourages him that he will be up and running around the island in no time. Locke says that Jack predicts it will take at least four weeks. Rose replies, “But honey, you and I both know it isn’t going to take that long.” A look of understanding passes between them.

In Rose’s flashback, at the airport a wheelchair-bound Locke picks up a dropped pill bottle and hands it to Rose. Their eyes meet.

Back in the hatch, Locke puts on a record. Ana Lucia tells Locke, “I pushed your button.” Locke replies, “It’s not my button.” Locke goes back to drawing his map with renewed enthusiasm.

Two for the Road – 2.20

In the hatch, Ana Lucia looks over and sees Locke sleeping in the bunk.

Inside the armory, Henry is choking Ana Lucia. Locke hits Henry in the head with his crutch, knocking Henry unconscious. As Ana Lucia gasps for air, Locke quips, “I guess he decided to talk.”

Locke visits Henry in the armory. Henry is now tied down to the floor. Locke asks why Henry didn’t harm him during the lockdown, when Locke was trapped under the blast door. Henry replies, “because you’re one of the good ones.” Not understanding, Locke asks, “good what?” Henry tells Locke that the man in charge is brilliant, but unforgiving. Henry says his people will find him and kill him for failing his mission. Henry tells Locke, “I was coming for you.” Locke is clearly disturbed and confused by this revelation. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Jack, Kate and Michael.

Locke approaches as Jack examines and unconscious Michael. Locke assumes Jack’s plan for a prisoner exchange worked. Jack and Locke discuss whether the Others let Michael go or not. Locke walks away.

Locke is in a chair reading as Jack washes medical instruments. Ana Lucia enters. Jack notices cut on Ana Lucia’s head and asks what happened. Before Ana Lucia can answer, Locke says he left the water on in the bathroom and Ana Lucia slipped and hit her head on the sink. Ana Lucia goes along with the lie. Michael wakes up and Locke and the others go to his side. Locke listens as Michael says he found the Others’ camp that they live primitively, and that Michael believes the 815s can take them.

Locke is drawing on his map. Jack enters and says Locke was right about Henry. Locke says that he hopes the next time Jack is planning something, he will include Locke. They agree to go retrieve the guns from Sawyer.

On the beach, Locke, Jack and Kate approach Sawyer and demand the guns. When Sawyer realizes Ana Lucia took his gun, Locke says, “Jack, I need to tell you something.”

? – 2.21

Everybody arrives at the hatch to find a blood bath. Locke notices Henry is gone. Eko enlists his help in tracking Henry.

Out in the jungle, Locke is trying to figure out what Eko is following. “Are you seeing something I’m not? Hey! I haven’t seen a single track or piece of sign since we left the hatch. What the hell are you following?” Then Eko asks him, “where’s the question mark?” Locke plays it off and starts heading back, but Eko stops him. Locke tells him he doesn’t have to show him anything. Eko head-butts him, and Locke crumbles to the ground.

He regains consciousness, and after a little back and forth with Eko he pulls the map out of his pocket and shows him. Following the markers on the map they end up at the Beechcraft. Locke tells him the story of Boone’s death and they decide to make camp. Eko is poking at what remains of the fire while Locke sleeps. We see Yemi appear to Eko. He tells Eko to follow him. They climb up the cliff where the plane was perched. Getting to the top, Eko sees Yemi in a wheelchair. Eko looses his balance and falls, and we see Locke wake up. Locke was having this havid. This wakes Eko, who realizes Locke, had a dream.

After Locke tells him about the dream, Eko tells Locke the man he saw was his brother, Yemi. Locke goes on to explain that Yemi wanted Eko to follow him up the cliff. Eko immediately starts climbing up the cliff. Reaching the top, Eko doesn’t see anything until he looks down at Locke. There’s a circle where not much is growing. Eko makes it back down and tastes some o the dirt in the circle. “It’s salty.” Searching the ground around the area Eko finds something metallic. Locke helps him push the plane out of the way and discover some type of doors. Locke tries to open the doors but can’t Eko uses the axe he brought along to loosen the latches and starts to open the door. Locke lends a hand and they both peer into a shaft similar to the one that led to the Swan.

Climbing down a ladder they find themselves in another hatch. They find another Dharma symbol, this one with only a circle. Locke turns on some lights. Continuing on, they find a room with some TV monitors. Locke turns one on, and is surprised to find it shows the inside of the Swan hatch. HE turns on more lights and finds a computer terminal which displays, “Print log Y/N”. He presses Y and Execute. Continuing the search, he finds a pneumatic tube and puts his map in it and watches it get sucked away. Eko points out a VHS tape labeled “Orientation”. They sit down and watch.

What they’re told is the participants in the Swan are part of an experiment. Locke’s convinced what he’s been doing over the lasts weeks has been nothing but a test. “I was never meant to do anything. Every single second of my pathetic little life is as useless as that button! You think it’s important? You think it’s necessary? It’s nothing. It’s meaningless….”

Three Minutes – 2.22 – This is a retelling of, The Hunting Party from Michael’s POV.

This episode opens with Michael waking Locke to get a rifle to continue his target practice. Locke gives him one, and while bending over to pick up some bullets, Michael knocks him out.

Jack finds an unconscious Locke on the armory floor, but Michael forces them both into the armory and locks the door.

We next see Locke, Sawyer, and Jack in the jungle with torches. Locke is telling them he’s lost the trail. Then they’re confronted by Mr. Friendly. They’re forced to abandon the chase and leave their guns when Mr. Friendly holds a gun to Kate’s head.

Back at the beach, we see Locke watching Charlie throw the remaining Virgin Mary statues into the ocean.

Live Together, Die Alone – 2.23/24

Locke enters the hatch, which is now manned by Eko. “In a minute that computer’s going to start beeping, and when it does you’re going to let it go. You’re going to let it run down to zero, past zero. And you’re not going to push the button.” Eko informs him he is going to push the button. And, after he stops Locke from trying to destroy the computer, he pushes him out of the hatch.

Charlie comes across Locke whose been crying. Charlie tells him Desmond has returned and he’s a little despondent as well. Finding Desmond drinking on the beach, he asks him, “So, what did one snowman say to the other snowman?” “Smells like carrots.” He tells Desmond what he found in the Pearl, and convinces him what he did for three years was for naught.

The next day, he and a sober Desmond enter the hatch. Desmond shorts out a light switch and when Eko comes to investigate, causes the blast doors to fall, trapping Eko on the other side of the computer room. Eko starts banging on the door trying to get Locke to open the blast doors. Locke and Desmond now sit and wait for the countdown to commence.

Eko threatens to blow open the door with some of the remaining dynamite, but with the assurance from Desmond the door would sustain the blast, they continue to wait. There’s an explosion and Desmond wants to open the doors to make sure no one is hurt. But Locke convinces him it’s a trick.

Locke explains why letting the timer go to zero is so important to him. “…I thought it was my destiny to get into this place. And someone died—a kid. Because he was stupid enough to believe that I knew what I was talking about. And the night that he died for nothing, I was sitting right up there, all alone, beating my hand bloody against that stupid door—screaming to the heavens asking what I should do. And then a light went on. I thought it was a sign. But it wasn’t a sign. Probably just you going to the bathroom.”

Desmond is concerned and asks Locke to tell him everything about the Pearl. Locke show him the printouts brought back to the Swan. Looking them over, he asks Locke when they crashed on the island. Locke replies, “September 22.” “I think I crashed your plane.”

Desmond shows Locke the printout where it shows system failure. He tells him the whole room started to shake and there were hieroglyphics on the timer. He tells him it’s real. He tells him to push the button. Locke doesn’t want to hear it, takes the computer and smashes it on the floor.

Desmond opens the blast door and starts looking through the bookcase and finds a book and pulls out a key. He tells Locke about that night he was banging on the hatch. Locke still doesn’t want top believe. Desmond opens a passage way under the hatch and tells Locke to get as far away as possible.

“I was wrong.”

3.03 Further Instructions

Locke's eyes snap open and stare at the sun peeking through the canopy of trees above. He's laying on the jungle floor, body slightly twisted and legs splayed at an odd angle. He hears someone moving through the foliage and lifts his head. Seeing Desmond, Locke tries to call out, but no sound issues from his mouth. He winces and touches his throat as if in pain. Desmond moves on before Locke can signal him.

Slowly, Locke gets up into a standing position. Gazing around, he hears a sound from above and looks up just in time to ward off a sizeable falling stick. Locke bends over, picks up the stick and recognizes it as Eko's. Carved into the end are several Bible references, the numbers, and the words, "Lift up your eyes and look North".

Locke arrives back at the beach camp and starts cannibalizing his shelter. Gathering up a tarp, rope, and poles, Locke carries them to the now forgotten church site. Charlie approaches Locke at the church site. He sarcastically says, "So you're gone for a whole day after a massive hatch detonation -- you don't call, you don't write?" Locke ignores Charlie and continues to work on something with the materials he removed from his shelter. Feeling rebuffed, Charlie apologizes and asks if he's interrupting something.

Locke looks up and motions to his throat and mouth, shaking his head. Charlie guesses correctly and says, "What, you can't speak John? You're mute?" Locke gives an affirmative nod. Charlie frowns and looks down at the ground as he begins to slowly pace. Not quite sincerely, Charlie says, "I am sorry about that." Then Charlie asks mockingly, "So where are Eko and Desmond? Are they off being mute and building structures, as well?"

Locke gestures to his throat again. Charlie quips, "I know; you can't speak." But Locke continues gesturing until Charlie realizes Locke needs to speak. Charlie tries to guess who Locke needs to talk to. Locke grabs a handful of sand and gestures. Charlie guesses, "Sand? You need to speak to the sand?" Locke thinks for a minute and then waves his arm toward the tree line. Charlie again guesses, "Trees? Yeah, I've heard they're wonderful conversationalists." Frustrated, Locke stomps over toward Charlie, who raises his hand to stop him, and says, "Hey! I don't understand! Who do you need to speak to?"

Locke tries again to communicate. He spreads his arms wide and spins around while Charlie guesses, "Church? Sky?" Then Locke draws a circle on the ground. Charlie says, "Island?" Locke points to say "that's right". "Perplexed, Charlie looks at Locke and slowly says, "Island? You need to speak to the island?" Locke silently nods his head.

Later, Locke walks through the beach camp writing on a pad of paper. He approaches Charlie and holds up the pad with his message written on it. The message reads: I need your help. Charlie bitingly says, "I need your help? Since when do you need my help?"

Charlie jumps down from the platform and continues tying a rope to the structure. Charlie glances at Locke as he writes again on the pad of paper. Charlie reads aloud what Locke has written, "I need you to stand guard?" Then he derisively says, "Oh yeah, so you can talk to the island. Dangerous." Charlie looks directly at Locke and coldly says, "Well, amusing as the mute game invariably is, you are aware, John, that I detest you, aren't you? You do remember repeatedly punching me in the face and accusing me of using heroin when I was not?"

Locke has again written something on the pad of paper and he turns it around, showing it to Charlie. The message reads, "@ the sweat lodge." Puzzled, Charlie asks, "What the sodding hell is a sweat lodge?" Locke, with the pen cap in his mouth, silently motions for Charlie to follow him.

(Flashback - Locke is driving a pick-up truck along a winding rural road. It's raining hard as Locke stops to pick up a hitchhiker. After pulling up alongside the hitchhiker, Locke leans over to the passenger side window and rolling it down, asks where the guy is headed. The hitchhiker replies, "Eureka." Locke tells him he can get him as far as Bridgeville and invites him into the truck. The hitchhiker looks around, nods, tosses his duffle bag into the open truck bed, and gets in the front seat.

Locke puts the truck in gear and continues driving. He introduces himself as "John" and the hitchhiker tells him his name is "Eddie". Locke asks Eddie what's in Eureka. Eddie tells Locke that he heard there was work there cutting timber and that's what he might do as he needs to get away from where he came from. Then he confides that is mother is dead and his dad's a drunk. Locke, smiling slightly, stares at Eddie for a long minute, seemingly assessing the young man.

Just as Locke comments that it has stopped raining, a police siren is heard. Checking the rear-view mirror, Locke sees the police want him to pull over. Eddie asks Locke, "What, did you rob a bank?" Locke glances over at him in amusement, then says, "Afraid so."

After pulling over, the police office approaches the drivers side and asks to see Locke's license and registration. As he hands the papers over, Locke asks if he was speeding. The officer tells him his tail light is out. Then the officer asks them both to step out of the vehicle. Somewhat puzzled, Locke glances at Eddie and then both of them get out of the truck.

The officer asks Locke what is in the truck bed. Locke looks at the officer and replies, "Guns and groceries." Taken aback, the officer stares at Locke for a minute then moves a tarp aside, revealing rifles and handguns. Locke tells the officer the paperwork for the guns is in a red notebook in the duffle. The officer grabs the notebook and inspects the paperwork. Locke, smiling insolently, asks the officer if they are free to go. The officer smiles nastily and tells Locke he can still take him in for picking up a hitchhiker. Eddie immediately pipes up and tells the officer that Locke is his uncle and he had called him to pick him up.

Locke turns and gives Eddie a hard stare and then turns back to the officer. The policeman hands Locke's credentials back to him and tells him, "Get out of here." Locke smiles slightly and nods his head. As the officer drives off, Locke replaces the red notebook in the truck bed and smiling, looks at Eddie on the opposite side. Eddie leans on the truck and asks Locke, "So what is with all the guns........ uncle?")

Locke, dressed only in his pants, squats outside the "sweat lodge" mixing up some paste in a coconut shell. Charlie looks into the sweat lodge and makes a couple of sarcastic remarks. Then he approaches Locke and sees him mixing up the paste. Shocked, Charlie says, "What's that? You're not taking drugs are you, John? I only ask because of the strict zero tolerance policy you've enacted, and I wouldn't want you to have to start punching yourself in the face." Ignoring Charlie's remarks, Locke shows Charlie the pad of paper and this time the message reads "I need u 2 stand gaurd".

Charlie silently reads the message, then snaps, "Yeah, I know, I get it. You're going to go in your little magic hut and I'm going to stand out here in case you devolve into a monkey." Locke begins writing another message, which Charlie reads aloud as he's writing, "Don't come in." Charlie softly says, "Okay". Locke looks at him sharply and emphatically underscores the message. Perturbed, Charlie says, "Okay, I get it!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/thehavidheader.jpg

Locke, clothed only in his pants, sits cross-legged facing the burning fire in the sweat lodge. He takes up the coconut shell containing the mysterious paste he prepared earlier. Locke dips two of his fingers into the paste and transfers it to his mouth. He replaces the coconut shell on the floor while the paste slowly dissolves in his mouth. Then, from a close by bucket, Locke picks up a ladle, brimming with water. He generously drizzles water over the flames and hot stones which bank the fire. As the steam rises, Locke pours the remaining water over his bowed head.

Locke concentrates on the dancing flames before him. It is unknown how much or how little time passes as he stares deeper into the fire. Suddenly, a hand clasps his shoulder! Locke turns and sees a smiling Boone!

Boone greets him, "Hi, John. It's good to see you again." After regaining his composure, Locke motions that he cannot speak and then mouths the words, "I'm sorry." Boone (mocking Locke's earlier words) says, "Oh...you're sorry....that's okay. I was the sacrifice the island demanded." Locke shakes his head "no" and mouths more words, but Boone interrupts him, saying, "Don't worry; you'll speak when you have something worth saying. I'm here to help you find your way again. So you can bring the family back together." Locke's eyes start to tear up as he looks gratefully at Boone. Then Boone smiles and tells Locke, "Come on, I want to show you something."

Locke starts to get up, but realizes that his legs aren't moving. He grabs one of his ankles in disbelief. Panic-stricken, Locke glances at Boone, and then (using his hand), picks up and moves one of his legs. Boone stops him and tells him that he is going need that and points at the spinning wheel of an overturned wheelchair.

Kinetic flashes of the wheelchair uprighting, superimposed flashes of Locke and the wheelchair moving stabilize as Boone starts to push Locke (now seated in the wheelchair) through the Sydney International Airport. As Boone pushes the wheelchair around the escalator and into the main lobby he tells Locke:

John, someone in this airport is in serious danger. You are the only one who can save them.

Locke looks all around and sees a happy family trio - Charlie and Claire, who is holding baby Aaron. He quickly points to them, but Boone says, "Not them, they'll be fine -- for a while."

Again Locke glances all around and spies Sayid, Sun and Jin standing in line. After hesitating for a moment, he points them out. Boone then dismisses Locke's indication of Sayid, Jin and Sun as being in danger, saying, "I think Sayid's got it."

After Locke looks all around in bewilderment, he spies a very jovial Hurley, dressed as an airline employee and entering the numbers into a terminal. Boone tells Locke, "Not Hurley."

Boone then swings the wheelchair around and Locke spies Desmond, dressed as an airline pilot, and flirting with three attractive female flight attendants. Boone flatly comments, "Forget it. He's helping himself."

Boone wheels Locke over to a glass partition. Locke sees Kate, Sawyer and Jack going through the security line. Locke becomes extremely agitated when he sees Ben, dressed as a airline security guard, passing the security wand over Jack. Boone frowns slightly and shaking his head back and forth, tells Locke, "There's nothing you can do for them." After pausing for a moment, Boone says, "Not yet.......First you have to clean up your own mess." Boone's last words, "clean up your own mess", echo over and over again.

Boone comes around to the front of Locke's wheelchair and bends over with his hands braced on his knees. Boone tilts his head to one side and looks sympathetically at Locke. Closing his eyes, Locke bows his head and rubs his hand over his face. He looks up and finds that Boone has disappeared.

Locke looks all around and suddenly finds himself at the bottom of a bank of escalators. Looking up, he sees Boone at the top. As Boone motions for Locke to join him, he says, "Come up here, John."

Locke lays on the escalator and when he reaches the top, drags himself forward. He places his hand in a small pool of blood and notices Eko's blood-covered stick laying in front of him. Closing his hand on the stick, Locke hears Boone tell him to clean it up. Locke looks up and sees Boone, covered with blood from long gashes on his face and torso. His ripped shirt looks clawed. Boone stares at Locke solemnly and then says, " They've got him. You don't have much time."

Boone then appears to be quickly pulled backward and then disappears.

Locke raises his head and finds himself back in the sweat lodge. As he gets up to leave, a growling polar bear with teeth bared lunges at him. Locke throws himself out of the lodge and rolls on the ground, looking back in terror.

Startled, Charlie approaches Locke and asks him if he's all right and what happened. Locke gets up and (deep in thought) walks a few paces. He bends over and picks up his bowie knife. Locke slowly removes the blade and stares intently at it as he raises it right before Charlie's face. Charlie, eyes riveted on the blade, timidly asks, "What are you doing?" Locke hoarsely replies, "I'm going to save Mr. Eko's life."

Later, Locke and Charlie walk through the jungle, looking for Eko's trail. Locke sees something and bends down to retrieve it. Locke says, "Eko's cross...he was dragged this way." In answer to Charlie's question "by what?", Locke replies, "By the polar bear." Charlie objects, stating that Sawyer killed the polar bear. Locke corrects him and says, "He killed a polar bear."

Locke continues following the trail and once again stops. Bending over, Locke touches a small pool of blood with his fingers. He gets up and tells Charlie that he is going to go on alone and Charlie should go back to Claire. Charlie thinks quickly for a minute then tells Locke he'll take his chances. Locke again encourages Charlie to go back by saying, "You don't want to go with me, Charlie. Bad things happen to people who hang around with me."

(Flashback - Locke drives down a dirt road and pulls up to a gate, blocking his way. The gate is decorated with two bleach-out skulls of dead animals and a sign that reads "Warning! No Trespassing Keep Out". A young boy swings the gate open for Locke to enter. As a smiling Locke pulls through, he hands a bag of candy to the young boy and says, "Hey, Bobby".

Locke drives the truck down a canopy tree-lined dirt road. He honks the horn and some people, doing yard work amid the trees, wave in friendly greeting. Locke parks the truck in front of what appears to be a utility building and both he and Eddie exit the vehicle.

Eddie points to a make-shift dome tent structure behind Locke and asks, "What's that?" Locke turns and points to the tent and replies, "That, Eddie, is our sweat lodge. Anybody who wants can go in there, light a fire, get it nice and hot -- meditate." Eddie, after removing his jacket (revealing a Geronimo Jackson t-shirt), asks, "Then what?" Locke is leading Eddie along a path and in response to his question, says:

And then you're supposed to figure out what to do with your life -- you know, what direction to take -- go on in there and figure out if you're a farmer or a hunter.

Eddie thinks about that for a minute and then asks, "So, which are you, John?"

Locke just silently smiles at Eddie and keeps walking. They arrive at a long picnic table where a group of laughing people are seated, getting ready to eat. Approaching the table, Locke introduces Eddie, saying, "Hey, Mike, Jan, this is Eddie. He's looking for some logging work, but I convinced him to come home and have some supper with us first". Mike and Jan (and everyone else) are very friendly and welcome Eddie, saying any friend of John's is welcome. Locke and Eddie sit down at the table, and Mike comments on Eddie's Geronimo Jackson t-shirt. Eddie tells him it belongs to his father. In response, Mike says that his father has good taste. Mike stands up and introduces Eddie to everyone else and then asks Locke to say grace.

Locke stands up, closes his eyes and with clasped hands prays:

Thank you, Lord. Thank you for the food and the friends. And thanks for the rain today so that Adam will stop grumbling about the drought [people chuckle]. And for me, thank you for helping me stop being so angry. And for helping me find a real family -- because they're a hell of a lot better than the one I used to have. So, let's eat. Amen.

Locke sits back down and starts to pass a bowl of food to his new friend. Eddie turns to Locke and solemnly says, "Thank-you......Thank-you.")

Still following the trail, Locke leads Charlie up a hill. They stop at the top and look down into a huge hole - all that is left of the Swan Station. In a hushed voice, Charlie asks if that is the hatch. Locke says it is and it looks like it imploded. Both turn silently and continue following Eko's trail.

Going down hill, Locke comes upon a dead boar. Charlie, following behind Locke, sees the dead boar and exclaims, "Whoa!" Locke immediately turns and indicates silence. Charlie draws alongside of Locke and asks, " What's that?" Locke replies, "It's an active kill -- meaning that whatever was eating this is going to be back for more." Charlie retorts, "If you want to say polar bear you can just say it." Locke sees something on the ground and picks it up. It appears to be a piece of white fur. Locke turns to Charlie and says, "Alright, polar bear." Suddenly they hear a loud growl and something crashes in the jungle close by. Charlie fearfully looks at Locke, who yells, "Run!"

They run quickly through the jungle with the roaring polar bear in hot pursuit. Breaking through to a small clearing, Charlie and Locke pause to catch their breath as the sounds of the bear have vanished. Suddenly there's a rustling from the nearby foliage. Locke draws his knife and throws it into the dense jungle growth. A man yells out! Charlie stares in silent shock. Locke and Charlie approach the jungle foliage. Locke draws back some vines and reveals Hurley, standing frozen in place, with a canteen raised toward his pursed lips. Immobilized, Hurley just stares at the knife protruding from his raised canteen. He raises his eyes, looks at Charlie and Locke and in a shaky voice says, "Dude."

A short time later, Hurley walks through the jungle with Locke and Charlie. Hurley tells them that the "others" have Kate, Jack and Sawyer and the captors sent him back to tell everyone else that they cannot ever go over there. Then he informs Locke and Charlie, "Oh, and that dude we had in the hatch, Henry -- he was there. He's, like, their leader." Locke pulls up short when he hears that and everyone stops walking. Hurley asks, "So, what do we do?"

Locke tells Hurley to do what they told him to do - go back to camp and tell everyone. As they start walking again, Hurley questions Locke's instructions and asks if they aren't going to do something. Locke tells him, he's already doing something and once again tells Hurley to go back to the beach. Charlie chimes in and tells Hurley that Locke is trying to save Eko from a bear. Charlie and Locke walk onward, leaving Hurley behind, yelling "What bear?".

Locke finds another tuft of white fur. Unsheathing his knife, he points in a direction and tells Charlie, "This way." Charlie, looking scared and glancing all around, chatters nervously to Locke about polar bears: "You know, when I used to get high, I'd watch nature programs on the Beeb. Polar bears are meant to be quite clever. Very clever. They're like the Einsteins of the bear community." Locke doesn't respond as he and Charlie carefully follow the trail. Locke slows as he sees an entrance to a cave. He peers in cautiously, glances back at Charlie and then stares at the entrance to the cave.

(Flashback - Locke and Eddie are walking through an open utility building. They pass a young woman walking in the opposite direction. Eddie tells Locke the young woman likes him. Locke laughs and says she doesn't. They go back and forth - does - doesn't - several times until Locke tells Eddie she's half his age and he'd be better off with her. Eddie then crosses a line when he jokingly says, "Uh-uh, no. Lizzy's too granola for me. What she really wants is a daddy -- like everyone else here. You should take advantage of that." As Locke gets their working gear (slings and baskets), he tells Eddie, "That's not really funny, Eddie." As Locke walks off, Eddie apologizes saying it was a joke.

Eddie catches up to Locke and asks him why he never talks about his dad. Locke replies, "Nothing worth talking about." As they walk along, Eddie looks over at a greenhouse where men are off-loading fertilizer. He asks Locke what's going on over there. Locke glances over at the greenhouse as one of the men drops a heavy bag. Eddie starts to walk over to offer his help, but Locke hurriedly grabs his arm and quickly tells him no, they are ok. Then Locke prompts Eddie to follow him as they have "orchard duty".

Later, returning with full baskets of peaches, Eddie presses Locke and asks, "What's the big secret?.....The greenhouse -- what have you guys got in there? What are you hiding? Because every time I go near it, you and just about everyone else acts all weird." Locke sternly tells Eddie, "Look, you're a guest here. These things take time." Then Eddie and Locke argue:

EDDIE: I've been here for 6 weeks.
LOCKE: Nothing's...
EDDIE: I'm not blind, man. Did you forget you had a duffle bag full of guns when you brought me here?
LOCKE: Mike and Jan welcomed you here with open arms. They feed you. They give you a place to stay.
EDDIE: And Mike and Jan fold their hands every night before chow and talk about how we're family. But your family's got too many secrets. Now, I see the fertilizer going into that greenhouse. I know what's going on, and I want in.
LOCKE: In on what?
EDDIE: Whatever you guys are trying to blow up.

Stunned, Locke stares at Eddie and then starts to laugh. He turns away and still laughing starts to take a bite of a peach. Eddy, perplexed at Locke's response, asks, "What's so funny?"

Still chuckling, Locke tells him "nothing" and he will talk to Mike and Jan.)

Charlie peers into the cave and then approaches Locke, suggesting they do this now while the bear is still probably out finishing his lunch. Locke tells Charlie that he is not going in there - that he (Locke) is doing it alone. Charlie becomes defensive and remarks, "You don't get to tell me what I can't do. If I want to go in there, I'll go in there." Locke asked him why he wants to go in there. Charlie gets mad and tells Locke he doesn't need a reason. Locke tells Charlie to go back. Charlie argues and insists on staying, adding that Locke doesn't have a reason to go in there either. Locke turns to Charlie and says, "I'm going in there because I'm supposed to go in there."

Locke empties a bottle of water onto some dirt on the ground. Using both hands he rubs the resulting mud on his arms and face. Charlie suggests that if all goes according to plan they probably won't even see the polar bear. Locke grabs a can of hair spray and puts it in his pocket. Smiling, Charlie quips, "Hair spray? Now, I hate to be the one to point this out to you..." Locke smiles and says, "It's not for me."

Grabbing the torch and lighter, Locke looks over at Charlie, draws a deep breath of courage and smiles. Locke walks over to the entrance of the cave, peers in for a moment and then lights the torch. He pockets the lighter, draws his knife and then cautiously enters the dark cave. The cave's entrance appears to be a short tunnel. Locke hunches over as he climbs over a larger rock and steps into a higher ceiling chamber. He picks his way carefully as he moves forward. Suddenly his foot strikes something metallic. Locke bends down and picks up a child's toy dump truck. The full implications of the toy's presence in the bear's cave crashes in on Locke and hurts his heart. Respectfully, he places the truck back on the floor of the cave. Looking up with steeled determination, Locke rises and presses forward.

(Flashback - Locke walks nonchalantly towards the greenhouse, whistling a happy tune and twirling a stick. He greets the greenhouse guard and asks if Mike and Jan are in. The guard tells him they are and they've been looking for him. Perplexed at that information, Locke remarks that it's good timing and enters the greenhouse.

Mike and Jan are arguing about what to take as they hurriedly pack up baggies of pot, cash and bank records. Puzzled, Locke looks around and asks what's going on. Mike stops long enough to tell him that he "screwed up big time". Locke has no clue what Mike is talking about and stammers out several questions ending with, "Are you leaving? Why?" Jan shoves a file at him and vehemently says, "That is why, you idiot!"

As Locke looks at the file, Mike tells him that Eddie is a cop. The file reveals a Humbolt County Sheriff identification record on Eddie, who really is Officer Edward F Colburn (beginning date of service 06-12-1994). Mike asks Locke if he knows how much jail time they would get for that much weed. Locke starts to protest, saying that Eddie was just a hitchhiker on his way to Eureka. Jan angrily interrupts and tells Locke, "He was waiting for you, John. He has been here for 6 weeks gathering evidence because you brought him here." Locke appeals to Mike saying "that's impossible." Mike tells Locke he was played for a sucker and now everything is over.

Locke looks back down at the file in his hands and then softly says, "No...wait. No, wait...wait." Getting no response from Mike or Jan, Locke - losing his temper - yells, "Stop!" Mike and Jan stop and turn toward Locke. Then Locke tells them, "We don't know what he's told them. He hasn't even been in here yet. If he's still gathering evidence and trying to make a case then it's not too late." Jan shouts, "Not too late for what?" Locke angrily retorts, "To protect us. To protect all of us. It's not too late to fix this. I can fix this."

Mike walks up to Locke and staring eye to eye asks, "How are you going to do that, John? Huh?")

Locke enters another chamber of the cave. There are bones and skulls, some human, scattered over the chamber's floor. A piece of cloth with "The Pearl" insignia is draped across one of the skeletons. Locke notices movement and sees Eko, barely conscious, lying on the ground. Locke calls his name and Eko murmurs, "John." An echo of a dislodged rock is heard and then a growl. Suddenly, Eko is pulled from sight! Locke races after him and grabs his arms and looking up, sees a ferocious polar bear at Eko's feet. Locke throws a sharp rock at the bear, hitting it in its face. The bear roars!

Losing no time, Locke grabs his torch and the can of hair spray from his pocket. Holding the torch out in front, Locke sprays the aerosol past the flame, creating a blow-torch! The flames shoot out into the bear's face and the bear turns tail and runs away howling in pain. Quickly, Locke helps Eko up and they race back through the cave toward the entrance. Breaking free into the open, Locke goes down on one knee as a wounded and exhausted Eko falls to the ground. With Charlie's help, Locke pulls Eko up and the two of them, carry him away from the cave.

Charlie looks cautiously around as he and Locke carry Eko between them through the jungle. Locke notices Charlie looking around and strikes up a conversation:

LOCKE: I burned that bear pretty good. I don't think he's going to be coming after us.
CHARLIE: Now that we've survived this suicide mission are you going to tell me what you saw?
LOCKE: What I saw?
CHARLIE: In the spirit tent.
LOCKE: I saw Boone.
CHARLIE: Boone? What did he have to say for himself?
LOCKE: He told me I had to clean up my own mess.
CHARLIE:Well, dead as he may be, I agree with Boone. If you kept pushing that button like Eko told you to...
LOCKE:We wouldn't have had to save him in the first place. Yeah, Charlie, that's what cleaning up your own mess means.
CHARLIE: Spoken like someone who's had a few too many messes to clean.

(Flashback - Locke and Eddie, carrying rifles, are hunting for deer in the woods. Eddie strikes up a conversation and asks Locke if he's talked to Mike and Jan yet. Locke quietly tells him he did and they said for Locke to bring Eddie to the greenhouse after supper and they would explain everything. Locke turns and looks at Eddie, who says "Cool, that's great!" Locke sees something behind Eddie and points in that direction. Eddie spins around and brings his rifle into an aiming position.

Eddie whispers to Locke, "What, did you see something?" - unaware that Locke has raised his rifle and is aiming it at the back of his head. When Locke doesn't answer him, Eddie turns around and sees Locke pointing his rifle at him. Calmly, Eddie asks Locke, "What are you doing?" Locke asks Eddie if he knew it would be him (Locke) driving the truck and if "they" chose him. Eddie protests to Locke, saying he doesn't know what he's talking about and at the same time slowly starts to raise his rifle. Locke catches his movement and informs him that he didn't load Eddie's rifle.

Eddie drops the rifle and holds his arms out to the side. Locke says, "So how about you just answer the question, Eddie?" Eddie then admits that they did choose him. Locke sighs and asks why. Eddie responds, "Because you hadn't been here long, didn't have a criminal record, and psyche profiles said you would be amenable for coercion." When Locke questions, "amenable for coercion", Eddie raises his voice and says, "Lower the gun, John. Okay? This isn't personal."

Locke explodes and yells, "What's not personal?" Eddie starts walking backwards very slowly. Locke coldly tells him to stop. Eddie stops but calmly and firmly tells Locke, "I'm sorry, John, but you're not going to shoot me. You're not a murderer. You're a good man. You're a farmer." Locke laughs quietly and shaking his head says, "Nope. Not a farmer.....I was a hunter." He nods his head and with tears in his eyes softly says more firmly, "I'm a hunter." Eddie calmly lowers his arms, saying, "I'm going to walk away now, John." Eddie, turns his back to Locke and walks slowly away.

Locke trains his rifle on Eddie as he retreats through the woods. Locke starts to shake as he grips the rifle. His face reflects the inner struggle as he tries to pull the trigger and "fix things". Locke lowers his rifle, unable to murder the man that betrayed his "family".)

A short time later, Charlie stops Locke and asks if he hears something. They both hear the rushing water of a nearby stream. Locke suggests they put Eko down and get some water for him. They gently lower Eko so he's resting against a vine covered tree. Locke gets out an empty water bottle and starts to go get water, but Charlie stops him and volunteers to go instead. Charlie takes the bottle from Locke and walks off to the stream.

Locke sits down next to the unconscious Eko. Glancing over at him, Locke apologizes, "I'm sorry. Sorry I ever doubted you. Sorry I gave up on my faith in the island. I messed up. Now our people are captured -- if I'd just listened to you -- if I'd just let you keep pushing the button. I could have gone with them, protected them. I could have saved them."

Eko opens his eyes and says, "You can still protect them. You can still save them." Locke protests, telling Eko, he doesn't even know where they are. Eko stares at Locke, then replies:

You will find them. After all, you are a hunter, John.

Hearing Charlie return, Locke looks away from Eko toward Charlie, who asks, "Did you say something?" Locke tells Charlie that Eko is awake, but when he looks back, Eko is unconscious. Locke pours some water into Eko's mouth but it doesn't revive him. Charlie, looking concerned, softly suggests, "Maybe we should just get him back, John." Locke agrees.

Later, Charlie and Locke struggle carrying Eko the last remaining steps to the shelter at the beach camp. The other survivors hurry to them as Charlie takes Eko into a tent. During the ensuing commotion, one of the redshirts (Nikki) says, "We need Jack!" Hurley responds, "Jack's not coming back. They've got him."

A flurry of questions follows, asking about the other missing members of their camp and who "they" are. Locke answers saying, "They are the Others. And, yes, they've taken Jack, and Kate and Sawyer." When asked about Sun, Jin and Sayid, Locke responds, "I don't know. I'm going to find our friends. I don't know how yet, but I will. We're going to find them. All of them. And then we're going to bring them home. But first things first, we've got to look out for Mr. Eko. So, Paulo and Nikki, bring towels and water. Claire, we've got to clean him up so bring all the first aid supplies." Locke turns and walks into the tent where Eko is lying.

3.05 The Cost of Living

The flames from Eko's burning shelter draw the other survivors, including John Locke. Running up to the shelter, Locke calls out Charlie's name and asks if everyone is all right. Panting for air, Charlie says everyone is fine. Then Locke asks about Eko. Still gasping for air, Charlie begins to tell Locke that he and Hurley pulled him out - but stops as he turns to point toward Eko, who has now disappeared. Mystified, Charlie calls Eko's name several times as he looks around. Locke glances around and then stares thoughtfully at the spot Eko was last seen.

Day 72 (December 2, 2004)

The next morning, Locke, Sayid and Desmond sit on the beach talking. Locke tells Sayid that he thinks he knows how to find Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Sayid asks Locke why Desmond is included. At Locke's urging Desmond tells Sayid that he thinks the computer in the Swan Station was not just for pushing the button, rather it could be used to communicate with the other stations. Sayid turns to Locke and says, "This is fascinating, but you just told me the hatch exploded." Locke smiles slyly and says, "One of them did." Sayid deduces that Locke wants to try and communicate with the "others".

Charlie and Hurley interrupt the conversation when they arrive and announce that there is no sign of Eko after having looked around in the nearby jungle. Locke asks Charlie if Eko said anything when he pulled him out of the burning shelter. Charlie replies, "Nothing coherent...just my brother...my brother.." At this news, Locke straightens up and springs into action. He tells Sayid, "Pack your gear, we're going to the computer." As Locke strides away, Charlie calls after him, "But what about Eko?" Locke turns and says, "We'll catch up. We're all going to the same place."

Shortly afterward, Locke (followed by Sayid and Desmond) approaches the community "kitchen" area. He announces to everyone standing around, "We're heading out to the Pearl Station. There's a computer there that might help us find our people. Anybody want to come along?" Hurley asks Locke, "What do you mean - anybody want to come along?" Locke explains that it's a free island and anyone can join them. Hurley tells Locke that's not what Jack would have done. Jack would have gone alone or taken Sayid or Kate. Locke listens as he adds supplies into his backpack and then he turns to Hurley and says, "Yeah, well... I'm not Jack." Shouldering his backpack, Locke walks away and says, "The more...the merrier."

Locke is kneeling by the water trough, filling water bottles, when Desmond approaches him and says, "Do you mind if I ask you a question, brotha?" Locke says, "Shoot". Desmond asks, "Are we going off to poke at a computer?" Desmond lifts his head, surreptitiously glances back toward the way he came, and turning back to Locke continues, "Or, are we going after your man, Eko?" Locke smiles and says, "Two birds - one stone. Eko is headed to the plane that crashed on top of the entrance to the Pearl Station." Straightening up, Desmond stares at Locke and says, "Well that's quite a coincidence." Locke shoulders his backpack and says, "Don't mistake coincidence for fate." Then he walks off, leaving Desmond staring thoughtfully after him.

Later in the jungle, Locke and the rest of the party come across Eko on the other side of a small stream. The group continue through the jungle with Locke and Eko in the lead. Locke observes Eko struggling along and when he stumbles, Locke reaches out for him, saying, " Hey! Are you sure you are all right? We can stop for a bit and catch our breaths." Eko ignores him and presses forward. Locke then remarks, "You're heading for the plane wreckage aren't you? Charlie heard you call out for your brother before you left the camp. Is that what you're doing out here, looking for Yemi?" Eko whirls around and pins a surprised Locke against a tree with his stick. Drawing his knife, Eko raises it and presses the sharp blade against Locke's throat and says coldly, "Do not speak my brother's name again." Locke calmly looks Eko in the eye and asks:

What are you so afraid of, Eko?

Some time later, the group arrives at the crashed Beech craft site. Locke tells Sayid that the hatch is over by the plane. Then he suggests that Sayid take everybody down. Sayid asks Locke what he's going to do. Locke tells him he'll be there in a minute. He then follows Eko to the other side of the plane.

Eko begins removing some rocks that are blocking the side entrance to the plane. Curious about Eko's behavior, Locke asks, "So, what exactly did you see back there?" When Eko does not respond, Locke continues," I saw it once, you know." Eko then asks him what he saw. Locke responds with a voice full of wonder, "I saw a very bright light. It was beautiful." Eko briefly stops moving the rocks and looking darkly at Locke, shakes his head and replies, "That is not what I saw."

Puzzled at Eko's response, Locke begins to help him remove the stones. Then both men, with muscles straining, roll a large boulder away from the entrance, revealing the interior of the burnt out plane. Locke waits quietly while Eko enters the plane. A few minutes later, a shaken Eko exits the plane and tells Locke his brother is gone. Locke calmly tells Eko that his brother's body could have burned or animals could have gotten to the remains. Eko turns, sits on the boulder and stares at a picture of himself and Yemi as children. Locke approaches and asks if Eko wants to go into the Pearl with them. After Eko tells him that he will wait for them, Locke hands Eko the cross he found while looking for him. After placing the cross in Eko's hand, Locke turns and walks toward the Pearl entrance.

Commentary: We've just witnessed the conversation where Locke and Eko see two different things - Locke: a bright light and Eko: smokie - dark and foreboding cloud-like creature. I wonder if Locke would have seen the remains of Yemi's body if he had looked into the plane?

Later, in the Pearl Station, Locke holds a light for Sayid as he works on the wiring to the monitors. Sayid informs Locke that the wiring is a closed system or a dead end. At this point, Nikki (after listening to the Pearl Orientation video) asks if the other TV monitors could be hooked up to some of the other hatches. Recognizing this as an obvious conclusion, Locke turns to Sayid and says, "Well, I'm suddenly feeling very stupid." Sayid says he might be able to patch in one of the other feeds and returns to the wiring. As Locke again shines a light on the work area, everyone is startled by the loud sound of a flushing toilet. Paulo emerges from one of the panels and says, "Ahhhh. The uh, toilet still works." Irritated, Locke turns back to assisting Sayid.

Sayid makes a connection and asks if there's anything yet. Locke turns and looks at the bank of monitors - all displaying static. Sayid then tries another connection and one of the monitors clears to show a computer room similar to the one in the Swan station. The scene changes and shows a man with an eye patch staring into the monitor. Everyone watches silently as the eye-patch man reaches up and with a turning motion disables the surveillance camera supplying the feed. As the monitor returns to static, Locke turns, smiles and says, "I guess he'll be expecting us."

Suddenly they hear the monster's "whistle". Locke dashes for the exit with Sayid and Desmond close behind. Locke is first on the scene and finds Eko lying, mortally wounded, on the jungle floor. Locke kneels down by Eko's motionless body and gently turns him over. Sadly, Locke comforts the dying man as he gingerly pats his chest and says, "It's okay...it's okay." Locke leans down and places his ear close to Eko's mouth as Eko tries to talk. Locke raises up and looks strangely at Eko. Then, Locke places his hand over Eko's eyes, forever closing them.

After a few moments, Sayid takes a step forward and asks, "What did he say, John?" Locke looks up at Sayid and solemnly says:

He said, 'We're next.'

3.06 I Do

Locke finds Eko's cross laying at the foot of a tree. Picking it up, he gazes thoughtfully at the dangling cross. Then Locke turns it over (examining both sides) and grasping the cross in his fist, rises and walks over to the group gathered around Eko's now shroud-covered body. As he draws near, Nikki asks what happened to Eko. Locke turns away and looking down at the cross in his hand, replies, "Must've been an animal. Maybe one of the bears." Nikki then asks if they are going to carry Eko back to the beach camp. Locke glances at her and then answers, "No. Were gonna bury him here."

At this news, Desmond (looking surprised) asks, "Are we?" Locke explains, "The people back at camp... there have been just a few too many funerals lately. Nobody needs to see him like this. I'll slip back to the beach and get a couple shovels." Sayid quickly interjects, saying, "I'll come with you." Locke protests saying, "No, I'll be back in an hour." Sayid raises his voice, saying, "It's not safe to go alone, John." Unable to deny Sayid's statement, given the lie he just told Nikki, Locke acquiesces, saying, "I appreciate your concern." Then both he and Sayid start off into the jungle.

Following Locke through the jungle, Sayid asks bluntly, "So - what killed Eko?" Locke stops, glances back at Sayid and removes his backpack, retrieving a bottle of water. He tells Sayid, "Folks back at the beach call it The Monster. I don't really have a name for it. You don't believe in monsters."Sayid, looking around, states, "I believe in what I can see." He starts to move off but after glancing at Locke, stops and says, "but obviously you have." Locke swallows some water and nods in the affirmative. Sayid then says, "So why don't you tell me what you think it is?"

Sayid and Locke's conversation
Locke Might be what brought us here.
Sayid So you believe that this monster decided that Eko was supposed to die?
Locke I believe Eko died for a reason. I just don't know what it is yet.

Locke starts to move onward through the jungle, but Sayid's next words ring out in the stillness and stop him in his tracks.

Sayid Is that why you lied? ...... We're not headed back towards the camp are we, John?
Locke Sure we are. We just need to take a little detour first.

Later, the small group (Sayid, Paulo, Nikki, Desmond and Locke) gather around Eko's lonely grave. Locke stands at the head of the grave and says some final words. "When the hatch exploded, your prayer stick fell out of a tree right on top of me. So Sayid and I went out to get it cause it didn't feel right to bury you without it. I'd like to think that you died for a reason Mr. Eko. Just hope it's not too long before we find out what the heck it might be."

Locke frowns slightly and kneels down. Locke says, "Rest in peace, Mr. Eko." Then he picks up a rock and begins to drive Eko's stick (a fitting grave-marker) into the ground. As he hits the stick, Locke begins to thank Eko, saying, "Thank you for helping me find my..." Locke stops in mid-stream as he realizes what's carved onto the stick. "Lift up your eyes and look North. John 3:05"

3.08 Flashes Before Your Eyes

Locke quietly waits with Sayid in a small clearing in the jungle close to the beach campsite. Desmond approaches followed by Hurley and Charlie. After looking at their solemn faces, Charlie asks, "What happened?" Locke sighs and replies, "Eko is dead." Sayid explains that they found his body and buried him yesterday in the jungle. Charlie then asks how he died. Locke replies simply, "The island killed him." Charlie presses him for an explanation of "the island killed him". Locke retorts, "You know what it means." Then Locke continues speaking and tells Charlie and Hurley that since the rest of the survivors are "on edge" with Jack gone, that they will look to Hurley and Charlie when they hear the news of Eko's death. Therefore, they want Charlie and Hurley to try and help keep everyone calm.

Suddenly, Desmond bolts from the group and runs toward the beach. Locke and everyone else runs after him. Locke, running, arrives on the beach and sees Desmond take off his shirt and shoes and dive into the ocean. Looking further out to sea, Locke exclaims, "There's someone else out there." Then Locke watches as Desmond rescues the swimmer who turns out to be Claire.

Desmond returns to the beach and starts to perform CPR. Locke kneels close by and watches as Desmond successfully revives Claire. Locke offer to help Desmond carry Claire but Desmond tells him that he's got her. Locke then turns and runs ahead of them back to the campsite.

3.10 Tricia Tanaka is Dead

Locke is seated just outside Jin's shelter, talking with Sun when he notices a commotion near the shore. Looking toward the ocean, he smiles as he sees Sawyer and Kate returning to the beach campsite. Locke approaches Sawyer and patting him on the shoulder, welcomes him "home". (commentary: We cannot hear what is being said during this scene.)

Later, Locke and Sayid are following Kate as she walks toward the water trough. Sayid asks why Jack said not to come back. Kate then tells them Jack probably didn't want his sacrifice to be for nothing. Kate then confirms that the "others" released Michael and Walt, giving them a boat. Sayid asks if she saw any other boats. Kate replies, "No, but something tells me they didn't give away their only one."

Locke squats down next to Kate, who is now filling a water bottle and asks, "So, they can leave the island?" Kate replies, "I don't know, John." Then Kate tells them the "others" live on the same island they do and they (Kate and Sawyer) escaped with a kid named Karl, who would have taken them there but Sawyer let him go. Surprised, Sayid asks why they let Karl go. Kate tells them they have to ask Sawyer that. Then as she starts to walk away, Sayid asks where she is going. Kate tells them she's going to get Jack back - she's owes him that - and she's going to get help. Locke calls after her, "Help from who?" Kate doesn't reply, but keeps on walking.

Later that night, Locke and Sayid, (with torches lit) come upon Kate in the jungle. Sayid asks Kate, why she didn't ask them for help in finding Jack. Kate replies, "Two reasons... you don't know where to look and... you're not motivated!" Then Kate says she doesn't blame them for not wanting to risk more lives just to get Jack back.

Locke steps forward and says, "You're wrong!" Kate angrily replies, "Oh, really? Then why didn't you come after..." Locke cuts her off, saying, "Not about the motivation, just about knowing where to look. We got a compass bearing. And I'm pretty sure if we follow it...it'll lead us right to them." Kate asks, "How?" Sayid sarcastically interjects, "Because of the way the sunlight hit Mr. Eko's stick when John was burying him." Kate then looks dubiously at Locke, who replies, "So now you know our secret. How about you tell us yours?"

Suddenly gun shots ring out and both Locke and Sayid pull their guns and point them into the dark jungle! Kate cries out, "No no, don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Then Kate turns to the jungle in the general area where the shots came from and yells, "It's all right! It's safe! We're just here to talk! You can come out!"

Locke lowers his gun as Danielle emerges from the dark jungle. Danielle asks what they are doing there. Kate tells her that she is heading for the "others" camp and needs someone who knows the island. Danielle then asks, "What makes you think I have an interest in helping you?" Locke listens quietly as Kate answers Danielle, "Because they had me. And they would have never let me go. Probably would have killed me if I hadn't escaped. And the girl who helped escape...she was about 16 years old. And her name was Alex. I'm pretty sure that she's your daughter."

3.11 Enter 77

Four people, walking quietly in single file make their way through the dense jungle growth, Sayid leads the way, clearing the trail with a machete. He's followed by John Locke, who carefully looks all around as he makes his way forward. Locke is followed by Kate with Danielle bringing up the rear. They reach a small clearing, where Sayid stops and tells everyone, "We need to eat." Locke removes his backpack and asks if they're still on course. Sayid checks the compass and in a condescending manner affirms that they are still heading North on a bearing of 3 - 0 - 5. Not missing Sayid's attitude, Locke quips, "I'm sensing a lack of confidence." Irritated, Sayid quickly replies, "Sayid We've been walking for 2 days...following a compass bearing provided by the carvings on a stick!"

Both Locke and Sayid crouch down and continue the conversation. Sayid questions following this direction hoping to chance upon the location of the "others". Locke, looks all around and calmly tells Sayid that he doesn't know what they will come upon but the 3 - 0 - 5 bearing is all they've got. Sayid gets up quickly, saying that he's going to find some fruit and then looking at Locke, says, "And then, John, we're going to have a rational conversation regarding our next move." Locke nods his head and then looks down in thought as Sayid enters the jungle foliage.

A short time later, Sayid crouches down in the foliage, inspecting a blue house through binoculars. Kate, Danielle and Locke are gathered closely behind him and peer out at the "farmyard" scene in front of them. Locke asks Sayid, "Are you sure it's completely isolated?" Sayid reassures him that he has circled the house and there's nothing but jungle surrounding it. Sayid hands the binoculars to Locke. John looks through the binoculars at a satellite dish. He asks Sayid if it still works. Sayid tells them that satellite dish would have broadcasting capability for thousands of miles. Then Sayid asks Danielle if this is the radio tower she had mentioned before. Danielle replies, "I have never been here before."

Locke listens quietly as Kate asks Sayid about the man in the house noting that Sayid said he had seen him before. Sayid replies, "On a video feed from The Pearl station." Kate then asks, "So who is he?" Sayid hands Kate his rifle saying, "Only one way to find out." He then tells her if he's unarmed the man won't feel threatened, but just in case she can cover him from their current position. Danielle turns to leave but Kate stops her by asking where she's going. Danielle replies, "I have no interest in that man inside the house. I have survived on the island precisely by avoiding these types of encounters. I'll wait for you by the stream, for those of you who survive." Locke watches Danielle leave and then prepares to help cover Sayid as he moves forward, unarmed.

Locke loads his gun and moves quietly into a better position as Sayid, hands in the air, walks slowly toward the house. Sayid stops to stare at a cat sitting on table. Suddenly a shot rings out! Sayid, wounded, falls backward. Kate jumps up and starts to run out but Locke stops her whispering, "Kate! No!" Kate protests saying that Sayid has been hit, but Locke pulls her back whispering "Not yet! You want to get shot too?"

The man with the eye patch, rifle trained out the window, yells, "I didn't cross the line! We had a truce! This is my land! You said I could stay here!" Sayid, lying on the ground in great pain, stammers, "I'm not ... I'm not who you th ... who you think I am. My name is Sayid Jarrah! I was on a plane that crashed here months ago!" The eye patch shouts, "A plane?" Sayid yells, "I'm unarmed, I swear!" The eye patch man hesitates and then yells, "Stay right there!" He then closes the shutter as he moves away from the window.

As soon as the eye patch man closes the shutter, Locke and Kate spring into action. They swiftly run towards Sayid's position. As the eye patch man opens the door and emerges, Kate drops to one knee and aims her rifle. Locke, still running, fires his revolver, placing a couple of shots at the eye patch man's feet. Locke, nearing the man, shouts,"Drop the rifle! Drop it right now!" The eye patch man drops the rifle on the ground. Locke advances within arm's length, commanding the man to back up. The eye patch man, hands in the air, backs up and Locke cautiously retrieves his rifle.

Sayid, hunched over in pain and holding his left arm, moves over toward Kate, who is still training her rifle on the eye patch man. The man asks, "You really did crash here?" Sayid gasps, "Over 40 of us, yes!" Locke, gun pointed at the eye patch man, nods toward the house, saying, "I'll go in first, make sure it's OK." Locke enters the house as Kate asks the man, "Who are you?" The eye patch man replies, "My name is Mikhail Bakunin. And I am the last living member of the DHARMA Initiative."

A short time later, Locke enters the main living area of the house from another room, closing the door behind him. Locke begins to inspect the room as Mikhail is treating Sayid's wound while saying, "I grew up in Kiev and joined the Soviet Army. I was stationed in a listening post in Vladivostok. After the cold war, after we lost the cold war, my unit was decommissioned. I was dismissed from my life in the military. And, after years of conducting..." At this point, Locke examines a typewriter with a sheaf of paper still in it. He picks up a similar page sitting next to the typewriter. It appears to be written in Russian, with notations in red ink.

As Locke examines the pages, Mikhail continues speaking, "unpleasant actions against our enemies, I found myself wanting to do something good. So I replied to a newspaper advertisement." Sayid asks, "An advertisement?" Mikhail quickly explains, "Would you like to save the world? it read. That's how I met them...The Initiative. They're very secretive, very rich and very smart." As Sayid and Mikhail continue their conversation, Locke wanders into another room.

Locke looks down at a table containing (at one end) electronics parts, circuit boards, and old computer parts. Continuing around the room, he sees shelves of electronic components and thick wires hanging down from the ceiling. Along one wall is a bank of computer equipment with various lights on. The table sits in front of the bank of computer equipment, facing out into the room. Locke removes his rifle as he moves around the end of the table. A series of tones plays from the computer speakers and a mechanical voice says, "Ready to play?" A blue chessboard with a red box in the middle with yellow writing is displayed on the computer monitor. The writing reads "READY TO PLAY? Y/N".

Locke is drawn to the monitor. As he looks at the displayed chessboard, the computer "music" plays again then the computer's voice asks again, "Ready to play?" Locke glances up at the security camera with a flashing red light. Then he looks back down at the computer screen, indecision on his face. (His face makes an expression like "what the hell? why not?) Locke then reaches over and enter "Y" on the computer keyboard. The screen resets and the computer says, "Your move." Locke smiles, staring down at the screen.

A short time later, Locke enters "x", "h", "3" on the computer keyboard. One of his pieces on the electronic chessboard moves then a window pops up with the message, "Checkmate. You lose."

Locke frowns and sits back, staring at the monitor. Just then Mikhail opens the door, laughs when he sees Locke playing the chess game and remarks, "Heh, don't waste your time. For 10 years I have tried to defeat that game. But it was programmed by 3 grand masters." Mikhail lowers his voice and continues, "And...it cheats."

Locke replies, "Well...I've played a lot of computers and I'm...pretty sure they don't know how to cheat." Locke smiles and as he enters something on the keyboard continues, " That's what makes being human so...distinctly...wonderful." Then Locke glances at Mikhail who smiles and exits the room, closing the door behind him. Locke then enters something on the keyboard.

(Commentary - Locke is not present when Sayid, Mikhail and Kate fight but the noise from the scuffle draws him back into the main living area.)

Locke flings open the door to the main living area. Wide-eyed and alert he enters the main room, with gun drawn. He sees Mikhail laying (unconscious) on the floor, Kate standing over Mikhail with her rifle pointed at him and Sayid, doubled over in pain. Sayid says, "Get some rope."

Locke watches as Kate and Sayid tie Mikhail's hands and feet. Kate asks Sayid, "How do you know he isn't alone?" Sayid explains, "The horse outside is still saddled and the stirrups are set up for someone much shorter than this man." Locke asks Sayid, "You think the others sent someone to keep him company?" Sayid replies, " They sent someone out here because they lost communications." Locke surmises that probably happened when "the sky turned purple" and Sayid agrees. Locke tells Kate and Sayid, "Well, if there's someone else here they're hiding pretty good. I checked every nook and cranny of...this...place..." Sayid flips back a rug on the floor and reveals a trap door! Locke and Kate stare in surprise as Sayid replies, "Not every nook and cranny, John."

Locke is left to guard the unconscious Mikhail as Sayid and Kate investigate the lower level. As Locke is standing there, the computer's "voice" says, "Your move." Locke glances at the open door to the computer room and then looks back down at Mikhail as the computer once again says, "Your move."

Unable to resist the computer's call, Locke leaves the unconscious Mikhail and enters the computer room. As Locke sits, down in front of the monitor the computer says again, "Your move." Locke puts his gun down and after studying the monitor for a minute, hits some keys on the keyboard.
Locke plays the chess game and after several moves, the computer displays "You Win" and and a red banner opens with the word "Checkmate" on it. Then as the computer "winner music" begins to play, the "Checkmate" on the red banner changes to "You Win". Locke starts laughing and seems happy at his "win".

The computer screen flickers, the Dharma Flame Bagua shows, then Marvin Candle appears. Candle is dressed in a white lab coat with the Dharma Flame Bagua imprinted on the front. He's seated at a table in front of a file cabinet and a book shelf, filled with white Dharma manuals. There's a white coffee cup with the Dharma Flame Bagua on it and what appears to be a large closed manual or portfolio, sitting in front of him on the table. Candle left hand and arm appears to be stiff and it appears to be a prosthetic.

Locke sits back in surprise and listens as Marvin Candle instructs:

Manual override achieved.
For pallet drop, enter 2 - 4.
For station up-link, enter 3 - 2.
For mainland communication, enter 3 - 8.

Locke presses 3 and 8 on the keyboard. The computer emits some tones and then Candle Says:

The satellite dish is inoperable.
Communications are down.
For sonar access enter 5 - 6.

Locke then presses 5 and 6 on the keyboard. The computer again emits some tones, the screen flickers and Candle appears again and says:

Sonar is inoperable.
Has there been an incursion on this station by the Hostiles?
If so, enter 7 - 7.

Lock concentrates and slowly begins to press the first seven, when suddenly, a knife appears at his throat. Locke freezes, staring straight ahead at the monitor. Mikhail, standing behind him, says softly, "Keep your voice low and your hands in front of you."

(Kate and Sayid come up from the lower level with their prisoner Ms Klugh in tow. Kate calls out to Locke that they are coming up. They arrive in an living area but do not see Locke or Mikhail. Sayid calls out, "John!")

Locke yells back from outside, "Out here!" Locke stands near the foliage, facing the house with Mikhail pointing a gun to his head. He watches as Sayid kicks open the front door and pushes Ms. Klugh (hands on head) out the front door. Sayid and Kate follow her out of the house.

Kate points her rifle at Ms. Klugh as Mikhail says, "This is simple. Send her over to me and I will release him and we all go our separate ways." Locke interjects, "Don't listen to him...if he was going to kill me, I'd be dead already." Mikhail shoves the gun deeper into the side of Locke's head and growls, "Shut your mouth!" Sayid starts to speak but Locke interrupts him and pointing his finger at Ms. Klugh, tells him, "Sayid, do not let her go!" Mikhail threatens to execute him right there. Locke yells out, "He's not gonna do it!" Sayid tries to speak over him saying, "Be quiet John!" But, Locke continues saying, "I'm the only thing keeping him alive!" The tension builds as Mikhail again threatens Locke! Ms. Klugh says, "Mikhail! Sayid shouts, "Calm down everyone!" Ms. Klugh shouts, "Mikhail!" Mikhail turns toward her.

(Commentary: The following conversation between Ms. Klugh and Mikhail takes place in Russian. The translation is from this thread. Russian Document / Dialogue) (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31652))

Everyone begins to shout.

Klugh: Mikhail! You know what to do.
Mikhail: We still have another way.
Locke: Sayid!
Sayid: I'll handle this, John!
Kate: John!
Klugh: We cannot risk. You know what to do.
Mikhail: We still have another way.
Klugh: We cannot risk. You know the conditions.
Mikhail: We have another way.
Klugh: They know us. We will not let them [unintelligible].
Locke: Don't let her talk to him!
Klugh: You know what to do.
Sayid: Mikhail!
Klugh: It is an order.
Mikhail: But we still have another way!
Sayid: Stop!
Klugh:(in English): Just do it, Mikhail!
(Mikhail pushes Locke out of the way and points the gun at Ms. Klugh while Kate is attempting to move forward)
Mikhail: I'm sorry!

Mikhail pulls the trigger and shoots Ms. Klugh in the heart, killing her.

As Ms. Klugh falls backward, Sayid yells, "John!" Locke reacts quickly and grabs Mikhail's wrist, forcing the gun up in the air as a second shot is fired! Mikhail head butts Locke, knocking him down. At the same time, Sayid advances and and hits Mikhail in the face with the butt of his rifle, knocking him down to the ground as well. Then Sayid points the rifle at Mikhail, the barrel just inches from his face! Mikhail raises his head and yells, "Finish it!" Sayid, adrenaline still rushing through him, stares at Mikhail. Mikhail softly growls, "Kill me!" After a moment's hesitation, Sayid yanks the barrel away, stares darkly at Mikhail and then walks away.

Later, Locke stares intently at the computer screen. Kate calls to him asking if he is ready to go. Locke yells back that he will be there in a minute. Locke continues to stare at the computer monitor where once again, Marvin Candle is talking:

Has there been an incursion on this station by the Hostiles?
If so, enter 7 - 7.

Locke draws a deep breath and then exhales sharply as he continues to stare intently at the monitor.

It's dark out as Kate and Locke join Sayid, Danielle and their prisoner, Mikhail in the fringe of the jungle surrounding The Flame Station. Sayid looks as Locke and notes that he must not have found anything worth taking. Looking down at his flashlight, Locke replies, "Actually, I just played that silly chess game again." Locke, smiling, turns and points to Mikhail and says, "And now, I realize why you didn't want me to beat it." Sayid glances at Mikhail and then back to Locke as he says, "Meaning what?"

The Flame Station suddenly explodes sending flames high up in the air. Everyone hits the ground to protect themselves from the flying debris. They all look back toward the burning building. Aghast, Sayid turns to Locke and asks, "What have you done, John? That place was our one hope of communication with the outside world!" Locke defends himself, saying firmly, "The computer said that if there was an incursion by the Hostiles, I should enter 7-7. So, I entered 7-7."

Locke and Sayid stare at each other for a moment. Then, an angry Sayid, stands up and tells everyone, " We should go. If anyone's around, this explosion is going to attract their attention." Everyone gets up and walks into the jungle.

Day 80 (December 10, 2004)

3.12 Par Avion

Lockes group is preparing to break camp and continue their journey to the "other's" village. He sits next to the campfire, poking it with a stick. Locke glances sourly at Sayid, who consulting the map taken from the Dharma Initiative Operations Manual, tells everyone from the position of the stream on the map that the "others" should be 2 miles away. Looking over at Mikhail, Sayid sarcastically says, "I don't expect you to confirm that." Mikhail ignores him and continues to sit quietly.

Locke glances coldly at Mikhail, spits into the fire, gets up and full of disgust, tells Sayid, "It's an electrical wiring map Sayid. I'm not sure it's as accurate as you think." Sayid derisively retorts, "Well, it's certainly not as infallible as the magic carvings on your stick!" Locke briskly responds, "Hey, the stick did get us to that station." Sayid angrily shouts, "Oh, the station which you accidentally blew up?!" Locke quickly responds, "Well, if you'd have warned me that the basement was rigged with C4, I might have been a little more careful!"

Silent tension fills the air. Kate takes a few steps toward Mikhail and asks, "Why don't you just tell us if we're going the right way?" Mikhail looks up at Kate and replies, "You're going the right way." Locke turns to everyone and with a broad gesture says, "Remind me why we're keeping him alive." Sayid coldly responds, "What do you suggest, we shoot him like a dog?" Locke quickly retorts, "No! I like dogs." Danielle calmly and coldly interjects, "He's right. They would not trade his life for your friends. We should shoot him." Kate, donning her backpack, shouts, "Enough! Nobody's shooting anybody. The map says where they are and he says the map is right." Walking forward to resume the trek, Kate adds, "Just keep moving." Everyone gathers their gear and breaks camp.

After stopping briefly to refill their water bottles from a stream, the group continues on their journey through the jungle with Locke and Danielle leading the way. Kate turns around and offers Mikhail, who is directly in front of Sayid (bringing up the rear), some water. He refuses - thanking her. Then Kate begins to draw more information from their prisoner.

Kate: So how did you get here? How did you get onto this island?
Mikhail I was recruited when I was 24. I was approached by a man...
(Kate stops and turns around. Everyone else stops and Sayid and Danielle gather closer as the conversation continues.)
Kate: I didn't ask you when, I asked you how?
Mikhail They brought me on the submarine.
(Hearing this, Locke turns around and stares at Mikhail.)
Kate: So your people, they can just come and go whenever they want?
Mikhail Go yes...but 2 weeks ago our underwater beacon stopped emitting its locater signal. There was an event... an electromagnetic pulse. It'd be impossible to come back.
Kate: Why would you want to come back?
Mikhail You would not understand.
Kate: Try me
Mikhail I misspoke. What I meant to say is, you are not capable of understanding...
Kate: (growing irritated): And why am I not capable...
(Sayid, listening intently, softly says Kate's name to calm her down.)
Mikhail Because you are not on the list.
Kate: What list?
(Locke draws closer to Mikhail and looks at him intently.)
Mikhail The man who brought me here...who brought all of my people here... he's a magnificent man.
Kate: If Ben's so magnificent, then why did he need one of us to save him?
Mikhail Ben...Ben is not...I will try to make this as simple as I can.
Mikhail You are not on the list ...
Mikhail (Looking directly at Kate) ... because you are flawed...
Mikhail (Looking directly at Locke): ... because you are angry...
Mikhail (Looking back towards Sayid: ... and weak and frightened.
Sayid (Replying coldly): The more I learn about your people, the more I suspect you are not as omniscient as you'd have us believe. Don't speak to us as if you know us.
Mikhail (Looking back towards Sayid): Of course I don't know you Sayid Jarrah. How could I?
Mikhail (Looking directly at Kate): And you Kate Austen are a complete stranger to me.
Mikhail (Looking directly at Locke): But you John Locke...you I might have a fleeting memory of, but I must be confused because the John Locke I know was para...

Mikhail is interrupted by Danielle who calls out, indicating that she has found something and they all follow her. The group emerges from the jungle into a clearing, which is surrounded as far as the eye can see, by evenly spaced tall posts. On the top sides of each post are half spheres (flat side against the post) which face and align with the next post. Lock stares in both directions and then, hands on hips, says, "Well ... looks like we're here."

Kate asks, "What is it?" and starts walking toward the barrier. Sayid grabs her and pulls her back saying, "Don't touch it! Don't even go near it." Then he asks Mikhail, "What are these pylons?" Mikhail smiles and asks Sayid what he thinks they are. Sayid gazes at the pylons and as everyone turns to him, he replies, "A security perimeter." Locke stands next to Mikhail and listens intently as Sayid takes a step forward and pointing at the top of one of the pylons, says, "Those sensors on the side would be triggered if anyone passed between them. It's an alarm system..." Turning back to look gravely at Mikhail, Sayid continues, "... or a trap. Either way we'd be safer going around it." Mikhail nods his head yes, saying, " You are right. It was a security perimeter...but like everything else on this island it hasn't functioned in years." Sayid, smiling, says sarcastically, "Of course it hasn't." Mikhail replies, "If you wish to waste your time, be my guest. The pylons encircle the entire barracks. There is no going around them. If you don't believe me, look at your map."

Sayid, with one hand (not wanting to set his rifle down) removes the map from his pocket and hands it to Kate. Sayid looks at the map as Kate opens it and says, "He appears to be telling the truth". At that Locke quickly removes his backpack and walks behind Mikhail. Using both hands, Locke swiftly grabs the back of Mikhail's shirt and runs forward several steps - propelling Mikhail through the barrier! (A buzzing type sound is heard as Mikhail passes between the pylons.)

Mikhail now stands facing them from the other side of the barrier. He smiles slightly and tells Locke, "Thank-you." Then his body starts to shake and he begins foaming at the mouth. The seizure continues as blood flows from his ears and finally he drops to the ground. After a couple of spasms, his body grows still.

Sayid and Kate stare in shock at the now dead Mikhail. Kate exclaims, "Oh my God!" Locke calmly turns toward them, and says quietly, "Sorry." Then he turns and walks back toward his gear.

Sayid walks closer to the barrier and kneeling looks at Mikhail's body. He then remarks, "Looks like he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage."

Kate and Locke begin to argue. She yells at him for pushing Mikhail through the barrier claiming that they needed him. Locke tells her the "others" would never have traded Jack for him and Mikhail had shot "one of his own people" who didn't want to be in a similar situation. Locke then says that he didn't know Mikhail was going to die and asks how could he know that.

Sayid asks Locke, "Why are you really here? You here for Jack?" Locke counters, "Why else would I be here?" As Sayid walks back toward their backpacks, he replies, "We'll talk about this later."

Locke asks how they are going to get through the barrier. Kate replies that they are not going to go through it - they are going to go over it. Then she turns to Sayid and asks where the ax is. Sayid, shouldering his own pack, tells her that it's in Locke's back pack. Kate starts for Locke's pack, but Locke tries to stop her saying that he's got it. As soon as Locke tries to stop Kate from getting his back, Sayid quickly picks it up. Sayid opens the pack and withdraws a block of C4! The block has metal bands around it as if it had been attached to something and it appears to be wired - ready to be placed and detonated.

Sayid looks at Locke and questions, "I thought you didn't know there was any C4?" Locke sarcastically replies, "Well, I stand corrected." Sayid asks Locke why he took the C4. Locke replies, "You never know when a little C4 might come in handy." Sayid smiles and says, "You'll have to do better than that." Locke stares silently at him as Sayid walks away.

A short time later, Sayid stands back and watches as Locke chops down a tree. Then he and Locke tie two thick tree limbs together in the form of an X. After that, Kate, Locke, Danielle and Sayid carry the tree over to the barrier and lean it against one of the pylons. The tree is tall enough that the upper portion extends several yards over the other side of the barrier. As Sayid and Locke position the support X under the main trunk as a brace, Sayid explains, "The system appears to fire a sonic pulse...when an object breaks the plane between 2 pylons. So, as long as we don't break the plane...we should remain unharmed."

Danielle suggests they use the explosive Locke took. Locke replies, "Be my guest. You wanna go stick it on there?" Sayid, pointing to the pylons instructs, "Whoever climbs over...give those sensors a wide birth." Kate volunteers to go first. She shimmies up the tree, taking care not to touch the pylon as she crosses over to the other side. Once she is several feet beyond the pylon, she swings down and drops safely to the ground below. Locke, donning his backpack, goes next, and shimmies up the tree to the other side. After dropping to the ground, Locke walks over to Kate, who is kneeling next to Mikhail's body. Locke stares down at the dead man.

Later, Sayid returns from scouting ahead and tells Locke and Kate, "We're here." Sayid leads then back to a spot at the edge of the jungle where Danielle waits for them. Just beyond their vantage point is the village where the "others" live. The scene before them looks like "small town America". Much to their surprise and puzzlement, they see frame homes, backyards, someone riding a bicycle and casually clothed people walking leisurely about.

Suddenly they see Jack, running hard, seemingly right towards the hiding spot. Kate starts to call his name and move toward him, but Sayid pulls her back. Looking back toward Jack, they see him look back over his shoulder, turn slightly and catch a football! Locke stares, trying to comprehend the scene before him, as Jack laughs and throws the football back to Tom. Laughing, Tom throws another pass to Jack, who upon catching it, spikes the football as if he has scored a touchdown!

3.13 The Man From Tallahassee

(Flashback - Locke is seated across from a government employee, named Tamara Fry (per name tag). Tamara, who is very impersonal and not too friendly, is filling out some paperwork as she asks Locke some questions.

Tamara Name?
Locke John Locke
Tamara Marital status, Mr. Locke?
Locke Uh, Single.
Tamara Girlfriend?
Locke No.
Tamara Are your parents living?
Locke I...I was raised in foster care. I never really knew my parents.
Tamara Have you ever considered seeking out your biological parents?
Locke Uhhh....I don't see how that's relevant?
TamaraIt's relevant, Mr. Locke, because if the government's going to continue paying your disability insurance I have to figure out whether or not your condition has improved! So, how's your appetite?
Locke Fine.
TamaraI see you've stopped submitting your therapy bills for reimbursement.
(Locke has been slowly growing annoyed throughout the conversation and no longer able to completely contain his non-confrontational attitude, his irritation starts to come through in his demeanor.)
Locke It's because I stopped going. Waste of time.

At this response, Tamara drops her pen and reaches for a stamp on her desk. She stamps the paperwork, "BENEFITS SUSPENDED" in red ink across the top of the front page. Then she tells Locke that the suspension is only temporary and as soon as he resumes his therapy, he can reapply. Locke asks her, "You think I'm temporarily disabled?" Tamara coldly responds, " Depression can be temporary, yes. And since you seem fit to stop going to therapy I guess you are all better!" Irritated, Locke stands up and sarcastically says, "Guess I am...." Then, as Tamara says, "Next!", Locke walks away from her desk.)

Locke remains hidden at the edge of the jungle with Kate, Sayid and Danielle, observing Jack and Tom throwing the football back and forth. Juliet approaches them, shouting Jack's name. Jack turns and throws the football to her. Laughing, she catches it and throws it towards Tom, but continues walking over to Jack. Kate whispers , "She's the one who helped me and Sawyer escape." Locke continues to watch as Juliet grabs Jack's arm and tells him something.

Sayid whispers Danielle's name. Kate (whispering) informs Locke, "John, Rousseau's gone!" But Locke is already moving quietly off in the other direction. Locke watches as Juliet enters a house while Jack waits just outside the door. Locke withdraws the binoculars and looking through them, sees Juliet exit the house pushing a wheelchair with Ben seated in it. Jack leans against a post as he and Ben talk.

(Commentary: It's at this point that Locke lowers the binoculars for a few minutes. As soon as he lowers the binoculars, a woman bearing a close resemblance to Mrs. Talbot walks across the view. As soon as she exits the view, Locke again raises the binoculars and looks through them. See this thread for caps and discussion. Cooper's "other" fiancé? (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32556) )

Locke watches in astonishment as Jack and Ben shake hands as if striking a deal. Lowering the binoculars, Locke says softly, "This is going to be more complicated than we thought."

A short time later, Locke sits quietly loading his gun and listening to Sayid and Kate argue. Sayid reasons with Kate, "So what exactly are you saying? We simply start shooting people and hope for the best?!" Kate retorts, "We came here to rescue Jack and that's what we're going to do!" Sayid argues back, "Obviously the circumstances have changed. He may not want to be rescued!" Kate advances on Sayid and pointing her finger toward the compound, angrily shouts, "That is not him! That is not Jack! They must have done something to him. When they captured us, they drugged us. " Sayid calmly responds, "He didn't appear to be drugged, Kate." Kate snaps back, "They kidnapped him! Held him prisoner! He wouldn't just forget that." Sayid, still trying to reason with her, replies, "I agree. But until we know why...we're putting our lives at risk!" Kate starts to walk off, saying, "I'm not leaving him Sayid!" Sayid grabs her and retorts, "You may not have a choice!"

At this point, Locke interjects, "It's Jack! The first time I saw him he was risking his life pulling people out of burning airplane wreckage. If he's shaking hand's with The Others I'm sure he has a good reason. We just have to go down there and find out what it is." Sayid thinks about Locke's statements. Then taking a step forward, he asks Locke,"What do you suggest?" Locke replies, "We wait until it's dark. We approach Jack when he's alone. And if he wants out, we get him out."

(Flashback - Locke is sitting in his dimly lit apartment, eating (what appears to be) a microwavable TV dinner off of a TV tray while he watches television. Locke's meal is interrupted by a knock at the door.

Locke opens the door and is greeted by a young man, who says, "Hello...John Locke?" Locke looks him up and down and pointing to a sign on this door tells him "no solicitors". The young man explains that he's not trying to sell him anything. Then he introduces himself as Peter Talbot and he needs to talk to Locke about his mother, who he thinks may be in trouble. Locke begins to close the door, telling Peter he has the wrong John Locke, but Peter stops him cold when he asks, "How many kidneys do you have?"

As Locke prepares a couple of cups of instant coffee, Peter Talbot tells him that his mother met a man named Adam Seward (a retired computer entrepreneur from Ontario). After only two months, his mother is head over heals in love with the man and has agreed to marry him, but Peter has reservations about the man so he checked him out. Locke, now seated, comments, "Well, I'm not sure what any of this has to do with me?" Peter replies, "Well, what this has to do with you, Mr. Locke, is that you donated 1 of your kidneys to Adam Seward." Locke becomes keenly alert and begins thinking hard as Peter continues, "Only his name was different back then. He used to be Anthony Cooper." (Peter hands Locke a photograph of Anthony Cooper and Peter Talbot's mother.)

Locke looks at the picture and then sets it over on the TV tray as Peter continues, "All I could find were his medical records. And I saw that he was the recipient of a kidney transplant from...you...so I figured, hey, someone gave the guy his kidney. How bad could he be? Right?" Locke, looks at Peter and then glances at the picture of his father and Peter's mother. Then Locke replies, "Well, it...it was an anonymous donation. I never met him." Peter doesn't appear to believe Locke, so he asks him if he's sure. Locke, handing the picture back, replies, "Yeah. I'm sorry. I can't help you.")

Later that night, Locke, Sayid, and Kate watch as Juliet walks Jack to the door of a house. No one else seems to be around as Juliet takes her leave and Jack enters the house. Locke tells Sayid to guard the front as he goes around and covers the back, while Kate goes into the house from the side. Kate asks Locke, "I'm going in alone?" Locke replies, whispering, "It's better if you're the first one he sees." Then they move out.

Day 81 (December 11, 2004)

A short time later, Locke has entered Ben's house and stands quietly in a corner of Ben's dark bedroom. Ben awakens and looks around the dark room. He calls out Alex's name but only silence greets him. As Ben leans over and turns on his bedside lamp, Locke, with gun pointed at Ben, approaches the bed. Ben is surprised to see him and blurts out "John!" Locke shushes him and whispering, tells him to keep his voice down. Locke glances around the room as Ben tells Locke he doesn't need to threaten him, he'll tell him where to find Jack.

Locke smiles and says, "I'm not looking for Jack.". Then, lowering his voice to a deadly whisper, continues, " I'm looking for the submarine." Ben plays dumb and asks what submarine he's talking about. Smiling slightly, Locke replies, "The one you use to travel to and from the island. The one your man Mikhail told me about...right before I killed him."

Just then, from outside Ben's door, Alex asks, "Who are you talking to?" Anxiously, Ben shouts, "Alex, don't come in here!" Locke swiftly crosses to the door and flings it open. He sees stunned Alex, who takes a step backwards. Locke quickly looks down the hallway as someone is knocking on the front door. Then he grabs Alex and drags her into the room. Alex is putting up a fight and making a lot of noise. Locke covers her mouth with one hand and quietly tells Ben, "Tell her to be quiet!" Ben does and she calms down. At that point, Tom (outside the front door) loudly asks, "Ben? You awake?"

Locke drags Alex across the room and pushes her into a closet. Then Locke takes up a position in the front of the closet, leaving the door slightly ajar. He gives Ben a long threatening look as Tom says, "I'm coming in!" Tom and another man enter the room. Ben asks, "What is it?" Tom replies, "Tom It's Austen and Jarrah. They're here. Somehow they found us." Then he informs Ben that after capturing Kate and Sayid, they took them to his (Tom's) place and are holding them prisoner there. Ben tells Tom to separate them and find out how they found them (othersville). Then Tom asks, "What about Juliet and Shephard? Tomorrow in the morning... " Ben cuts him off saying, "Let me worry about that. Just go." Then Tom says, "Got it!" Ben tells the other man, "Richard? Wait a minute." Tom tells them he'll wait outside then he exits the room.

Richard approaches Ben's bed but he remains in the shadows. Ben issues an order to Richard, "I want you to bring me the man from Tallahassee." Richard questions Ben asking him what he needs him for. Ben replies, "Just do it. Now!" Richard agrees and leaves the room.

Once Ben is alone again, Locke grabs Alex and the two of them exit their hiding place in the closet. As Locke crosses the room and checks the door, he asks, "The man from Tallahassee? What is that...some kind of code?" Ben mockingly replies, "No, John, unfortunately we don't have a code for "There's a man in my closet with a gun to my daughter's head". Although...we obviously should." Ignoring Ben's remarks, Locke tells him that Sayid had a pack with him and pointing to Alex says, "I want her to retrieve it." Ben somewhat perplexed says, "OK ...But you should know that my daughter currently hates me. So I'm not sure holding me hostage is your best option." Alex cuts Ben off, saying, "Dad!" Then she turns to Locke and tells him she'll get the bag. Locke nods and allows Alex to leave the room.

(Flashback - Locke walks into a florist shop where Anthony Cooper (aka Adam Seward) and Peter Talbot's mother are picking out flowers presumably for their wedding. Locke, unnoticed walks a short distance that's places him directly opposite Cooper. Seething with anger and hatred, Locke stares at Cooper as he discusses flower arrangements with his fiancé. Cooper glances up and sees Locke across the store. He tells his intended that he'll look for larger arrangements around the store and then walks over to Locke.

Cooper, smiling, greets Locke, who smiles back at him. Then Locke derisively asks, "Gonna be a big to-do, or just the 2 of you and a preacher? I guess you couldn't invite me, huh? That would make for...awkward introductions." Anthony, leery of Locke's presence and demeanor softly asks, "How did you even know that I was going to..." Locke cuts him off and whispering loudly, says, "I know...because her son came to me and asked why I gave you a kidney. He's on to you. But he doesn't have any proof, so he came to me, hoping I would vouch for you." Then Cooper asks Locke what he told Peter.

Locke ignores the question and asks Cooper if he is conning Peter's mother with the hope of marrying her for her money. Cooper doesn't comment on that but asks Locke, "What is it you want, John?" Locke's face is filled with cold hatred as he tells Cooper that he wants him to call off the wedding. Cooper then wants to know why Locke is doing this. Locke becomes extremely agitated and moves around a flower display to come face to face with his father. Enraged, Locke replies, " Because! Because it's not fair! You make people think that you're their family. And then you leave their life in ruins. And I'm not going to let you do it again! You're going to call off your engagement and go...or I'm going to tell her the truth." Cooper starts to walk off, but Locke grabs him and says, " I want to hear you say it! You say you're going to leave!" Cooper replies, "OK John... you got it." Then he looks Locke up and down, turns and walks away. Locke stares after, trying to compose himself after the encounter and seems to exhale in relief.)

A short time later, Locke is sitting in a chair, deep in thought while keeping an eye on Ben. Grasping the overhead bar, Ben repositions himself in the bed and asks for Locke's help getting into his wheelchair. Ben asserts that he just wants some dignity and reminds Locke that he should understand that. Locke rises from the chair and gets the wheelchair.

As Locke wheels the chair into position, Ben asks him how he expects to pilot the submarine, pointing out that it's a complicated piece of machinery. Locke replies, "I'll figure something out. For all you know I was a Commander in the Navy." Ben stares at Locke after that remark. Locke smiles and then directs Ben, "Put your arm around my neck. I'll lift under your knees." Ben, not moving, asks, "What's in the pack, John? If you met Mikhail that means you were in the communications station. Which means you found the explosives. So you're not planning to pilot the submarine anywhere, are you? You're planning to destroy it. I know you, John Locke." Locke replies, "You don't know me at all."

Locke listens intently as Ben tells him, "I know you were born in California. I know you were raised in foster care. I know you wasted a big part of your life in Tustin, pushing papers at a company that manufactured industrial boxes. I know you spent the 4 years prior to your arrival on this island in a wheelchair. And I know how you ended up in it." They both remain silent as Ben's last words hang in the air. Then Ben says, "Tell me, John... did it hurt?" Lock replies, "I felt my back break. What do you think?"

(Flashback - Locke parks his red Volkswagen in the parking lot of his apartment complex. He grabs a bag of groceries as he exits the car. As he walks across the lot, he is hailed by a man and woman, standing near a parked car. The woman identifies herself as Detective Mason and while introducing her partner Detective Reed, shows Locke her identification. She asks Locke if he knows a man named Peter Talbot. Locke thinks for a minute and then tells them he doesn't think he knows him. Detective Reed gives a description of Peter Talbot and Detective Mason says, "If it will be helpful we believe he was here in your apartment 2 days ago."

This seems to jog Locke's memory as he responds, "Oh, oh, oh, yeah! Yeah, he was a solicitor. I...I...uh...I...I sent him away." Detective Mason replies, "Mr. Talbot's family is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 million dollars. So I'm curious, what exactly was he selling you door-to-door?" Locke's eyes widen a little at the mention of 200 million dollars, but he holds his composure and tells the detectives, "Well, I...look I told you I don't know him so..." Detective Mason interrupts him, asking, " Then why was your name and address on a piece of paper in his pocket, Mr. Locke?" Puzzled, Locke glances at Detective Reed and then, returning his attention to Detective Mason asks, "Why were...would you be looking through his pockets?" Detective Mason replies, "Because Peter Talbot's dead.")

Locke moves a curtain aside and looks carefully out of Ben's window. As he watches, Ben tells him it was difficult being in the hatch with him - knowing that he shouldn't be walking around and not being able to ask him about it without revealing who he was. Locke says quietly, "So ask me now....now that I know who you really are." Ben appears both surprised and excited at Locke's invitation. He wheels his chair over to Locke and asks, "Was it immediate? It started the moment you got here?" Locke smiles and nods his head as he says, "Yeah." Ben waves his arms in the air and asks, "And you were just walking? The feeling returned right after the crash? That day?" Locke crosses the room and begins examining the books on Ben's dresser as he says, "That's what immediate means Ben." Then Locke's eyes widen in comprehension as he remarks, "Your wondering why it hasn't happened for you. You're not recovering as fast as you'd like. How long's it been since Jack fixed ya? A week? Now that I think about it, how'd you get sick in the first place?"

After a moment of silence, Ben tries to regain his advantage in this verbal duel and asks, "Are you afraid it will go away, John? Is that why you want to destroy the submarine? Because you know if you ever leave this island you'll be back in the chair?" As Ben is talking, Locke examines a pair of eyeglasses and as Ben finishes speaking, Locke asks innocently, "You got anything to eat?"

Locke pushes Ben, seated in the wheelchair, into the living room. As Ben flips a switch and lights come on, Locke asks, "Where do you get electricity." Ben replies, "We have 2 giant hamsters running on a massive wheel at our secret underground cave... " Not amused, Locke retorts, "Yeah, that's funny." Then Ben tells him there are leftovers in the refrigerator and invites him to help himself.

Locke opens the refrigerator and takes out and aluminum foil covered plate. As he sets it on the counter, Ben wheels over to stare at pictures of Alex when she was younger. Without looking, he tells Locke, "I ate most of the dark meat ... sorry." As Locke eats, Ben (somewhat agitated) turns around and tells Locke if he blows up the sub then he'll have a big problem with his people. Locke asks, "Is that supposed to be an incentive not to blow it up?" Ben continues, saying, " I was born on this island. Not many of my people can say that. Most of them were recruited and brought here and as much as they love this place...as much as they would do anything to defend it...they need to know they can leave if they want to. The sub maintains that illusion."

Locke, looking down at Ben (who has moved closer) remarks, "So you're lying to them." Ben becomes frustrated and raising his voice, retorts, "No. There here because they want to be here. Some of them are just not ready to make a full...commitment yet. But you John...you've already made that commitment. And now you have a choice...because if you stop and think, I can show you things. Things I know you want to see very badly. Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that somewhere on this island there's a very large box...and whatever you imagined...whatever you wanted to be in it...when you opened that box, there it would be. What would you say about that, John?" Locke, after listening intently to Ben's words, replies sarcastically, "I'd say I hope that box is big enough to imagine yourself up a new submarine."

While Locke finishes drinking a glass of water, Ben asks him why he is so angry. Locke quickly responds, "Because you're cheating! You and your people...communicate with the outside world whenever you want to. You...you come and go as you please...you use electricity and running water and guns...you're a hypocrite!...a Pharisee! You don't deserve to be on this island! If you had any idea what this place really was...you wouldn't be putting chicken in your refrigerator!" Ben, angrily retorts, "You've been here 80 days, John. I've been hear my entire life. So how is it you think you know this island better than I do?" Locke replies softly, "Because you're in the wheelchair ... and I'm not." Locke smiles as he looks down at Ben.

A short time later, Locke watches out the window and sees Alex returning. Ben sits deep in thought until he hears Alex open the door. Ben asks her if she had any problems. As Locke takes Sayid's backpack from her, she looks at Ben and shakes her head "no". Locke checks the pack then says, "OK. Here's how this is gonna work. She's gonna take me to the sub. Once were there, I let her go." Ben protests and says that he'll take Locke to the submarine. But Locke refuses saying, "I don't want you to slow me down." Then Locke tells Alex, "Let's go."

Ben stops them when he urgently says, "John, before you go you should know..." Locke turns and looks at him as he quickly continues, "Jack and I made a deal. In less than an hour he's leaving the island on that submarine and it's a 1 way ticket. The anomaly wiped out our communications. We have no way of contacting the outside world. Which means when that sub leaves, it can never come back. So whether you destroy the submarine or whether you let it go, the end result is the same. No one will find this island." Locke stares at him for a minute, then grabs Alex's arm and says, "Let's go." Then they exit the house with Locke pushing Alex ahead of him.

As Alex leads him toward the sub, she asks Locke, "You know he's manipulating you, right?" Locke asks, "How's that?" Alex continues, "That's what my father does. He manipulates people. He makes you think it's your idea, but it's his." Locke looks all around as Alex is speaking and then replies, "I'll have to keep that in mind." They continue walking through heavy foliage until they reach a small clearing. Alex stops and motions ahead, saying, "The submarines down there. At the end of the dock." Locke starts to walk onward, but turns and tells Alex that he's sorry for involving her in this. Then he moves off toward the dock.

Locke walks along the dimly lit dock and arrives at the submarine. He opens the sub's hatch and looks down the shaft at the softly glowing red light below. He quickly descends the ladder and while donning the pack, takes a quick look around to make sure he's alone. He draws his gun and walks into the next section, stopping to turn on the lighting. Then he proceeds through the sub's interior.

Later, Locke (dripping wet) strides commandingly along the dock away from the submarine. He encounters, Jack, Juliet, Tom, Ryan and a few others heading toward the submarine. Ryan, training a gun on Locke, shouts, "Hey! Hold it right there! Get your hands up! Get down! I said get down!" As several armed "others" approach him, Locke raises his hands and drops down on his knees. Jack walks up and asks, "What are you doing here, John?" Locke looks up at him and says, "I'm sorry, Jack." Growing impatient, Jack asks, "Sorry for what?" Suddenly the submarine explodes! Everybody ducks down, shielding themselves from the fiery debris. Locke turns back around and stares at Jack.

(Flashback - Anthony Cooper, hearing a loud banging at his door, opens it and finds a very agitated John Locke. As he pushes the door wide-opened, Locke asks, "What did you do?" Cooper seems perplexed at Locke's question and mutters his name as Locke rushes by him into the room. Turning around, Locke points a finger at him and says, "Tell me. Tell me you didn't do it." Cooper closes the door and asks, "What are you talking about?" Locke strides into the room looking wildly around. He turns and yells, "Tell me that you didn't kill that kid?" Cooper replies, "What? You think I had something to do with Peter's death?" Locke throws his arms out to the side and yells, "I tell you to end things with his mother and the next thing you know he's dead!"

Cooper tries to calm Locke down. He tells Locke there's no reason for him to kill Peter as he's been doing this for a long time and he's not "sweating some rich kid". Locke then demands to know why he's still sticking around. Cooper then admits to Locke that he didn't end it with Peter's mother yet. He was looking for a different angle or way to make some money before skipping town. Cooper pours a couple of glasses of MacCutcheon whiskey as he explains, "But then all this happened. Peter died and everything just went straight into the tank. She's devastated. She's called off the wedding. There's no profit in it, John. I'm a con man, not a murderer." Then he offers Locke one of the glasses of whiskey.

Locke thinks this over and then asks, "She called off the wedding?" Cooper replies, "She said she couldn't deal with it. She needs to be alone." Locke pointing his finger at Cooper, in a raised voice asks, "So, If I were to call her, right now, that's what she would tell me?" Cooper points out the telephone and takes a drink of whiskey. Locke walks over and grabs the phone. As he turns around and begins to ask for her number, Cooper rushes at him and pushes him backward towards the window!

Locke hits the glass and it shatters! He's propelled out the window and falls eight stories to the ground!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/clayseason/gifs/lockefalls.gif

Some time later, a very despondent and terribly bruised Locke lays silently in a hospital bed. The detectives that questioned him earlier in his apartment parking lot are with him in the room. Detective Mason tells him, "Mr. Locke we know this isn't what you want to here, but your father's gone. We know he fled to Mexico shortly after your...encounter, then he disappeared. I'm sorry, but he could be anywhere in the world right now." The door opens and a young male hospital therapist enters the room, saying, "Alright detectives, that's enough. Mr. Locke has work to do today." The therapist opens the blinds and the detectives assure Locke they'll let him know if anything develops. Then they leave the room. During this time Locke has not reacted to anything.

The therapist approaches Locke's bed, saying, "John, John, John. We have got ourselves quite a day ahead of us my friend. It's a fine time to get you up out of that bed." He starts to pull the covers down, but Locke grips them and softly says, "No. I don't want to." The therapist replies, "John...I don't remember asking." Then he pulls the covers down and leaves the room for a minute. When he returns, he's carrying a wheelchair. As he sets the chair up, the therapist says, "Most people struggle with this at first, but don't worry...you'll get used to it."

Locke looks over at the wheelchair. Then, panic starting to set in, Locke protests, "Uh...no...no...please...I...I can't do this." The therapist cuts him off saying, "John! You fell 8 stories and survived, OK? I don't want to hear about what you can't do. Now let's go. It's gonna be alright." Locke continues to protest as the therapist lifts him up and carries him over to the chair. Anxiously, Locke watches the wheelchair grown closer as he nears the chair. The therapist sets Locke down in the chair and places his feet on the foot rests. Then he exits the room, telling Locke he'll be right back.

Locke stares down at his now useless legs. He begins to cry as despair sets in.)

Day 82 (December 12, 2004)

Some time later, Locke is handcuffed to an overhead pipe in a dark room. The door opens, revealing Richard Alpert and Ben. Ben, sitting calmly in his wheelchair remarks, "Well, John, you've really gone and done it now." Locke replies, "Locke You don't have to pretend to be disappointed anymore. We both know you wanted it to happen. That's why you left the C4 in Sayid's bag because you wanted me to make it happen."

Ben tells Richard to take the handcuffs off of Locke. While he's doing that, Ben wheels closer to Locke and says, "Do you remember earlier, John, when you called me a cheater...when you said I didn't deserve to live on this island? Well get this, there I was shaking hands with Jack and thinking I'd give almost anything to come up with a way to stop him from leaving...because to let him go would be a sign of weakness, of failure, of defeat. People would see that. They would know it. And that, John, would be the end of me. But to kill him...that would be cheating...because my people also heard me make a promise and to break my word...that would be the end of me too. And then you came striding out of the jungle, John, to make my dream come true."

During this time, Locke has lowered himself into a sitting position and is rubbing "the life back into his arms". When Ben finishes talking, Locke asks, "You're not gonna start talking about the magic box again are you?" Ben replies, "No, John. I'm going to show you what came out of it."

Richard grabs Locke and pulls him to his feet. Then Locke accompanies Ben (Richard pushing him) along a corridor. Ben tells Locke that when he asked him earlier "if it hurt", he wasn't referring to his (Locke's) back breaking. In fact, he wasn't referring to the physical pain at all. Locke, still stiff from being cuffed to the pipe, asks sarcastically, "What you wanna know if it hurt my feelings?" Ben looks up at Locke and says quietly, "No John. I wanted to know what it felt like when your own father tried to kill you. He's the reason you destroyed the submarine, isn't he? You're afraid. You're afraid of him and this is the one place he can never find you. This is the one place he can never get to." Locke, staring down at Ben, says impatiently, "What do you want from me?"

Ben, very calmly explains, "I don't know how it happened, but you seem to have some communion with this island, John ... and that makes you very very important. You have no idea what you're talking about of course, but in time you'll have a better understanding of things. So what do I want? I want to help you, John." Locke, smiling dubiously, asks, "Why?" Ben replies, "Because I'm in a wheelchair and you're not."

After a brief silence, Ben quietly asks, "Are you ready to see?" Locke watches warily as Richard removes some keys and opens a door. A hissing sound is heard as the heavy door creaks open. Locke steps around the open door and peers inside. Stunned, Locke sees his father, Anthony Cooper, who looks terrified. He's sitting in a chair with his hands tied behind his back and his mouth gagged. In utter amazement, Locke says, "Dad?"

Locke walks into the recreation room where Kate is being held prisoner. Her back is facing the door and she doesn't turn around as she asks, "What?" Locke takes a step forward and says her name. Kate turns and sees Locke standing there. Although is right hand is bandaged, he appears to be all right. Guards can be seen standing just outside the double doors to the recreation room.

Kate gets up in surprise and asks if he was captured. As Locke approaches Kate, he replies, "Yes .... but only temporarily. I came to say goodbye." Kate doesn't understand and Locke explains that he is leaving with them. Kate becomes angry and asks Locke if they brainwashed and "where did Jack go". Locke, shaking his head, replies, "Jack didn't go anywhere, Kate. He's going to have to stay behind like you."

Kate tells Locke that he can't trust them and they will lie to him. Locke raises his voice in reply, "I don't want to go home, Kate." Surprised, Kate stares at Locke as he softly continues, "I want you to know that I made a strong case for you. I told them that you were a good person ... reliable ... smart ...honest. Then they told me who you were and want what you had done ... Let's just say that forgiveness is not one of their strong suits." Locke looks at Kate thoughtfully for a moment, then turning, says, "Good luck!"

Locke walks toward the doors and yells, "Coming out!", as Kate follows him asking why he's going. Then she grabs his arm and turns him around asking if he's seen Jack, Sayid or Rousseau. Locke, looking downward, silently shakes his head and then opens the door to leave. Kate asks, "John ... please ... what's happened to you?" Locke turns as he is exiting and says, "I'm sorry, Kate." Then he leaves.

3.19 The Brig

Locke is sitting in front of a fire in a dark room reading something inside a red file folder. He hears a muffled voice saying something unintelligible. Turning his head slightly, Lock loudly says, "Save your breath.." Then he quietly adds, "...nobody's going to hear you." Locke finishes reading the folder and then places it into the fire.

(Flashback - On Island - 8 Days Ago (This would be Day 82.) - Stunned, Locke sees his father, Anthony Cooper, who looks terrified. He's sitting in a chair with his hands tied behind his back and his mouth gagged. In utter amazement, Locke says, "Dad?"
Locke asks Ben, "What is this?" Ben replies, "You tell me. You brought him here." Perplexed, Locke denies bringing Cooper to the island. As Locke moves closer to his dad, Ben cautions him about being too close. Locke grows angry and asks where they found him and why did they bring him to the island. Ben replies, "I've already said ... we didn't." Angry, Locke shouts, "You want me to ask him how he got here?" Ben calmly says, "Be my guest."

Locke removes the gag from Cooper's mouth and in a flash, Cooper bites down hard on Locke's hand. Tom shocks Cooper with a taser which causes him to release Locke's hand, which has a deep, ugly bite-mark on it. Ben reminds Locke that he warned him and then he wheels out of the room. As Locke exits the room, his father asks, "Don't you know, John? Don't you know where we are?" Tom, remaining in the room, closes the door.

As Ben rolls back down the corridor, Locke asks, "What did he mean?" Ben tells him that they don't have time for that now as they are leaving "first thing in the morning". Locke asks where they are going and in response Ben tells them they are going to a new place or rather an old place. Then Ben asks Locke if he wants to go with them. After thinking it over, Locke says, "Yes." Ben then tells Locke that they are holding Kate a few buildings away in case he would like to say goodbye.)

Day 91 (December 21, 2004)

The light from Locke's flashlight slices through the darkness and reveals a startled Sawyer, aiming a gun at Locke. John Locke lowers the flashlight, revealing himself to Sawyer. Locke greets him saying, "Hello James. Want to zip your pants up?" While Sawyer zips up, Locke explains that he is there looking for him. Sawyer remarks, "Okay, Tarzan. So now that you're back from your Blow-Up-Everything-That-Can-Get-Us-Off-The-Island tour, how 'bout you tell me why you joined up with the damn enemy?" Locke explains that he didn't "join-up" with the enemy, rather he infiltrated them. When Sawyer asks why he should believe him, Locke explains that he kidnapped Ben and has him tied up in the jungle. Perplexed, Sawyer asks, "And you came all the way back here to tell me this because...?"

Locke moves closer to Sawyer and explains, "Because this is the same man who tortured you ... beat you ... humiliated you ... and I want you ... to kill him." Sawyer responds tersely, "You want him dead ... you kill him!" Locke shakes his head and replies, "I'm not a murderer." Sawyer quickly retorts, "Neither am I!" Locke matter-of-factly replies, "Except for the man you killed in Sydney." Then Locke explains that the "others" have files on everybody. Sawyer remarks, "Yeah, well their files got their facts wrong!" Locke stares at him in silence, and after considering Sawyer's denial, replies, "Then I made a mistake coming to you. Please don't tell anyone that I was here." Then Locke turns and walks back towards the jungle.

Sawyer points the gun at Locke's back and yells at him to stop, but Locke keeps on walking. Sawyer yells again for Locke to stop, but Locke ignores his warning. As Locke walks away from him, he hears Sawyer call out, "Damn it! Wait up!" Locke doesn't stop, but a smile spreads across his face as Sawyer starts following him.

(Flashback - On Island - 3 Days Ago [This would be Day 88.] - The "Others" are busy setting up camp in a valley. Locke is assisting Cindy by staking her tent. As he finishes, Locke looks around at the "Others", who keep staring at him. Cindy notices and smiling, tells him, "Don't mind them. They're all just excited you're here. We've been waiting for you." Before Locke can question her, Tom walks up and tells Locke that Ben wants to see him in his tent.

As Locke approaches and enters Ben's tent, the recorded voice of Julie is heard: "Ben, it's 6 A.M. on Saturday morning. Kwon is pregnant. The fetus is healthy and was conceived on island with her husband. He was sterile before they got here." Ben quickly shuts off the recorder when he notices Locke has entered his quarters. After Ben greets him, Locke points to the recorder and asks, "What's that?" Ben tells Locke that Juliet is gathering information so they can go in and take any pregnant women. Locke raises his eyebrows and asks, "Take them?" Ben replies, "This is not the first time we've done this, John. Trust me, no one will get hurt."

Then Ben asks Locke to get his cane. Much to Locke's surprise, after handing him the cane, Ben stands up and walking over to a dresser tells Locke that he has him to thank for this. Locke is again surprised and questions, "Me?" Ben puts the recorder in the top drawer and turning, replies, "A week ago, I couldn't move my toes, but the minute you showed up, I started to feel pins and needles. And this is only the beginning, John. I can't wait to show you what this island can do. But unfortunately you're not ready, John." Locke disagrees and tells Ben he is ready. Ben assures Locke that he is not ready and won't be ready until he is free from the hold his father has over him. Then Ben asks, "Why do you think you brought him here?" Locke sarcastically replies, "Oh ... oh ... oh ... the magic box! Okay Ben, how about you show me the magic ..." Ben interrupts him, saying, "The magic box is a metaphor, John. I can't show you anything until you can show me that you're ready and willing to be one of us. When people join us here on this island, they need to make a gesture of free will...of commitment. That's why you're gonna have to kill your father." Startled, Locke stares at Ben and then turns around to look at his father, who is gagged and bound to a massive pillar jutting up from some ancient ruins.)

Locke leads the way through the jungle as Sawyer, barefooted, painfully follows behind. Sawyer is definitely not in a good mood as he asks Locke what else is in the file that the "others" have on him. Locke tells him the file contains information that his parents died when he was very young. Then Locke turns to Sawyer and says with sympathy, " But it doesn't say why...your father shot your mother ... or why he turned the gun on himself. That must have been hard for you." Then as Locke starts walking away, a stunned Sawyer asks, "What else?" While he's walking forward Locke tells Sawyer that the file contains his high school transcripts and criminal record. As Locke asks why he uses the "Sawyer" alias, Sawyer bashes him on the back of the head, knocking him down to the ground.

Sawyer quickly pounces on Locke, grabs Locke's knife and holding it to John's throat, demands, "How stupid do you think I am, huh?! I've already been conned by Ben once! Maybe you heard about it, bunny with a number painted on it! You think I'm gonna just follow you though the jungle?" Locke tries to calm Sawyer down and tells him he has to trust him. But an angry Sawyer doesn't calm down and demands that Locke tell him the truth. Locke insists, "I'm bringing you there to do exactly what I said ... to kill Ben." Sawyer begins shouting and demands to know why Locke came back and got him -- why didn't Locke just kill Ben himself? Locke finally shouts back, "Because I can't! I can't! I can't do it!" Calming down, Locke says softly, "That's why I came back for you."

Sawyer gets up and still angry commands Locke to get up. Then he tells Locke that he'll go with him, but he's not going to kill anybody -- they'll take Ben back to camp. As Locke, breathing hard, gets ups, he quietly tells Sawyer, "Yeah, I understand ... but you'll change your mind ... when you hear what he has to say ... you'll change your mind." Then Locke turns and starts back on the trail.

Further along the trail, they come to a stream. Locke kneels down and scoops up some water as Sawyer walks into the water to sooth his aching feet. Sawyer asks Locke to tell him what Ben is going to say that's going to make him (Sawyer) want to kill him. Locke puts him off, replying, "It's not really my place to tell you." Sawyer sighs and sitting down tells Locke, "Look ... what you read in that file ... about the guy in Sydney ... I thought he was someone else. I made a mistake. I didn't mean to kill him." Locke asks, "Well ... who'd you mean to kill?" They stare at each other for a long time. Then Sawyer looks away, sighs and asks if they're almost there. Locke nods his head and getting up, replies, "Almost."

(Flashback - On Island - 3 Days Ago - (This would be the night of Day 88.) - Ben approaches Locke, who is sleeping. Ben taps him with his cane and says, "Wake up, John. It's time." Locke follows Ben to the pillar where the still bound and gagged Cooper awaits his fate. Handing Locke a large knife, Ben says, "I know it won't be easy, but the quicker the better." Ben yanks the gag off of Cooper who says, "You're kidding me, right? You expect him to kill me?" Locke looks down at the knife in his hand as Ben explains what he's feeling is that part of him that feels there's a good explanation for his father stealing his kidney and throwing him out of an eight story building. Then Ben whispers loudly, "Don't you want to be free from him?"

Cooper taunts Locke by saying, "The hesitation he's feeling is because he is a spineless..." Locke cuts him off, yelling, "Shut up!" Locke looks around and sees the "others" gathering around to watch. Locke softly says, "I gotta think ..." Ben interrupts saying, "Don't think, John!" Cooper continues to taunt Locke. After calling Ben, "bug-eye", Cooper explains that they've been through this and all John "wants is his daddy". Locke loses control and yells into Cooper's face, "Shut up! I said -- shut up!" Cooper smiles and says, "You really haven't figured it out yet, have you?" As Locke stares hatefully at Cooper, Ben says enticingly, "Let go of him, John."

Locke breaks the tension and asks Ben, "Why are you doing this to me?" Ben replies, "You're doing this to yourself. As long as he's still breathing, you'll still be that same sad, pathetic little man that was kicked off his walkabout tour because you couldn't walk." Locke stares into Cooper's eyes and raises the knife. The blade presses into Cooper's throat, causing blood to flow, as Locke tries to kill his father. Then tension holds and then suddenly Locke withdraws and backs down. Cooper says, "I'll be here the rest of the week, John ... if you change your mind." Ben swings his cane and slams it against Cooper's head, knocking him out cold. Ben takes the knife from Locke's hand and turning to the crowd, says, "I'm sorry. He's not who we thought he was." Locke stares at Ben and then turns and walks back through the crowd of staring eyes.)

Locke and Sawyer finally arrive at their destination in a clearing. Sawyer gazes in shock at the Black Rock. Locke tells him, "Ben's inside in the brig." They enter the Black Rock and slowly move through the old ship. As Locke's flashlight shines on a skeleton shackled to the wall, Sawyer asks, "Friends of yours?" Locke replies, "It's an old slaving ship, mid 19th century. My guess is they captured the slaves and brought them here to try and mine the island." As the progress through the ship, Sawyer taps on a box and asks what's inside. Locke replies, "That'd be dynamite." At this point, they hear the muffled sounds from the next room. Sawyer exclaims, "Son of a bitch .... you really kidnapped the little bastard."

Locke removes the bar from the door and begins to open it. Sawyer stops him, saying, "We ain't killing him, Locke." Locke replies, "Whatever you say, James." Sawyer backs off and allows Locke to open the door. They both peer in and see a man with a hood over his head, struggling against the chains that bind him to a wooden support. Sawyer saunters into the room, saying, "Well ... well ... well ..." Locke shuts the door behind him and places the locking bar back into place.

Locke's sits just outside the brig's door and whittles away at a piece of wood. He's seems impervious to Sawyer pounding on the door and his muffled shouts, " Locke! Open this damn door! Open it up! I can hear you .. you bald bastard!" Locke quickly shines his flashlight in the direction of another door creaking open. His light picks out Danielle as she enters the room. The greet each other and then Locke smiles and ignoring the pounding on the door asks, "What brings you to the Black Rock?" Danielle also ignores the noises coming from the other room as she answers, "Dynamite ... and you?" Sawyer's voice can be heard shouting, "Open this door! Open up!" Locke ignores Danielle's question and shines his flashlight across the room as he says, "Crates are over there."

More pounding noises are heard as Sawyer again yells, "Open this damn door!" As Danielle turns toward the dynamite, Locke cautions her saying, "Careful ... it's unstable." Danielle takes a crate and turns to leave as Sawyer yells, "Locke! Locke!" John Locke begins to whittle again.

(Flashback - On Island - 2 Days Ago (This would be day 89.) - Locke sits high on a hill overlooking the "others" campsite. He unwraps his bandaged hand, which is now completely healed with no sign of a scar. As Locke gazes down at his father (still tied to the pillar), Richard walks up behind him and says, "It's beautiful isn't it? No matter how much time you spend on this island, you just never get tired of this view. We haven't been formally introduced, I'm Richard ... Richard Alpert." They shake hands and then Richard sits down beside Locke.

Richard explains to Locke that Ben knew he wouldn't kill his father and wanted the whole camp to witness Locke's embarrassing failure. Locke asks, "Why?" Richard replies, "Cause when word got back here that there was a man with a broken spine on the plane who could suddenly walk again ... well, people here began to get very excited because that...that could only happen to someone who was extremely special. Ben doesn't want anyone to think you're special, John".

Locke asks Richard, "Why are you telling me this?" Richard confides that Ben has been wasting their time with side issues like fertility problems when there are more important reasons. Locke is still perplexed and asks Richard, "What do you want from me?" Richard replies, "I want for you to find your purpose ...and to do that ... your father has to go." Richard reaches into his case and as he withdraws a red folder, tells Locke since he's not going to kill his father, that he has an alternative suggestion. Richard hands Locke the folder and gets up to leave. Locke glances at the information and asks, "Sawyer?! Why would Sawyer kill my father? He doesn't even know him!" Richard calls back over his shoulder as he walks away, "Keep reading.")

Locke sits calmly listening to Sawyer yell and pound on the door. After a moment of brief silence, Sawyer yells, " I'm pointing my gun a you, John Boy! You've got 3 seconds to open this door!" Locke replies, "You're not gonna shoot anyone, James." Sawyer starts counting, "One ... Two ..." Locke raises his voice and says, "If there were any bullets in that gun, why would you hold a knife to my throat?" Sawyer slams into the door and yells, "Son of a bitch!"

(Flashback - On Island - Yesterday - (This would be Day 90.) - Locke wakes up to the noise of the "others" breaking camp. Perplexed at the activity, he approaches Ben and asks him, "What's going on?" Ben replies, "We're moving." Locke asks, "Moving ... where are we going?" Ben stops packing his books and tells John that they are moving but he is staying behind along with his father (still tied to the pillar) to clean up his mess. Locke protests, saying, "Well, you can't leave me. After everything you can't just... " Ben interrupts him, "Don't tell me what I can't do, John." Locke continues to protest but Ben tells him they are leaving and will leave a trail for him to follow, adding, "... and John, unless you're carrying your fathers body on your back ... don't bother.")

Locke continues to whittle outside the brig. He glances up as Sawyer's shouting and banging on the door stops and the noise from within diminishes. Deep in thought, Locke returns to whittling on the piece of wood.

A short time later, Locke opens the door and slowly walks into the brig. He looks down at his dead father -- strangled by a vengeful Sawyer. After a few minutes, Locke nods and solemnly looks at the emotionally-charged Sawyer and says simply, "Thank-you."

Locke follows Sawyer as he runs out of the Black Rock. As Locke nears Sawyer, kneeling and retching, he says, "You can go back now." Sawyer whispers back, "Why did you do this?" Locke replies, "He ruined my life ... and he ruined yours ... and he had it coming." Locke waits for that to sink in, then he tells Sawyer that Juliet is a mole. She's supposed to find out which of the women survivors are pregnant. Continuing, Locke says, "Three days from now there's gonna be a raid on the beach and they're gonna take them. They say they don't want anyone to get hurt."

Sawyer gets up and asks, "Why you telling me?" Locke explains that he's not going back and Sawyer needs to warn the camp. Sawyer asks, "You're going back undercover?" Locke shakes his head and says, "No, I was never undercover, James. I'm on my own journey now." Sawyer replies, "Even if Juliet is a mole they ain't gonna believe me. I've been saying that since she showed up." Locke hands Sawyer the tape recorder with Juliet's message to Ben on it and tells him, "They'll believe you now."

As Locke turns to leave, Sawyer asks if it's true that his father through him out of a window and as a result he was a cripple. Locke thinks for a minute and then smiles and says, "Not anymore."

As Sawyer starts back to camp, Locke returns to the Black Rock. A short time later, Locke walks over to a tree and puts his backpack on. Then he hoists the blanket-wrapped dead body of Anthony Cooper onto his back. With a determined look on his face, he starts his journey back to the others' new camp.

3.20 The Man Behind the Curtain

All eyes are upon Locke as he walks through the Others' camp, carrying his dead father. Face to face with Ben, Locke reminds him that he would tell him everything about the island if he (Locke) killed his father. Locke dumps Cooper's body at Ben's feet and asks, "So, why don't you start at the beginning."

Locke and Ben have a private conversation in Ben's tent. Ben tells Locke that telling him everything is not as simple as opening up a book. Then Ben admits that he is not the leader of his community, saying, " We all answer to someone, John." Somewhat irritated, Locke asks, "And whom might that be?" Ben hesitates for a moment and then replies softly, "His name is Jacob."

Smiling, Locke tells Ben to take him to Jacob, but Ben refuses. A little exasperated, Locke throws up his hands, smiles and getting up to leave tells Ben he'll get someone else, maybe Richard, to take him. Ben raises his voice and says, "Why would Richard take you? He doesn't know where Jacob is, he doesn't talk to Jacob... " Locke, growing angry, cuts Ben off, asking, "Well, who talks to him?" Ben replies, "I do." Still angry Locke asks, "...and no one else knows where he is?" Ben firmly tells Locke that unlike most of the people he brought there, he (Ben) was born on the island and therefore Jacob trusts him and tells him what to do. Locke derisively comments that it's very convenient that no one else knows where Jacob is or talks to him. Then drawing close to Ben, Locke tells him, "You know what I think, Ben? I think there is no Jacob. I think your people are idiots if they believe you take orders from someone else. You ... are the man behind the curtain ... the Wizard of Oz ... and you're a liar. "

Ben stiffens at Locke's words and asks, "And what might you base that theory on, John?" Locke replies, "Because if you were telling the truth, your hand wouldn't be shaking." Then Locke smiles as Ben grips his shaking hand with his other hand to steady it.

Locke slowly follows Ben out of the tent when they hear someone shouting Ben's name. Locke stops just outside the entrance as he sees Mikhail, who he thought was dead. Mikhail becomes upset and wants to know what Locke is doing there as he is the one that tried to kill him. Ben reassures him that it's alright and Locke is with them now. Then Ben asks Mikhail where he's been. Mikhail replies, " I encountered several of his people in the jungle. They had an injured woman with them. Apparently she had just parachuted onto the island. Her helo crashed into water. She says her ship is approximately 130 clicks to the West of us. She has a radio telephone." Ben asks where the parachutist is now. In reply Mikhail deduces that she is back at the survivor's camp.

Ben quickly thinks about that news and says, "We'll be visiting their camp day after tomorrow, we'll take care of it then." Agitated, Mikhail insists that they take car of it now, but Locke interrupts, saying loud enough for the whole camp to hear, "Ben's not going anywhere with you. He and I are going to see Jacob." Everyone is stunned and looks expectantly at Ben, who (after looking around at the entire camp) calmly replies, "I'm sorry I have to deal with this now, John. Our excursion will have to wait." Mikhail is taken aback by Ben's demeanor towards Locke and derisively asks, "Since when do you explain yourself to him? An outsider... "

Locke suddenly rushes forward, grabs Mikhail's shirt with both hands, and then head-butts him -- knocking him down to the ground! As Mikhail starts to get up, Locke kicks him under the chin -- knocking him back down. As Locke continues to kick and beat on Mikhail, Ben turns to Tom and Richard calling upon them to help Mikhail. Neither man, as well as everyone else in the camp, make any move to help. Instead they look away from Ben and continue watching Locke beat up Mikhail. Locke delivers three forceful blows to Mikhail's now bloody face -- knocking him out cold. Turning, Locke advances on Ben and calmly asks, "So ... when do we leave?"

A short time later, as Locke and Ben fill their canteens from a small stream, Ben remarks, "You know you didn't have to beat Mikhail senseless to make your point, John." Without looking up, Locke replies, "Yes I did."

They're interrupting by Alex who calls out Locke's name. After giving a defiant look to Ben, Alex says to Locke, "I hear you're going to see Jacob. You're going to need this." Alex offers Locke a gun. After a brief hesitation, Locke accepts it and thanks her. Alex glances at Ben, turns and starts to leave. Turning around, she looks at Ben and says, "Happy birthday, Dad." Locke checks the gun as Alex leaves walks away."

Locke leans against Ben's shelter, leisurely slicing and eating a piece of fruit. As Ben packs up his gear, he tells Locke, "Something you should know, John, before we go. Whether or not you think he's the Wizard of Oz, I can assure you that Jacob is very, very real. And we're gonna go see him, and he's not gonna like it. In fact I have a feeling he's going to be very angry. And that's why my hand was shaking, because this is not a man you go and see. This is a man who summons you." Undaunted, Locke glibly replies, "Well I guess there's a first time for everything." Locke motions for Ben to lead the way and then, ignoring all the "others" staring at them, the two men walk through the camp toward the jungle -- toward Jacob.

Night has fallen and Locke and Ben continue on the trail with the help of flashlights lighting the way. They come upon a line of gray powder (perhaps volcanic ash?). Ben pauses and looks up the small hill. Then he steps over the line of powder and continues up the gradual slope. Locke lingers behind and scooping up some of the power, examines it. As he rubs it between his fingers, Ben commands him, "Let's go, John." Locke ignores Ben and sniffs the power. Ben, raising his voice, calls out his name more firmly. Then Locke drops the power and continues following Ben.

As they approach an old, dilapidated cabin, Ben announces, "We're here." Ben tells Locke to turn off his flashlight. When Locke questions that, Ben explains, "Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do." Both men take off their gear and leave it behind as they approach the house. Ben lights a lantern, hanging just outside the door. Then he turns to Locke and quietly says, "Once I open this door, there's no turning back. You sure this is what you want?" Locke smiles at Ben and without saying a word -- steps up onto the porch beside him. Ben says, "So be it." Turning toward the door, Ben says loudly, "Jacob? I'm here with John Locke. We're coming in now."

The door creeks as Ben opens it and walks through to the darkness within. Locke closes the door behind him as Ben sets the lantern on an old, dusty, wooden table. Locke looks around and sees an empty chair next to the table, a pot-belly stove, a shelf with several mason jars filled with something dark and ominous, and a painting of a dog, dimly lit by the moonlight. Ben circles around the table to the empty chair and then starts speaking to it as if someone is sitting there. Ben says, "Jacob ..." Then looking over at Locke, introduces him, saying, "This is John." Ben then asks Locke, "Aren't you going to say hello, John?" Locke takes a step closer and puzzled, asks, "What?" Ben turns back to the empty chair and says, "I told you he wouldn't." Locke interrupts him, saying, "Who ... what are you talking about?" Ben looks at Locke and says, "You can't see him?" Locke replies, "See who?" Ben (in a barely audible voice) whispers, "Jacob." He continues in a normal voice, "He's sitting right here ... in this chair." Ben then addresses the empty chair, "Yes, I know, but he insisted."

Locke walks closer to the table and asks, "What is this?" Ben replies, "You wanted the secrets of the island? Well, here they are. This is the man who can answer every single ..." Ben turns back to the chair (as if someone in it said something to him) and says, "I am not. He made me bring him here! Do you think that that was my ..." Ben abruptly stops talking as he looks at the empty chair. Now angry, Ben addresses the chair, saying, "Sorry! May I finish?" Locke interrupts, saying, "You're crazy." Ben quickly turns toward Locke and says, "Excuse me?" Locke replies, "You don't know anything about the island do you? You just ... made it all up."

Ben once again addresses the empty chair, "Jacob! Please I can't hear him if you're gonna talk over what he's saying ..." Locke cuts him off shouting, "Stop! Stop! Shut up!" Angry, Locke asks, "You putting on a show for me?" Then lowering his voice, continues, "Or do you ... do you really think there's someone there?" Ben replies, "I know there's someone there." Locke looks at Ben and the empty chair, then he says, "You don't know anything." Then Locke turns and starts looking around at the interior of the cabin. Ben tells Locke, "I'm sorry you feel that way, John. And I'm sorry that you're too limited to see." Locke replies, "You're pathetic."

Locke turns and walks toward the door to leave. As he is opening the door, he hears a deep masculine voice say slowly, "Help me." Locke pauses and then turns back around, closing the door behind him. Locke addresses Ben and asks, "What did you just say?" Ben, who appears genuinely surprised, replies, "I ... I didn't say anything." Locke retorts, "Oh yes you did. I heard you." Then Locke turns his flashlight on and shines it at Ben. Ben appears suddenly afraid and as Locke starts to speak, the door slams and the whole house starts shaking! Everything in the room starts moving as Locke shines the light around looking for the source of the noise. The lantern falls from the table and shatters on the floor --a fire spreading out fueled by the escaping kerosene. Locke ducks down as the glass window above his head shatters. Ben grabs the empty chair and yells, "That's enough! You've had your fun!" Ben is flung back forcefully against the wall! Locke sees a fleeting image of a man seated in the chair -- making eye-contact with Locke. Quickly spinning around, Locke heads for the door and bolts out of the cabin and into the safety of the jungle.

Locke stops a short distance away from the cabin's entrance. Breathing deeply, he watches the front door as the noise within stops and silence hangs heavy in the air. The door creaks open and Ben calmly emerges. He hangs an unbroken lantern back on its spot beside the door. As if in a daze, he stiffly walks toward Locke. As Ben comes to a stop in front of him, Locke asks, "What was that?" After a moment of silence, Ben replies, "That was Jacob."

Day 92 (December 22, 2004)

The following day, as they are walking back through the jungle, Ben asks Locke, "What did Jacob say to you?" Locke smiles and replies, "He didn't say anything to me. You did." Ben appears confused and asks Locke, "What are you talking about?" Irritated, Locke responds, "There is no Jacob, Ben! I'm not going to be taken in by the little ... show you put on last night. Turning to Ben, Locke shouts angrily, "You're a fraud! ... and it's time your people were told the truth!" Locke starts to walk forward, then stops and yells, "And this is not the way we came!" Ben replies, "I'm taking us back another way. I wanted to show you something first." Locke shakes his head in disgust and says, "I've seen enough!"

As Locke starts to move forward, Ben stops him by admitting that some of things he told him are not true. He then confesses that he wasn't born on the island. Locke asks, "Then where did you come from?" Ben walks up to Locke and replies, "That's what I want to show you." Ben then takes the lead again as they continue through the jungle.

Ben leads Locke to an open mass grave. Locke peers down at the skeletons, clothed in the remnants of DHARMA jumpsuits. As Locke gazes down into the grave, Ben (standing behind Locke) tells him that they are his people -- all that's left of the DHARMA Initiative. He explains, "They came here seeking harmony, but they couldn't even coexist with the island's original inhabitants. And when it became clear that one side had to go, one side had to be purged, I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch. Which makes me considerably smarter than you, John... " Ben's last words sink in and Locke, now alarmed, pulls his knife as he whirls around to face Ben! But Locke is too late! Ben pulls out a gun as Locke is turning and shoots him at point blank range! The impact from the gunshot propels Locke backward and he falls into the mass grave.

Locke groans from the pain of the gunshot and the fall. Ben walks over to the edge and looking down at him, asks, "What did Jacob say to you?" Locke groans and asks, "Why did you do this?" Ben stares down and Locke and tersely replies, "Because you heard him. Now I need to know what he said." Locke says in return, "Help me!" Growing angry, Ben raises the gun and points it at Locke, saying, "John ... I'm not going to ask you again! What did he say to you?" Locke raises his hand toward Ben as if to stop him from shooting, and gasps, "He said ... help me." Ben lowers his gun, laughs shortly, and says, "Well, I certainly hope he helps you, John." Then Ben turns and walks away, leaving John Locke to die amid the decaying remains of the DHARMA Initiative.

Locke opens his eyes and tries to move. Painfully raising his head, he looks down at his now useless legs. He grabs his left leg and moves it closer to the other, but when he lets go the leg falls back into the same position. Glancing around, Locke sees a revolver by one of the decaying bodies. Groaning and gasping, he manages to move his upper body close enough to snag the gun. Sweat running down his face, Locke checks the revolver to see if it is loaded -- and it is. Locke looks at the gun in his hand then closes his eyes and slowly raises it to his head.

Just as he's about to pull the trigger, he hears a voice say, "Don't John." Locke opens his eyes and looks up at the edge of the mass grave and sees ... Walt! ... and older Walt ... a teenage Walt ... but still Walt!

Walt quickly says, "Put the gun down. Locke lowers the gun and whispers "Walt." Then Walt tells Locke to get up. Locke replies, "He shot me and I can't ... move my legs." Walt replies, "You can move your legs. Now get out of the ditch, John." Locke yells, "Why?" Walt replies, "Because ... you have work to do." Locke continues laying there as he begins to smile.

3.23 Through the Looking Glass part two

The main body of survivors have arrived at the radio tower. Danielle has removed her message and now there is nothing to prevent Naomi from reaching her ship. She tries the satellite phone. Naomi excitedly shouts, "I've got it! I've got a signal!" Ben yells, "Jack please! You don't know what you're doing!" Jack takes a couple of steps toward Ben and replies, "I know exactly what I'm doing." Everyone waits hopefully as Naomi makes her connection. Suddenly, the sound of a knife slicing through the air is heard. Naomi stares at nothing as she convulses and spits up blood. Then she falls face forward onto the ground and everyone sees the knife sticking in her back! Crouching a short distance away is John Locke!

Jack yells, "John!" as he rushes to Naomi's side. As Jack examines Naomi, Locke points a gun at him and tells him to step back. Jack gets up and asks Locke, "What did you do?" Locke replies, "What I had to. Now step back." Jack looks over at the phone, which has started ringing, Locke quickly tells him to stay away from the phone, but Jack defiantly reaches for it. Locke shoots at the phone but misses. Jack picks up the phone and turns, facing Locke and the gun Locke is pointing at him. Jack asks, "What are you doing, John?" Locke tells Jack that he doesn't want to shoot him. Ben interrupts, yelling, "Do it, John! Shoot him! Do what you need ..." Danielle quickly elbows Ben in the face, knocking him out.

Locke addresses Jack again, saying, "Please. Put the phone down." The phone continues to ring as Jack shakes his head and tells Locke, "No. You're done keeping me on this island." Locke cocks the gun and warns Jack, saying, "I will kill you if I have to." Jack walks toward Locke as he says, "Then do it, John." The tension becomes unbearable as everyone watches the two men locked in the standoff. At long last, Locke lowers his gun, sighing, "Jack! You're not supposed to do this." Perplexed, Jack looks at Locke and starts to say something but is interrupted by a voice on the phone, saying, "Minkowski ... Hello?" Jack raises the phone to his ear and asks, "Who is this?" The voice asks, "Who is this?" Jack replies, "My name is Jack Shephard. Are you ... are you on the boat? ... the freighter?" The voice on the other end, asks, "How'd you get this channel?" Jack replies, "Naomi ... Naomi told us about your search team ... about the boat." While Jack is talking, John Locke turns and walks quietly back into the jungle and away from rescue.
