Does anyone attach significance to the fact that Ben told Jack that if he cooperated, "I'll take you home." Not, "I'll send you home."

I'm not a stitch-counter - - that is, I don't necessarily think that the brand of shoes the characters wear has special significance. But Ben repeated the line, which I think gives it significance. The implication seems to be that he personally is going to escort Jack home.

Thoughts?

hmnnn.... this is very true, i also noticed this. Maybe he is getting tired of the island, and also wants to leave himself. Or perhaps he wants to personally make sure that jack gets all the way home, to his hospital or something safe and sound.

Or maybe he's saying something along that lines that after he's done with Jack, Jack will belong on the island too. Like, whatever he wants Jack for, what he's doing is 'taking' him, showing him, that he belongs there.

It did occur to me that "home" may not mean back to St. Sebastian's Hospital. Ben said Jack would go home the same as Michael and Walt, and unless I see them sitting snug in their own house in the U.S., I have serious doubts that M&W are "home" as Jack would understand it. Of course, we all know that Ben is not above out-and-out lying, but even if we assume he is telling his version of the truth, I would make sure I was very clear on specifics.

I also thought that Jack and the other 815s may be necessary for the Others' ability to get off the Island. Otherwise, why would Ben care if Jack "cooperates when the time comes"? Unless he is necessary for something that Ben wants for himself. He implies they are on the Island by choice, although he doesn't really say it. And he says they have contact with the outside world, but there is no indication that the communication goes both ways.

My guess is, we will find out that what Ben said to Jack in that conversation is true, but that there is much more to it so that it doesn't mean what it seems to on the surface.

I'm exhausted and about to log out, but I can't resist at least chipping in a quick comment...

Because this is something I've been pondering.

Briefly, I think that Ben NEEDS to get off the island to perform some specific task/mission, and whether or not he will be able to depends solely on Jack's cooperation. As much as I hate things being all about the Jackass all the time...

It seems as though he is the sole person actually targeted. They grabbed Kate and Sawyer to make Kate choose Sawyer. Because Jack has closer ties with Kate than any lostie, and if that tie is severed with her, he'll be more likely to willingly cooperate.

Or Ben just could be lying. We must ALWAYS keep that in mind.

Or he could "take" Jack home the same way Jack was trying to "take" his father back home: in a box.

I kinda thought it was the way Ben has grown up on the island. The way he communicates.

Example: S2 Episode 23 & 24 - Live Together, Die Alone:
MICHAEL: Yeah, I can drive a boat.

GALE: Good, then you're going to take this boat and follow a compass bearing of 325, and if you do that exactly, you and your son will find rescue.

Not be rescued, but "find" rescue....

The same communication or mannerisms as what you have mentioned above with the conversation between Ben and Jack. IMO.

But then again here in the conversation between Jack and Ben....

S3 Episode 2 - The Glass Ballerina:
JACK: You're lying. You're stuck here just like we are. You don't have any...

BEN: Your flight crashed on September 22nd, 2004. Today is November 29th. That means you've been on our island for 69 days. Yes, we do have contact with the outside world, Jack. That's how we know that during those 69 days your fellow Americans re-elected George W. Bush; Christopher Reeve has passed away; the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. [Jack starts laughing] What?

JACK: If you wanted me to believe this, you probably should have picked somebody else besides the Red Sox.

BEN: No, they were down 3 games to none against the Yankees in the league championship, and then they won 8 straight.

JACK [laughing]: Sure. Sure, of course they did.

BEN: That's home, Jack. Right there, on the other side of that glass. And if you listen to me -- if you trust me -- if you do what I tell you when the time comes -- I'll take you there. [B]I will take you home.

"Your fellow Americans..."

Now since Ben has stated that he has been on the island all his life, what nationality does this make him? Or the Others?

Wouldn't he be Bensylvanian?

We can assume that he's not American, even though he speaks english with no hint of any accent (British, French, German, etc).

We're not sure where he was born, just that he spent the vast majority of his life on the island.
