View Full Version : The Irony...

OH the irony... i just got a pop-up thats supposed to END pop-ups... anyways.. thats not the point.
During the 2nd half of the pilot episode, when they hear the French transmission... its great. Everyone is relying on stupid shannon to translate the message... the irony? where? The actress Evangeline Lilly (i think thats her name...) heh heh heh... she speaks fluent french... so during filming... it must have been interesting... for her...
You guyz know any OTHER ironic things about lost? About the Actors/actresses and their parts, or the characters and whats going on etc....?

Don't really have any irony to share, but I definitely agree with you about the Shannon thing. Gah...trust the blond bimbo that can't seem to pull her own weight...:\

Don't forget that the only reason Shannon went on that trip was to prove to her brother that she wasn't useless and that he didn't know her as well as he thought he did.
Then, on the trip, she got exactly what she wished for - she was put into a situation where her expertise was just what the group needed, proving her usefullness.
Could this be related to Locke getting just what he needed (his legs back), or Charlie (getting his guitar), or Jack (getting a chance for closure with his daddy-issues, and "fresh water" - as both a metaphor and as, well, water), and Kate (getting freedom).
If you're getting a pop up coming to this board, something is wrong. You best check your computer for spyware because being this is a Gold community no pop ups should be.

yep, definitely think there something to be found for everyone on this island, given that they've also all lost something. it's becoming a consistent theme.
Baron X
10-29-04, 02:38 PM
Yes a very obvious theme. OF COURSE THEY ALL LOST SOMETHING THEY WERE IN A PLANE CRASH!!!!. They lost freedom, connection to civilization, their jobs, their families, their apartments, their cars, all their stuff. If we are going to use such obvious connections, why stop there, let's see none of them seem to be allergic to sunlight, or have a irrational fear of peeing out doors.
Charlie 'lost' his guitar, Jin 'lost' his watch now they both have them back......so what?
jjabramizeme
10-29-04, 06:00 PM
maybe i should clarify...so please don't shout...they all lost something significant before the crash. The crash and aftermath is just pulling it all together.

I thought Kate saying "I don't want to be Eve" was slightly ironic because Eve is a nickname for Evangeline.

Very funny! (I AM SERIOUS) thanx for actually ANSWERING my request:
Any ironic things about lost....
But... it is interesting you guyz have good points....
Jack: lost his father
Locke: Lost his abilaty to walk
Jin & Sun: Lost the "LOVE" in their marriage
Kate: Lost her freedom
Now... heres the rest w/ my opionions on what they lost
Michael: Lost is "single life" freedom
Walt: Lost his mother
Claire: Possibly lost her boyfriend, Thomas
Hurley: No idea....
Charlie: Lost his "famousness" aka... his band broke up
Shannon and Boone: No idea.... why were they in Australia ? Vacation?
Sawyer: No idea... but I think that it has something to do w/ the letter that he looked sad while reading in ep. pilot, prt. 2
Sayid: NO IDEA!

Claire: Possibly lost her boyfriend, Thomas
That's a spoiler. And something I didn't want to know.

Claire did not say he was dead, it is not a spoiler. She just said there wasn't a father, which I took to mean he was not actively concerned with the pregnancy. Besides he is not a character on the show what would have been spoiled.
Everybody you know has lost something, I think it is a weak basis for a theory. It does not make these people unique. The losses are spread out over at least a 4 year period of time. Do you know somebody who has not lost something in the past 4 years?
I think Kate has all the freedom she can handle.

Baron - it's a spoiler to me because I didn't even know Claire had a boyfriend, much less one named Thomas.
JacksGirl
Baron X
10-30-04, 02:37 PM
And how were we supposed to know that? It was in the show, she had a conversation with Charlie, their first chat I believe..........
Less booze I think you are getting to the useful brain cells.:p
JacksGirlfriend
10-30-04, 02:57 PM
She never said she had a boyfriend. She said there was no one in her life. And she certainly never said the name Thomas. She implied she was totally free (and maybe even easy).

So finding out the name of a possible future guest stars character is a spoiler?
So you are saying our Claire is the type to get knocked up on a one night stand? I gave her enough credit to at least to say she was in a relationship when she got knocked up. But I see you are a Claire-hater, and have decided she is a cheap floozy. Well then good day to you madam!
I don't think I have ever actually spelled the word 'floozy' until now, wonder if I spelled it right.

Do I at least get points for stirring things up?
JacksGirl
(and yes, it's still a spoiler to me because I thought she was going to be a surrogate mother)

uh ......why did you think that?

I thought of surrogacy because I wondered why a pregnant girl would fly to the U.S. on such a long flight in such a late stage. I figured she was going to deliver the baby in the company of its new parents. Besides I didn't know she had a boyfriend and possible father for the baby.
But of course now I do so everything is ruined.

You thought she was artificially inseminated?!
At the risk of repeating myself, why?
Possible father, don't all babies have a father?
I'm sure Coach did not lie to us about that.
JacksGirlfriend
10-30-04, 03:27 PM
Yes, I thought she was artificially inseminated, possibly with the sperm from the man in the states. I figured she was a healthy, attractive, extremely personable young woman who might need a little extra cash and possibly a new life in the US. It sounds like a perfectly plausible scenario to me. Of course, now...

Okay children: Go to your rooms.
JGF is right; the name Thomas has never been used.
Baron is right. The thought of Claire carrying a child conceived by science is highly unlikely. What man in the USA wouldn't fly to Sydney for the opportunity to have sex with her?
Accents: Claire is not Australian. Or at least she doesn't have an accent. In all probability her trip to the USA is taking her home. She probably went to New Zealand to be an extra in LOTR...met a makeup artist...fell in love...and since the end of the trilogy (and moving to Sydney)neither can find work. The romance ended. She is going home to have her baby...and lick her wounds.
And now...I can't remember the last point I was going to make....but that is long enough for a post anyway!

JacksGirlfriend,
So do you think she was artificially inseminated (her eggs used) or had in vitro fertilization (only using her uterus)? Because obviously that makes a huge difference. :b Inquiring minds want to know.
JacksGirlfriend
10-30-04, 03:42 PM
I don't want to go to my room. Make him go.
And Claire sounds totally Australian to me. But I think I did see her in Lord of the Rings - one of the pretty little elf girls.
(Sorry KatesBoyfriend - we must have posted about the same time - I didn't see yours. I figured her eggs - donated sperm - hence the "father" connection in the states)
JacksGirl
It's been made obvious that Claire is Australian.
And I don't know why she couldn't be a surrogate. It's a pretty common thing. If a woman can't have a baby but they don't want to adopt, they find someone to have it for her.
What man wouldn't fly to Australia to have sex with her? Are you serious? That is the most ignorant thing I've heard yet on this board. I have to go find those brain cells I just burned reading that post.
:rolleyes

Desra: All of this is funny. OR...I meant it to be funny. LOTR extra? Going to Sydney for work with a makeup artist? Any man wanting to impregnate her? Let's keep this in perspective here.
For the record: if Claire IS a surrogate AND Australian...don't you think the adoptive parents would be stopping her from going on an international flight at 8 months into their preciously conceived pregnancy?
Lighten up: you contribute a lot to the board...we just don't see you enough. Join us in the chat room!

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT... this was MY thread in the first place..... supposed to be about irony... Well... I guess it is kind of ironic that you guyz AREN'T BEING IRONIC ON A BOARD MADE TO BE IRONIC ON!!!!!
But yeah... Claire theories w/ my views....
Surrogate: UNLIKELY... people tend to get surrogates that live in the SAME country as them. Also, I heard somewhere that you had to have PRIEVIOUSLY had a child for a person to be eligable for surrogacy.
Adoptive: More likley... but why can't Claire have the baby in Australia.... And have someone give the parents the baby in America... Its not like she's gonna see it again... Also, she'd probably have adoptive parents within the continent of Australia.
Money Problems: *my idea* I think that it is possible that she had money problems... and had family living in America (for one reason or another) and went to live w/ them.
Father Missing-in-action (not literal army-sense): I think SOMETHING happend to the FATHER THOMAS... well to the father... since its not PROVEN that THOMAS THOMAS THOMAS is the father..... but in some promo. pics... they look happy... together... :) I think he couldn't handle the responsibilaty of fatherhood... and left her... OR... he could've had an *accident* (death) and thus... raised by another... who will take on the father-fig. for the baby? *CHARLIE* *cough* *cough*
Claire adoption: I think that it IS possible that CLAIRE was the ONE adopted... NOT THE BABY. So, her bio. parents are/were in America for one reason or another.... and sooo.... she had to get there to retrieve medical records.....
OTHER THEORIES: like claire running from something/someone in Australia... possibly her father... etc. She could need special medical treatment that is ONLY in America... for the baby... so due to cercumstances... was ALLOWED to fly. etc.
Oh, and this is REALLY annoying me! CLAIRE IS AUSTRALIAN!!!! Emilie De Ravin, who plays Claire, is an AUTHENTIC AUSTRALIAN... who is good at doing American Accents... see Roswell. scifi channel... 1:00 pm Pacific coast.. but yeah, CLAIRE IS AUSTRALIAN!!! JUST LIKE EMILIE DE RAVIN!!!!!

Hurley: No idea....
Hurley lost his pop tarts. hehehe just kidding :rollin

Who's to say the baby has a father? It may be a case of immaculate conception, with Claire's baby the Second Coming or merely the One Who Will Bring Balance To The Force.
If not, perhaps Claire was just going to America to have her baby be born a U.S. citizen.
P.S. What Hurley lost was his ability to metabolize at a normal rate.
Zambini Stardust
10-31-04, 01:29 PM
Why would Claire have to return to American to get medical records for her biological parents? We have had five count em five babies, and not once did anyone ask to see our parents' medical records. Nor did they ask for the baby's grandparents' names or any of info on our parents. Even if Claire were adopted, why would her biological parents' medical records be of any consequence?
Baron X
10-31-04, 02:43 PM
why was Pink yelling? I guess she really likes Australians.
Australia has top notch medical facilities, I think it is doubtful she needed to come to the U.S. for treatment. Besides, at what point would she be planning to tell the one doctor she has access to?
I've never been asked to personally travel 2 miles to retrieve my own medical records much less thousands of miles to get some one else's.
Cristina, dry sense of humor......got it.

Baron: I just got up - I can't believe I slept so long...
Have you been to the "scientific" thread yet today? I'm still not quite ready to handle that. I can barely handle General Discussion, let alone theories. Pinnerman asked me last night about the new postings and I had to admit I didn't know!!! He'll never take me seriously again. (Not sure he ever did actually). He trusted me damn it, and I let my general down. What kind of lieutenant does that?
I don't know what's wrong me lately. I'm just not serious enough and I find I just can't think about any significant. Too much booze? Too much vacation? Too much sleep? Definitely too much of something. I think it's too much chat room. Some of you have been a bad influence on me (although I've had a fabulous time in here).
We're going to be yelled at for changing topics again. Doesn't anyone understand how some of us are? Funny, I can't remember talking about Claire...

um, okay, so irony.
my friends and i think it's ironic that on the show, jin can't speak english but in real like, ddk can't speak korean! =) er, let's just say ddk's korean on the show is not quite perfect.
