Could it be that our 'survivors' are in some kind of pergatory? And that Locke is some manfestation of God or an archangel?
I think Lokcke's chess game is the metaphor for the entire series. He told Walt that the game is about two players, one 'Light' and one 'Dark'. I think he told Walt the truth, because as a child and an innocent, he would be the only one that would believe him.
I think our characters died in the crash but went niether to heaven or hell because they all have some unfinished 'business'. They're souls are all unsettled and the island is God's way of giving them a second chance to prove where they ultimately will end up. So, the choices that they make in this 'game' are all crucial. How they treat each other, how they react to fear, whether they trust each other and work together, or backstab each other, etc.
Basically, the island is a place where forces of light and dark and battling for the souls of our 'castaways'.
That's my theory,anyway.
Any thoughts?
