View Full Version : Crack-pot Comic Book theory

Why its Mr U
10-04-04, 05:38 AM
I came up with a crazy theory that I thought I'd throw out for the fun of discussing it.

A lot of people have been commenting how Walt saw the polar bear in the comic book and then it manifested in reality (the manifested fears theory). But what if it was the other way around! What if the comic book is about the island!!!! (Hey I said it was a crack-pot theory.)

So far Walt is the only child we've seen, he doesn't speak Spanish so the comic isn't his (I mean something he carried with him). Certainly it could have belonged to an adult on the plane but....

Also, its paper and therefore would likely have burned amid the wreckage so where did it come from? Supposedly there is a person who was actually already on the island; maybe they set it down and thats how Walt found it.

What do we know? The comic book is in Spanish. Sixteen years ago someone started an automated distress call speaking French but the "iteration voice" is in English. Some have suggested the island was a French testing site but wouldn't they have a French radio then? Wouldn't it be saying "le iteration" (or whatever the correct French wording is) and stating the numbers in French? Anyway that had me thinking an international group had been there. Whatever was going on, the Spanish decided to "document" it graphically in the comic book. We all remember those fire safety "comic books" we got in elementary school... well maybe this was a mock up of one about the "project" that was being conducted on the island.

I don't for one minute think this theory is right but...

So does anybody else have any crack-pot theories of their own?

We all have crack pot theories of our own and we all seem to have the guts to write them down. Yours isn't crazier than anything I've come up with. Keep reading - you're going to see an amazing array of ideas.

The comic must have something to do with the island's mystery but I haven't decided exactly what yet. But I doubt they had the time (given their obvious life threatening situation) to mess with comics. I'm more inclined to believe there's another child on the island - probably from the time frame the comic was written. In another thread someone posted it. The polar bear in it? I can't explain the coincidence of that. Maybe someone else can, although I don't subscribe to the "fear manifestation" theories. I don't want Walt to turn into another Anthony.

I'm currently going through all my issues of Green Lantern. The art work looks VERY 90's. But it IS an issue of the green lantern, I believe.

Do you all promise to love me if I find it?

I saw something on the comic on another threat. Someone posted a picture and someone actually translated the Spanish. But I can't remember where I saw it. It was on this board though because it's the only place I go (Thank God!). But we definitely need a date, so keep looking. And yes, we'll love you.

The comic book's English title is Green Lantern & FLASH- Faster Friends: Part 1. It was published in English in 1997. I don't have the issue, but I'll look for it. I am CERTAIN that this is the book, though. (The GL in it was Jay.)

The cover (compare to the episode if you want, its the right one): lantern_light.tripod.com/fast1.htm (http://lantern_light.tripod.com/fast1.htm)

Anyways, now for my own analysis. I originally thought that perhaps this was left on the island from previous stranded peoples. But 1997... well... most likely not.

JacksGirlfriend
10-04-04, 06:58 PM
Not necessarily - if it belongs to a kid from 1997 chances are he/she's been taking very good care of it. He might have dropped it and run when the plane was crashing. (I'll think of an explanation for anything.) I would like another child there.

As an avid comic collector, it could be a Justice League book. Both Flash and GL are in that group. If it's from 97 then I'd have to look, I have the full run of JLA and it might be in there.

Anyway, first time poster here. LOVE THE SHOW. Talked my ex into watching on Sat and now there's another fan out there. She likes it because it's a diversion from the deluge of cop/lawyer/medical shows out there.

Is it Wednesday yet? :)

Not quite Wednesday yet... but if you stay in here long enough you'll have to have someone remind you because the days just slip through your fingers...

When you know more about the comic, let us know. Heroes, villains, dates, places, etc. We're obviously obsessed with every little detail around here. And find out the significance of the polar bear while you're at it (please).

You have just crossed over into the twilight zone... your life will never be the same.

Well I posted the comic info on a DC Comics message board so I'll see if anyone there recognizes it. I can't post pics there for some reason so that makes it a tad difficult.

What comic it is probably is of no importance but at this point, speculation RULES!

martianprobe- its not necessary. I researched it and being a comic collector myself, I found that it is in face Green Lantern & Flash- Fast Friends Part 1, as I said above.

The comic itself is entirely between Wally West (Flash) and Kyle Rayner (Green Lantern) and calls back to the Golden Age in DC comics where Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the original Flash- Jay Garrick- were fighting side by side. The essential plot line is... Get this- a Government/Extraterrestrials conspiracy causing a bizzare series of events that read like something out of the X-Files. Aparently the villain- Alien X- was easily defeated toward the end of the issue- but when he is defeated and dying, rather than get medical help that Kyle offers, he commits suicide- only AFTER unleashing a swarm of otherworldy creatures upon earth. I don't know at this time what those creatures were.

...More to come as I find more information.

Good call Latuki.. I was just going to post that it indeed was GL/Flash: Faster Friends... either #1 or #2.

Don't have that one myself but the premise does sound interesting. We may have solved one Lost mystery!

OK, now is it Wednesday yet? :b

Wow sorry Latuki... you did answer that. Man you'd think I never read a message board before.. reading the first post and then skipping all the way down and adding a comment!

So um, yeah... good job on the comic research there! I'll just wander off and mind my own business now. ;)

LMAO! hhmm, makes me really want to go out and try to find them comics (I'm a comic geek to 8o , just not an avid collector :\ ) Now I'm interested in The creatures Alien X released On Earth too....could be the same thing plaguing the island?
Most likely not, but maybe so.....
I liked my thought that it was just a kid finding a comic!
But my guesses are 99.9 % always wrong (I GET ONE EVERY NOW AND THEN ^_^ )
Of course There would have to be some kind of significance!
Although....The French Signal Was 16 Years Old....So The Comic Couldn't Have Come Through With *Them* Perhaps Someone Else Was Stranded After That.....But Before Our Boys And Gals?
It Means There Would Have To Be Some Kind Of Portals Depositing These People....Because Lets Face It, Comics Are Very Fragile, They Do *NOT* Fight Well Against Water (uumm...the ocean and rain) OR Fire ( which a crash would produce)
And even if it was Brought By Someone Else It Would Have To Be VERY Well Protected Against Those Tropical Elements, It Would Not Have Survived Just Laying Around.

AshenFang
10-05-04, 01:13 AM
As far as the comic surviving the crash, I don't find it to be such a big thing. Plenty of luggage and such made it without any damage, it could have easily been stowed a number of places. (Luggage, over head, the little magazines the stick in backs of the survivors seats.)

While yes, there was plenty of fire to go around..and most likely everyone should have died in such a crash. (Not much a show there. =p ) ..many made it out..more or less untouched.. if the book was in their section, I could see it making it out ok.

OneFoolOfATook
10-05-04, 01:25 AM
yeah, but it would have been trampled, or torn apart from all the josteling and more then likely been stepped on....it would not look to be in such good condition....even though it is light and could have been blown by a gust of wind away from the wreckage it still would have been messed up.
Of course....with so much other detail being givin' attention I guess it would be possible for the producers to overlook the thought of wrecking the comic up a bit.

Not if it was i someone's bag, we are shown plenty of 'cargo' that made it out just fine, from the sewing kit (cheap plastic still in perfect condition.) to the small bottle in Jack's pocket. It the book was placed flat in any peice of luggage, and as long as it didn't come open during the crash, which it seemed many didn't, it would have been a very safe ride. Though not saying it's going to be in mint condition or anything. =p But easily what we saw.

Latuki Max
10-05-04, 02:00 AM
martianprobe, sorry I was just wanting to make sure I got credit for this incredible discovery. :P

Anyhow- I would look at this as simply flavor. JJ loves to put little clues in his shows. For example- the letters in season one, or the fact that St. Aidan (phrase seen in dreams of Season Three) ended up, when reversed, being a certain suprising new character's name- Nadia Santos.

Anyways, I would look at it as perhaps just a little insight into that some creature has been released by something. That's all.

martianprobe
10-05-04, 03:12 AM
The book itself probably will end up having no signifigance but the fact that the kid saw the bear and later it appears is the kicker. There has to be something to that.

That'd be my luck.. I'd find a comic instead of a Playboy!

Why its Mr U,

I also think the comic book has something to do with the secret of the island. Last month, after part one of the pilot, I posted my theory about how I thought the comic book would play a part in the secret of the island. It's in the spoiler section(not sure why it hasn't been moved to the theory/speculation section). The title of the thread is "Hotel Casino Theory" because my comic book theory is based on a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode which another poster(can't remember who) later noted was titled "The Royale".

I know the comic book hasn't been referenced in the last few episodes, but I'm sticking with it as I haven't seen anything that totally disproves it. On the other hand, it doesn't really explain some of the other strange occurances that have happened so far either(not yet, at least). And I keep hearing people say the writers/producers say the explanations will be based in reality/pseudo-science etc. Yeah, whatever.

Anyways, here's the link to my post that has my comic book theory if anyone wants to read it/slice it up. Remember, I wrote it sometime just after the first episode of the pilot so some of the minor mysteries I talk about have already been resolved in subsequent episodes. For instance, we now know the white Lab belongs to the kid etc. Also, my theory isn't as eloquent or as elaborate as the other more talked about theories such as the Philadelphia Exp., the Triangle or Hotel Cali. theories etc. But it is just as long winded :x just a warning.

Here's the link:

schweinhaxe: That was an interesting theory and one I haven't seen (because i don't go into spoilers). The comic book must have more significance than we've even seen so far. Perhaps there are other "books" on the island as well creating other types of things.

Although I've never seen this episode, the idea does sound familiar. Maybe there was an old Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode with similar ideas. I'll have to give it some more thought. Anyway, I'll be watching the show looking for clues.

Here's a much smaller but properly contrasted picture of Part 2:

www.comicspriceguide.com/...0555/1.jpg (http://www.comicspriceguide.com/images/covers/10555/1.jpg)

Look at the black things flying in the background. We may have found our turbine-busting culprit.

seraphism

had a look at the turbine-busting incident on the pilot (got a downloaded copy) and it really does look like something blew it up. It's not just a piece of debris falling because if you freeze frame it you'll notice that the "debris" has started it's upward motion (fast enough to blur and elongate the shape) BEFORE the engine actually explodes, but if it was "debris" than it should have started acsending AFTER the explosion. Admittedly the timing is pretty close but i'm fairly certain the black shapes trajectory was not affected by the blast. Defintely food for though this is.

drabauer
10-24-04, 06:15 PM
Could the black shape attacking the turbine be the "creature," which ordinarily moves too fast for the human eye to detect?

Shmern

As mentioned on the SUV thread, the 'black thing' appears after the explosion as well

I have some Spidey tights I keep in the closet for special occasion. You should know about me and my fetish for spandex!

The hard part was getting Terry O'Quinn (the fella in the way back) to dance for our shoot.

The cool thing is (and you can't tell by looking) is that we are dancing to Britney Spear's song "Toxic" as sung and interpreted by Pinnerman. MaxPublic is playing the organ, and AztecGal is pounding the bongos. It was a great experience.

Well, you look great in the tights (and I already knew about your fetish for spandex). Terry O'Quinn was available on such short notice? You must have an amazing negotiating skill.

Gosh. I didn't know Max had told people about his love of organ music. He's usually so private about stuff like that. How does Pinnerman sing? Does he put his heart into it the way Britney does? And azteclady - I heard she's pretty good.

I can't believe you didn't invite me along. I would have loved to be part of the experience.

I'm looking at that vid clip of the engine...that black flat object doesn't look to me like it flies into the engine and then back out the other side (which would, given the heat and fan, be physically impossible for something that big)--it looks like it flies over the top of the engine as the engine blows up. So some computer animation thing by the show's editors.

And about the polar bear. I like the interesting theory of manifestations...but if the kid saw the polar bear in the comic book, why wasn't it him that saw it in the woods--in other words, it could have been his manifestation, but it didn't affect him in any way at all! Strange...
